My Microsoft Office is Dead.

Posted: 09 Nov 2013 03:30 PM PST

Greetings, English isn't my first language so I hope you can understand what I'm going to say...

I have installed Microsoft Office a week or so ago. It worked well for a while until today. Couple of hours ago, I tried to open Word when "Something went wrong, try again later" or something like that popped up on the screen. I searched the internet for an answer but nothing helped. I can't get into safe mode and I can't "Repair" it, because when I try to repair it "something went wrong, sorry we ran into a problem" pops up.

What could the problem be? I've scanned my laptop and it's secure. I appreciate the help. Thanks!!

Can I create some sync'd text?

Posted: 09 Nov 2013 02:45 PM PST

I want to know if there is a function that synchronize certain stuff, like text or pictures. Which follows the document save.

Like I can insert a text somewhere, and I can reference it somewhere else in the document. If I change one of them the another one will follow the change.

Does quick part do it? I still don't really understand how to use it and the philosophy behind it.

Thanks :)

Tabs missing from my Ribbon

Posted: 09 Nov 2013 02:22 PM PST

I purchased Office 2013 and in every one of the programs, I'm missing tabs from my Ribbon. There are gaps where they should be, and on the shortcut drop-down menu, there are check marks next to "invisible" entries.

I've provided a screenshot of Word and PowerPoint for reference.

The programs are brand new and I haven't created any files with them yet - nor can I, with some of the critical functions not even showing up.

Touchpad scrolling not working in Microsoft Word 365

Posted: 09 Nov 2013 01:29 PM PST

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad L430 with Windows 8.1 and Office 365 University installed. This is the problem: my Elantech Smartpad refuses to scroll properly in Microsoft Word. It scrolls fine in Excel and OneNote; but not in Word. My regular mouse's scroll wheel functions fine in all three applications.

I tried to download upgraded drivers for my touchpad, but to no effect.

Suggestions?

changing the default language

Posted: 09 Nov 2013 01:18 PM PST

I have an open office document that I have saved in word and it is quite long so I really don't want to retype it.  Every time I try to use spell check it goes automatically to german.  I go in and change the default language to English u.s. and try to spell check but it won't work.  It keeps going back to german as the default.  If I try this on another document it works.  I don't know what I am doing wrong.

Help please.

VBA macro form/bulk letter with Excel data - If clauses (MergeField)

Posted: 09 Nov 2013 08:25 AM PST

Hi,

I want to write a form letter with data of an Excel sheet (Name, Address, etc.).
I found the following very helpful document:

But there are not any if-not conditions. Since I need to divide between female, male, company  (concerning salutatory) etc., I need to
query the values of the Excel sheet fields and use an if-then condition to decide if something should be written to the form letter.
Is that possible?

According to the example above, I would need something like the following pseudo code:

if MergeField("NAME") IS NOT NULL then                       ''e.g. if a company is entered in another field, the name field is empty
       word.InsertMergeField MergeField:="NAME"
end if

Hyperlinks in MSWord 2010. Target frame issue

Posted: 09 Nov 2013 08:21 AM PST

I want to create some hyperlinks in a Word document and know how to do that. But I want the browsers to open new pages/tabs and want to include the "_blank" instruction as part of the Hyperlink dialog. I get offered the _blank option in the Target Frame dialog and can select it but Word ignores the instruction when I click ok. Any ideas on how I can persuade Word to accept the _blank target frame option? Most grateful for any advice.

Blinking curser in Word

Posted: 09 Nov 2013 08:05 AM PST

My curser blinks continuously when I try to print a document from Word 2010.  I think it may be related to the printer/spooler. I did get into the sys 32 file but there was nothing there.  I am not experienced in computer repairs so any directions need to be pretty complete.  I really appreciate any help to correct this issue.

Word found unreadable content...

Posted: 09 Nov 2013 06:49 AM PST

I am working on my dissertation and recently purchased Word 2010.  Now, when I try to open my paper I get an error message that "Word found unreadable content in....."  When I select yes, to recover that contents I then get another error message that says "we are sorry.  We can't open ......because we found a problem with its contents."  The details then state:  "Operation aborted: max-element-depth constraint violated."

I have tried doing the open and repair and then saving but nothing works...help please?

Page Break in Word 2013

Posted: 09 Nov 2013 06:31 AM PST

I have just bought Office 2013 and started working on a file which I had created in Word 2010.

In all previous versions of Word that I have used since the 1990s, I frequently used the Table>Around>Positioning feature in order to position tables at the Bottom relative to the margin.

