How do I suppress headers on certain pages.  I'm writing a book and I don't want the page headers on Chapter title pages.  How do I stop this?

Cannot open Word docs as email attachments

I have searched other questions in this community and no one has yet posted the exact problem.

I have a new Surface Pro 3 running Windows 8.1 and use MS Office 2010. Updates are done automatically to both.

When someone sends me a Word document as an email attachment, it will not open. I get the error message "MS Word has stopped working". If I try again, Word wants to open in Safe Mode, and shows the unopened document in the side bar. I have found that if I open the doc using Wordpad, there is no problem. I then save it in RTF mode, and can then open it in Word.

The email clients I use are Outlook Web Access and Mozilla Thunderbird. Neither will open Word attachments.

I usually use Mozilla Firefox (again, up-to-date) to access Outlook. I tried using Internet Explorer, and it made no difference.

I just ran the repair mode for Office 2010 and that did not help, either.

Interestingly, I have NO problem opening up Word docs on my wife's laptop, which also has Office 2010 but is running Windows 7.

Logic would lead me to the conclusion that there is some sort of incompatibility with Win 8.1 and Word 2010 when the Word document has been sent as an email attachment.

Any ideas as to how this can be fixed? And please, do not tell me to upgrade to Office 2013!

Questions about indexing

1. After looking at the XE field codes, I conclude that there is no way to have Word put, e.g. "cats, continued" above index columns for one header that run to several pages. This makes it hard to know where you are in a large index in which one heading may go on for more than one column or page.

2. I also conclude that there is no way to have additional indentation after the first of several lines of page numbers in a given heading or subheading.

I would like, for example, the extra indent before "82." This would make the index easier to read.

Anyway to get this back?  I've websearched this, but only postings I've found have to do with hotkeys in the File menu or in the Quick Access menu.  I don't have Print in the Quick Access menu, nor do I want it, and the File menu is not a menu (it is an entire panel without any indication of hot keys of any sort).

Need help with Picture Content Control and not printing when no picture present

I can't seem to figure out how to keep a Picture Content Control box (specifically the shading of the box element) from printing when no picture is present. I am using the Picture content control within a table cell in a Word form. Could anyone suggest a way to keep the content control from printing or showing that there's an element in the cell when no picture has been added?

I have a Word document with content controls that have lists. The lists have different words in them. When either control is updated by choosing one of the words in the list for the corresponding control the other control gets updated with the same information. Somehow these are bound together but I cannot figure out how.

This was a template downloaded from Office.com.

I converted a PDF document to Word. I wished to be able to edit/comment on this document. But when I bring the document up, I am unable to "paint" a word. The cursor is just a "crossed arrow", that only allows me to move the doc around.

Problem with launching Word 2007

I Have a genuine copy of Enterprise 2007 suite, and moved up to Windows 7 after a HDD crash in March (also genuine copy)

All worked well until about a month ago

Now when I try to launch Word it takes me to the User Account Control asking me if I want to allow Word to make changes to my computer

If I agree, then word launches OK

I cannot double click on a word document to open Wod and the document any longer

I get the same User Control question, but when i agree I get an error message saying that "there was a problem sending the command to the program"

Word is the only program in the suite that is affected

I have tried "repair" and have also uninstalled and reinstalled from the original disc, but the problem persists

I'm getting a bit narked now!!

How to ask Track Changes to stop tracking the "Field Code Changed"?

Dear all,

In "Track Changes Option", I am able to ask Word 2010 to stop tracking formatting changes (So that only insertion/ deletion will be shown as mark-up).

However, I found that when there are "embedded Link Objects" being inserted in a Word documents, Track Changes will also tract the "Field Code changed".

Wondering are there any ways for Track Changes to stop tracking the "Field code changed", so that I can track only Insertion/ deletion in my document?

Creating a Table of References in Table Format

I want to create a reference section to my document that is in the form of a table rather that just a list.

