Microsoft Word - Pasting (Crtl+V) Inserts a Blank Space

Microsoft Word - Pasting (Crtl+V) Inserts a Blank Space

Pasting (Crtl+V) Inserts a Blank Space

Posted: 13 Jul 2014 02:45 PM PDT

When I want to replace a blank space with the contents of the clipboard Word is NOT replacing the space, even though it is selected.  For example:

(A) Text

I want to replace the space between the ) and the letter T with the contents of the clipboard, using  Crtl+V.  I select the blank space, do the insert and the blank space is back.

Also, when I double click on a word followed by punctuation and drag that word to another place in the document, Word inserts a space after the text that is selected.  There is no space withing the selection.

I KNOW it's buried in the Options setup in Word 2010 but I can't seem to find it and now it's all a blur!

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance,

Bob Weaver

Content Control Alignment in Repeating Section Content Controls (bug or by design)

Posted: 13 Jul 2014 01:31 PM PDT

In a Word 2013 document insert a 3 x 3 table

In row 1 add "XX" to each cell

In row 2 add plain text CCs to each cell

Select the table and set cell text alignment to right

All is well

Select row 1 and insert a repeating section CC.  Add a new section and notice the text in the new section is also right aligned.  This is good.

Select row 2 and insert a repeating section CC.  Add a new section and notice that for some incomprehensible reason the new section is left aligned.

Is this a bug or by design?  If design, for what possible reason?

Content controll autopopulate

Posted: 13 Jul 2014 12:46 PM PDT

I have a four page form designed in word 2013.  Each page has an address field that is filled out on the first page.  I'd like to type in the address on the first page and have it autopopulate the other three pages with the same address.  The only way that seems to halfway work is adding legacy form fields (I can't get the content control fields to do what I want).  I then print preview to get all the fields to update.  The problem is when I save to or export to pdf the field data will not show or print.  What is the best way to do this so that the new data will print on a saved pdf file?

Word 2013 is no good for serious layout

Posted: 13 Jul 2014 11:14 AM PDT

Hi guys,

I wonder if anyone else has been having any of the same issues. I have just lost 3 hours' work due to consistent crashes in Word with the last crash destroying the file on which I was working (thanks Word!). I am trying to create an infographic resume using SmartArt, Shapes, and Textboxes but Word cannot seem to handle the load and crashes on save.

I am now utterly fed up with Word and am going to use a proper tool (InDesign) to get the job done right. Will then export to PDF and find a way to convert that to DOCX. It is a real pity that Word is not up to the task, InDesign is total overkill for such a small project. Maybe in the next version of Word?

Cheers...

Macro to convert date format in a document?

Posted: 13 Jul 2014 10:58 AM PDT

I want a macro to convert date format so that "11/5/2011", for example, or "11/05/2011" would become  "11 May 2011".

Instead the macro I'm trying out gives me the following:

11/5/2011 should be 11 May 2011 but instead I get 5 November 2011
12/5/2011 should be 12 May 2011 but instead I get 5 December 2011
13/5/2011 should be 13 May 2011 but instead I get 13 May 2011
14/5/2011 should be 14 May 2011 but instead I get 14 May 2011

The macro code is given below, and I would be most grateful if someone can tell me how to correct it.

Sub ConvertDateFormat()

    Dim FoundOne As Boolean

    Selection.HomeKey Unit:=wdStory, Extend:=wdMove

    FoundOne = True ' loop at least once

    Do While FoundOne ' loop until no date is found

        With Selection.Find

            .ClearFormatting

            .Replacement.ClearFormatting

            .Text = "([0-9]{1,2})[/]([0-9]{1,2})[/]([0-9]{4})"

            .Format = True

            .Forward = True

            .MatchWildcards = True

        End With

        Selection.Find.Execute Replace:=wdReplaceNone

        ' check that the find is a date

        If IsDate(Selection.Text) Then

            Selection.Text = Format(Selection.Text, "d MMMM yyyy")

            Selection.Collapse wdCollapseEnd

        Else ' not a date - end loop

            FoundOne = False

        End If

    Loop

End Sub

I would also like to check how I should alter the code to give me a version of the macro that does not loop but simply finds the next date, so that I would then click the macro's button each time to execute and go to next. This would be useful in cases where I prefer to check each instance rather than just run the macro for the full document.

My regional settings in Windows (8.1) are as follows:

Language: English (South Africa)

Short date: yyy-MM-dd

Long date: dd MMMM yyyy

Find multiple letters in Word

Posted: 13 Jul 2014 08:05 AM PDT

I'd like to be able to find (i.e. have Word highlight) the letters k, kh, g, gh.

