Posted: 13 Nov 2006 08:25 AM PST

Hi Deb,

Have you tried the MS cleanup utilities designed for use in such cases?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816273/

Alternatively,

Uninstall Works
Delete the Works folder
Reinstall.

Microsoft Doesn't Works 2000

Posted: 13 Nov 2006 06:01 AM PST

You said this was a fresh install. If you uninstalled it and reinstalled it,
you have to delete the works folder out of the program files or you get those
"unable to read..." messages.

Floppies are not reliable backup. Spend about $10-30 and
get a USB thumb drive.

For portability use an RTF format.

Yes, but my HP is very old.

It probably has nothing to do with your issue, but if you happen to be
running Norton AV, disable the office plug ins, and see if per chance that
helps.

works 8 and office word

No with Works 8 you can get only Works 8 or Works 8 suite which contains
Word, streets, money, some picture editor and some other stuff. With the
Works suite Word works with Works, in other words if you write a letter, use
mail merge, stuff like this Works will open Word. With Works 8 only it
comes with a very generic word editor and uses that for letters mail merge
etc.

With older versions of Works there was an Word add on that would tell Works
that Word is installed. I am wondering if there is a add on version for
Works 8 that I can download to get the 2 programs to work together.

I don't really want to pay the price of the suite to also get Word when I
have MS Office that already has Word and would also cause less issues not
having two Word programs installed.

The Works Suite disc may have the word add that I need and thats what I
would also like to know. Would be nice if Microsoft had this on there
website to download but have not found it yet.

Customize toolbar?

Posted: 06 Nov 2006 09:07 AM PST

In that 8.5 "update", besides the toolbar customizations being nixed, the
formatting dialogue is now more like the excell dialogue. The borders tab and
fonts tabs are almost identical to excell, except if you format as a number
with 2 digits it defaults to showing negative numbers as (40) instead of -40.
You have to uncheck that pesky box every time. Also the new version doesn't
reduce fractions just like excell. In excell it's bad enough to have to go to
each cell and change from 4th's to halves so it will show 1/2 instead of 4/8,
but in the new and improved works 8.5 the whole column is one or the other,
with no way to distinguish. I went back to 8.0, works fine, lasts long time!
The print preview also works more like excell, except you can't drag the
margins around like in excell. The only thing about the new print preview was
you couldn't zoom in like in 8.0.

Adding holidays to Works 8.5 Calendar

Posted: 29 Oct 2006 09:10 PM PST

Certainly,

Here's a few!

Right-click on the Download Calendar link on the Holiday subject
of your choice.

For instance, here is 'US Federal Holidays for 2005-2010'
http://ical.mac.com/davidtepper/U.S.32Federal32Holidays.ics

Found on page 26.
http://icalshare.com/index.php?topic=holidays&page=26

Save this to your computer.

Load into Works Calendar as instructed earlier.

Error Report

Posted: 29 Oct 2006 02:13 PM PST

Hi John,

In the case of Works Calendar going askew, the two prime suspects
I would suspect are MDAC and MSWksCal.wcd file damage/corruption.

Error message when you try to start the Works Calendar: "Works
cannot access one or more files it needs to run the Calendar."
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303858

It may help to delete the file CalMRU found in the folder, especially if
it is shown with size of 0 bytes :
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Works

Where all else has failed, a clean up can help.

These instructions were provided by Bharadwaj Subramaniam:

=====
Step 1: Show hidden files, folders and extensions
=====
- Double click "My Computer" on the Desktop.
- On the Tools menu, click Folder Options...
- On the View tab, choose Show all files under Hidden Files, clear the
check in front of Hide extensions for known file types and then click OK
to close the window.

Result: Done

=====
Step 2: Back up the original mswkscal.wcd file
=====
2.1 Search for the file:
- On the Windows Start menu, point to Search, and click "All files or
folders".
- In the "All or part of the file named" box, type "mswkscal.wcd"
(without the quotation marks).
- Click Find Now to search for the file.
The default location of the file is: <C>:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Works
2.2 Copy the found file to the Desktop for backup.

Result: Done

=====
Step 3: Uninstall Works 8
=====
1. Uninstall Works 8.0 from the Start menu / Control Panel / Add or
Remove Programs
Note: If you have performed this step, please ignore this step and
continue with the next steps.

