Spell check "disappeared" in Word 2007

Posted: 05 May 2014 02:37 PM PDT

I have checked in Word Options that proofing is turned on for the document and tried to recheck document. There are definitely errors (names, etc. not found in the dictionary). It seems that Word thinks it should skip checking segments (i.e. the entire document). When I recheck the document, it finishes almost immediately. How do I "turn on" again that the entire document should be checked for spelling and grammar without any being ignored?

Permanently changing Font in Word 2013

Posted: 05 May 2014 11:52 AM PDT

I have spent the last five hours - yes five hours - searching online for answers as to how to permanently change the font in Word 2013 AND make it stay!!!!  I have printed answers from countless people and tried every one, carefully following every instruction.  It changes the font, until I exit Word.  When I re-open Word, the ridiculous Calibri font is back and I have to go through the process all over again.  I work in a law firm.  The legal world widely uses the Times New Roman 12 point font.  Come on Microsoft.  There has to be a simple way to make this happen and make it permanent.

Help with 2007 Word Developer - Removing BOLD from Text Content Control

Posted: 05 May 2014 11:14 AM PDT

Hi.  I am creating a lot of forms for my office to use - and one of the things I like best is using the Text Content Control Boxes.  I cannot seem to get it to un-bold.  I have tried changing it in Design Mode, not in Design Mode, deleting it and starting over - and I just cannot seem to make it work.

Any suggestions??

Thanks.

Mail Merge graph

I am creating a document to send out to individual athletes on a football team after pre-season testing.  I have a mail merge document ready and working to display individual names and scores.  I would like to add a Radar graph to the document to show percentile rankings (graphically) that would need to change with each athlete.  How do I link the graph (word template) to the data (excel document) to adjust with each athlete?

Not getting pop up list of 10 most recently opened documents

Posted: 05 May 2014 10:39 AM PDT

Hi,

I have Windows 7 installed on my laptop. When I click the Start button in bottom left corner of screen and then click Microsoft Excel 2007 I get  a popup which displays the 10 most recently opened excel files.Similarly when I click the Start button in bottom left corner of screen and then click Adobe Reader 9 I get  a popup which displays the 10 most recently opened pdf files.

However when I click the Start button in bottom left corner of screen and then click Microsoft Word 2007 then no popup is displayed.

How can I get a popup to display the 10 most recently opened Microsoft Word 2007 documents.

Awaiting an early reply.

Thanks and Regards,

How can we keep document property fields from changing to Korean when opening an English Word document

Posted: 05 May 2014 07:55 AM PDT

Hi, we have a document template created in US English that uses US English document property fields. When a Korean user opens the document, the fields switch from US English document properties to the Korean versions of the document properties. This causes the field codes to display errors.

We have followed the instructions in this article http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/enable-the-use-of-other-languages-in-your-office-programs-HA010354783.aspx

We have also reattached the original English US Word document to the file and tried replacing the Normal.dot on the Korean team's machine with an English Normal.dot.

Can you think of anything else we may be overlooking?

How can I change the behaviour of mouse text selection in Word2013

Posted: 05 May 2014 07:09 AM PDT

Hi All, I'm a new Word 2013 user. Previously used Word 2007. When I try to select (mouse rbutton pressed + mouse movement) portions of text, I am no able to select parts of a word, the selection always snaps by default to the whole word. Example: in "The quick brown fox" I'd like to able to select "The quick br" but word always snaps to "The quick brown". How can I change this behavior of the selection? Word2007 did not behave like this. Thanks. Stef.

2013 word merge won't work

Posted: 05 May 2014 06:57 AM PDT

For years, I have prepared reports by merging a word template document with an excel spreadsheet, where the variables are entered on excel.

Recently, I started using Office 365 and so automatically upgraded to Word 3013. Now the process for merging doesn't work. Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

These are the steps that used to work.

  1.        Open word template
  2.        Go to mailings and select recipients
  3.        Choose existing list and find the correct spreadsheet
  4.        Double click spreadsheet name to get "open data source" box
  5.        Choose MS excel worksheets via DDE
  6.       Select all
  7.        Preview results, and voila! the report would be populated with data

Also, during this process, the excel spreadsheet I choose opens on screen so I can change data entries, etc.

