Limitations of styles and unwanted format changes

Posted: 19 Apr 2013 03:29 PM PDT

My document has hundreds of tables in dozens of different formats. A style can handle only a very limited number of features - for example suppose the first word(s) are in bold and the rest of the sentence is not bold. I don't think I can assign a style to the bold part and another style to the not-bold part. When I write the docx out and read it in, the style (apparently) is reapplied, switching the table to all bold or all not-bold. This is extremely annoying. Also line spacing irregularities are reapplied, causing unwanted format changes. This sucks. What is the best way to handle this? Why isn't there a style that says "Don't change the format?" (Restricting editing allows formats to change.)

Word italicizes first level of TOC and I don't want it to

Posted: 19 Apr 2013 12:44 PM PDT

Hello.  I have a large document that has two levels of the TOC

It is a manually created TOC where I depended upon identifying the level when I typed in the text.

When I update the TOC the first levels are all italicized (and shouldn't be).  How can I change this?  I can manually go in and highlight each line and change it to regular but the next time it is updated it changes  back.  I looked at the Heading 1 "properties if you will" and found nothing there.

Please help and thank you

Lost changes to Word doc after using a Mac computer then back to my original Windows PC

Posted: 19 Apr 2013 02:04 AM PDT

I recently edited a word document on a Mac computer (original file created on a Windows XP). I then reopened the file on my original Windows PC and there were errors on it; spaces missing between words etc.

Having edited the spaces out and made further changes I saved the document again. Having looked today none of these changes were saved.

The files have also been corrupted as they are showing Word 97-2003 compatible and Walk-in Access 1 (I have Word 2007 and I am the only one to have edited the pages). Please help!

Bulleted List

Posted: 18 Apr 2013 05:33 PM PDT

I was making a bulleted list in Word and clicked on something...and now it won't let me use the Tab and Tab+Shift key to increase/decrease the indent, anymore. Clicking the indent button every time is tedious, any suggestions on how to fix it?

Diacritics not rendering properly in Office 2013

Posted: 14 Apr 2013 07:17 PM PDT

Hello,

I recently upgraded to Office 2013 and noticed that diacritics are not being rendered properly.

Here is a link to some Hebrew text with diacritics created in Word 2013.

The bottom paragraph is displayed properly whereas the top paragraph is not.

The only fonts that seem to be displaying these diacritics properly is SBL_Hebrew and Ezra_Sil which are fonts very much designed for Hebrew Unicode diacritics. The thing is the diacritics did work properly with many other fonts in Office 2010 including the font used for the top paragraph. Why are other fonts no longer working?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

PS. After the upgrade to Office 2013 even programs such as Notepad no longer display these fonts properly.

No icon

Posted: 14 Apr 2013 01:21 PM PDT

I installed 2013 and there is no icon on my screen. It never asked me if I wanted to create 1 and the only place I can find it is my control panel under uninstall or change program. Where do I go for the icon?

why do my word documents now have paragraph signs and dots between words and double dots between sentences, etc.

Posted: 14 Apr 2013 11:00 AM PDT

I received a Word document from my daughter via email and the document had Paragraph symbols, dots between words, double dots between sentences, etc.  I tried to save it in a different format and low and behold now all of my personal documents are changed to be exactly like this version sent by my daughter.  I do not want to write a WORD document with all of this mess on it.  I want my old format back and my personal WORD documents back.  I have WORD 2010.  Could anyone please help?  Thanks.

What do "they say in support on linspire.com"?

This is a sign the hardware is not defective.

I had no luck getting my sound unmuted under Debian (kernel 2.4) using
ALSA 1.01 or 1.04. The OSS modules worked properly. After installing
kernel 2.6 on the same system, my ALSA problems went away.

What caused the problems? I don't know.

What is name of files providing Project VBA Help?

Posted: 02 Jul 2004 11:33 AM PDT

Jack,

Terrific. I was searching for *.hlp files ... didn't occur to me (as I
slap my head!) to check for *.chm files. Thanks very much.

