determine ip of msg in SMTP queue of 2003? Posted: 18 May 2007 09:30 AM PDT NDRs that look like spam are a result of spammers spoofing SMTP headers - addresses from your domain are used in From, Mail From, or Return-Path headers. If the original recipient's mail system cannot deliver the message - perhaps because the recipient does not exist - you end up getting the NDRs. There's not much you can do to stop header spoofing - SMTP (the protocol) makes it easy for spammers to do that. What you can do to protect from reverse NDRs / backscatter: 1. Publish SPF records in external DNS zone(s): This provides some protection by explicitly designating authorized hosts that can send mail for your domain. 2. If the NDRs are for recipients that do not exist in your domain, implement Recipient Filtering - drop mail for recipients that do not exist in your directory (you haven't mentioned the version of Exchange you're on - generally a good idea to provide such details when posting). If you Exchange Server 2003 - 1) In Global Settings | Message Delivery | Properties | Recipient Filtering and 2) Enable Recipient Filtering in SMTP Virtual Server properties | General tab | Advanced | Edit | check Recipient Filter. Note: Recommend implementing SMTP tarpitting if you're using Recipient Filtering. Provides some protection from address harvesting attacks. SMTP tar pit feature for Microsoft Windows Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842851 3) This still leaves NDRs that are received by valid internal recipients. Third-party tools like GFI Mail Essentials (http://www.gfi.com/mes/mesfeatures.htm) have features that protect from "fake" NDRs (and so do MTAs like Postfix (http://www.postfix.org/BACKSCATTER_README.html). -- Bharat Suneja MVP - Exchange www.zenprise.com NEW blog location: exchangepedia.com/blog ---------------------------------------------- "Les Caudle" <nospam> wrote in message news:com... |

Still integrated with Active Directory, but recipient management taken away from ADUC and moved to Exchange (console and shell). This has several benefits, including elimination of RUS and all the support issues it brought, immediate provisioning of recipients (no waiting), etc. Exchange configuration information is still stored in AD (well, most of it), and recipients are still AD objects. Or you can create new accounts and mailbox-enable them in a single step from Exchange console/shell. Performance issue with MAPI Cache transaction management Posted: 15 May 2007 10:36 AM PDT I am not actually passing the messages through Exchange but simply using the MAPI components of exchange to open the .PST file under a MAPI profile. The 3rd party product I am using to preform the conversion is called Aid4mail which as I understand it sends commands to the Exchange compenents to preform the conversion. The bottleneck is not with aid4mail though but with some sort of buffer or cache within in exchange used by aid4mail. there has to be a way to identify and modify that buffer overrun somehow but I cannot figure out how. Posted: 15 May 2007 09:35 AM PDT Chet, Do you have a specific need to defrag? I found through talking to others (after my own trial and error) that defrag isn't really needed on 2003 and up (maybe 2000 also). My personal experience was that the stores would grow to a specific size and then become stable. Defragging shrunk them, but within a week they were back to the stable size. Exchange will reuse empty pages, if you defrag then Exchange needs to create new ones which actually could reduce performance. So if you are not running low on disk space, or need room for backups, you may consider leaving it alone... Steve "Chet" <microsoft.com> wrote in message news:com... |

Please install the following hotfix: For IIS 5.0 FIX: You experience various problems when you use the Password Change pages in IIS 5.0 http://support.microsoft.com/?id=831047 For IIS 6.0 833734 FIX: You experience various problems when you use the Password Change pages in IIS 6.0 http://support.microsoft.com/?id=833734 2. Please ensure your domain password policy is correct apply on the roaming user accounts: Please log on the roaming user accounts on local computer client. If you get the password expire prompt when log on domain, the policy is correct apply on the account. If you still do not get the prompt, you have to check your Group Policy on DC. 3. This problem occurs when the accounts that are associated with your Exchange mailboxes have been disabled, and the accounts in a different Microsoft Windows 2000 domain have been associated with the mailboxes. A one-way trust exists from the Windows 2000 domain to the domain that contains the mailboxes. This one-way trust prevents queries to the Active Directory directory service from the domain that contains the Exchange mailboxes, and prevents password-related information from being retrieved and passed on to the user. To work around this problem, establish a two-way trust between the domains. For additional information about trust relationships, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 310996 Active Directory Services and Windows 2000 domains (Part 1) http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310996 For more info: Users Are Not Prompted to Change Password in OWA http://support.microsoft.com/?id=322264 Note: it is also fit for Windows 2003 domain.
