Hello!

A strange change happened.

When I read a word file, I use he highlighting tool here and there, selecting the parts I need.

Before today,  after I selected the tool "Highlight with yellow", I could easily highlight a sentence, read further and highlight another sentence in another part of the text, without selecting the tool "highlight with yellow" again.

But today, after I highlighted a sentence, the tool turns off, and if I want to select another sentence in an another part of the text, I have to select the tool once again.  So I have to constantly select the tool again and again, but not just work with it.

Does anyone have any ideas, how did that happen and what to change to make it as it was before?

Getting unexpected results when executing a macro

I have a macro that looks like this...

    Selection.Fields.Add Range:=Selection.Range, Type:=wdFieldEmpty, Text:= _
        "FILENAME  \p ", PreserveFormatting:=True

When I save a document and then run this macro in the footer, it is supposed to show the file location.  I have a client that a couple days ago, something broke.  Now when she runs the document, it shows the following...

{FILENAME  \p \* MERGEFORMAT}

However, when she prints the document, it shows the correct path.  Any idea what would cause the problem or how to fix?

I work in an office, and I often have to prepare letters to be mailed out to various companies. Often times, these letters are in a group of four or five that always have to go to the same couple of places. I end up having to scroll through five pages, inputting the same data over and over in basicall the same way. What I was wondering- is there a way to make a cell or a text box on page one that will simply fill in the info on the other five pages? This would save me a lot of time, as I would be able to enter the info once, instead of several times over. A quick response to this question would be appreciated. I'm using Word 2010. Thank you.

Hi, 

I have a form someone gave me that is not a template to be filled in. It would be fine if you were to write on it with a pen or paper, but not for Word. 

How can I create a text field that will type on to the lines she has created? 

Example:

Workshop/Course Description:

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I want to create a fill-in the blank on the line, not type the text in the middle and still have the same length of line on either side like:

Workshop/Course Description:

___________this is not the prettiest way to look at a document ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Does this make sense?

Word 2010 crashes when inserting comments

I work in Word 2010 40 hours a week (using windows 7). I and others periodically get a Word crash when inserting comments using the Review tab. Usually, there is an error message after you start typing your comment, that says something like "Word has encountered a problem. You may lose your data if you continue. Do you want to continue?" When this happens, I usually say yes, hit save and then get out of the document. I then do an Open and Repair to hopefully get the glitch out. I've researched this online and can't find any explanation as to what is causing this and how to avoid it. I have read the old article from Word MVPs about corruptions but it doesn't address this one, which seems unique to Word 2010.

Change default tab in Word 2010

Hi

how can I press the Tab key and have the cursor move over only .25 inches for only the first line of any paragraph I do this in?  It currently moves over .5 inches.

And I want  all the other lines in the same paragraph to move back to the margin naturally when I type.  Also when I press Enter for a new paragraph, I want the cursor to go back all the way to the left margin. (no indentation)

I would like this to be for any new document I create.

Word 2000 suddenly saving documents as PDF

I am having trouble saving documents in Word 2000. It is suddenly automatically saving all documents as a PDF. Then when I go to open the PDF, I get an open error message & the file can't be displayed. I am saving the documents as Word files. Don't know why this is suddenly happening. I have not changed any settings. Can anyone please help me?

is there a way in Word to save a file in a single page web format (.htm) without saving the additional .xml files associated with the .htm?

I'm using Autodesk Architecture and their 'bulletinBoard.htm' is just a window showing typical project info but it is in .htm format.  I have saved the htm file but either creates a support folder with xml and other file extensions in it or in the base folder where the htm file is located.

Word AutoComplete disable

I need to disable AutoComplete enterprise wide (Word 2010>File>Options>Advanced>Editing Options>Show AutoComplete Suggestions) but there doesn't appear to be a GPO setting to do this and I can't find a registry key. Does anyone know if/where this setting is stored in the registry? Or some other way to disable it?

Word 2013 Font Letter Spaces

Hello

I have a problem with Word 2013.

I recently installed a Font called RotisSansSerif, using a given .PFM File. 

A .PFB File was also sent and is located in the same folder as the .PFM File. 

Sadly I can't install the .PFB since I get an error trying to do that (which is normal from what I've read).

My problem is best seen in the attached picture:


The first text is the one I see in Word, the second one is the one I get when I print the document or open it as a .PDF File.

How can I fix it so it looks exactly like on the output file?

