Word 210 no blank page

I am using Windows 7 and Microsoft Word 2010.

I have been using Word for ever. Now when I open word I don't get a blank page. It's whole page is full of squares. The squares are also on every saved doc that I try to open. I cannot do anything on Word.

Your help will be appreciated.

How to reset all rulers to default across multiple pages in a document?

Posted: 15 Dec 2013 12:12 PM PST

I am working within a several hundred page document. Each page in the document contains one large image. Many of the pictures are not displaying correctly because I originally tried adjusting the ruler settings on many pages individually. Is there a way to reset the rulers on all the pages, so that they are all the same? The way that they would have been before I changed any of the ruler placements? Also if there is a way to select all of the images at once and assign the same height to them, that would also be helpful.

Microsoft Word 2007 - Margins appear to stay at the default setting inherited from the Envelope Add In ?

Posted: 15 Dec 2013 09:55 AM PST

Hi,

Typically, I usually add the envelope to the document I'm working on, only because it's easier to be cognizant of what will print and when.

For some reason, (I think since my upgrade to Word 2007 from 2003), the Margins used for printing are inherited from what I had set for the envelope?

I have been googling around and have not seen this issue documented anywhere?

Can anyone assist in what might be wrong?

If I delete the envelope from the document, the document prints as I expect it to.
If the envelope is with the document, the document is literally truncated as if there was an imaginary margin there.

Thanks for any assistance in advance!

unable to open a new Word or Excel file inside a folder

Posted: 15 Dec 2013 09:53 AM PST

I have just installed 365 on my Windows 7 desktop. I am very disappointed to find that I am unable to open either a Word file or Excel file inside a folder ( which is the way I am used to working in a pressurised professional work context .) When I rightclick  inside a folder, the menu of New items offers me a  very different  selection of apps compared to before, and nothing useful.

I find it derisory to be offered Notepad instead of Word, after allegedly upgrading my software from Office 2007!

To open a Word ( or Excel) file, I am forced to go back to the Start menu, select Word ( or Excel), and then go through a very long sequence of clicking before I achieve a new Word file , appropriately named, and in the folder of my choice. This sequence seems longer than the previous version starting from Start menu - and completely unnecessary.  What hope of avoiding RSI with so many extra clicks!

How can Microsoft justify such a backward step?

Hoping to hear there is a sensible solution out there...

I am writing a book and using Word.  I numbered the pages, but, all of a sudden, the even page numbers have the letters "tts" next to them.  Can anyone help me to get rid of them please?  Thanks

Recover .asd file from Recycle Bin

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 05:52 PM PST

Case:

- Have installed both Office 2010 Professional and the pre-installed Office starter edition.
- Started writing a document in Office Word starter.
- Office Word went Blank

In some way I managed to mistype a button in the (z,x,c, ctrl, alt)-area and suddenly the document went blank. No text, yet i didn't exit or delete anything. Ctrl+Z didn't work, and I couldn't find any recovery files either. I'm not exactly sure, but it appears as the document was closed and a new one was opened. Either way, the new document holds only 16KB, if that matters

After messing around I found an .asd-file in the recycle bin named ~WRA0002. It matches exactly with the description of my lost document. The problem is that I can't find it after recovering it from the bin. I've turned on "show all hidden files and folders" and overlooked \AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\UnsavedFiles and \AppData\LocalLow\Microsoft\OfficeStarter, and even accessed UnsavedFiles directly through both Office 2010 and Office starter, without luck.

My question: This is tearing me down. Where do I find this .asd file. Are there any another way to recover this document?

Office 365 Small Business Premium crashes nonstop - totally dysfunctional

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 04:43 PM PST

Every program on Office 365 crashes nonstop on all our office and home computers.  It's not a virus problem and any fix offered by Microsoft community, etc. is entirely useless.  This is a debacle, and all I get is more shirking of accountability from Microsoft.  I have a business to run that depends on timely production of documents.  This is killing us.  Daily.

OK, Microsoft, make my weekend and make my computer run like it's 1999 (Really, or 2003 or 2010)  Office !

2013 is truly inexplicably the worst, least functional and most poorly supported product MS has EVER produced.  It's crashing businesses like mine and bringing them to the ground, and you guiys are fiddling while my tiny "empire" burns!

So lets fix this debacle NOW!

Problem with filter in Word 2010 Mail Merge

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 03:55 PM PST

I have a main document with associated Excel database.

I click on "Edit Recipient List," and create this filter:

       Field1 is equal to Y
and Field2 is blank

I click on OK.

When I check my main document, I see that I have way too many recipients. So I go back to "Edit Recipient List" to check the filter. It has changed itself. Now it reads:

       Field1 is equal to Y
and Field2 is blank
or   Field2 is blank

This effectively eliminates the restriction in Field1. I clear the filter and start over. Same result every time.  I try reversing the order of the two filters, but it still adds extra "or" conditions that mess up the result. The filter only works properly if you are filtering just one field at a time.

