Office 2003 document shortcuts not appearing on New menu in Vista Posted: 09 Jul 2007 12:40 AM PDT Hi Thanks for the reply, I was however requesting information related to new documents created when you right click within windows explorer and select the New option (folders, shortcuts etc). Normally Office adds entries for the various document types, but they have not appeared for my installation in Vista. Thanks "garfield-n-odie [MVP]" wrote: |

How do I add the ñ to the my fonts and add spanish words and word Posted: 04 Jul 2007 10:12 AM PDT Bear kf4orw <Bear microsoft.com> wrote: Assuming that you are using appropriate keyboard character mapping (US English should do), Windows provides three native methods of inserting so-called special characters and/or typograhical characters (tildes, accents, ligatures, umlauts, etc.). The clunkiest is that crude "character mapper" applet that has come with Windows since 3.1. The second method, also clunky, are to hold the ALT key down while entering either the character's 3-digit ASCII code from the numeric keypad or its 4-digit ANSI character code from the numeric keypad; the ANSI code is the ASCII code with a prepended "zero". Go figure. The third method is just silly and provides pretty good evidence the M$ uses school kids in its "good idea" department: Windows' "dead keys". It's such a looney idea that I can't even remember how to invoke it: Whenever the user types a letter that "could" require a diacritical, it waits to display the letter until the *next* keypress. If the next keypress is that same letter or a space, the character is displayed. If the next keypress is a diacritical marking such as accent, then the appropriate character is printed. Oops: Not all of the necessary characters appear on computer keyboards. A far more elegant solution is to install and use: http://allchars.zwolnet.com/ This little freeware gem has been around for years (since Win3.1, at least) and allows insertion of all of the printable characters in your currently-loaded typeface's characterset by means of mnemonic three-key press. For example, ñ, is produced by: <hotkey>,n,tilde; "em-dash" (; so-called because it occupies the letterspace of letter "M") is <hotkey>,m,-(hyphen or "dash"). Warning, as you may notice in this post, because NNTP -- and therefore many "real" newsreaders -- supports only "real" ASCII, if the characters are not present in the characterset in use by your *reader* he'll see gibberish or "?" instead of the intended character. As a little bonus, allchars' "macro" facility allows the user to store paragraphs of pre-defined text that may then be spooled into the current document by use of a three-key user-assigned tag. Since allchars "wedges" its output through the keyboard buffer, it is global in effect and may be used in any software application that accepts keyboard input and, of course, supports the full characterset. I suspect that the only way overcome the spelling checker's limitations are to find a broader dictionary or to explicitly add "misspelled" words containg the "special" characters as they are encountered. |

Office 2007 Pro - Purchased Product Key, Can't Convert Trial Posted: 27 Jun 2007 09:54 PM PDT Problem solved - Well, I took a chance today and threw a few extra dollars at a CD of the OEM Preinstallation Kit (OPK). (With 5 PC's in the house I'd need it eventually if I ever got the first install going - besides, it was probably cheaper than last night's call to the States). Not only did it work with the product key I'd bought online, it also handled the OEM Medialess Licence Kit I bought earlier by mistake - so Office 2007 is now on the notebook too :) The lesson out of all this? If you live in Australia and like the trial version, ditch it and spend $30 on the OPK before you go any further. It's much better on the blood pressure. A lot of this hassle would be avoided if the Activation Wizard was more helpful (something like "The Product Key you provided is for Version X, but you are trying to activate Version Y"). Thanks to all who contributed. Hope I can save someone else the grief I went through. Cheers Phil. |
