can highlight colors be adjusted in Word 2003?

I'm working on converting a massive document from WordPerfect to Word.  Certain sections are highlighted in pale yellow, pale green and pale blue.  The highlight color selection in Word 2003 isn't comparable (the only light blue available is turquoise, which prints so dark one can barely read he black text.

 

Is there a way to adjust the 15 highlight colors?

 

Alternately, my office is thinking of upgrading to MS Office 2013...are the options any different for highlighting with 2013?

Replacing text in different case

Hi Guys

I'm working on a document in Word 2013, where I want to replace an abbreviation (typed in upper case) that appears many times with the full phrase (in lower case). The problem is when I hit replace the full phrase appears in upper case! I don't recall having this problem in Office 2007 or before. Is there something I should turn on or off so I can replace in lower case?

In document from template, Quick Parts>Field for Document Title, not updating

I have created a Document Template in Word 2010, and from the Quick Parts>Field menu I added several Fields that should contain the Document Title.

In the Template, all Title fields I added were showing the correct title that I added in Document Properties, "Go to File>Properties>Show Document Panel & fill in the Title".

However, when I created a new Document from this Template and changed the Title in the Document Properties panel, none of the Title fields I added updated and still say the message "Go to File>Properties>Show Document Panel & fill in the Title".

Am I missing a step here? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Why I cannot post any word 2010 into my college blog. It always give me the option to save it ..always save it. And when I send this document to other students they never can open my word docx.  I need just to tell me how to fix it. I need just a simple .doc intead of .docx extension . Thank you

Customizing (Normal.docx and Building Blocks)

I spent the time customizing my Microsoft Word 2010 software for the group by storing styles, building blocks, etc. that are specific to our company and have deleted the Microsoft Built-in Building Blocks.  I stored all this customization in my normal.dotm, normal.docx and building blocks.docx files. I am ready to push out to the group but have come across an issue. I have done a trial with someone in the group and have emailed them the three templated documents to replace on their hard drive. When we did this that person does see what I have customized but also still sees the built-in default Microsoft stuff that I have deleted. What is the best way to resolve this issue?

Old word docs unreadable

I have saved a load of old word documents from an old laptop to an external drive. It seems now that when I plug in the drive to my new vaio with windows 8 and office 365, I can't open them. They appear as OOBE.Document. How can I open these and work on them again?

Office 2003 on XP SP3.

I'm not sure how to describe this situation but I'm copying and pasting text from a PDF to Word and need to save it as a .txt file.  The line is wrapped so it doesn't go the full width of the screen.  I'm doing this to copy to an ereader (ebook reader) and can't have truncated lines everywhere.  Is there away of deleting all that wrapping in the document?  Under Tools, Options there is a Wrap to Window option which is unchecked.  What else can I do?


 For those of you struggling with reading PDF's on ereaders, converting them to .txt files really works.  You can't convert images, tables and other fancy stuff of course but the text is a dream to work with resulting in faster page turns and easy control over font style and most importantly SIZE.  Just copy and the text (use the Select Tool with Foxit) and paste to a document in Word that you save as a .txt file.  The file size is dramatically reduced as well.

Paragraph borders & shadowed text

When I both put a border around a paragraph AND shadow some of the text in the paragraph, the border doesn't print on those lines with text formatted as having the font shadowed (prints OK on all other lines), even though the entire paragraph appears bordered in print-preview. Any ideas what's going on? Thanks!

A user said that when she updated the cross-referencing in a document, a little "book with a pen writing on it' showed up at the bottom of the screen when she did this.  After her boss removed some of the cross references, she updated and the book showed up with a red 'x' on it.  I've never even noticed the book.  What is it and what did the red 'x' signify?

Word, how can I allow other users? On administrator, Word says other users are allowed, but when I sign on as another user, Word is not available.

I have Windows XP on a 5 year old Toshiba laptop.  I've had Word 2007 for years.  I now want to make Word available to a different user.  As the "administrator", I give permission for the other user.  But when I sign on as the other user (I've tried it with 2 different user names), there is no sign of Word, and apparently no way to get it.  

Hyperlink URL text to a local document

Hello,

I am looking to hyperlink a citation that begins with a URL (e.g., "http://www.census.gov/ - Median Household Income.") to a file saved in my local folder. Currently, if I select the text and hyperlink to the document, the physical text shown in the citation will change. For example, if I have the citation "http://www.census.gov/ - Median Household Income." and I hyperlink it to a document entitled "Median Household Income," the text shown in the citation will change to "Median Household Income.xlsx." 