How can this problem be fixed?

error 1310 while Trying To Repair Office 2007 Pro

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 03:20 PM PST

I have Office 2007 Pro running on a Windows 7 PC.  Excel works just fine but when i open Word, more often than not, it stalls and eventually gives a message that it has to close.  I read a post that said that I should repair the installation from the Add and Remove Programs dialogue.  When I do that I get the error 1310 "Error writing to file C:\\PROGRAMDATA\Microsoft\OFFICE\MySite.ico".  I have tried the recommended RUN: msiexec/unreg and Run: msiexec/regserverto no avail.

What can I do to fix this problem?

to perform the task upon install, like Mandriva does. Just try out - your
linux installer will complain if it can't free up enough space.

Linux can read ntfs without any trouble, but not write to it by default.
For windows, there are freeware programs to read ext2/3 and reiserfs:
http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/explore2fs.htm
http://p-nand-q.com/e/reiserfs.html

Common "standard" is fat32, with both OS able to write to it.
However, there is a file size limitation of 4 GB and it stores no
permissions/file ownership/acl.

Not really. Put the ubuntu or whatever linux cd in, ask again here or on a
"samba" group :) if you cannot find a setup tool for "filesharing".
But then, old pcs cannot boot from big harddrives (though linux will
override the bios and be able to address them once booted) depending upon
the bios.

WinXP & Fedora Dual-Boot problems

Posted: 10 Jul 2005 07:23 PM PDT

Well the bios virus protection was disabled --- so that kills that
idea. I'm still scratching my head wondering why the bootloader didn't
install to HDA (master). I've attemped the Linux install twice now,
and on the second attempt I wiped HDB clean to make sure I wasn't
simply overwriting my previous fudged up attempt -- but same result
upon first boot of the system after Fedora is installed. I'm booting
straight into WinXP, and not getting the boot manager.

Redhat 8 Installation, with PXE and Kickstart

OIK, that's nuts.

Ouch. OK, I went through this last year with another OS distribution and
SCSI controllers last year.

The fast fix is to use *ANOTHER* OS, such as a modern Fedora Core to use a
kickstart with a pre-install script, partition the system, dump a tarball of
a fully installed OS, run a chroot "grub-install", and reboot. Voila, you're
done, and the tools will stand you in excellent stead. I've done literally
thousands of systems this way, and it works.

The other is to rebuild your initrd.img and possibly your vmlinuz for your
RedHat 8.0 PXE installation, and add the e1000.o driver you need.

Dude, send me a private email. For a tiny fraction of the money, I'll write
up a set of tools for you from scartch. (Previous versions I've written for
various companies are owned by them, and it's easier and cheaper and faster
to write a contemporary set than go pulling the old tools from their legal
departments.)

Mystery of file systems

Just to add something: The different filesystems have different use. Eg. the
devfs is -simplified- the "file"system, where physical devices are mapped

A:" with this devfs, whereas using ext2fs or reiserfs to map devices
doesn't work.

It might be helpful to look into a file "/etc/fstab" [1], where you can find
the information about where a device is mounted and which filesystem is
used.

Setting CONFIG_HIGHMEM64G=y during install?

Posted: 05 Jul 2005 02:25 PM PDT

Hi Rudi,

I've suspected as much as I've found absolutely zero online regarding this.
Since you seem to be in the know on this topic, could you please point me
towards some information on this topic (especially if specific to x86_64) or
maybe you know the answer to the following.

I basically want to carve off a section of memory by using the "mem=256M"
string in the grub.conf file. I then want to be able to access all of the
available memory outside of this parameter for a memory intensive
application. When using 32 bit processors (i386), I ran into problems with
the 3/1 GB split with 4 GB of RAM and higher. The workaround was to set the
HIGHMEM= option. So, is it safe to assume that x86_64 now allows for native
addressing up to 64 GB with no restrictions?

Thank you so much,

-Mark

Depends on the Linux. If you are running "yum" with a recent RedHat or
similar distribution, you can do a "yum list" and get a list of what are the
base packages and what are updates, and you can compare it to the contents
of an "rpm -qav" to see if there are non-yum managed packages installed.

Firstly, you are replying from google groups in its default

This makes it harder for people not using google groups

It says what it says, you need to install the mentioned
packages/functionality and retry. Hopefully the src.rpm was made
for your distro, or you need to find/install the corresponding
packages of your distro an edit the .spec file. Or look for some
ready to go package.

However, if you're looking for a challenge, try the "text only" install,
but with 64MB of RAM, I doubt if you can get a useable GUI to run.
Although, terminal only should work.

Maybe, an older version of Linux. I ran Mandrake 7.0 and 8.0 on a 133MHz
machine with 64MB of RAM with KDE, and it worked just fine.