(I tried reinstalling the Fonts or restarting Word)

Referencing page numbers in other documents, without using master documents

Dear MS Community

I hope you can help me. 

This is my situation:

I am working with multiple documents.

One of these documents acts as the overview of the others and contains specific page numbers in other documents. Let's call it Overview.doc

eg 

Outcome Unit and page
Define mentoring Unit 1, pg. 124 - 156

The page numbers is found in another document, let's say Facilitator guide. This document (Facilitator guide) will change over time and I do not want to maintain Overview.doc when these page numbers change - I want it to do this by itself.

Can anybody please help me to understand how this can be done?

I've been mucking about with fields and bookmarks, but do not know how to write the instructions correctly to get the page views.

Change language without changing keyboard layout

Hello,

MS Word 2010, Windows 7 ultimate/64

I would like to keep English as my standard language and keyboard layout.  But there are times when I create a document or open a document in French. (Word used to "recognize" the language, as I recall, but I don't mind changing it manually.)

It would be nice to work on the document in French without every word being underlined as misspelled.  But I want to keep the American English keyboard (I have my own program for putting in accents, etc).

Is it possible to change the language for a particular document from English to French yet not change the standard keyboard?

Caption Numbering

Documentation specification dictates that figures and tables be numbered as in the following examples:

  • Figure F-3.4 where '3' indicates the third chapter and '4' indicates the fourth figure in chapter 3.
  • Table T-3.4 where '3' indicates the third chapter and '4' indicates the fourth table in chapter 3.

Please advise the correct procedure for achieving this format.

I have created new labels for figures and tables as follows: "Figure F-" and "Table T-"

The result I get with this method yields the following: Figure F-[space]3.4, and Table T-[space]3.4.

If this is the correct procedure, how can I eliminate the space, without having to manually delete it at every incidence?

Word for Mac 2011 documents crash Word for Windows 2013 when containing images

Hi folks,

We are a team of people, some working on Mac, some working on PC's.

When we shared word document created or modified by Word for Mac AND in which images are incorporated, the opening of the word document will crash Word for Windows 2013 systematically.

Documents not containing images and modified/created by Word for Mac DO NOT crash Word for Windows.

Any help is more than welcome,

Hi, here's what I'm trying to do.  I'm just setting up a simple 3 column list.  Column 1 is in English, column 2 is in Greek, and column 3 is the Phonetic pronunciation.  So I start by typing all the English phrases and then I go to column 2 and type the corresponding Greek phrases and then onto column 3 to show how to phonetically pronounce the words.  Naturally I get through the first column with flying colors, but when I go to the next column to type up the corresponding Greek phrases then I notice that has I tap the enter key and go to the next line I get further and further off and by the time I get to the 5th or 6th line then it becomes truly noticeable.  I realize that they are 2 different character sets but shouldn't they line up?  Anyway I hope that you can help me.  Thanks.

Opening Word or Excel files

Hi folks.

Several weeks ago I had a problem with a thing called AVG browser. Norton eventually cleared the AVG software, but in the process, I lost important storage folders from my email. These folders remain lost.

However, a new problem has emerged which has me stumped. When I open Excel, or Word, and try to open some files, I get this message (for Excel),

"If you are trying to open the file from your list of most recently used files, make sure that the file has not been renamed, moved or deleted." I haven't done any of those things. The affected files show as being in 

                       %CSIDL_PERSONAL%.xlsx,

and for Word, the affected files show as being in the same whatever. If I click on a file to open (e.g., Doc1), I get the message 

                       "The directory name is not valid. C:\Users\Paul|Desktop\...\Doc1.docx"

Not all Excel and Word files were affected, but quite a number were.

What is this %CSIDL_PERSONAL% thing? Could my files be in there? If so, can they be recovered?

Can anybody help?

On my desktop I  get the message Microsoft cannot verify the license for this product. You should repair the Office program by using control panel when I try to use Word. I went to the control panel but do not know what to do from there.

I'm unable to print Word Documents at 100%. Word Print Preview automatically resets to 66% when I try to change it. Earlier today I had no problem printing them at 100% but now I can't and can't understand why not. Please help!!! Sorry, I have Word 2002 but that wasn't an option...

Problem printing envelope

I attempted to print an envelope immediately after finishing the letter which was to be enclosed.  Instead of the addressee appearing in Deliver to, my name and complimentary closing appear there.  I did nothing differently from the way I usually print an envelope after completing the letter; and, as far as I know, this is the first time I've had this problem; had Word 2010 for at least 2 years.  (I miss my old Windows and Word programs SO MUCH!  They were so easy to use.)

