allowed,

Resent unfortunuately has no impact in this situation, I think the position
comes down to the fact that you are expected to obtain the course content
manuals by legal methods (approx 200 ea alone I believe for GBP) or obtain
manuals by attending the full course at something like 700 a time, or
perhaps like I suggested you might be able to sneak peak or temporarily
borrow from any colleague you have with the manuals?
This is in fact what I have done, this is different as they happen to be
held at our consultancy. I am not deliberately going out of my way to obtain
something I should not have access to or breach copyright to be fair. Not
being judgemental, but I don't think this Microsoft monitored group is
necessarily the best platform for such a request.

Given how hard they are to obtain and costly, and given the DMF section is a
substantial part of the guide not to mention covered by MS copyright, I can
only commiserate that you cannot get hold of the manuals by another means -
but I can't imagine anyone will publically offer to help in this respect. MS
have to cover their costs which is another aspect to why it might seem
expensive, but it really isn't when you appreciate they have subsidised a
lot of the courses and content.

Think of it that the manuals are only something like only 3 times more than
the cost for you taking the exams, so if you were to fail the exams three
times that would have afforded you an official pair of manuals for the
install & config course.

No, I simply wanted to resize the windows that was

Curious Email behavior

Posted: 26 Aug 2004 07:25 AM PDT

In addition, you do need to set the CRMEmail advanced attribute for the user
that wants inbound email routed into CRM. This step is the same as setting up a
Queue email user. (Just don't "disable" the user :-) )

CRM,

It uses the Email Router in CRM against your email server, and recognises
the GUID identifier hidden away far into the email title.
This is completely standard functionality.

If you also want to avoid converting ALL emails into CRM that pass through
the router by the way, you
have to check your personal options within CRM so it only actions against
emails about CRM records.

If the email has originated from CRM then any reply to the CRM user should
get created in CRM, as default behaviour.

The question relating to queues is unrelated to the main question you had,
but yes its setup correctly and should be disabled.

SFO synch questions

Posted: 26 Aug 2004 03:49 AM PDT

And the updates that are "played back" do not take into acount "when" the change
was made. Assume the following timeline of 2 users who are both Offline:

- User A changes a phone number on an Account
- User B changes the same phone number
- User B goes back online
- User A goes back online

In this case, it is User A's change that is kept as that was the last update
applied. It isn't standard SQL replication that has conflict resolution in it.

My understanding is as follows

When SFO syncronises with the CRM server it uses a method called 'playback'
to write changes only back to the CRM server. It syncronises at a field
level for only the modified records

The current issue with sync will only affect a record if the same field on
the same record is updated while the client is offline, as you already sound
aware of the issue, you should know that the client will always win in this
instance, but in the instance you're talking about by which different fields
on the same record are updated there should be no issue.

Jscript window opener

Posted: 26 Aug 2004 01:49 AM PDT

Hi Aaron,

Yes, I was using a button created in the ISV.config to
open a new window.

But I am still unable to get the crmForm value even with
WinMode=0, which is the default value.

Is there any other setting than WinMode that I have to
set?

My ISV.config line looks like this:
<Button Title="Print" Icon="whatever"
Url="http://crmserver/printreport.html" WinMode="0"/>

The printreport.html contains the jscript that uses the
window.opener to get the invoicenumber.

The jscript should be ok as it runs fine when activated
from a picklist in the Invoice Page.

Thanks for the input.

Question On Fields

Posted: 25 Aug 2004 03:39 PM PDT

I can only guess that the reason they provide 2 different options is to give you
a choice. Not everyone will use SIC codes and they may want a differnt list of
"industries" then what is provided. This way, they can use the Industry field
as they want to without "changing" what is considered a standard list.

If you don't need the INdustry field, then you should remove the one you don't
need via the form customizations.

Standardly we would use only the SIC code. So still a

Posted: 25 Aug 2004 02:48 PM PDT

There are a number of different ways to install the various components. The IG
is just that, a guide. There are many places that run AD & Exchange on the same
machine. If the client is concerned about AD crashing if Exchange goes down,
then they aren't going to be happy with a SBS installation either.

Bottom line is the client needs ot determine what's more important to them:
stability or price. if they want the stability, they are going to have to shell
out more money for additional servers.

Thanks Alex.

This is very disappointing news. We encounter many
companies who have conservative controls over the upgrade
of their systems and are very slow to move off their NT
servers and subsequently still have many groups of NT
workstation clients.

The Implementation Guide covers the issues regarding co-
existence of Win 2K and NT in considerable detail - it
should be expected that some customers with NT servers
will still have NT workstations.

Are there ANY known instances of the unsupported running
of the CRM browser on NT workstation?

How to get Word to stop inserting guillemets

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 09:14 PM PST

All of a sudden, when I hit Shft+" (quotation mark), in Word, I get the guillemets--those sideways double arrows. I'm pretty sure I just did something on my keyboard to trigger this, b/c a few minutes before I first noticed this, I hit some keys that took the cursor off the doc I was typing in, so I had to click to get back into the document.

My only keyboard languages are English and Greek, and the characters are definitely the Roman alphabet, so I'm not using the Greek keyboard. What do I do now?

microsoft, please buy EndNote (the company), intrgrate it to word, especially the RT version that doesn't allow macros

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 05:30 PM PST

Surface RT / 2 can't use macros in Word.
Endnote is needed for academics.

The only solution (without allowing a desktop plugin / macros on ARM versions of windows) is for Microsoft to buy endnote the company and integrate the reference manger in to word without using macros. Then make sure it works with office RT.