In order to ensure that tables stick to this position I insert a 'page break' after the table.

In Word 2013, this feature does not work. The tables do not recognise the inserted 'page break' and overlap into the following pages even though the pages where I want the tables to be located have sufficient space for the whole tables. Given that the file that I am working on (against a very tight deadline) contains many tables, I had to go back to Word 2010, where the table positioning commands function as I want them to.

I would be grateful for advice regarding this matter.

Thanks

Paul

microsoft word automatic save

Posted: 09 Nov 2013 04:50 AM PST

Hello am working on a company that use Microsoft office 2007, very often when people start making a word document they forgive to give it a name and save it, and sometimes they close the word without saving, and they lose the document. Is there any way for Microsoft word to automatic saves a new document even if the document wasn't give a name to it?

How can Word be so shockingly bad?

Posted: 09 Nov 2013 03:26 AM PST

My heart sank but I was not really surprised to see that the new version of Word is no better and in some ways even worse (which is really saying something) than the previous one.

None of the horrible design flaws have been corrected in the new version. Is it not likely, for example, that if I have just drawn a 1-point black line I might just possibly maybe want to draw another one (who would have thought of that?) rather than the menu being reset to 'Home' - whatever on earth that is supposed to mean - and the shape settings reset to default? It's absolutely staggeringly stupid. There's even exactly the same bug in the default settings feature as in the previous version - my default text box inevitably changes itself to white filled with half a black border, no matter what I try to set it to.

The formula editor is just as clunky as before. Surely if, for example, I have selected an index expression, I will want to type into the boxes of the expression rather than having to go through another two key presses to get there? Was this feature not tested by mathematicians? Or anyone with any sense whatsoever? Or anyone at all?

There are numerous other little bugs, tics and stupidities. Essentially, there is no coherent concept behind the design. It appears to be the result of piecemeal, gimmicky tinkering and a misguided attempt to create a superficially friendly environment which actually makes the package no easier for new users and almost impossible for anyone who has the slightest idea what they're doing.

Given these dreadful frustrations, which make a relatively simple task into an infuriating ordeal, I would be very surprised if there hadn't been thousands of complaints about the previous version. So why have these example of blatant incompetence not been addressed in the new version?

I suggest the answer is that Microsoft is simply capitalising on its monopoly position and has total undisguised contempt for the stupid mugs like me who buy its shoddy products, which appear increasingly like deliberate insults. Microsoft has gone beyond spitting in the sandwich and is actually serving up plates of steaming excrement. That's the only possible explanation for this rickety rubbish (that's 'garbage' for the US English speakers, nice to see you chaps and ladies).

This attitude will destroy the company in the long term, and good riddance. There must be millions of people who passionately hate Microsoft and its products and only use them because they are standard. All of these people, including me, will change to another supplier as soon as the market situation changes away from the current monopoly position.

Changing Office 2013 digital signature hashing algorithm

Posted: 09 Nov 2013 12:33 AM PST

Hello,

I want to force Office 2013 to use SHA1 as its digital signature hashing algorithm, so I installed Office 2013 Administrative Templates and changed the following setting to SHA1:
User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Microsoft Office 2013 -> Security Settings -> Digital Signatures -> 'Select digital signature hashing algorithm'

But this change didn't take effect and Word 2013 signed my documents with SHA256.  I changed it to SHA384 or SHA512 and these changes took effect successfully!!

I guess there might be a preset hashing algorithm e.g. SHA256 and Office 2013 does not support any weaker hashing algorithm :-/

Can anyone help me with this problem?

Word 2013 Freezing when Closing

Posted: 08 Nov 2013 08:52 PM PST

I have a problem with Word 2013 where it will lock up when you try to close it. It becomes unresponsive and when I ask Windows to close the program, it will lock up the computer. The only way I can close Word is by killing its process through task manager. This is the only Office application that has this problem. I tried repairing my install of Office 2013 to no avail. I also disabled any add-ons and disabled hardware acceleration and yet the problem still persists. Any ideas on how to solve it?

Thanks.

Form Fields

Posted: 08 Nov 2013 08:35 PM PST

I have created a template where the top portion contains plain text form boxes and below that two picture content control boxes.  Along side the picture boxes I have placed two text boxes to be used to provide a description of the photos.

I placed a section break between the top portion of the form and the two picture boxes and then protected the template.  This allows me to tab through all the text boxes and then to the picture boxes that allows me to double click and choose the photo I want.  The problem is I cannot click into the text boxes next to the pictures when the template is being protected.

Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Normal Style Disappeared From Style Pane

Posted: 08 Nov 2013 03:49 PM PST

I have a restricted Word 2010 template that listed the Normal style in the style pane. I gave the template to some colleagues, and recently they reported that they have a document created from the template that no longer displays the Normal style in the Styles pane.

Indeed, I no longer see Normal in this document's Styles pane--unless I remove the editing restrictions. In Manage Styles > Restrict for both the dotx and the doc,  Normal is listed as a permitted style (although it says Always Hidden). Unfortunately, in the doc, Normal is not listed in the Styles pane, but it is listed in the dotx.

Can anyone suggest why this might be happening?

Mail Merge Issue - No E-mailing option

I am using office 365 on my MAC. I want to do a mail merge to send out a personalized mailing. So far so good. The only problem I have followed all the steps of the mail merge wizzard is that I can only select "Merge to Printer" and "Merge to Document". I CANNOT select "Generate E-mail Messages".

Does anyone have an idea why this could be the case.

Why SuSE? Cause I know it best, and Rescue is cute little minimal system
that will run and I'll add packages easily (when I figure out how - just cp
or can I rpm to another partition ? ) from bloated SuSE installation I
have...

So my main question is: if you have small distro, whose /boot directory is
empty - what it needs to be bootable ? I guess Kernel and Grub - but is
there anything else ?
Also how to install and configure Grub on another partition (mounted to
development bloated distro) ?

Thanks in advance for your help,

boot up from the CD (Set the bios to boot from CD

Then voila, you have GNU/Linux running on your PC.
Its completely automatically configured without
need for drivers or for you to do anything.

From there you can work out slowly everything.
by try different LiveCDs and read the documentation.
You can run up konqueror and type man:mount for example

man:dd for how to copy disks, man:bash for the console, etc.

Also, try installing - thats simple with LiveCDs like Mepis,
but can become challenging for others.

Anything even close to Visio for Linux?

Posted: 29 Mar 2005 02:11 PM PST

Spake ~./where:

Here is a list of UML programs I collated recently.

[52]Unimodeller
Dunno, never tried it.

[53]Umbrello (KDE)
I'll write this one later. You can't export to PostScript or PDF
from the command line, only via the GUI. Therefore you can't
automate exporting with Make.

[54]Dia (GTK2)
Built as a clone of Visio (before Microsoft bought it). Klugy
interface, but a fancy GUI to edit class internals. Automated
edge placement, but it doesn't cope well if you move nodes
around. Exports to PostScript or C++ stubs (via script).

Fig / XFig (Motif?)
Yecch. Klugy, mouse-centric interface. Difficult (AFAIK) to
change placed objects. Has a lot of momentum, because it's about
the oldest vector tool around.

[55]Inkscape (GTK2)
What XFig would like to be. Fantastic interface design, but
deals with vector graphics in general rather than diagrams, so
it (currently) lacks important stuff like "attaching" edges to
nodes.

[56]Graphviz (CLI)
Graphviz is primarily a graph layout tool, but it has been
extended for in class diagrams. By far the most readable source
files, especially if you preprocess with e.g. CPP and #define
CLASS shape=.... Graphviz automatically lays out both nodes and
edges, so kluges are sometimes necessary to get a better layout.

[57]PST-UML (LaTeX)
A LaTeX package using PSTricks. Never tried it.

[58]ArgoUML (Java)
I Don't Do Java, so I've never tried it.

[59]OmniGraffle (OS X)
Commercial. Very pretty, but when I played with it I didn't like
it's UML support. Nice interface.

IBM Rational Rose (Windows)
I Don't Do Windows, so I've never tried it.

[60]Violet (Java)
I Don't Do Java, so I've never tried it.

[61]Microsoft Visio (Windows)
I Don't Do Windows, so I've never tried it. Public opinion is
that it has gone downhill since Microsoft bought it.

urpmi --auto-select
which will replace all of the 9.1 files with the upgraded 10.1 files and

9.1 The old 9.1 will not be erased and the new one may not be installed.

I didi this upgrade and it went reasonably well. But there were a few

give us some idea about the problem. Perhaps you simply have no

There's an own chapter "43. The X Window System". Dunno if FC2 is

want to know more about basic X server functionality. Be aware
that X it's full multiuser and network transparent, with help of
ssh even through multiple systems.

Any way to change which symbols appear in the legend?