Large "Top Padding" in Table unchangeable?

I make a basic table in MS Word 2013 and add a single line of text to each row. All looks good. The issue for me is that there appears to be the height of a new line immediately above my text in every row. I can't make the row have any less height to minimize this large gap above. Setting the vertical alignment to "middle" has no effect either. How can I reduce this waste of space in each table row?

Attached is a screenshot illustrating what I am talking about. As far as I know, I have not changed any defaults or settings.

Built-In Blank (Three Columns) Footer Alignment Question

I couldn't seem to find an answer on this using Bing so I thought I'd ask here.

I am curious how to see/edit the alignment of the built-in Blank (Three Columns) footer. There are no alignment tabs set and they seem to be ignored when they are inserted. It seems the only way to get the tabs to observe the tab alignments is delete the tab characters and insert new ones. Does anyone know if this behavior is documented anywhere? I would like to know how Word is accomplishing this and if this approach is superior over using alignment tabs. I also would like to know how to fix the alignment if someone inadvertently deleted a tab.

Spellcheck Ignore in docx versus doc

tl;dr: Big docx documents have different spellcheck behavior from small docx or any-sized doc documents, what is up with that?

Long version:

As I understand it, Word doesn't retain Ignore and Ignore All directions once you close a document, that is, when you tell it to Ignore a misspelling, the red line will pop back up (on the words you previously Ignored, not just when you type the word again later) after you close and reopen the document.  This seems to be intentional, HOWEVER, it only seems to work under certain conditions:

docx format

>100kb file size

I would like some way of retaining Ignored spellings so I'm wondering what it is about the .doc format or the small file size that makes it possible to do that.  I've tested this using Word 2010 and 2013 and in both cases, if I save as a .doc or the file size of the .docx is less than ~100kb, the Ignored spellings are saved with the document and no red line appears the next time I open it (I made sure to fully close Word between each test, plus I run spellcheck with F7 so it isn't just rechecking and hasn't brought up the red line yet).  But a docx larger than 100kb never saves the spellings, despite the fact that when I Ignore a misspelling and then close the document, Word asks me if I want to save changes.  What is it saving if not the Ignore?

I know about creating a non-spellchecked style and checking the 'hide spelling errors' option, neither of which appeals to me (too tedious if there are a lot of things to ignore and I'd like spellcheck to flag words that are legitimately misspelled).  So can anyone tell me what 'trigger' gets flipped when my docx gets too big and how to unflip it?  Is the only alternative to save everything as a .doc?  And MS, why aren't Ignore directives saved with a document?!

Hi Gordon,

If you compare the same product suite in an OEM (pre-installed) Office product with the same retail product the primary differences
are

(a) Pre-installed editions are licensed to a single machine and aren't transferrable, while Retail ones are allowed on two
machines and can be transferred to another machine.

(b) For questions on the pre-installed product, the PC supplier rather than MS would be the first stop.

It shouldn't, but, after uninstalling, you may want to restart the PC then run the Office 2007 diagnostics just to double check :)

OK, so back to my question..I have my install scripts but If I put it as a
startup script will it not install (and then reinstall) every time the
machines startup? How do I install from a script just once if it isn't
already installed?

I'm answering this from memory so I may be totally wrong, but I seem
to remember that somewhere during the Office install you have the
option to save the install point to the hard drive. This creates a
folder called MSOCache. Future repair installs or installs of
additional features use this point and do not require the CD. Search
Google for more information.

When I go to save a file, I get an error message that says "There has been a
network or file permission error. The network conection may be lost."

The network connection works fine and I have sufficient permissions
(Admnistrator): I can save files from other programs (note pad, quicken,
etc.) with no difficiulty and Office 2003 had no problem saving files to the
server either. The only problem occurs with Office 2007. I have tested this
with Word, Excel and Powerpoint and the same issue arises.

I got this by opening up Word2003, selecting "tools", then "Language", then
"Set Language" which brought up a dialogue box and the UK one is
highlighted.

I also manually clicked on the DEFAULT button to ensure this was set as the
default.