Calculate % duration

Posted: 02 Jul 2004 11:33 AM PDT

That's what I was saying - in MS Project "% Complete" IS "% Duration" and is
based on the duration worked compared to the total duration required. %
Work Complete and % Physical Complete are two other fields, completely
different. Perhaps I'm failing to see what you're trying to do here. Are
you trying to compute the % complete that should have been reached by a
certain date in order to compare it to the % complete that actually was
reached by that date as an indicator if the project is on time? Not trying
to be stubborn, I'm just concerned that you're coming up with a fancy number
that will be useless or even misleading in terms of actually managing the
project. If I'm guessing right as to what you're actually hoping to
accomplish, that is, getting an indicator of whether the project is on time,
the SPI, Schedule Performance Index, in the Earned Value fields does exactly
that simply by displaying the field and you can have it calculated for any
arbitrary status date, not just the current date.

Summary tasks are a different critter from regular tasks in that much of
their data is derived on the fly from their component sub-tasks rather than
being stored in a field. In order to get your number fields to come out for
the summaries, in the custom fields dialog turn on the "roll up to summary"
radio button. The problem with your concept for summaries is that there
values are not straight sums. I have a summary task that has 5 subtasks
with 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 day durations starting Monday. They are all linked
start to start and are all scheduled to start the same day. The sum of the
durations is 15 days yet the duration of the summary task is 5 days. The
start of the summary is the earliest starting subtask while its finish is
its latest ending subtask. It's now Thursday. What should your calculated
"% duration" field show and what is its signifigance whether the project is
on time since it doesn't take into account whther or not work that was
scheduled has actually been accomplished?

posting is misleading. All I want is a "% duration" column, but my problem
is with the summary level tasks where "start" and "end" seem to come out as
zero. For summary tasks do you know what variables I should access to obtain
the start and end dates displayed on the Gantt chart view?

Gantt chart disappeared

What sometimes happens is that you accidently drag the border between the
task table window on the left and the Gantt timescale window on the right
all the way to the right-hand side of the screen. Move your mouse slowly to
the right of the screen and look for it to change into the 2-pointed arrow,
Click and drag to the left and see what happens.

Luis,

Thanks for posting, but I have to say I can't see the problem occurring
on my Project 2002. Exactly what is the custom field type/name you are
using?

the

looping task relationship

Posted: 01 Jul 2004 07:31 AM PDT

Mark,
Thanks for your reply. After making this query, I started remembering
how I did this years ago. Your solution is definitely worakable, but
part of the problem is that the developers are actually working on
some of the code while the testers are testing, and vice versa. So
doing a series of tasks as you suggest leaves availability in their
schedules they don't really have.
What we did before was to give the 2 tasks a SS+lag relationship, to
reflect that test starts a few days, usually, after coding. Most of
the time, they end at nearly the same time. Since you can only have
one relationship between tasks in MS Project, you can't use a link to
reflect this. Instead, I copy the finish date of coding and "paste
link" it into testing. This way, if the process takes longer than
planned, I just add duration to coding and testing extends out
accordingly.
BTW, this also avoids cluttering up the schedule with a plethora of
code/test tasks, hard to tell apart from one another unless you also
put in some text saying which code/test cycle this is. That in itself
can be a lot of data entry.
There is always many different ways of working around such problems in
Project. Am always interested in other's solutions.

Poor performance during tasks adding

Posted: 01 Jul 2004 01:30 AM PDT

Hi,
I am going to experiment your solution and it seems quite
powerful...but the database structure seems quite complicated, so I'm
reading carefully the "pjdb.htm" file. I wonder if and where I can
find routines already written in order to add tasks or anything else
to speed up my work. Any suggestion? Thanks for your precious help!

Extracting MSP_TIMEPHASED_DATA via ODBC connection to SQL Server

Posted: 30 Jun 2004 06:57 PM PDT

Hi,

I haven't ever finished extracting from the database because I felt the
calendar data needed to be taken into account, so gave up on it and used
other solutions. Either creating a copy of the data or using oledb from .mpp
files, or when using Project Server: using the MSP_VIEW tables.

Why is hourly refresh no good, especially if the schedule is only updated
once a week or less?

Hi,

Several people can update a project (with or without Server) but not