Result: Done

=====
Step 4: Copy the Works Clean-up Utility and Windows Install Clean-up
Utility
=====
4.1 Insert the program installation disc for Works 8 (disc 1 of Works
Suite) into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT
key when you insert the disc to prevent the program from starting
automatically.
4.2 Browse to the "MSWorks\PSS" folder on the installation disc.
4.3 Open the "MSWorks\PSS" folder and copy the file "wks8xp.EXE" for
the Works 8.0 Clean Up Utility to the Desktop
(Right click on the file "wks8xp.EXE", and select "Copy". Return to the
Desktop, right click on the Desktop and select Paste)
4.4 Take out the installation disc from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive

Result: Done

=====
Step 5: Run the Windows CleanUp Utility
=====
5.1. Download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, msicuu2.exe, Frm:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983
A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe
5.2. Save the file to the desktop.
5.3. Double click the downloaded file to install the Windows Installer
CleanUp Utility.
5.4. Go to Start-> All Programs and click on "Windows Install Clean
Up".
(If it is not listed then the msicuu2.exe program was probably not
installed properly. Try double-clicking on msicuu2.exe to run the
install again.)
You may find more than one Works item, please remove them all.

Result: Done

=====
Step 6: Run the Works Clean-up Utility
=====
Double click the "wks8xp.EXE" file on the Desktop to run it.

Result: Done

=====
Step 7: Remove all the entries Manually
=====
- Delete folder all the folder related to works in C:\Program File\Microsoft
Woks
- Delete folder all the folder related to works in C:\Program File\Microsoft
Woks
Suite 2005
- Delete folder all the folder related to works in D:\Documents and
Settings\All
Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Works
- Delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Works
- Delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Works Suite
- Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Works
- Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Works Suite

Result: Done

=====
Step 8: Clean Boot your computer and reinstall Works 8.0
=====
8.1 Clean Boot Windows XP:
- Click the Start menu and choose Run.
- Enter msconfig into the open box and click OK.
- On the Startup page, click Disable All.
- On the Services page, mark the checkbox before "Hide All Microsoft
Services" and then click Disable All.
- Click Apply and click OK.
- Restart the computer.
8.2 Reinstall Works 8.0.
8.3 Return to Normal Mode:
- Click the Start menu and choose Run.
- Enter msconfig into the open box and click OK.
- Under the General tab, choose Normal Startup and click OK to reboot
the computer.

=====
Step 9: Start work / Works Calendar

Microsoft Word - VBA "SaveAs" not working both in WORD 2007 and WORD 2013

Microsoft Word - VBA "SaveAs" not working both in WORD 2007 and WORD 2013

VBA "SaveAs" not working both in WORD 2007 and WORD 2013

Posted: 07 Dec 2013 01:52 PM PST

I bought a brand new machine, ACER, 64b, running Windows 8.1. An MS-WORD macro I had for years running smoothly on Vista does not perform the "Save As" command. Instead, the "file picker dialog box" pops open (see below) with a blank file name and suggesting "Word Doc .docx" as default saving format although my code explicitly asks for ".TXT".

Problem happened while running WORD 2007 on Windows 8.1. Installed WORD 2013 on Windows 8.1, nothing changed, the exact same error keeps occurring.

Below the transcript of the code line where the problem lies:

    ActiveDocument.SaveAs FileName:=TxtSalva, FileFormat:= _
        wdFormatText, LockComments:=False, Password:="", AddToRecentFiles:=True, _
        WritePassword:="", ReadOnlyRecommended:=False, EmbedTrueTypeFonts:=False, _
         SaveNativePictureFormat:=False, SaveFormsData:=False, SaveAsAOCELetter:= _
        False

Once reached, the macro pauses, the file picker pops open (see below). If one fills it with a FileName, and press SAVE button, the file is effectively saved under that name but then the Macro stops with error message "Runtime error 4198".

Hope Microsoft looks into it soon because "Save As" is the kind of command that is used everywhere and I guess quite a number of users must be very upset and disapointed with that.

Best,

Alex

Mail merge label formatting

Word 2010 table question

Posted: 07 Dec 2013 11:02 AM PST

Hi all,

When I create a table or add rows to a table, Word likes to move the column, right indent toward the left. When I finish adding my data, I have to manually highlight the column, and then move the right indent all the way to the right. This occurs AFTER I have manually set the right indent during the table creation.

 • How do you control the default right indent in a table?
 • Does Word use a default value?
 • Why does Word move the right indent after I create my table?
 • It often happens when I use the Insert Above or Insert Below function.