In those tests, I couldn't boot partitions which were formatted with the
reiserfs and where the grub bootloader was installed at the partition

That whole reply (including the stuff I've snipped) was excellent. I
used RedHat for several years (from 3.0.3 to 7.3) until they got too
commercial (spamming me to subscribe to their paid distro), at which
point I switched to Debian. Debian is slow, compared with other distros
(as in slow to update, slow to support new technologies, not slow to
run) but very reliable, very well supported and with a very pure
approach to 'free' (the whole gratis/libre distinction). It all depends
on what you want. I suspect you will find a small proportion of twits
in whichever forum you post, but equally I expect most distros have a
helpful base of respondents.

One distro you might also consider (sorry to make the choice more
complicated) is SuSE, which fulfils both Zenon's criteria: masses of
software and good docs. I've not used it myself, but it is supposed to
be more user-friendly than Debian (which can assume a little too much
technical know-how), while being less commercial than RedHat (though
I'm not really sure if that's true any more).

that happens is "GRUB" appears on the screen with a flashing cursor.

Testing Patches for Linux Kernel 2.6.15

installation doesn't provide for this.

There are additional packages you can choose to install or not, but
there's no option to omit part of the base system.

I have a similar problem: I'm trying to find a Linux distribution that
will work on a laptop with 96 Mb of RAM and 2 Gb of disk space and that
comes with support for a wireless network. I considered Knoppix, Puppy,
Damn Small Linux and Vector; Vector seems to be the best choice. Puppy was
promising, but I had problems with the installation program.

We have already seen why we must liquidate all forms of government, now
we shall turn our attention to how we can do so without violating
Libertarian philosophy. To this we can look to the Internet for
examples.

We ask two questions

1. How can we translate the freedom afforded by the Internet to ordinary
life?

2. How can we keep the government from banning encryption, digital cash,
and other systems that will improve our freedom?

A few months ago, I had a truly and quite literally "revolutionary"
idea, and I jokingly called it "Assassination Politics": I speculated on
the question of whether an organization could be set up to _legally_
announce either that it would be awarding a cash prize to somebody who
correctedly "predicted" the death of one of a list of violators of
rights, usually either government employees, officeholders, or
appointees. It could ask for anonymous contributions from the public,
and individuals would be able send those contributions using digital
cash.

I also speculated that using modern methods of public-key encryption and
anonymous "digital cash," it would be possible to make such awards in
such a way so that nobody knows who is getting awarded the money, only
that the award is being given. Even the organization itself would have
no information that could help the authorities find the person
responsible for the prediction, let alone the one who caused the death.

It was not my intention to provide such a "tough nut to crack" by
arguing the general case, claiming that a person who hires a hitman is
not guilty of murder under libertarian principles. Obviously, the
problem with the general case is that the victim may be totally innocent
under libertarian principles, which would make the killing a crime,
leading to the question of whether the person offering the money was
himself guilty.

On the contrary; my speculation assumed that the "victim" is a
government employee, presumably one who is not merely taking a paycheck
of stolen tax dollars, but also is guilty of extra violations of rights
beyond this. (Government agents responsible for the Ruby Ridge incident
and Waco come to mind.) In receiving such money and in his various
acts, he violates the "Non-agression Principle" (NAP) and thus,
presumably, any acts against him are not the initiation of force under
libertarian principles.

The organization set up to manage such a system could, presumably, make
up a list of people who had seriously violated the NAP, but who would
not see justice in our courts due to the fact that their actions were
done at the behest of the government. Associated with each name would
be a dollar figure, the total amount of money the organization has
received as a contribution, which is the amount they would give for
correctly "predicting" the person's death, presumably naming the exact
date. "Guessers" would formulate their "guess" into a file, encrypt it
with the organization's public key, then transmit it to the organiztion,
possibly using methods as untraceable as putting a floppy disk in an
envelope and tossing it into a mailbox, but more likely either a cascade
of encrypted anonymous remailers, or possibly public-access Internet
locations, such as terminals at a local library, etc.

In order to prevent such a system from becoming simply a random unpaid
lottery, in which people can randomly guess a name and date (hoping that
lightning would strike, as it occasionally does), it would be necessary
to deter such random guessing by requiring the "guessers" to include
with their "guess" encrypted and untraceable "digital cash," in an
amount sufficiently high to make random guessing impractical.

For example, if the target was, say, 50 years old and had a life
expectancy of of 30 years, or about 10,000 days, the amount of money
required to register a guess must be at least 1/10,000th of the amount
of the award. In practice, the amount required should be far higher,
perhaps as much as 1/1000 of the amount, since you can assume that
anybody making a guess would feel sufficiently confident of that guess
to risk 1/1000th of his potential reward.