Or a different distro designed for old hardware challenged machines like

Key files, terms, and utilities include:
/proc/dma
/proc/interrupts /proc/ioports /proc/pci pnpdump(8) isapnp(8)
lspci(8)

From an old paper:

Those three HOWTOs have been updated since that paper:

Minor quibble - SuSE is "different" than others, so reading the scripts
and tool man pages are going to be important. It _is_ different from the
way Red Hat does things - but then, in spite of the Linux Standard Base
Core Specification (http://www.linuxbase.org/spec/) - which a lot of
distributions claim to follow, there are still significant differences
in the several hundred available distributions. None the less, if you
know how to use 'vi' and the man pages, you can administer any Linux
(or UNIX) distribution from the command line level - it just takes a
lot of reading.

significant number of years ago. Not exactly sure what the hardware is
now (it's reported as "Linux 2.4 in cluster" now), but the name has
been twice changed - first to "metalab.unc.edu" then to "ibiblio.org".
Mirror sites exist around the world, and may refer to it by any of those
three names. Make an anonymous FTP connection to ibiblio.org, and
change to the directory /pub/Linux/ where you will find

-rw-rw-r-- 1 webmaster sungroup 44809 Jul 4 05:41 MIRRORS.html

you want the html document (also as http://ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/MIRRORS).

They've got a few files there - some old, most new. The significance of the
May 8 2001 file date for isapnptools-1.26 is that it's the last release
date for that package. Oh, and that directory listing doesn't include any
files in the /pub/Linux/distributions/ directory, because they've been
moved to another server (distributions.ibiblio.org).

I suspect you have corrupted your resource pool. If at any time you
over-wrote a copy of one of your projects, renamed it or moved it without
first disengaging from the pool you will sooner or later get a corruption.
Be very careful.

Open the pool
In each file select use own resources and SAVE
Delete the pool file and create a new blank project for the new pool
Share in each project. All resources are copied automatically to the pool.
Close and SAVE all projects.

Never, move, copy or over-write any of the four files without first
unsharing.

1. Click Collaborate - Publish - All Information
2. Make sure the "Entire project" option is selected at the top of the

3. Select the "Become the manager for these assignments" option
4. Click OK

Hope this helps.

Resource Usage in Server

Ignacio --

In Project Server 2002 and 2003, when you apply the Resource Usage view, you
see each resource's assignments across all projects in the portfolio. For
each project team member, you will see the individual tasks in any project
you have open, plus a single line representing the tasks in all other
projects in the system. The software is performing as expected. Hope this
helps.

can i group resources into teams in Project 2000

Posted: 10 Feb 2005 09:03 AM PST

Ian,

I had a similar problem - I have a multi project plan, on which 19
resources, split into four teams may work. Have you tried inserting a new
field into your plan, renaming it as (somewhat imaginatively) "Team", and
entering "Team01", "Team02" etc into this field?
This is also really useful when you want to filter your plan to show just
the work carried out by a particular team or teams.

Hope this helps

Lot production schedule which identifies the Numbers of Lots Released over time?

Posted: 09 Feb 2005 10:49 PM PST

Thank you for your response Steve.

I was kinda hoping that MS Project had a function (or method) that provided
a "deliverable" output shedule. The "Lots Released" field is associated with
a particular task (Clearance of Titles) and that's where i am trying to
derive the report (or output) information (or using the summary task
associated with that particular stage).

I could complete what i require in Excel, however i prefer to use Project
for sheduling the contributing tasks associated with the Development process
(as you mention). In that case i'm using two applications to provide output
information common to contributing inputs, which is undesirable.

I'm going to persue trying to use Project as you've mentioned.

Thanks again.

Small amounts of total slack taking tasks of critical path

Posted: 09 Feb 2005 01:17 PM PST

Big alarm is going off here!!! How did you set the standard calendar to 6
hours per day without changing the working hours in Tools/ChangeWorkingTime?
If you are referring to the Tools/Options menu, Calendar page, settings for
Hours per Day & Hours per Week plus the settings for Default Start and
Default Finish, you need to be aware that those fields do NOT affect the
working hours and times of any of the calendars, Standard or otherwise.