Like most table features, this is very annoying. Many thanks.

Microsoft Word 2007 Corrupted Document Equations

Posted: 06 Dec 2013 03:03 PM PST

Good Evening,

I have a problem that it seems that many people have had in Microsoft word.

Namely, I have a document that does not open, but instead gives me the error -- "There are problem with the contents -- unspecified Error -- line 2, Column 496425".

My document has a lot of equations, so I have a feeling that this might be the problem. It does seem similar to the problem on this thread -- http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/11c6f40d-e229-428a-9d76-cf0e5be3b8c8/corrupted-word-2007-file-unspecified-error?forum=officesetupdeploylegacy .

I am not great with computers but did attempt to do some of the fixes specified in the above thread, but am unable to get the file to work correctly. Perhaps somebody could help me out? I would be extremely grateful.

The file is posted on Google drive at the link

Could somebody please help me out?

Thank you so much,

Jake

General question regarding activation

Posted: 14 Dec 2005 05:36 PM PST

Ron,

The 120 days is from an Article (about Windows XP) by late Alex Nichol,
MS-MVP. Have a look here:

http://aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.php#howlong

I assume the same rules apply about other retail products. OEM
reinstall on the same system always require telephone activation as
piracy seems to be on the increase with these types of CDs.

As far as I know, the Retail Version of any products can be moved to any
systems provided it is first uninstalled from the first system.
However, it is your word against Microsoft's and nobody is going to come
to your house to check you have done what you claim to have done. It is
a question of trust.

As far as MS support is concerned, they are required to continue support
for at least 10 years after first release of the product. After that
nobody knows what happens but it is likely that a patch may be issued to
avoid activation once the support has ceased. MS can't continue to have
a database of people's products installation for ever. The cost comes
into the equation whether to have a database permanently or not. Office
XP was release in 2002 and so by the time 2012 comes, people would have
stopped using their XP product - at least this is the theory! I still
use some DOS products and Windows 98SE! But hen I am eccentric!

Tom,

I haven't tried the Custom Maintenance Wizard, but from looking at it,
it would seem that it would defeat the purpose of me deploying the
install through Group Policy because I would then need to visit the
stations to run the Maintenance file. I think I might contact
Microsoft directly and have them explain to me why the .MST file is
being ignored. If I get anywhere, I will certainly post an answer to
this thread for others.

Thanks for your time,

The best at the PayPal-service is that the money can be sent by an E-MAIL
ADDRESS to the other E-MAIL ADDRESS without having to sacrifice the private
bank data.

And therefore also the Online-accounts are represented on the lower list
through E-mail-addresses.

- An example, how much you can earn through your participation alone at the
mail-lists of this program, if you have only 10 participants:

1St plain - 10 participants >> EUR 30.00
2Nd plain - 100 participants >> EUR 300.00
3Rd plain - 1,000 participants >> EUR 3,000.00
4Th plain - 10,000 participants >> EUR 30,000.00
5Th plain - 100,000 participants >> EUR 300,000.00
= >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> EUR 333,333.00

You have the plain 5, therefore position 1 reaches, that is , have you now
EUR 333,333.00 only for the mail-list-participation earns.

Does THAT SOUND FOR YOU NOW LIKE A DREAM, OR??? IF YOU NOW STOP START TO
DREAM AND THIS PROGRAM, CAN YOU YOUR DREAMS LIFE.
SEQUENCE THE INSTRUCTIONS HOWEVER EXACTLY, THAT IS IMPORTANT.
************************************************** *************************************

follow now the following steps to start:

Would register you in that "mail-lists" in order to be at the same time if
it concerns large money earn.

Click up: https://www.paypal.com

(should that link not active, would copy it please into your browser)

a) drawer now your Online-account with 12 Euros up
(You pay on your Paypal-account per bank-transfer or credit card the 12
Euros)

The 12 Euros are laughable in contrast to that what you salary if you are at
the same time and remain at the ball.

b ) would send now of your Online-account on each position of the list Per
PayPal 3,- Euro.

- for use-purpose write you: "Service"
- for E-mail-reference write you: "Mail-list" + Order-number (see below)

How you can send money, you find on the web page of Paypal simply declared.

the present list:

1) net >>>>Mail-list 1
2) de >>>>>Mail-list2
3) de >>>Mail-list 3
4) de >>>>>Mail-list4
5) de >>>>>Mail-list5

Through the fast payment per enamel and the reception , it lasts only a few
days until you get first payments on your Paypal-account.

