Strange Cursor When Using Word

My cursor when using Word has suddenly become a blue, rotating (clockwise), blinking circle instead of the customary vertical, black, blinking line.  This only happens in Word and continues no matter what page I move to while using Word.  I associate the rotating circle with the computer searching for something, a web page, for example.  I do not think the rotating circle in Word, as a cursor, is normal.  Can anyone explain how to solve this issue?

degree sign

I see that a nonbreaking space looks like a degree sign on the page (but doesn't show in print).

But how do I create an actual degree sign? I use that character a lot, and except for a nonbreaking space I don't see it offered anywhere. In particular, I would like to program my keyboard to use Ctrl+D to insert a degree sign.

Underlining of formatting.

I have to open many documents in Word 2010 that were created in earlier versions. Word underlines most of the text in blue, and asks me if I'd like to make the formatting consistent with Normal, or to replace direct formatting with some predefined style. Is there a way to tell Word not to check this, and not to underline anything in blue? It is extremely annoying to have to click "ignore rule" several times in every document I open--and what's more annoying, it checks it every time I open the document, even if I've saved after telling it to ignore the rule. I assume there must be some easy answer, but it has not been easy to find.

WORD 2003 Page Set-up problem

In WORD 2003 the cursor is at the very top of the blank page.

I opened "Page Set-up" and the top margin setting is, as it should be, 1".

If I open the header, and type a dot,

when I close the Page Set-up the proper top margin is in effect.

I think I have deleted Word from my computer. How do I get it back ?

So I have documents with keywords and i need to be able to bold the whole line that the keyword or character is found on.

 

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Removing partial duplicate lines in Word

I have reports with duplicate names, and I have a macro that can remove the duplicates.

 

My problem is that sometime the duplicate names are not removed because of sometime there is metadata that is not the same from one duplicate to the next.

 

It looks like this

I can get to

My problem is that I need to keep at least one line without taking the metadata out of that one line because i don't have full control over these reports so i can't just delete all the metadata.

footer help

I need to "chain" many patient files into one long document. Each one has a footer which would have a new name, patient #, and DOB, plus a new practitioner name. Each new footer also needs to start numbering with Page 1 of x (I did learn how to put that coding in).

When I create my document and add a new footer, it changes the name and other text of the footer from the first file. How can I keep them separate and restart page numbers with each new client?

Also on footers: the Help section says I can double-click in the footer area to edit it, but that's not working. How can I make it work, or how can I more easily edit the footer than going through all the menu levels in the ribbon?

How can I custom reinstall Office 2003 SBE?

Hi Greg,

To 'reinstall' Office with different settings you'd
need to first uninstall it then restart the PC then install
using the 'custom' installation choice, but, if your copy
of MS Office System 2003 is running satisfactorily then
when you are in Add/Remove Programs and select the [Change]
button, you can choose the Add or Remove Features choice
to take you to the listing of all features.

Once there, if you choose the top 'sugar cube' and set it
to 'run all from my computer' you can add any missing features
when that is accomplished, or you can choose differing levels
of the feature tree and set individual features or groups of
features to run from your computer or to run on 1st use or
to not available (don't install that feature).

The real question here is why does pressing "Next" after selecting "I want to activate the software by telephone" make the Microsoft Office 2003 Activation Wizard dialog disappear? Can anyone imagine why this might happen? If I could get to contacting Microsoft about it, the other question would be answered...

Thanks! I went to Msconfig and unchecked the Office
programs that were auto loading, they were all grouped
together and not difficult to find. I never saw them
before, and have no idea how they were checked.

The Microsoft Office Tools program still loads at the end
of the boot sequence. I tried to find it in the Msconfig
section to turn it off, but was unsuccessful. Can you
suggest how I can turn that one of so that it doesn't auto
load?