The digital cash would be placed inside the outer "encryption envelope,"
and could be decrypted using the organization's public key. The
prediction itself (including name and date) would be itself in another
encryption envelope inside the first one, but it would be encrypted
using a key that is only known to the predictor himself. In this way,
the organization could decrypt the outer envelope and find the digital
cash, but they would have no idea what is being predicted in the
innermost envelope, either the name or the date.

If, later, the "prediction" came true, the predictor would presumably
send yet another encrypted "envelope" to the organization, containing
the decryption key for the previous "prediction" envelope, plus a public
key (despite its name, to be used only once!) to be used for encryption
of digital cash used as payment for the award. The organization would
apply the decryption key to the prediction envelope, discover that it
works, then notice that the prediction included was fulfilled on the
date stated. The predictor would be, therefore, entitled to the award.
Nevertheless, even then nobody would actually know WHO he is!

It doesn't even know if the predictor had anything to do with the
outcome of the prediction. If it received these files in the mail, in
physical envelopes which had no return address, it would have burned the
envelopes before it studied their contents. The result is that even the
active cooperation of the organization could not possibly help anyone,
including the police, to locate the predictor.)

Also included within this "prediction-fulfilled" encryption envelope
would be unsigned (not-yet-valid) "digital cash," which would then be
blindly signed by the organization's bank and subsequently encrypted
using the public key included. (The public key could also be publicized,
to allow members of the public to securely send their comments and,
possibly, further grateful remuneration to the predictor, securely.)
The resulting encrypted file could be published openly on the Internet,
and it could then be decrypted by only one entity: The person who had
made that original, accurate prediction. The result is that the
recipient would be absolutely untraceable.

The digital cash is then processed by the recipient by "unblinding" it,
a principle which is explained in far greater detail by an article in
the August 1992 issue of Scientific American. The resulting digital
cash is absolutely untraceable to its source.

This overall system achieves a number of goals. First, it totally hides
the identity of the predictor to the organzation, which makes it
unnecessary for any potential predictor to "trust" them to not reveal
his name or location. Secondly, it allows the predictor to make his
prediction without revealing the actual contents of that prediction
until later, when he chooses to, assuring him that his "target" cannot
possibly get early warning of his intent. (and "failed" predictions
need never be revealed). In fact, he needs never reveal his prediction
unless he wants the award. Third, it allows the predictor to anonymously
grant his award to anyone else he chooses, since he may give this
digital cash to anyone without fear that it will be traced.

For the organization, this system also provides a number of advantages.
By hiding the identity of the predictor from even it, the organization
cannot be forced to reveal it, in either civil or criminal court. This
should also shield the organization from liability, since it will not
know the contents of any "prediction" until after it came true. (Even
so, the organization would be deliberately kept "poor" so that it would
be judgment-proof.) Since presumably most of the laws the organization
might be accused of violating would require that the violator have
specific or prior knowledge, keeping itself ignorant of as many facts as
possible, for as long as possible, would presumably make it very
difficult to prosecute.

'All of them,' answered Jim."

Political Implications
Imagine for a moment that as ordinary citizens were watching the
evening news, they see an act by a government employee or officeholder
that they feel violates their rights, abuses the public's trust, or
misuses the powers that they feel should be limited. A person whose
actions are so abusive or improper that the citizenry shouldn't have to
tolerate it.

What if they could go to their computers, type in the miscreant's name,
and select a dollar amount: The amount they, themselves, would be
willing to pay to anyone who "predicts" that officeholder's death. That
donation would be sent, encrypted and anonymously, to a central
registry organization, and be totalled, with the total amount available
within seconds to any interested individual. If only 0.1% of the
population, or one person in a thousand, was willing to pay $1 to see
some government slimeball dead, that would be, in effect, a $250,000
bounty on his head.

Further, imagine that anyone considering collecting that bounty could do
so with the mathematical certainty that he can't possibly be identified,
and could collect the reward without meeting, or even talking to,
anybody who could later identify him. Perfect anonymity, perfect
secrecy, and perfect security. And that, combined with the ease and
security with which these contributions could be collected, would make
being an abusive government employee an extremely risky proposition.
Chances are good that nobody above the level of county commissioner
would even risk staying in office.

Just how would this change politics in America? It would take far less
time to answer, "What would remain the same?" No longer would we be
electing people who will turn around and tax us to death, regulate us
to death, or for that matter sent hired thugs to kill us when we oppose
their wishes.