C) would copy this letter / side, would open your letter program (editor,
Wordpad) and would join the letter there on.

The mail-address deletes now behind position 1.
The mail-address moves now behind position 2 towards the top to 1
The mail-address moves now behind position 3 towards the top to 2
The mail-address moves now behind position 4 towards the top to 3
The mail-address moves now behind position 5 towards the top to 4

Position 5 is now empty - would write here your enamel-address a (the same
like in PayPal)

Why the respectively 3 Euros?

-> The respectively 3 Euros are for your mail-lists-participation.
- > With your registration into the mail-list, you secure yourself the
opportunity to be AHEAD with at the same time if again LARGE business-ideas
become born.
- > You get independent of your present position in the list , faster than
other , information and programs in order to be again from the beginning at
the same time yourself the large money knocks with you.

The registration into the mail-list is the door.
Without your registration, the door remains locked you and earn others
otherwise the large money.

The example above stands for ONLY 10 participants.

Now would calculate once, how much money you salary if you have... 50, 100,
or 200 participants
And that is ONLY the BEGINNING.

There is no boundary for your income that you can produce through this
program!

This business functions, but you exactly must follow it!

No success have many persons BECAUSE they do not comply with the
business-plan.

Especially the direction to not to write to try your E-Mail-address to
another place, for that will not function and will lose you a quantity at
potential income. To write neither the registration WITHOUT payment, yet the
attempt, the characteristic E-Mail-address to position 1.
For without payment no the mail-lists include in, and through that reaches
set the characteristic E-Mail-address on position 1 ONLY the first
participants one and is deleted immediately after that.

It is to be made really a magnificent possibility relatively easily money
without large investments.

If you you decide to participate in this business , would follow the
instructions exactly and you betrittst the way to the financial freedom and
security.
If you read this program, you will recognize that this program is very
profitable, the ENTIRE mail-letter is logical, simple and for each
intelligibly.

Would send this mail-letter at personal contacts and as an answer at people,
who send you its programs , that work like you, already in the internet.
Would register you in Paid-mail-services, newsletter , Newsgroups, would
write in fora.

You show that this program already convinced functioned and are by this
system! It does NOT count AS a spam, if you on offer of the people, that
send you mails , with which sending of this mail-letter answer.

Because of the speed and the lucrative get into-possibility , this program
will overtake already soon other programs in internet.

And that is ONLY the BEGINNING.
If the first payments went in on your Paypal-account, all your remaining
doubts will disappear and will recognize you that this super-draft of other
is superior.

Would store your updated letter now. Would send it per E-MAIL or would
construct it into your Web-side on. Endure this letter
Free classified ads, Paid-mail-services, Newsgroups in the network, ect.
confessed.

Little hint:

Would copy this text / this side and would send it at 40 people. The number
40 in the head would retain is easily reach can, 40 a good number of people
that one in the internet.

Each has the chance to become rich. But only the least use the chance that
offers itself you.

UTILIZE YOUR CHANCE NOW AND BE THERE. HURRY UP !!!

How do I transfer Office to my new computer?

Posted: 09 Dec 2005 10:05 AM PST

If this is the full retail version of Office XP, you can install on one
desktop and one portable, not 2 desktops. If this is the Student's and
Teacher's edition, you can install a single copy only. If this is an OEM
version, it is tied to the machine on which it came preinstalled and cannot
be installed on any other machine, ever.

Office 2003 Student's and Teacher's Edition allows for 3 installs, any
combination. Maybe time for an upgrade if you qualify? I have seen prices
at around $125 for the STE - pretty good bargain for 3 machines.

Hi; The XP+SP2 is OEM supplied, therefore I guess that I'll need to 'play'
with the Office97 install. Now, I feel that being non-computer literate,
I'll need to go the Microsoft-preferred route and buy a new Office 2003.
BUT, I still have the uninstall problem (is that your answer No.3 - I suspect
not?). Sorry, I don't know what 'Start regedit' means.

Thanks for the information, but this does not make sense. I know others that

It looks like your installation is corrupted. Have you tried to
uninstall and install again?

Alternatively, you need to run MS Insaller cleanup utility to delete
everything and start all over again.

Look at this link:

I had a hard drive crash but I managed to save what was on the C Drive.
I ty to do a new install and it looks for my G:\ drive then when it
can't find it it won't let me install.