This does not occur if I change the order of the citation. That is, if I have the citation "Median Household Income - http://www.census.gov/" then I can select the entire text of the citation and hyperlink it to the "Median Household Income" Excel file, and I am left with the citation text as originally entered as well as a hyperlink that takes me to my Excel document. So, this leads me to believe it has to do with the fact the URL is listed first in the citation. Obviously if I could just change the order then I wouldn't have brought this to the forum, but it is important I list the URL first in my citation.

How to add page numbers to a book made in word 2012

Hello everybody,
     I have just created my project book in word 2010. It has
1. A title page
2. A certificate page
3. List of Contents
4. chapter wise written code like chapter 1 --Introduction, some 20 pages,a blank page, then chapter 2 some 30 pages,a blank page, .....

What I want is how to start page numbering at chapter 1 without numbering the blank pages and continue the numbers till conclusion, i.e., last page.

I think I made my problem clear in some way. Please help me achieve this. Thanks in advance.

How to do a Pass/Fail check in Word field?

I have a table in Word 2010.  Cell B7 has a product formula.  B8 has a product formula.  I want B9 to say "pass" if B8>B7 or "fail" otherwise. 

I have tried {IF B8>B7 "true" "false"}, but it does not evaluate the expression.  It just gives me "true" no matter what.

I have tried {=IF(B8>B7,1,0)}, which gives me the correct evaluation, but only outputs the numbers.

I have tried {=IF(B8>B7,true,false)}, which outputs 1 or zero, just as above

I have tried {=IF(B8>B7,"True","False")}, which throws a syntax error

I have tried {IF(B2<B1,"true","false") }, which yields a blank cell

Is there a way to pull this off?  I would not be opposed to having the pass/fail test done in the text outside of the table if I must.

I'd be mighty appreciative if someone could chime in with the magic formulation.  I can't believe this is beyond the capabilities of Word.

Hi all, I've been getting this message in Word 2013 for at least the last 24 hours and off and on ever since I upgraded.

 

If I use the Define command in the context menu, I get an IE error page that tells me navigation was canceled. When I refresh this page, I get a page about the security certificate being invalid. If I choose to continue on to the site, the m-w.com environment does appear, but closing out of the app and using Define again takes me back to the start.

 

As a writer I've long relied on Word's integrated dictionary. I didn't complain when it went away. I didn't even complain when my best choice going forward was Merriam-Webster. But if we're not going to have an integrated dictionary anymore, the app substitute really ought to work, don't you think? The longer it doesn't, the more time I spend at oxforddictionaries.com.

Printing sections of a document

I have a word document with numerous sections from which from time to time I need to print specific sections only. Is there an easy way to identify the section number I need  to print from and to rather than having to count the section breaks from the start of the document, I thought it may be easier to use print selection but that omits the page numbers in the footer.

I went back into MS Works Word Processor and found the
article by typing "mail merge." As I reread the
instructions, I realized the Help meant to check Tools in
the Word Processor, not the Database. DUH! I am humbled

Windows XP is the operating system. It does NOT include Office, Works or other
applications.

If you want Office, you need to buy Office. There is an Office XP but it's not related to
Windows XP other than that's one of the versions of Windows that it will run on (Office XP
runs on Win98 or newer.). The latest version of Office is Office 2003.

If you just need Word (not Excel, Outlook, etc.), you can get the Works SUITE which
includes Word. The regular Works does not include Word.

Some PCs comes with Works and/or Office installed. But that was a decision of the PC
manufacturer. They are not part of Windows.

Hi Amber,

This is a problem were the sender has to know what program the receiver is
going to use when opening an attachment. Not all programs open other
program files.

Or, receiver has not installed converter that opens other program files.

For instance, on the menu bar of Works Word processor click File, then click
Save As, click the down arrow for Save as type. Notice the various
extensions for different programs.

I find most if not all Word processor programs can open a file with .rtf
(Rich Text Format) extension. You might try saving your document with .rtf
extension, then attach that file to the email.

The problem is: the program that extracts the data from the wdb file to
make a mdb file cannot read the results of formulas, nor the formatting
of numerical data. If MS had chosen to extract the data into a csv file
(the program for this is in MSWorks already) all would have been well.

