This is my problem: in the past few days my page has been like this on Windows word 2007, and there is usually a gap at the top! when I go to view and make it one page its fine but as soon as I zoom in it goes back to this. I've tried changing the margin, the size of page and different viewing options, please help meeeee!!!!!

In Word 2003 I was able to create a template for a particular document and insert a footer with an auto
text filename and path, so that when that template was used to create a new
document and saved as a document the footer changed to reflect the document's
filename. If the document was subsequently opened and revised and re-saved with
a revised filename the footer would automatically change (not initially when
viewed but would be changed on the print out or subsequently when closed and
re-opened)

In Word 2013 it doesn't seem to be possible to do the same. Progress??!!

I can add the field containing the filename and path to the template footer but this does not automatically
change to reflect the document's filename when saved.

Is there a way?

Hi All,

I'm trying to help someone less tech savvy than myself with a Office Word 2010 issue in that the want to turn on and use the "Readability Stats" option when running the spell/grammar checker. The problem is that upon going to the appropriate Options>Proofing check boxes the option to "Show readability Stats" is greyed out thus making it impossible to activate it, is there a way to ungrey it and activate it?

The version of Office 2010 Professional Plus is a Volume License installed by a now closed/ceased trading local IT shop as far as I know, also when you start Word there are pop up boxes saying that to run this option Macros need to be enabled at the point of installation, which I presume has not been done, I am presuming that the greyed box and macro problem are related but then I'm probably wrong.

So far I have not found any installation file left by the IT shop so I don't want to uninstall Office completely incase I cannot get Office 2010 back. I've tried a "Repair Install" from the control panel but still no success. Unfortunately I don't have immediate access to the laptop concerned as the owner still uses it for their work and travels a lot so I would require options to try as and when I can get access to it.

I often use the A5 template in word 2003. I have always just been able to go to 'page set up' > 'paper', and been able to select A5 as an option. I tried to do the same today, only to find the 'A5' option has vanished of the face of the earth. Where did it go, and how do I get it back?!?

For the record, I can't think of anything that I might have done to upset things. All I do with my computer is use word, surf the internet, edit pictures and play the odd game... so I haven't been messing around with program files or anything.

Also I haven't installed anything recently.

I have no idea what button combination I pressed a few weeks ago but I did something to change the look of my save dialog boxes in all of my Office products. I don't have the normal box where you have your file folders at the top of the box and the file name, type bar at the bottom. I have just a screen with the following list of characters: File name

What operating system are you using?

If Windows XP you might try using the cleanup utilities.

Kabanakim,

Another way might be to create a new field if there is room to do this. Also
take a look at the LOWER/UPPPER/PROPER formula.

If you just want to make say all last names in a field to upper case you
might want to use the formula =UPPER(LAST NAME), first create new field
called say "UPPERLASTNAME". Good luck. Dave

If you had the Works install CD/DVD you could try reinstalling Works.
I'm guessing that it came preinstalled on your PC. In that case you
need to contact the PC manufacturer for how to reinstall Works. In some
cases, the needed files are in a folder on the hard drive. In others it
might be on the PC manufacturer's DVD. And in others, the only option
they have to restore the PC to the factory settings which wipes out all
of your data.

Another option is the Works 8.5 update. Although it doesn't seem to
directly address your problem, the update may fix something that is

The Word Viewer is actually the Word program with the edit/save options
disabled. As such it probably needs the same converter that the full
Word would need.

I new copy might not help you anyways,

What can happen is the registry entries for a program get corrupted, or
some program files. And an uninstall/reinstall won't necessarily clean
this up.

What needs to be done is an uninstall, then some registry cleanup and/or
file clean up, then the reinstall.

The cleanup step is the trick. I don't know what that involves for
Word, but someone in a Word newsgroup may know.

If you enter your info using the spreadsheet time format, then your formula
would be a simple sum function.