For example in the following words:

kat khan get sorghum

I'd like only those specified letters to be highlighted:

kat khan get sorghum

Is there any way to do this?  It looks like it might be possible with complicated wildcard entries but maybe only for individual words?

Many thanks.

Office 2007 and 8.1

Posted: 13 Jul 2014 06:39 AM PDT

Office 2007 has been running great up until recently.  Word logo displays with cursor turning, never bring up program.  Seems to always happen when updates are applied.  I usually do a recovery to earlier windows update and then it will work.  now outlook is starting.  I know your trying to make money and have everyone update, But I have been buying package upgrade or new versions, staring way back in the early windows days.  Enough is enough, now that I am retired,

$ is tight.  I downloaded Open systems package that is free, but I prefer office.

I present looking at the new surface that was just release for my granddaughter, for college, Is she going to have these same problems????

We can not continue to ignore the people out here.  if you say its compatible, then make it.  Its getting old.

I need help.

office 2013 is not opening

Posted: 13 Jul 2014 02:29 AM PDT

I recently bought a new acer aspire V7 and had installed office home and student 2013 at the retailer. All went smooth and fine while using it for the first time. But when I went to open  a new document or open a saved file it doesnt open. This is seen on word, excel, powerpoint and one note. And this is only after three days of installation. The system runs on windows 8.1. If anyone can please provide a solution it would be of great help. Another point to be noted is that it does not provide any information as to why and how it is not working. I would be really happy if anyone could respond as soon as possible to this question.

Cross reference to section with standard page number appears in roman numerals

Posted: 12 Jul 2014 11:36 PM PDT

Greetings,

I have no idea why this is happening, but when cross referencing to a specific section in my document which has standard, arabic numerals in the footer e.g. 112, the page number in the cross reference comes out as roman numerals "(see p.cxii)".

This issue is only with one section. Cross references to other sections in the document come out fine (standard arabic numerals).

(Platform: Word 2010 on Windows 7 Pro)

Much obliged to any advice that can resolve this issue!

Cross-reference styles

Posted: 12 Jul 2014 05:40 PM PDT

When I insert a cross-reference the reference is inserted with its style. I know how to modify the C-R field to change the case (e.g., in an endnote), but often the point size of the page no., bookmark, heading, etc. is different from the text where the C-R is being inserted.  How do I control this, so the C-Rs can be updated without changing the styles.

Advice for setting up partitions/Semi standard usage

# du -hs /fc5/var
138M /fc5/var <=== Fedora Core

# du -hs /suse/var
126M /suse/var

# du -hs /kubuntu/var
310M /kubuntu/var

# du -hs /ubuntu/var
221M /ubuntu/var

My suggestions: common /tmp and swap partitions with all other
directories installed in the / partition for each distribution.

I would create a common /local partition to contain common stuff
between distributions.
Example: /local/opt for common third party
application installations, like firefox, java, from the third party
vendor.
/local/downloads partition to hold the download archives.

I have a /site partition for my own creations shared accross distros

$ ls /site
bin config doc ppp sounds

For user stuff, I have a /accounts partition.
Common stuff is linked from /home/bittwister to /accounts/bittwister.
Chopped down ls -al $HOME/ examples:

.bash_logout -> /accounts/bittwister/.bash_logout
.bash_profile -> /accounts/bittwister/.bash_profile
.bashrc -> /accounts/bittwister/.bashrc
bin -> /accounts/bittwister/bin/
comp -> /accounts/bittwister/comp/
.cron -> /accounts/bittwister/.cron
firefox.tar -> /accounts/bittwister/firefox.tar
.jnewsrc -> /accounts/bittwister/.jnewsrc
.mozilla -> /accounts/bittwister/.mozilla

Now I can backup /local/downloads, /site and /accounts on one cd.

Different distributions can have different revisions of the desktop
manager which could step on each other so everything else is in / like
/home.

Your last problem is user/group ids. They can change between
releases and each distro may have different starting numbers for
users.

$ grep bittwister /etc/passwd
bittwister:x:500:500:Bit Twister:/home/bittwister:/bin/bash

$ grep bittwister /suse/etc/passwd
bittwister:x:1000:100:Bit Twister:/home/bittwister:/bin/bash

From now on, I will create the /junk/ account as the first user
account for testing.

All my other user accounts will be 1500+ so I can just
cut/paste to bottom of /etc/passwd, /etc/group and /etc/ shadow on new
installs.

A suggestion for app/system testing. I keep spare ~6 gig partitions
for testing new system/app releases/updates and keep one as
production hot backup.

I'll do a clean install in a test partition, install my custom changes
and if testing says ok, then it becomes the new production partition
and the old partition becomes a test partition.

For doing someting which might dink up the system, copy / into a spare
test partition, change fstab in test, add to my lilo boot loader, boot
test partition and play around.

