Cannot open MS Word

When I try to open MS Word 2013 in Windows 8.1 I get a 2 x 3 inch version just above the Word logo on the task bar. It will not enlarge. I attempted to do a quick repair on the MS Word program but received the following error code: 1610612703-8

What do I try next? Help!

Can't set Word 2013 as default for .doc or .docx -- double-clicking a document opens Word 2010 instead

Posted: 31 Aug 2014 12:30 PM PDT

It should be clear from the title, but I have both Office 2010 and Office 2013 installed. I recently re-installed Office 2013 (the Office 365 installed software version; I'm not using the web apps version or on-demand version). Things were working fine before and after the re-installation, then I had to answer a question for someone about Word 2010. I opened a document in Word 2010, and had to wait for the "Installing" screen to complete, even though I had previously applied the NOREREG keys to the registry in the Office 14 as well as Office 15 folders of HKCU.

Other things I've done:

  • I've right-clicked on a file, and from the contextual menu chose Open With > Choose Default Program, clicked Browse, and navigated to Office 15/WINWORD.EXE. With the "Always use..." box ticked, I clicked OK. The document opens in Word 2010.
  • In the Set Default Programs dialog, Word 2013 is already set for all the documents Word can open except for .odt documents.
  • I have Word 2013 pinned to my Start Menu. When I hover over its icon and wait for the Recent Documents flyout to appear, I click on one of them, and it opens in Word 2010.
  • Likewise on the Taskbar.

You can see from the things I've already done that I'm no rookie at these scary machines they call "computers". In fact, I've had this problem once before in a previous life; I just don't know what it was that fixed it. There's got to be a registry setting somewhere that's gone awry. Just point me to it and I'll be on my happy way. (Just FYI, the other Office apps act the same way -- .pptx files open in PPT 2010, .xlsx files open in Excel 2010, etc.)

Thanks in advance for reading this far, and for your help.

Solving for t using the equation editor in Office 365

Posted: 31 Aug 2014 12:27 PM PDT

Operating System:  Windows 8.1 64 bit.

Office Version:  Office 365 Home Premium

I am taking a grad level psychology class for Statistics in the Behavioral Sciences.  Apparently, the equation editor in Word does not have a built in equation for computing Z-scores or T-values with three fraction levels.  If you try to enter an equation manually and solve the equation, you get a pop-up stating there is an error in the equation Microsoft math cannot solve the equation.  Even trying the built-in equations and entering the values does not work.  If you click on "tell me more" you get a message stating Microsoft has nothing to recommend.

If I remove the top part of the equation, and only use the bottom half for the square root, it will solve for t.  Apparently Microsoft does not recognize the top part, the mean of one sample minus the mean of the other sample, or the number of participants for one group plus the number of participants for the other group divided by the two groups multiplied together.

How do you get the equation editor to solve the entire equation?

Thanks.

Is there a way to nest sub-list inside a listed paragraph

Posted: 31 Aug 2014 10:47 AM PDT

Hi,

having moved up from 2010 to 2013 version, I can see that Multilevel listing remains a real pain.

One thing which seems to have become difficult is to include a list inside a listed paragraph style like:

1. Because of the following reasons

1.1. Change in menus

1.2. Unfamiliar Icons

I find it even more difficult to replicate this

2. I wish for an AI-software that would recognize this pattern and either show me how to do it or just asks me if this is what I want.

3. Then I could either

       3.1. say yes or

       3.2. no or

3.3 even ask it to have another go

at recognizing the pattern which would it easier to turn and/or list into lists in the middle of a sentence.

Anyone?

Cannot "save as" when creating new docs using Office 2007 have a hp photosmart 5510 printer

Posted: 31 Aug 2014 10:36 AM PDT

Hi

I cannot "save as" when using word, excel and ppt Keep getting (word for example) word is not responding then app closes. I can edit exisiting docs and use "save" only happens when trying to save new docs.

I have ran diagnostics and there was no fault found. I was prompted to run this as it said i had a number of crashes recently using office 2007 home and students edition.

My laptop is using Windows Vista and is up to date latest updates.

I think the problem could be my printer, hp photosmart 5510 as I never had these problems when I had a different printer.