Now at step 5 after clicking MS excel worksheets via DDE, I get an error message saying "word could not re-establish a DDE connection to MS excel to complete the current task.

In addition, the excel spreadsheet does not open.

The error message has a 'show help' button which refers me to the MS Knowledge Base Article 918594. I took the steps I thought were appropriate but still no results.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Spinning corsor

Posted: 05 May 2014 05:44 AM PDT

Hi

It's a "spinning cursor" problem but slightly different from those raised by others and probably something really simple.

Timing of it may be just coincidence but it may be, as usual, that messing around with the Screen Resolution and Icon Size options confused it.

I dunno, but the coincidence is odd.   What happens is specifically that the cursor jams for a few seconds before working as normal, as if it needs to correlate with the page every time afresh.   What I mean by "jams" is that it moves around the page but eg I can't close the page.  I activate the cursor by clicking on the page whereupon the "spinning disc" routine occurs for a few seconds and the whole page fades a bit for a second or two, then it all comes back and works perfectly well without any more glitsches.

It's as if the mouse is working out what the screen resolution is, or something.

It's a good wireless mouse, not too old.

I tried unplugging the little USB connector which picks up the signal and delivers it to the computer.  Obviously to no avail.

I read the other threads.  If necessary, I could try booting up in safe mode but that seems excessive for such a simple thing.

I followed the other link kindly given by Hannah.   It seemed to return me to such a general Help page, I read that page top to bottom but nothing did I see related to spinning discs or any other obvious next steps.

Any ideas ?  Thanks.

Word Randomly Deleting Spaces Between Words - What is the root cause?

Posted: 05 May 2014 12:33 AM PDT

Problem: Spaces randomly deleted between words.  For example:  This is a sentencewith an example of the error.

Scale:  7 of 14 students (50%) which strongly suggest a non-student specific causation.

Prevalence: As much as 8 occurrences within two (double spaced) pages.

Factors:

  • Original Creation of Documents:  2010 Word for Windows (Professional Plus) & 2011 Word for Macintosh*1
  • Documents reviewed with 2011 Word for Macintosh (possibly edited/resaved as well).
  • Documents submitted to instructor and reviewed for accuracy on 2010 Word for Windows (Enterprise Edition).
  • Random missing spaces between words was observed in the digital version at the destination computer (instructors computer) using 2010 Word Enterprise Edition.

*1 - The documents were almost evenly created between Windows and Macintosh platforms between the 7 students that experienced the anomaly, yet, the anomaly WAS NOT present when the students submitted originally.  In other words, students used both platforms and the anomaly did not exist at the time all the papers were digitally submitted to the instructor.

Factors not contributing:  To be clear, this issue has nothing to do with printers or drivers, this issue is strictly relating to Microsoft Word as the anomaly was observed in the digital version of the files.

Potential contributing factors:  Documents were emailed to Gmail account, reviewed to ensure no data corruption using 2011 Word for Macintosh then they were copied to an external hard drive.  The hard drive was then plugged into a Windows platform and reviewed by the instructor, at which time the anomaly was present.

Root Cause: ???

trasferring autocorrects to a new computer

I have a large file of autocorrects that I constantly use on my laptop in Word 2010.  They are stored under /appdata/roaming/microsoft/office as .acl files and I have transferred them to new computers previously without too many problems.  I have a new notebook using office 365.  Where do I transfer the .acl files to?  There is no appdata folder.

Auto Correct settings lost after restart in Office 2013

Posted: 04 May 2014 06:01 PM PDT

Since Office 2007, when I set Auto Correct options to false (do not change my text as I'm writing, do not correct two capitals, etc) and I click OK, these settings only apply until I restart my computer. After a restart, everything is back to default again and Office is happily changing my words to a nonsense and I have to set the auto correct options again.

How do I resolve this error?