Parallel installation of Office 97 and Office 2000 on a W2k

Hi Matt,

My PC has versions of Office going back to DOS ones <g>

Office 97 uses the older AcmeSetup for installation and
MS Office 2000 and higher uses MS Windows Installer (MSI)
When you switch to an Office 97 app (can't have multiple
Excel copies) the installer resets registry entries to make
that version current, but you don't see any dialogs to advise
you of that. When you next run a newer version you will see
an 'Installer preparing to run dialog' as that version switches
things back so that it can run correctly. In general, for the
scenario you outline, things should be okay for support purposes
although there could be some issues if you're using add-ins
in the two versions. Also, if you're trying to replicate
a specific error condition, then you may not see it in a mixed
environment (i.e. you may have a 'fixed'(updated) common DLL
in play, for example).

You may want to look at using MS Virtual PC setups with the
different versions of Office. There's a 45 day trial copy
available.

The reason for the parallel installation is that we need
to give user support (mainly less complicated telephone
support) to users with different Excel versions.
The idea is that the operator should have the exact same
menus and dialogues as the caller.

Office 2K install runs every time a user logs in

Thanks for your help.

This is a school so all users have roaming profiles, and don't have a local
status: group assignment as far as I understand. The profiles are petty much
locked down, but I suppose the only problem is that the office install isn't
saved once it has run once.

I read somewhere once about giving permissions to something on the local PC
to all users, if that jogs anyones memory.

I also suspect the install maybe needed some switches to enable office to
run in this environment/ manner

Hi, Ron. What version of Winfax Pro do you have? Word 2002 requires
Winfax Pro 10.02 or later. I'm not sure what version works with Word
2003. In any case, you might be better off uninstalling the Winfax
add-in for Word, because many users experience startup problems when the
Winfax add-in is installed.

But I must note that I no longer use Office 97 as I installed Office 2003.


You might want to try setting up Compatibility Mode for Windows 2000 and
then enabling it on each individual Shortcut to an Office 97 Application.


To setup Compatibility Mode for Windows 2000, take a look at the following
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article:

I think I found it. To use the /m switch with the setup wrapper (that in
turn passes it to msiexec where it is used), you must have ISMIF32.DLL
located somewhere in the path. See msiexec command line options:

It is very possible that my test PC at work doesn't have the adv client on
it yet (I was testing from my CD installation, not an SMS push) or it has
issues.

Anyway these appear to be the requirements for using the /M switch:

1) ISMIF32.DLL present (normally there from an SMS client install, but
comes with some dev products like Visual Studio 6.0)

2) No extension (i.e. .MIF) should be supplied

3) Should not include path (mif will always be placed in %systemroot%)

4) Name specified must be 8 characters or less


I know I met 2-4, but I bet ISMIF32.DLL not being in the path is the
problem.

Thanks for all your help. I finally came to the same conclusion that it
is a winmodem. Unfortunately, the people at most computer stores know
nothing about Linux and so didn't tell me that it was a winmodem.

the parts, that it's a 64bit PCI card, but works in a 32 bit
slot. If you are working with x86 hw long enough, you can mostly
tell from a view on the card, if it looks like quality, 3ware
does.;)

Now someone suggested soft-raid, another good idea, even if a
little more work, if a hd needs to be replaced. But unless hds
are hot-plug-able, you need to take the system down anyway.

on MBR and it didn't work either.

you said it would do the job:

Well, I know now it's running, so the box should be in runlevel
2,3 or even 5, but I can't tell for sure and someone might have
started lm_sensors in another runlevel manual, so it doesn't tell
me anything about the actual runlevel.

On the other hand:

runlevel
3 5

Tells me I'm in runlevel 5, exactly the info asked.

Thanks for clearing that up. I started with Redhat 4.0 and set up a number
of company intranets using Linux. Then it was back into the Windows world. I
never could convince the company to use Linux for anything else. Hence I
have little day-to-day experience on Linux and a lot of anitquated,
confused, knowledge. I am currently running Redhat 9.0 and would appreciate
any and all polite corrections when I wander from the truth.