Using the concept of a Table of Contents as an example, I would like it to look like this:.

Style 1

Style 2

Style 3 Style 6
Style 4 Style 7
Style 5 Style 8

I have tried to do this as a ToC but cant seem to work out how I could format it in this way.

Is it possibel to do this or, if not, does anyone know of an alternative method


Delay saving documents

Using my Surface for business I have project files and sub folders.

When I try to save a document or Email there is a long delay before it asks me where I want to save it to.

Whatever application I am using (Excel, Word etc) goes into non responsive mode for about 30secs to a minute before asking where I want to save it to.

Any help would be appreciated.

Word 2010 fields not retaining values when document is closed/opened.

Hi,

A colleague has asked for help with an issue they are having with documents containing fields.

It is a fairly basic invoice doc with fields for entering numerical values, with another field with a formula that totals these values and calculates/applies VAT.

The 'total' field only updates when the doc is printed, which I believe is normal behavior. However after re-opening the doc after saving/closing the 'total' value has reverted to zero. Printing again will update the field correctly, but again it will not retain it if the doc is closed.

This document is protected from editing, I think to prevent other people tinkering and users can only enter values into the fields.

The protection is applied with a password - could this be causing the issue? Unfortunately the person who knows the password is away at the moment so I cannot test this myself >.<

Another colleague has a similar invoice doc that is protected from editing (with no password/blank password) and this works as we would expect i.e. updated field values are retained after saving/re-opening.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Microsoft Won't Open Anything

I am a college student so using things such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel are crucial for me. However, the last couple of times I tried to open one of these things on my laptop, they would not open. Instead, I would get this pop up saying:

"Something went wrong

We couldn't start your program. Please try starting it again."

Now, I am very bad with technology so when I went to control panel to try and find what the problem was, I just got lost and even more confused.

Is there any way to get back into using Word and my other items quickly? I really don't want to have to go to multiple websites on how to fix this. A step by step solution is what I need and even then I am not sure I could follow those correctly. Also, what can I do to prevent this from happening again? I live in a college dorm so I'm limited to the WiFi on campus.

Finally, I also do not have a clue of what half of the computer terms mean. I am very sorry but the best detail I can give you is that I have a black HP laptop I bought from Best Buy last year. It's start menu is that weird square thing with the four boxes in the lower left hand corner of my computer screen. However, I do believe I have the 2013 Microsoft Word (but I'm not positive) because when I bought the computer, it came with all of that stuff already on it (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Note, etc). 

MS Word 2013 intermittently scrolls up or down and freezes requiring closing program with Task Manager and losing text

For no reason in particular all of a sudden while I'm typing a document MS Word 2013, the document will starting scrolling either all the way up to the beginning of the document or scrolling down to the end of the document. The program is then frozen and the only way to resolve the problem is to go to the Task Manager close the MS Word Program and then restart and restore the document through document recovery. Unfortunately sometimes quite a bit of text hasn't been saved requiring me to retype.

This is extremely frustrating and since I'm a transcriptionist who types all day long. I lose time and money having to deal with this annoying problem.

I am using Windows 8.1 on a relatively new (2013) Toshiba  laptop with Intel Core i5.

Determine which data source a merge main doc is looking for

I am trying to use a Word merge file that my predecessor created.  It cannot find its data source--but I know the source is here somewhere. How can I determine what file the main Word document is looking for?  Obviously there is some code in the main doc that tells it which data file to access!  I've done my homework-- scouring Help and Support as well as other forums and the internet (multiple times over the years!) has turned up no way to access that information.

I'm having a problem where other users are opening a document that I have been editing and the font and line spacing isn't the same. But when I open it everything looks correct. The document is on a shared drive. The font and line spacing have to be a particular way for the document.

So if I understand this correctly, when I create a distribution list and
specify that only 3 people in my exchange organization and 3 people from the
company next door can send to the list, what it really means is that 3 people
in my exchange organization plus everybody in the world outside my
organization can send mail to that list - is that correct ?