The Hours per Day and Hours per Week settings are conversion factors to
allow you to enter durations in units other than hours. Durations are
actually stored in Project in minutes. When you enter a task duration of "3
days," Project needs to convert that into minutes before writing it into its
internal data tables. When you look at a duration value, the duration
column in the the Gantt chart for example, Project reverses the conversion,
retrieves the minutes and converts that value back into the units you like
to see the duration dispalyed in. If the Hours per Day setting is the
default 8 hours, when I enter Task X and say its duration is 3 days, Project
knows I really mean 3*8 or 24 working hours * 60 minutes per hour and stores
the value 1440.0 as the task duration. When I look at the Gantt chart, I'll
see 3 days. Now here is an interesting observation - if that task starts
Monday and we are using the default Standard calendar, it will start Mon
0800 and finish Wed 1700, 24 working hours later. BUT, if I now change the
hours per day on the calendar options page to 6 such as I bet you've done,
it will now show the duration to be 4 days EVEN THOUGH the task still starts
Mon 0800 and ends Wed 1700, no change in the schedule of the task at all.
Why? Because we've changed the conversion factor. 24 hours is 3 8-hour
workdays but 4 6-hour workdays and all we have actually changed is what we
choose to call a day. The *calendar* hasn't changed and still shows work
hours of 0800-1200 and 1300-1700, meaning each 24 hour time period according
to the clock on the wall now actually contains 1.33 working days, what we're
calling a "day," in it. We work 8 hours on each day of the week but a "day"
is defined as a 6 hour time block, thus each day of the week regular working
shift has more than 1 day's worth of work taking place in it. For Project's
calendars to make sense, the work hours defined for the Project calendar and
the hours in the "Hours per Day" field should normally be equal but changing
one does not automatically change the other.

The Default Start and Default Finish fields on that page are equally not
what they seem. All date fields in Project are actually date/time fields.
When Project calculates a value for one of those it uses the Project
Calendar to determine where on the clock to place the time. Likewise, when
you use a pull down calendar, like when you click on the pull-down button to
pick a constraint or enter the Project Start date, it also uses to Project
Calendar at the moment to determine what the start time on the selected date
will be. But if you *manually* type a date, for instance by typing the date
a task should start, *without* typing a time, Project must supply some
value. It gets the one it uses from the Default Start field on that
calendar options page. Changing that field DOES NOT change the working hour
definitions you see when you're editing the calendar in ChangeWorkingTime.

Viewing Project Names in Resource Usage View

Posted: 09 Feb 2005 06:33 AM PST

Hi Ian,

That is absolutely logical.
You simply do not see tasks in Resource Usage but assignments (which have
text1 etc.fields of their own)
You can read all about it in
http://www.mvps.org/project/faqs.htm
Faq 37: custom fields in tables.

OBTW, it would be advisable you use the true names of the views.
When you mention Resource Usage Graph, do you mean Resource Usage (which I
suspect) or Resource Graph)?

Hi Christopher,

you've done that, be sure to apply all the latest updates.

Missing support files are usually indicative of either a faulty installation

Posted: 25 Jul 2009 04:07 PM PDT

Sorry nobody got back to you sooner, but newsgroups are *never* the venue
for immediate response - it may take as much as 24 hrs. for your message to
even appear, let alone be read & responded to. That's during "normal
business hrs.", Saturday evenings are even less likely to be when most of us
are spending our time in the newsgroups :-)

Anyway, if it's still of any use I'll try to give some general advice but
your situation isn't clear - you've given no indication why you think you
need to reinstall Office 2008 in the first place. Obviously I can't say for
certain, but if you're experiencing some sort of problem with your current
installation it most likely isn't a *re*installation that will correct it.

Reinstalling complex apps such as Office is *never* the first step to
correcting a problem & rarely is it a part of the corrective
process. In fact, it can make matters worse & even cause other issues. In
those cases where it is necessary it is only effective if a proper Remove
Office is done first & then all pertinent updates need to be applied
afterward. Applications seldom go bad & the files that do go bad aren't
changed/fixed/removed by reinstalling, so at best it's a waste of time.

Short answer to your specific concern: No, any reinstallation will not cause
you to lose any user-created documents regardless of which app you created
them with. However, it's best to do a removal of the currently installed
software first using the Remove Office utility supplied with Office 2008.
You'll find guidelines here:

New/old problem with Powerpoint in Update 2

> This is the kind of attack message that does more damage than good. The people monitoring this forum are volunteers, not MS employees. If you want to scream at MS, do it at them and not the people who are trying to help us.

I would hardly characterize robor's message as an attack. And, it was not directed to the volunteers here, but rather directly to Mr. Montenegro, whose signature says "Macintosh Business Unit, Microsoft Corporation." Is he a volunteer, too?

The statement to the right of where I am typing this says, "The MVPs and other volunteers here welcome not only questions but comments, feedback, and criticism." If disgruntled users don't "scream" here, where should we.

While I have received a message from Mr. Montenegro that Microsoft has identified what they think is the problem with my un-openable file--that it is missing some bit of code that causes SP2 to reject it (deficiency I had nothing to do with)--I have yet to see a public statement from Microsoft that they acknowledge the problem, are working on it and will have a fix by a specific time.

This whole philosophical argument about whose responsibility it is to ensure that a product works as advertised is ridiculous. The current problem is not a minor bug; it is a crippler that Microsoft does not offer a clear, simple path by which to recover. That is irresponsible.