Your example: 1.24 is 1 minute 24 secs

Should be written as 0:1:24, which will display as 0:01:24

In other words, zero hours, 1 minute, 24 seconds. "spreadsheet time format"
(hr,min,sec)

Lets say you input:

0:1:24
0:2:23
0:20:18

I will display as:

0:01:24
0:02:23
0:20:18

Then format your Total cell as Time using Hour, Minute, Second format.

Assuming the above display is in Cell A1 thru A3.

Your formula in Total cell is =SUM(A1:A3).

The result would be: 0:24:05

Removing Words from Spell Check

The file that contains added words for Works (2000 thru V9) is CUSTOM.DIC.
On my Vista Home Premium system it's in
C:\USERS\xxxxx\AppData\Roaming\Proof\CUSTOM.DIC, where the xxxxx is your
Windows user ID. You can edit CUSTOM.DIC with Notepad, deleting any word(s)
you wish. This file IS in a hidden folder, so you'll never see it unless
you make the Folder Options Ken points out.

indeed seen Works 6 on the 'Net at a fairly inexpensive price. Your assist
should be most helpful, as part of the issue was that I didn't know which
Works version would be compatible with the old data.

Your assumption is correct: I no longer have the old PC, although there are
days when I wish I did.

I haven't tried to copy the diskette files from Windows Explorer, since I
actually didn't get that far. I inserted the diskette and tried to open the
A: drive from "My Computer." That's when I received the message that the
disk had not been formatted and could not be opened. Since the two Word docs
on the diskette read just fine, I know formatting isn't the real issue.

Thank you again - I'll start shopping for Works 6, and will avoid Works 8
and 9.

twice (as wdb-file and as csv-file) will become a routine. Before 2000 I
used Works 4.5a and it worked like a dream. Helas Microsoft broke the
program and left us with a program that we had loved but had become

complicated formulas for amounts, dates and times, but then worked
around the issue the way I told you. The benefit is that calculations

There is an alternative, of course: openoffice.org. I use it now; in

the qualities of Works' database in spite of Microsoft's crippling of
mail merge.

You don't download it. You buy it. I personally recommend using Amazon.com.
Also, make sure you get Works *Suite*, not just Works. Works does not
include Word, The suite does.

There are several "home remedies" for a scratched CD. Since that version is
a done deal, you may want to try one of them. Nothing ventured, nothing

Download the following tool from MS Website and install it. If its
installed, try removing Office 2003 trial version using the same application.
Also, do rename the Microsoft Office folder under C:\Program Files.

If you want to use an enterprise server distribution, you should consider
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (CentOS 4.2 is a clone of this) or SuSE (I do not
know what version they are up to). Enterprise distributions tend to be for
servers and are not the latest and greatest, but tend to be the most stable.
I use RHEL3 on my main machine that is a desktop workstation, and CentOS 4.2

gets added.

If you want the latest and greatest, and like Red Hat, go with the Fedora

Soundblaster ISA card. After spending several whole days trying to get it to
work, I gave up and put in a newer PCI Soundblaster in there and it worked
fine. It may be that the 2.6 kernels do not come with support for those old
boards, though I am surprised that they ever delete drivers for stuff.

IIRC, Fedora Core 2 did not run my ISA CT4170 either, although all the RHL
from 6.0 up to 9 did support it and Windows XP Home supports it. But now it
is sitting in my spare parts bin, along with the ISA dial-up real modem.

The other major difference from a sysadmin point of view, is that VMS has
around 40 privileges, each broadly related to a job function. For example if
you want to administer printers or tape drives, you need OPER. That way,
your operators can do protected operations without needing the full root
access. As an administrator, I had SETPRV, which allowed me to claim the
privilege I needed to do a specific operation. I rarely ran as SYSTEM (the
equivalent of the root account). I did once get badly bitten by running a
system upgrade while NOT logged in as SYSTEM however - the process quotas
were wrong for the operation. (The non-paged memory quota I think - another
difference from Unix).