Hi,

I dont think an address conflict in the GAL is likely. If you try and
add an email address in AD which already exists, you are prevented
from doing so for that very reason. Several users have reported
problems in sending to the problem user's mailbox and I feel it is a
little unlikely that they would all have problem contacts. Please not
that this is an occasional problem. The issue about "No transport
provider was available for delivery to this
recipient" is far more frequent (daily).


Im afraid I konw very little about the legacyExchangeDN attribute. How
do I find this out? I do not believe any of her email addresses have
changed in teh last few months.

We use a combination of Symantic Corp Edition 10.1 and Symantec Av for MS
Exchange. We only have one mailbox information store and public store. I'm
new to 2007 so I am looking for queue monitoring tools...

I am not real suspicious of the AV system as simple one or two line text
messages can be delayed and they contain nothing the AV system should care
about. I hate to turn it off as I can't reproduce the problem on demand and
it would be hard to know if things are different for perhaps several days.

changed the custom level on client for User Authentication to automatic logo
only in intranet zone (last custom)

You're on Exchange Server 2003 - are you using the same cert for TLS on
IMAP, POP3, SMTP?
- If OWA is the only thing you're using this for, and you don't want any
interruptions - try to create a new cert request using the Certificates
snap-in (with scope set to Local Computer when you add the snap-in to a MMC
console) first.
- If that doesn't work, and you need to remove the cert/binding
temporarily - it'll be for the time it takes you to create a new cert
request and then re-bind the existing cert to the OWA site.
- I would try this on a test box/VM first.

Hosting your own mail is fine. Hosting your public website on your Exchange
server (and a domain controller, yet!) is running with scissors, and the
fact that you're a small company is irrelevant.

In fact, small companies tend not to have as much money to invest in the
kind of hardware that might help them recover from an attack (a spare
server) or a good firewall. Seriously, outsource that - and llock down your
network. Just because you haven't gotten into a bad motorcycle accident yet
doesn't mean you shouldn't be wearing a helmet.

Since port 80 is one of the more frequently scanned for/targeted ports on
the internet, it's entirely possible that your hosting has something to do
with this.

Does an IISRESET fix the problem?

Can you test by blocking inbound traffic on 80 for a little while
to see if the problem recurs?

We have a printed letterhead and continuation paper for letters and I am trying to set up an MS Word template that has appropriate margins.

The first page is easy, I need a 6cm margin top and a 5cm margin bottom and that works fine.  However, on the second page I'd like the margins to be 'normal' as we have continuation paper where normal margins will be fine.  If I set the margins the same it looks odd, like I'm wasting a lot of space.

How can I create a template with the margins set appropriately on the page but where when writing a letter and it naturally flows onto page 2, the margins become normal?  Is that possible?

1. When the Word document, I click the "View" and "Macros" and "View Macros" I get the message "Microsoft Word has stopped working" - followed by the message "Close the program".
So, I can not open the macros!

2. When the Excel document, I click the "View" and "Macros" and "View Macros" I get a blank "Macro" table.
So, I can not open the macros!

Converting linked document objects to INCLUDETEXT fields

I have hundreds of small Word 2010 documents (i.e. one sentence in length) inserted in a larger "container" document. I inserted them using the command Insert | Object | Create From File. They are considered as "Linked Document Objects" when I right-click them.

 

For various reasons, a decision was subsequently made to replace all these linked document objects with INCLUDETEXT fields. Is there a way to convert the existing objects programmatically instead of deleting them and inserting the INCLUDETEXT fields one by one?

"Keep with Next" and "Keep Lines Together" -- What's the General Rule?

I'm back.

So, I've got my document formatted using a mutli-level list linked to Header styles.

All of my Header styles have "Keep with Next" and "Keep Lines Together" checked -- I assume that is the default.