No military?

One of the attractive potential implications of such a system would be
that we might not even need a military to protect the country. Any
threatening or abusive foreign leader would be subject to the same
contribution/assassination/reward system, and it would operate just as
effectively over borders as it does domestically.

This country has learned, in numerous examples subsequent to many wars,
that once the political disputes between leaders has ceased, we
(ordinary citizens) are able to get along pretty well with the citizens
of other countries. Classic examples are post-WWII Germany, Japan, and
Italy, and post-Soviet Russia, the Eastern bloc, Albania, and many
others.

Contrary examples are those in which the political dispute remains, such
as North Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Cuba, Red China, and a few others. In
all of these examples, the opposing leadership was NOT defeated, either
in war or in an internal power struggle. Clearly, it is not the PEOPLE
who maintain the dispute, but the leadership.

Consider how history might have changed if we'd been able to "bump off"
Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini, Tojo, Kim Il Sung, Ho Chi Minh,
Ayatollah Khomeini, Saddam Hussein, Moammar Khadafi, and various others,
along with all of their replacements if necessary, all for a measly few
million dollars, rather than the billions of dollars and millions of
lives that subsequent wars cost.

But that raises an interesting question, with an even more interesting
answer. "If all this is so easy, why hasn't this been done before?" I
mean, wars are destructive, costly, and dangerous, so why hasn't some
smart politician figured out that instead of fighting the entire
country, we could just 'zero' the few bad guys on the top?

The answer is quite revealing, and strikingly "logical": If we can kill
THEIR leaders, they can kill OUR leaders too. That would avoid the
war, but the leadership on both sides would be dead, and guess who is
making the decisions about what to do? That's right, the LEADERS!

And the leaders (both theirs and ours!) would rather see 30,000,000
ordinary people die in WWII than lose their own lives, if they can get
away with it. Same in Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, and numerous other
disputes around the globe. You can see that as long as we continue to
allow leaders, both "ours" and "theirs," to decide who should die, they
will ALWAYS choose the ordinary people of each country.

One reason the leaders have been able to avoid this solution is simple:
While it's comparatively easy to "get away with murder," it's a lot
harder to reward the person who does it, and that person is definitely
taking a serious risk. (Most murders are solved based on some prior
relationship between the murder and victim, or observations of witnesses
who know either the murderer or the victim.)

Historically, it has been essentially impossible to adequately motivate
a assassin, ensuring his safety and anonymity as well, if only because
it has been impossible to PAY him in a form that nobody can trace, and
to ensure the silence of all potential witnesses. Even if a person was
willing to die in the act, he would want to know that the people he
chooses would get the reward, but if they themselves were identified
they'd be targets of revenge.

All that's changed with the advent of public-key encryption and digital
cash. Now, it should be possible to announce a standing offer to all
comers that a large sum of digital cash will be sent to him in an
untraceable fashion should he meet certain "conditions," conditions
which don't even have to include proving (or, for that matter, even
claiming) that he was somehow responsible for a death.


I believe that such a system has tremendous implications for the future
of freedom. Libertarians in particular (and I'm a libertarian) should
pay particular attention to the fact that this system "encourages" if
not an anarchist outcome, at least a minarchist (minimal government)
system, because no large governmental structure could even survive in
its current form.

In fact, I would argue that this system would solve a potential
problem, occasionally postulated, with the adoption of libertarianism in
one country, surrounded by non-libertarian states. It could have
reasonably been suspected that in a gradual shift to a libertarian
political and economic system, remnants of a non-libertarian system such
as a military would have to survive, to protect society against the
threats represented by foreign states. While certainly plausible, it
would have been hard for an average naive person to imagine how the
country would maintain a $250 billion military budget, based on
voluntary contributions.

The easy answer, of course, is that military budgets of that size would
simply not happen in a libertarian society. More problematic is the
question of how a country would defend itself, if it had to raise it
defenses by voluntary contribution. An equally simplistic answer is
that this country could probably be defended just fine on a budget 1/2
to 1/3 of the current budget. True, but that misses the point.

The real answer is even simpler. Large armies are only necessary to
fight the other large armies organized by the leadership of other,
non-libertarian states, presumably against the will of their citizenry.
Once the problem posed by _their_ leadership is solved (as well as ours;
either by their own citizenry by similar anonymous contributions, or by
ours), there will be no large armies to oppose.