It is however long enough ago that I'm no longer fluent in EDT, so rather
than trying to find the EDT clone for Linux, I need to decide on an editor,
and learn it. (Just one though - I find learning editors stressful for some
reason, so stick with one per operating system as far as possible.)

I've been reading this group for about a month now. I am not surprised by
the types of responses I got from various people (except that Peter's wasn't
as harsh as I expected).

LDAP over Putty

In that case, you must tell putty to forward the port to the ldap server.
Putty will tell the ssh server on the linux side to connect to the server
you say to putty.

I haven't used putty for a few years now, but the openssh client has the
option format -L [bind_address:]port:host:hostport, where host:hostport
should be the ldap server and its port. bind_address is an address on the
ssh client. A typical client can have the loopback interface, a nic for
the local network, and a ppp interface to the outside world, and most
people want the port on the client side to be available only on the
loopback interface, i.e., only to the client computer itself.

Googling seems to indicate the numbers are write, rewrite, and read.
OK. I vote for k3b since it actually lets you burn an iso.

Fedora has a complete set of help documentation which you should review to
understand what the steps and final goal of the installation.

Study the documentation for the version of Fedora you will be
installing.

In general, you would proceed as follows:
1. Backup your Windows partitions.
2. Decide if you need to resize parititions. If all of the disc is
allocated to Windows partitions, then you will either need to resize,
recreate, remove, or avoid touching Windows.

Option A: Resize windows partitions. "Partition Magic" is probably the
leader in Windows tools for resizing partitions. It works by
consolidating free space and moving data as necessary to fit on a smaller
partition. It has worked for me, but it is not free (about $50 when
bundled with Ghost.) When resizing, plan how much space you want to
allocate for each OS. You say you have 15G free; therefore, you
might assign 14G for the Fedora install. That will give you some working
room on your new OS, and very little for changes on XP.

Option B: Recreate windows from a backup. This might be fastest if you are
competent and have a good backup/restore procedure. There are a lot of
"gothas" with this route, so only choose this option if you really know
what you're doing. First, take a snapshot backup of your drive. The
method I use is ntfsclone, a linux utility. Unfortunately, you can't
run linux utilities until you're running linux (catch 22).

Option C: Remove windows (Best of all!). Go for it. Then, if you
should need to refer to any of the old data, you can "mount" your
backup under linux. This is possible with ntfsclone image files.

Option D: Avoid touching windows (leaves fingerprints ;-)). Buy a
separate disc drive dedicated entirely to linux and do not touch your
Windows install.

BTW, I have heard some recent versions of SuSE linux can do the partition
resizing for you as part of the installation process. This may or may not
be true for the version of FC you are installing. Caution: refer to "Step
1." above.

When you have free space on your disc, then you can add partitions.
Depending upon what your plan is with Windows, you should consider
reserving partition 1 for Windows, that is, if you are keeping it.

Here is one option for you paritioning scheme:
Partition Size For
1 x? XP
2 y? XP Data
3 13.2G FC (linux root)
4 0.8G FC (linux swap)

With that plan in mind, begin the Fedora install. Keep in mind the basic
rules for disc partitioning (in the PC world):
1. There can be a maximum of 4 primary partitions.
2. Windows likes to be on partition 1
3. A primary partition can be assigned to be an "extended partition."
4. An extended partiton can contain more partition entries (not limited
to 4). Partitions within the extended partition are referred to as
"logical partitions."

See above. Debian stable (where you probably have your 2.4 kernel) is also
not reasonably expected to have the latest device drivers and software
compatibility.

I still think SuSE 9.3 is asking for trouble in any print server setups. But
are the laptop and the server both running the same kernel, the same CUPS
version, the same configurations? I thoroughly doubt it: transferring
printer configurations from SuSE system to SuSE system is compounded in
complexity by the autoyast configuration wrappers, so even if you set things
identically in the configuration tools to all appearances you can still have
unknown differences under the hood. Autoyast is *BAD* about reporting the
details of its software configurations, and even worse about re-writing them
unannounced.