I find that I keep getting large empty spaces in my pages which I can only avoid by un-clicking "Keep with Next" or "Keep Lines Together" in the trailing paragraph.

This is simple enough, but I'm curious whether most people leave these boxes unchecked when the create a new template or document?   Or does it just depend on the document?

Is there an easier way to avoid the empty spaces that I'm not finding?

I need to move one of the edit points of the line, but this "Layout Options" box is covering it.

I've already formatted the object yet this box will not go away.

The box does not give me an option to ignore it.

Hidden Section Break??

Good morning All,

I was asked to resolve an issue with a Word 2010 document, as follows:

Originally the document had a next page section break at the end of each and every page.  I removed them all, replacing them with page breaks using Find and Replace.  I then put a section break at the end of page 2, the back of the cover page and set up different odd and even pages, so I could alternate the page number to the outside of each page, on the left of even pages and the right on odd pages in the footer.  As I was moving through the document applying styles as I went I notice that I was in section 3 and the page numbering had gotten messed up.  There should only be 2 sections.  Lo and behold, between page 46 and 47 is a change of section and the misnumbering of pages begins.  It goes from page 46 to page 19.  Show hide button on, show hide button off, I do not see the section break and Find does not detect it either. The Hidden check box in the Font dialog box is unchecked.

 Any suggestions on how to correct this will be appreciated.

I've been searching for a way to create a macro to do the following:

- Select the image(InlineShape) in the footer of a document and replace it with the image in 1 specific folder without needing to open 'inset picture' dialog.

- Keeping the previous image's formatting.

I'm not sure, but I feel like this should be fairly straightforward. It would be great if the macro would allow you to record a process like this.

I'm doing this across many files so a quick and easy process would be greatly appreciated.

I'm creating a mail merge of place cards from an Excel file.  In the Excel file I have Attending Meal in one field and Partner in another.  Not everyone is taking a partner so in that field I have No.  I'm trying to create a merge so that if the Partner field is No it will not print "No" on my place card and skip to the next record. I've tried Skip Record if Partner Equals No but it doesn't work.  I get a message "Word could not merge the main document with the data source because the data records were empty or no data records matched your query options".  I've also tried Next Record If but that doesn't work either.  Where am I going wrong?  Any advice and help would be much appreciated.

Macro stops writing after first protected table.

Hello

In our company we are encountering a macro template problem with several computers. We are using Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 with Microsoft Office 2010. There is also in use here IFS as an enterprise resource planning software. IFS server is running Windows server 2003 R2 Standard Edition SP2 and Microsoft Office 2010.

Problem itself is as follows. When opening .doc Word templates from IFS, Word stops macro writing to the first protected table. It writes fine to the first unprotected fields but after first protected table it stops writing even there would be unprotected macro fields. With most of the computers it is working fine so it is not compatibility problem or protection problem. When IFS is run from its server there is no problem. Problem occurs only in Windows 7 environment. 

What could cause the problem?

How can I do this? I dont want to show difference in font colours because I want users to print them without any noticeable difference. But they have to see on the screen which are editable and not.

I am preparing a Word 2010 template using content control. There are few locked and few unlocked controls for users to edit/change. Unfortunately the formatting should be same for both these contents. I am trying to show the users which are locked and which are not. If I show using red colour fonts users can understand they are the one to be modified.but while printing the difference is seen. I have tried using macros NoMacro button but it did not allow me more than a line.

Is there anyway to show locked content controls by different colours or something without affecting the printout?

Or is there a way to change the color of the text if users change the default text using VBA code or something (ie. all red colour texts are for users to modify, once they modify turn back to black automatically)?

Requesting HELP w-Printing Problem in Office 2007-Word - missing body of text-

My Word is suddenly having printing problem in where the body of text is missing (heading ok), & all other Office 2007 (enterprise level) products printing ok- as well as all programs including email & web-site info.   I searched everywhere without success.  apparently some file with printing instructions  in the normal template is missing or altered.      I have looked for   the template file.     normal.dotm   & can not locate it.      if this is the critical point.  how  or where can I get a fix?  

