Thanks. It is interesting that /etc, /lib, /sbin, etc. are in this hda1 partition. It appears that /lib/modules is
my biggest hog (2.6.14-2-k7 Kernel modules) according to my cleaned up list result:

9489 /etc
3057 /bin
169 /boot/grub
3158 /boot
90 /dev
50568 /lib/modules (2.6.14-2-k7 Kernel)
60977 /lib
3 /mnt
0 /proc
8127 /root
4024 /sbin
0 /sys
1 /srv
1 /opt

Changing Variables Via Webmin

Changing your domain name while running an X session can create....
adventures. Look at your /setc/sysconfig files and look for the domain name,
and look in /etc/resolv.conf for your DNS settings. There are sometimes
other tools for this, such as system-config-network under RedHat and Fedora
Core.

Since it appears that you are using Google to post to Usenet, you

Do read the links at the bottom the the above webpage.

I suggest checking if your ISP has a Usenet News server. If so,
you need to use it with a usenet complient reader instead of using
google to post usenet questions.

You create the kill script, launch the script to kill and verify the
kill script can find the other script and can kill it.
It is good practice to set the shell and PATH at the top of the
scripts which run in cron.
Lots of script examples can be found in /etc/init.d

Once both scripts run, then you put them in cron, set a small time and
test. If works then change the runtimes to production values.

Now, if you were to do a
man man
to learn about the manual subsystem you would find you can do a
man -k cron
to get some manual pages for reading

Examples:
man 1 crontab
man 5 crontab
man cron

I'll suggest you might want to read
man pkill
man kill
man pgrep
man grep

Look at your ${PATH} variable, like this:

$ echo ${PATH}

It will probably show that "/usr/local/bin" is listed BEFORE the
"/usr/bin" system files. This is a terrible security hole and just
wrong, wrong, wrong. Looks like your sysadmin screwed up. Shoot
him. Better yet, send him to a sysadmin class.

Then look to your shell start-up scripts ( "~/.bashrc" and the like)
as well as the system-wide settings in "/etc/profile.d". Find and
fix the file that puts local, customized directories (such as
"/usr/local/bin" and "~/bin") BEFORE the distribution's system
directories like "/usr/bin".

Something wreaked havoc with my file permissions...

Posted: 12 Jun 2006 08:40 PM PDT

After reading a bit on the topic on usenet, I opted for reinstalling
the system. Luckily, I found an old image of this system from
last year, so I didn't have to do the whole process from scratch.

My mistake. A while ago, late at night, I was playing with permissions
in
my /mnt directory under the assumption that the system was mounted and
that I was operating from an alternative installation... It was not...
So the new permissions automatically extended to the subsystem in
question,
which at the time was mounted in the /mnt directory...
Big, big mistake, and a lesson that will stay with me for good.

You can get it: use a "wget -c" operation on your local FTP mirror.

Extracting and tarballing and compressing them somewhere else won't help you
much: they're compressed in the RPM, and the RPM is almost entirely made of
the fonts, so you'll have nearly 20 MB to transfer some other way.

Is your particular Mandriva using a 2.6 kernel? That apparently makes a big
difference.

But that stripping process to get it on a floppy or two takes serious work
these days: it's gotten much easier to simply include the kitchen sink kand
not worry about floppy boots, especially as cheap new desktops don't even
bother to include a floppy these days.

I could load ipw2200 driver manually by increasing the default
timeout value first.

You could try it with the "Gparted Live Cd"....
Worked fine for me.

I can answer for linux-kernel, as that is one of my interests:

The deltree box holds source code, distro mirror, and so on. Lots
of disk space as that is very cheap these days...

[1] 79% free, for slackware-10.2 on a 5GB partition, why I need
more space than 5GB?