Where can I find out how to uninstall Microsoft Works

You can also download free CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/

When it's installed, go to Tools and then you should have a list of programs
you can uninstall.

Background for MS Words

Posted: 23 Aug 2009 01:28 PM PDT

Ron--

You can do this by inserting a watermark on your page. You can select
positioning and scaling for the watermark, and then your regular text simply
displays on top of it. Textboxes that overlap a watermark kind of mess
things up, as they are non-transparent and overlap your picture with a big
box (then again, that could be a way to crop the watermark).

Watermarks by default are faded by about 80%--if you want your picture to
appear unfaded, be sure to adjust the fade when you insert the picture. I
tried it on Works 8.5, and it's pretty simple, provided that you're OK with
using one of the 9 predefined image placements. If you really need the
picture to be somewhere else on the page, you may have to resort to adding
white borders to your image, so that the borders serve to move the image to
where you really want it to be.

Deleting Templates in Works

You need to talk to the PC manufacturer. They are responsible for all
support of all factory installed software. That's part of their
contract with the software manufactures, including Microsoft.

Most likely Works is included with the recovery disk they provided.
Unfortunately, most of those type disk restore the PC to factory
condition, losing any changes you've made since you took it out of the
box, including all your data and any applications installed since then.

I understand about the setting that you are describing, and this is the

I may have found an answer to this, although it does require an
assumption on my part. When I created my documents originally, I used a
template that came with works. These templates usually have an automatic
date insertion upon creation. If these templates were created with the
date in a "Header" box, this would cause the date to update itself each
time the letter was opened. I guess I can assume that there is nothing
to be done about it.

Linux problem with switch

I had a similar problem, not with a wireless, but with a 5 button
wheel mouse. For me, I had the problem both directions with Linux and
XP, both would go crazy with the mouse at times. I am also using a
Belkin ps/2 kvm. I found that things work relatively well, if when
booting a system, I leave the kvm pointed to that system until the
boot is complete. After that I can switch between systems without
problems. It may be superstition, but it seems to work for me.

Installing Linux on a Windows dual boot system

Posted: 04 Mar 2006 06:55 PM PST

com wrote:

That depends. I presume when you boot XP now, the XP loader shows two
menu choices, and you select one of those to boot. After you insall
Linux, you will now get a new boot loader than runs (chainloads) your
original boot loader when you tell it you wish to boot XP (see below).
The normal way that operates, is that you boot and the Linux loader
(grub or lilo) brings up a menu which allows you to chose between
booting Linux or XP. If you choose Linux, it just boots. If, however,
you choose XP, the XP loader is invoked and it offers the choice of
which XP partition to invoke.

If you have XP loaders (NTLDR) on both of your XP partitions, you can
configure the Linux loader to directly boot either XP partition
without XP asking which partition to boot.

You can also use a third party tool, such as System Commander to make
the selection. That's actually what I do. Then, if you want, you can
make a selection in system commander that boots directly to one of the
OSes. Or you can boot to the OS with a menu that allows you to change
your choice. For example, when I boot from System Commander into an
XP partition, it brings up the XP boot loader menu for that partition.
Now, I have the partition default to booting up the partition I
selected after a timeout, but I still get a 2nd chance to say, oh no,
I meant to boot a different partition and use the menu to change it.

below: When you install Linux and have it install a boot loader, it
should ask you some questions as part of the installation process,
that allow you to tell the loader which partitions you wish to be able
to boot. That selection process fills out an ASCII text file (similar
in concept to boot.ini under Windows, but having it's own format),
that the loader reads in to display its menu. You can later modify
the file to add or remove partitions if the list isn't the way you
like, just as you can boot.ini.

Hope this helps,
-Chris

Umm. If your kernel has loadable modules (and that is the de facto standard

to install the kernel itself, not most of the modules may not be installed

get into details, but I found "make modules_install" to be a fairly
necessary followup step.

It's why I preferred "make rpm", which built up the images for me and would
also report if I forgot to rename the new kernel and tried to put it on top
of an old one with the same name (a source of endless trouble for new kernel