I have deleted everything I can find, renamed the Office11 directory and
even tried the resource kit. I even tried it's uninstall. And I got a
Registry Cleaner to get rind of unassociated entries.

Help, can someone tell me where that pointer is that points to my G:\
drive so I can delete it and do an install from scratch.

I have MS Office 2003 Small Business Edition.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions and your guidance.

Re-Installing Office - Registering!!!

No you can't deactivate any of the MS programs. Once you are on a
database, it is very difficult to come out of it. The cost of removing
somebody manually is exorbitant. I am on one spam database and I can't
get out of it. I stopped using an email address for about a year and
still the messages were still coming. the account was also closed for
one complete year but no effect!

What you need to do is to copy two files before formatting the HD. The
two files are:

OPA11.DAT
OPA11.bak

These files are located in (default location unless changed by you):

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Office\Data

Also, please note that Office 2003 can be installed on two systems so if
you have used only one so far then it should be easy to install and
activate it on another.

Before copying the two files, please ensure you have renamed the new
files after reformatting to:

OPA11.001
OPA11.002

Please use common-sense when replacing the original files to avoid
headaches.

I bought a script for an on-line word-like text editor where several users can
work on the document. The instructions are minimal; it only says to upload
to the server, set permissions, and go. But the script also requires the use of
several .html pages. I'm going to try to put the .html pages on the public_html
and point to the cgi script.

But I hoped I could just upload to the server and go, as the docs say. I would
send the code, but since I paid for it (nominal 10 bucks, but payment nonetheless),
I probably should not.

We've been able to a variety of remote administration securely using the
core openvpn tunneling and vnc approach including managing a variety of
windows boxes, having a secure connectio to the remote vpn server, etc.

I would definitely recommend using openvpn for a vpn connection.

/proc is a separate file system. So is /boot, usually, which is part of why
things are confusing. Never try to run "/du" on /proc, it's just confusing.

Wait. This is fairly pointless, and it will misreport the contents of
directories that have hardlinks between them for files on the same
partition.

You want to find out what your partitions are with "df", and run "du -x -h"
on those individual partitions to get the right information.

Mouse Disabling Wheel Click Button

I'm afraid not.

Perhaps I have not described the problem properly.

The mouse has three buttons, with the mouse wheel providing the middle
button.

But this is very sensitive. So when I scroll, I often accidentally
click as well, which ends up pasting some selection in into what ever
I am trying to scroll over.

So I want to disable the mouse wheel button, whilst keeping mouse
wheel scrolling. Then I want to use three button emulation to get
middle mouse button functionality.

And alternative would be to have middle mouse button disabled while
scrolling with the wheel is happening. This would be the best option
of all.

I'm sure I had something like this working before.

Cannot boot Linux from hard disk Athlon 64, A8N-SLI

Posted: 01 Jun 2005 10:16 PM PDT

Upon further investigation, I discovered the problem is with ordering
of the
SATA disks. The disks are connected to connectors SATA1, SATA2, SATA3
on the motherboard, and they are seen as such by grub at bootup:
SATA1 = (hd0), SATA2 = (hd1) & SATA3 = (hd2). However the kernel sees
it differently: SATA1 = /dev/sdb, SATA2 = /dev/sdc & SATA3 = /dev/sda.
All the boot stuff is installed in /dev/sda1, but then at bootup time
that
partition appears as (hd2,0) to grub, not (hd0,0).

Any ideas how to fix this? Or should I just live with it.

Leigh.

Need help printer setup on Redhat Linux

[ Followup-To -> comp.os.linux.setup seems best match ]

In comp.os.linux.setup RC <noaa.gov>:

Sure you can, there's no need for any xserver on the system just
to run some xapplication. X is full network aware. Best idea to
use it through ssh, install the small XFree86-xauth package and
request X11 Forwarding via 'ssh -C -X remotebox'.

On the other hand cups can be setup through its web interface,
again you can use ssh to forward the connection from your GUI
browser to the remote system. Or reconfigure cups to be
accessible from your desktop, IIRC default is localhost only.

Good luck

Linux network buld server

Posted: 31 May 2005 02:13 PM PDT

I have a network server setup. I have a client server that I will use
to build drives over the network. The network server has NTP enabled
and the client server has PXE enabled. Currently the network server
recognizes the client via the PXE and the client recognizes the network
server. I need for the network server to partition the OS drive and
load the OS on the client server.
I am fairly new to this and need to know how I can make this happen?