You can boot a computer today without a network connection and get the correct

I do not have a program called setclock, never heard of it. There is ntpdate

included what works for me.

Also instead of an ip number set often ntp.yourisp.com works.

I had wondered about the size of a project file and if it would become a
problem at a certain point. It's also the reason I do not plan on using the
document attachment feature but rather just use links, or someday if I'm real
lucky and get it approved, let sharepoint store the documents and do all the
stuff to let sharepoint work with project.

But I do have another question on the file size matter. It would seem at
this time that project uses its own unique data file structure based on what
has been said. I was wondering if you knew of or had seen any information
regarding if MS has plans to convert the project data file structure over to
embedded SQL?

I would have thought that this would have been something that would have
already been done by now, but perhaps they just never have gotten to it or
they just don't plan on doing it.

Thanks,

EVM without Costs?

Posted: 05 Aug 2005 12:57 PM PDT

I'd agree that SPI is not really about money but that doesn't mean it's
bogus. I see the monetary aspect of it as merely establishing a common,
convenient unit of measure - regardless of whatever units you choose to
track, the index is a ratio and whatever unit you choose is canceled out in
the calculation. It's simply a way of tracking the ratio of man-hours
scheduled with man-hours performed. If you used hours for schedule
performance calculations and currency for cost performance, you'd double the
number of data fields you'd need to worry about in the baseline. Since the
resource rate establishes an identity relationship between scheduled
man-hours and scheduled cost, and actual man-hours and actual cost, one can
use currency as a common measure and simplify the reporting process. It
also simplifys extrapolating the "S" curves to determine Estimated
Completion Date and Estimated Cost at Completion.

Tracking duration doesn't cut it because it doesn't take into account the
effort required versus the effort expended. Time is only coincidental to
progress - the real measure is how much useful outpout is required versus
how much has output been achieved. True, output is generated at a rate that
associates it with the passage of time but the reason for doing the project
is not to pass the time, it is to generate the output. Measuring time
doesn't seem like its measuring anything of signifigance in terms of whether
you've gotten any benefits for your efforts.

Not that you said otherwise, but I'd interject the least reliable method of
tracking progress is % Physical Complete because it's such a loosy-goosy
notion. If one is designing an engine, just exactly what objective measure
constitutes "50%"? Half the drawings done? The engine block but still
working on the cylinder head? Fuels system done but still working on the
cooling and electricals? Front half done but still working on the back
half? I just can't wrap my head around why so many people want to use it
since except in very rare circumstances it's something virtually impossible
to measure.

I'll second the other comments on this. From a human factors perspective
this is an incredibly bad idea. The fatigue and burn-out factors for fire
departments, railroad and airline crews, etc that work rotating shifts is
immense and take an extremely heavy toll in lost efficiency, health issues,
job safety considerations, etc and they work far less onerous shift patterns
than what you're suggesting. I think you'll find this to be extremely
costly, if not disasterous, in the end.

locking up certain tasks in a template

Posted: 04 Aug 2005 02:43 PM PDT

Not at all, Gary, there's nothing wrong with working within a standardized
framework and accepted procedures. Training in effective methodologies and
professional standards is part of the educational process of many
professions - accounting, law, medicine, surgery, forensics to name a few -
and I don't see project management as any different. The problem as I see
it arises when the project managment role is pushed down the organizational
heirarchy in such a way that it leads to a disconnect between the project
manager's responsiblities and his or her authority to make the decisions
required to achieve those goals. I've done classes, for example, for clients
in the health care industry where hospital ward clerks and charge nurses
were given the designation "project manager" and sent to classes in MS
Project. Yet they had absolutely no authority to determine or even the
ability to find out what tasks were required, what resources were deployed,
what timeframes were required or "nice to have" or even possible, no access
to cost data, fundamentally no real management role at all. "Project
management" was simply a clerk collecting information on what the resource's
bosses expected them to do and when they were expected to do it, and
tracking whether they did it. When a PM is handed a template of the
required project framework and told to use it without their having any input
into whether it should be applied in the instant project, their role is
headed in that same direction regardless of their title. The client's need
for a certain reporting interval, etc, can and IMO should be handled as part
of the project's reporting plan, the development of which is part of the
PM's role in during the project inception phase. Certainly the PM shouldn't
ignore the requirements of any of the stakeholders, but the plan shouldn't
be handed to him as a fait accompli with mandatory compliance either.
Determining the reporting requirements in consultation with senior
management, the clients, and other stakeholders and incorporating them into
the overall project strategic plan is so fundamental to the role of a
manager that it shouldn't be left to SOP. Guidelines yes, but templates,
no. As point man for the project, the PM is the one that should be
consulting directly with the client regarding their reporting needs and not
simply following a predefined procedure.