  I also tried uninstalling the full Office package & reinstalling.   No change.   Please Help!   This is important to me & my work.

Microsoft Word Bug

So this issue is a little hard to explain but whenever I shut down word a lot of little clipboards pop up all over the document screen. I don't know what they are doing or why they show up but it is weird and I have no idea why it does that. I assume it has something to do with the clipboard but it happens even when I haven't cut and pasted something into the document.

I have a Toshiba Satellite running Windows 8.1 and using Office 365 Home Premium.  From the start I have had problems opening Word and Excel documents.  On every occasion I open documents they freeze and the "not responding " message comes up.  Most times it takes at least 6 or 7 attempts before it finally opens.  This is VERY frustrating so any help would be much appreciated.

I downloaded Office 365.   In Word I will be doing a series of documents that require a specific font, font size and line spacing for each document.  Is there a way to make this my default or make a template that I can use over and over rather than changing for each separate document?  I also don't like that I can't just save, give my document a name and go to the next document.  I think I can work around this but the formatting is a pain in the neck.  The online version seems kind of limited.

Word sporadically displays the Comments (Revisions) pane

I actually got a request from someone else who was working on an existing document and this was happening to him as well.  He also showed me a seperate document where the comments pane wouldn't open when they added a comment.  So, this is very sporadic.

As a test I created a new document and it started to do this in the new document as well. 

I have Final: Show Markup

Show Markup: Everything is selected with Balloons: Show all revisions inline

View is in Print Layout Mode.

This is pretty frustrating.  There has to be an option somewhere to turn off the comments pane for good.

I've searched and searched but I obviously don't know what to call the 2 things I'm looking for as nothing comes up that is pertinent.

1.  I've been doing a merge but have run into the problem of having more "empty" records at the end of the merged document when the data source records run out.  What I mean by that is that, in this particular case, my Excel data source has 47 records.  The target Word document has 65 empty "labels" ready to receive the data.  The merged document has 47 filled "labels" and the balance are empty "labels" which I must then delete.

Is there a way to create, perhaps, just one page of "labels" (or target document that holds the merged data, in other words) so that when the records finish, the empty ones just won't appear and won't be populated?  I know how to do this in other applications but it's never been an issue with Word before, as far as I can remember.

2. The other question is, must we always pre-sort the data as we need it in the Excel source file?  There's no way to have that as is and have Word sort the records, as needed?  I know that sounds funny, but just want to make sure there's not a feature in Word mail merge that I may be unfamiliar with that perhaps sorts the data without the source document being affected?

Word 2013 Ribbon Completely Gone--Only old fashioned File and Window menus visible

I was editing a document which had an embedded Visio file as a figure. When I double clicked on the figure Visio, opened but then then immediately ended abnormally. Since then the document shows no ribbon, only the old fashioned File and Window menus. Other documents show the ribbon as expected, so the problem is localized to the settings for this particular document. The second image below is a screen capture of this document open in Word 2013. When I go to File => Word Options => Customize Ribbon, I see the first image. Everything is grayed out. How can I reset the document short of cutting and pasting 40+ pages into a new document.

2013 Word Keeps Crashing

So, I'm using an older document because it has a format my professor has been using for years. I just go in and add my own text to the document. However, when I get almost done, the document will crash. Every time I open it, it will work for maybe a few seconds, then when I try to do something, it crashes on me. Any ideas?

Mail Merge in Word 2013 only works in plain text

We recently upgraded to Office 2013 and I have found that the mail merge does not work in HTML format.  I can get it to work in plain text but it requires you to click Allow for each email recipient.  Is there a fix to this.  I am using google app sync with Outlook and do not have any issues in that regard.  It work with the previous version of Word.