Does anyone else have any better ideas?

How are tablets with ARM processors supposed to take off in academics without reference managers like EndNote working??

The only other major things preventing this tablets adoption in academics is better mechanical stylus recognition in one note and one note not allowing audio recording at the same time as note taking for syncing notes.

Please pass this up the ladder as it is obviously upper end decisions that will decide these major changes.

For Outlook, create a new mail profile under Control Panl->Mail

my comments.

Not recommended since as soon as a upgrade to 2.6.x is due, the raid and
data are lost and it has to be rebuilt. The big advantage of linux software
raid is it's portability and independency (of a distinct controller). Also,
with linux mdadm software raid it's possible to have raid1, raid5 and raid0
partitions on the same set of disks.
As an example, consider a triple-disk arrangement with /boot or root
partition as raid1 (+1 spare), /usr and /home as raid5 and a big /tmp for
video ripping as raid0.

Task Definitions

Posted: 22 Feb 2005 06:01 AM PST

A couple of things to know about.

First of all, note the basic equation Project always follows W=U*D, Work
equals Units times Duration. This is always - always - going to be true.
32 man-hours Work = 32 hours Duration * 100% Units or it could also be 64
hours Duration * 50% Units or some other combination.

Second, if you assign 2 resources to a task at 30% and 70% respectively, it
does NOT mean that they are splitting the work 30/70. 30% means that 30% of
the time the resource is spending on the task is converted to useful work.
If the task duration was 3 days, 24 hours, and you assign a resource to it
at 30%, his attention is divided between the task at hand and other things
and so he will do 8 man-hours of work on this particular task over a three
day period. In other words, he will get done in 3 days what he COULD have
done in 1 day if he didn't have any distractions.

Third, the task type determines what happens when you EDIT resource
assignments that have already been made. I have Joe assigned 100% to a task
that takes 5 days, 40 hours. Becuase he's assigned 100%, the work he's
producing is also 40 man-hours. But never ever forget that hours of work
and hours of duration are two completely different, albeit related,
critters. I now edit his assignment, changing the Units to 50%. I could be
doing that for a couple of reasons. One is that it is really a 20 man-hour
task but I don't need it done any sooner than Friday so I'll let him work on
it at his leisure over the 5 days duration. Makes the task Fixed Duration,
change the assignment, and Project recalculates Work. Or it could be that
this task really does require 40 man-hours of work but I have some other
priorities and prefer Joe to work 4 hours a day on this task and 4 hours a
day on something else. I make the task Fixed Work, edit the assignment, and
Project recalculates the Duration to be 10 days - it'll take him longer to
get the work done but my other priorities dictate I'll just have to live
with it.

So to your example. Before going further the first question to ask is what
do you mean by it being a 32 hour task, if it's work how do you KNOW it's a
32 man-hour task and where did you enter that fact into Project? When you
want to split the work between the two resources do you want one guy to work
on it for a while and then the other take over or do you want them to work
together until the first guy finishes his part of the work and then the
other works on alone or do you want the 70% guy to work full speed while the
other works part of each day along with him, or just what are you looking
for in the schedule? It's possible to do all of those things but you have
to decide first where you want to end up. In other words, 32 man-hours
split 70/30 isn't enough information to set up the scenario.

Hi,

You are looking at a resource pool, not the project file.

How do I convert Microsoft Project Gantt chart to .pdf format?

Hi,

The wizard is a 2003 feature.
It is not very useful since clicking the camera icon does about the same.

Modifying RBS in Project Prof 2003 Global Template.

Posted: 21 Feb 2005 11:25 AM PST

Mark --

You may need to set new values for some or all the resources in the
Enterprise Resource Pool. Each project should be reopened and published.
The next time the OLAP cube rebuilds, the new values in the RBS field will
be reflected in any Portfolio Analyzer views you have created. Just some
thoughts. Hope this helps.

Resouce Names in Alphabetical Order

Hi Carrie,

1. View Resource sheet; Project, Sort, Sortby... Name and check ON
"Permanently renumber resources"

2. Not very important I'm afraid. There is a grouping option "By resource
group" but for everything else it is not more important than f.i. Text1

Migration of EPM from Server to Server

Posted: 21 Feb 2005 06:29 AM PST

Mark --

One approach would be to back up the test database and then restore it to
your production database. This way, you would retain your Enterprise Global
(including all enterprise Fields, Views, Tables, Filters, Groups, Reports,
etc.), your Enterprise Resource Pool, the RBS, and all Project Server
settings. I will invite others to comment as well. Hope this helps.

Automatically update projects when their base template changes

Posted: 20 Feb 2005 12:49 PM PST

When you build a project file from a template all it does is make a copy of
the template and change the extension. There is no persistent link
remaining after the new file is created. Sorry, you're going to have to
edit the subprojects by hand individually.

Thanks for the information. I still have a small problem now. I have done all
that was mentioned in the knowledge base on editing the registry and adding
the workgroup key. But the link to workgroup is not displayed in project or
for that matter theres no additional link that is visible after editing. is
there something else that i am missing out other than editing the registry
and installing the add in. Thanks

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :-)

Search Help for Glossary and there is an option to Print. I've never done
this so I don't know if it prints just the page you're viewing or the whole
thing!

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at

Monday to Friday default working hours?

Pretty much to make your life easier, you should make all of your calendar
changes to the "change working time" dialog. Remember, there are possibly 3
calendars that can affect the scheduling of your task, the task calendar if
you give it a specific one (if not it defaults to the standard calendar), a
resource calendar if you have resources assigned to your task, and the
project calendar.