Has anyone else experienced similar problem? Pleaser note I have to use Microsoft Office Word as "Office Topic" but the issue is with ppt and excel too.

Thanks in advance

Typing slows to crawl in Word 2013 comment function/track changes

Posted: 31 Aug 2014 10:15 AM PDT

I'm using Word 2013 on a Windows 8.1 machine, but I had this same problem on a Windows 7 machine.

When I try to add a comment to a document using the track changes feature, typing in the revisions/comment pane becomes so slow as to be almost unusable.

Typing in the rest of the document is fine/normal. It's only when I'm trying to type (or edit) a comment that the typing slows way, way, way down.

I did a Google search and noticed that this was a big problem with Word 2007, and a lot of people suggested fixes. Not so with Word 2013, as far as I can tell. (That is, I can't find a lot of other people having this problem in Word 2013.)

Any advice would be welcome. Thanks!

Help please! "Accounts not associated with this office product" keeps coming up when I try to activate the account

Posted: 31 Aug 2014 09:57 AM PDT

I just bought the product online from my school and after I log in to activate the account this message, "Accounts not associated with this office product", keeps coming up. I don't how this is possible because I still have the email to verify the account and when I click it it says that the account is already verified. I called the schools tech support and no one knows how to fix it. It also asks me for a product key instead, which I never received. Please help I need to use word for a report today!

Can anyone help me with these Microsoft Theme's and color scheme's?

Posted: 31 Aug 2014 09:35 AM PDT

I'm having to do a project and I have to use the yellow color scheme on word 2013. I purchased the office 365 university thing, and I also have a mac. None of the color scheme's my instructor is having us use is on my word. Is there anyway I can download these somewhere, without having to get on here and ask someone for the rbg numbers every time I have a project? We do 2-3 projects a week and so far I haven't had any of the color scheme's she has us use on mine. Can anyone help me with this? Also, could you go ahead and give me the rbg numbers for the yellow color scheme? Thank you!

Word 2013 Win 8 Using a touchpad. Touchpad works everywhere else on my pc for proper selection but not in Word. What is going on? I'm so beginning to regret every purchasing this piece of crud program. Highlighting text is easy but try to remove it and I would have better luck convincing strangers to let me pull their teeth without anesthesia...  And let's not even get on the subject that Times New Roman is not the default font. ( i figured out how to fix that thankfully) Any response with ideas on how to resolve is appreciated. ( an no I do not have any add-ins included on my HP pc)

Thank you.

How do I use Radio Buttons to switch content inside a document

Posted: 31 Aug 2014 05:05 AM PDT

Hi,

I want to use radio buttons in MS Word 2013 to switch between contents, i.e. selecting one radio button will show some content, and selection the other will show something different. All contents will be in the same document. Is that doable? If yes, please provide me with a step by step instruction.

Thanks in advance,

Abhisek.

Tif option not appearing in paste special

I have an image saved as a tif file, but once I copy and paste it in word using paste special , I don't get the option of pasting it as "tif" but only as MS drawing object or HTML format. I also tried inserting the image, same result.

Re-installed Office 2010 in a Windows 8 Gateway Computer will not open previously created Office Documents from that same program without doing so from inside of an Open Office session.

Posted: 30 Aug 2014 09:45 PM PDT

I have a problem with Office 2010: I Re-installed it on 8/29/14 after having to restore my Gateway Windows 8 computer after Cox.net caused it to crash 2 days ago and now it won't open .DOCX word documents- that I created before I reinstalled the program; ( this is how it now identifies all of the files I had previously created with Office 2010 before the crash)–It won't open them by simply clicking on the new type Icon that distinguishes them as .DOCX type files instead of the original extensions. A message pops up saying that I need to Install Office 2010 to open this type of file.

The same document that it won't open that way-opens just fine if I open Word first, (I have already reinstalled Office 2010, using the correct product code Key that came with the Office Suite-Office Professional that came with it.) and then while inside of the Word program I go to File/Open/ and drill down to where this file is saved- I click on the icon at this point a Plus 2010nd presto-it opens right up.

Is there a way to simply tweak Office 2010 that is now re-installed on my computer to see these word documents that are now identified as .DOCX XML documents, the first time I click on them or is the path previously described (have to be inside of an Office program) the only way to open them now.