Colin,
To change the legend, change the "Name" field of the symbol in the Bar Style
dialog box.
If you want to hide a bar style in the legend while keeping the symbol in
the Gantt Chart, add an "*" as the first character of this "*Name"

Yes, sorry. About the closest thing to flagged fields is the "marked" task

Thanks for the feedback.

How to account for 2 similar resources where one works faster than other

Posted: 04 Jan 2005 04:50 PM PST

There really is no satisfactory way to take into account slight differences
in efficiency like that. I'm not really sure it matters in a context such
as you describe anyway. When you put two resources together on a task like
that, it implies that they are working together as a unit, a team,
interacting with each other on the task. Thus the efficiency that governs
progress will be the efficiency of the team and not its individual members.
IF they are dividing up the work of the task and working on their portions
independently, so A finishes his part in 4 days while B does his is in 6,
for example, you really have two different, albeit similar, tasks and they
should be listed separately in the plan. Remember, you always should try to
have the resources you plan to put on the task in mind when you estimate the
durations in the first place.

Specify different allocations % during a task?

Work contours are described in the help files. One of the easiest ways to
see how they work is to set up a little experimental plan with one task,
maybe 10 days duration, put a resource on it, switch to the usage views,
apply the various contours and see how the hours get distributed. BTW, task
type matters there so if I have a task with 10 days duration that's fixed
work and apply a bell contour, the duration goes to 3 weeks. OTOH, if the
task is fixed duration and I apply the contour, the total work hours changes
while the duration remains at 10 days.

Nope - there is only one level of undo and it is hard-coded and there's
nothing that can be done about it except hope it will change in some future
release. Sorry about that.

fxs,
To answer your basic request I kept the code as simple as possible. If
it is run a second time, the WBS prefix will get more "00s", and the
code will need to be modified to handle WBSs for added tasks.

If you have a little VBA experience, modifying the code to be more
flexible would be a good exercise. If you do not have any VBA experience
but would like to get the added functionality, write me direct and tell
me what you want the WBS to look like (i.e. default WBS, a custom WBS
structure, etc.). For example, if a task is added between existing WBSs,
should the WBS renumber from the added task on (Project default) or
should existing tasks retain their original WBS?

Date Calculation

Posted: 04 Jan 2005 10:49 AM PST

There're several issues to be explored here. Remember duration is the
amount of working time units designated by the calendar between when work is
first performed on a task and when it ends. It may or may not be
continuous. If a task starts Dec 07 and goes for 5 days, then is
interrupted for a few weeks (perhaps the holidays are shown as non-working
time, a 2 or 3 week stand-down) and then resumes, working for another 5 days
and then it's finished sometime in January the elapsed time is more than a
month but the duration is still only 10 days because the time off in the
middle for the holidays doesn't count.

An alarm bell is going off when you say you "edited the start and end times"
for the tasks. When you edit either one you inevitably establish
constraints on the task, constraints that are rarely justifed. If you edit
the start, you get a Start No Earlier Than constraint. If you edit the end,
you get a Finish No Earlier Than constraint. If you edit BOTH, the
constraint you get is determined by the order you do the edits. BUT, you
really shouldn't be doing either one! The whole reason Project exists is to
calculate the schedule for you - you don't tell it the dates where it should
schedule the tasks -- you tell it what needs to be done, the relationships
between the tasks, the resources you have to do them with, and how long each
should take and then it tells YOU the dates you can have them on, a whole
different paradigm.

I'd suggest you be very, very careful about using the 24 hour calendar as
you are. Doing so implies that when your 60 day task begins, work on it
never stops for over 2 months, the resources doing the work never sleeping,
never eating, never getting a day off for that entire period of time.
People simply don't work that way. The project calendar should describe the
hours during the day that work will take place on a typical task as
scheduled for a typical resource. While your company may very well work
24/7, a single person most certainly does not and the tasks should usually
describe the work done by a sigle person or a team working together as a
unit. If your "standard" shift is M-F, 8-5 that should be your project
calendar even if you really have multiple shifts working in the aggregate
24/7. If you have a task "dig a hole" and you assign that task to Joe
Dayshift, the hours that Joe works are the only one's that matter - it is
totally irrelevant that there is also Bill working Swing shift and Fred
working Graveyard, they're not digging the hole, only Joe is, and the
calendar that governs the scheduling of that task should be Joe's work
schedule and Joe's alone. The project calendar governs task placement's
until you assign resources and so, IMHO, it should be the work shift of a
typical resource, not the company as a whole.