Word Cannot open file because the file format does not match the file extenson

Hi I was running grammerly through my word document, and for some reason the file went strange , and I was unable to move the mouse across the screen. In the end I decided to reboot my computer to find the above, this is a file I desperately need and need to open as soon as possible. I have scanned my pc and it has no viruses, so I cannot understand why this happened in a split second. Can you please help? I also looked online for an alternartive solution, but they seem complicated so can you please explain it to me in the simplest way possible?

Macros in Word 2003: How to transfer between computers without involving the template?

Posted: 30 Aug 2014 06:34 PM PDT

On computer 'X' my Word 2003 has a whole bunch of embedded (and useful) macros.

On computer 'Y' my Word 2003 has a quite different normal.dot that I don't want to change.

However, I would like to patch in the macros from computer 'X'.

There's plenty of online info about transferring Templates that include macros from one PC to another, but I don't want to do that

All I want to do is copy the macros from one PC to another. Both are Windows 7 with Word 2003.

Thanks :-)

Page Numbering Issue Word 2007

Posted: 30 Aug 2014 05:37 PM PDT

Hi,

I have a question regarding page numbering in Word 2007.

I have a 48-page document, in which I wish the page numbering to commence on page 3. When attempting to do this, having divided the document with a continuous section break to form two sections, Word is still counting the first two pages, i.e., on page 3, the page numbering displays 'Page 1 of 48'; I need it to count only from page 3, so that it would instead display 'Page 1 of 46', omitting the first two pages of the document from the page count.

I've phrased this query very clumsily, but any help would be most gratefully received.

Press Enter when taking notes without adding spacing

Posted: 30 Aug 2014 04:04 PM PDT

Split from this thread.

I most commonly use word to take notes, make lists or outlines. compose ideas and thoughts, etc. As default, I write a line that represents an idea or point, want to go to the next so hit 'Enter' and don't intend or want a new paragraph.

The solution would be to make changing line spacing simple with an obvious toolbar button or menu item. I'm no fan of the ribbon style toolbar which, in my opinion, makes word more difficult to use than it needs to be.

Word Documents on XP - Margins

Posted: 30 Aug 2014 03:37 PM PDT

When printing out Envelopes (size 10) using Word office 2007 with XP the graphics on the envelope print out fine. When I go to print the same document using Windows 7 they get cut off. How do I correct this? I have tried to reset the margins with no success.

It depends on the ftp server. For the vanilla "netkit" one,
there is no such thing as an "ftp account", only the normal

That depends on the mail server you're running and what you
mean by "account". Most mail servers have an alias feature so
you can set up an N:1 mapping from e-mail addresses to a
username.

You'll have to read the docs for your mail server.

Perhaps if you state what ftp and mail servers you're using and
what exactly your trying to accomplish, somebody could come up
with some more specific answers.

Aha, thank you. Indirectly it also told me what I must have done.

I downloaded switchdesk and ran it. That told me that gnome wasn't
installed, which I know it was, and told me what to do to install gnome. I
did that, and it actuslly only installed about half a dozen or so
packages, the rest having already been installed. At which point it all
ran perfectly.

When I first installed, I had gone through and added all the extra bits I
wanted, and got rid of stuff I thought I didn't need, including a load of
bluetooth packages, and these were the only packages that were reinstalled.

Even though I don't have bluetooth hardware on my machine, gnome appears
to still need the packages installed to run. I guess you really do learn
something new every day.

Many thanks.

router not routing?

Yes, and in general those systems are not meant to be accessible from the
world. One example - two of my ISPs use RFC1918 addresses for the internal
servers meant to be accessed by customers, and NOT be the world at large.
This sometimes shows up when doing a traceroute, where such an address is
assigned to intermediate routers. This usage is to save "real" IP
addresses for globally accessible systems. It may come as a shock to some,
but those routers don't offer services (other than routing packets), and
the provider really doesn't want you to be able to connect to them.

The other reason for handing out RFC1918 addresses and NATing them is for
situations where the ISP is allowing customers to be clients ONLY and
not allowing them to run servers. If the customer wants to run a server,
they can buy the more expensive 'business' service (though the official
reason for using RFC1918 addresses may be "to protect you" from being
turned into zombie servers).