If you use a flat file like Works does, you could download
openoffice.org from www.openoffice.org and use the spreadsheet for your
data. These can be merged into its wordprocessor without loss of formatting.

Well I'm afraid that taps out my ideas here. You might try sending some
email to Works support and having a conversation with them. There is
probably something unique about your setup that is causing this, and they
can probably work through the details with you.

to re-run LILO, copy the boot sector to floppy (or where ever), reboot to
Windows, copy the boot sector to the Windows partition and reboot again if
you want to go back to Linux.

Of course that assumes you want NTFS partitions for Windows. The only reason
I can think of for using FAT32 is so Linux can read and write to the
partition. It's better to use NTFS and just have a small FAT32 partition
just for data shared between Windows and Linux.

Yeah, I've been surfing on linux-laptop.net/tuxmobil.org the last few
days. These are my experiences:

* There is one report in english/german (there is two additional ones
in spanish (one for the 1353XC), but unfortunately I don't read
spanish although I did try babelfish on a sentencer here and there :))
from a person who has the same computer model as I (Acer 1353 LC). The
writer says:
"The VIA KM/KN400 is supported by the vesa driver of XFree86 4.x. In
XFree86 4.4 the via driver fully support this chip."
This would mean that I need XFree86 4.4 to be able to use the via
driver (and get accelerated graphics), right?

* By following a link from one of the spanish reports (I can read
those!) I ended up at http://unichrome.sourceforge.net/. A bit down on
that page there's a link called "Build" where it says:
"Contains various documentation and scripts useful for building
unichrome code for various distributions. This is currently limited to
the debian xfree86-4.3.0 branch."
This is the dist. and the XF86-version I'm running. So I looked at the
README you get to if you follow the "Build"-link. There it says:
"The xfree86 via driver works quite well on xfree86 4.3, so it is no
problem
dragging it into this and loading it for xfree86 4.3."
This sounds optimistic, saying that I can use 4.3 (since 4.4 isn't
supported by debian and won't be so, since they've chosen to go with
x.org). However, it still seems like I have to rebuild from source
(which will probably just get me into trouble), and then build the
driver separately. There are some source files along with an
"Imake"-file to get by downloading the "unichrome-X-r20.tar.gz" from
the project's file section. I guess this is the source for the driver.
However, I don't know what to do with the Imake-file.
There is a "Unichrome Mini-Howto" at

But if you scroll down to "Checking out and installing the via driver"
in the Mini-Howto, it says:
"Make sure you have a build tree of XFree 4.4 or later, which has been
built once so all object files etc. are there. "
So, now I suddenly need 4.4?

* I could just download
http://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers/video/KN_KM400/km400xf40039.zip,
(which I did), but as I wrote in my first msg, this easy-to-use
solution that (from what I understand) just includes running the
vinstall-stuff and making a minor change in XF86Config, only supports
Mandrake, Red Hat, SuSE and Fedora. So for this to work, I need to
know differences between different distributions or I'm bound to screw
things up :)

* On http://flaez.ch/dab/aspire_1315lm.html, there's some good info
for the 1315LM (which seem to have the same graphics as my 1353LC). I
tried downloading the "xf43sav-27t.tgz" from
http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html#download, and just copying the
one and only file that comes with the package, savage_drv.o to the
directory /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers, as described on the
probo-page. I then put these lines in the Device-section in
XF86Config-4:
Driver "savage"
Option "DPMS"
Option "XaaNoMono8x8PatternFillRect"
Option "UseBIOS" "no"
as described on the flaez.ch-page. However, after these changes, I got
the error message when trying to run startx from the prompt saying "no
screens found".

So, I don't really know what to do. There are several paths that can
be taken, none without problems (big problems for a beginner) ;)
I've spent quite a few hours on this already, but it means so much to
have accelerated graphics. The alternative is changing distribution or
going back to fulltime winxp, but I really like my debian system and
most of things work pretty good now, except graphics acceleration.
Any suggestion(s)?

Hi,

Your first port of call should http://www.microsoft.com/exchange, on there
you'll find the system requirements for Exchange 2003. There are also
documents and links on there which will you point you towards sizing
guidelines.

Did you see my reply to your identical post (subject: "just can't seem to
get started") in m.p.exchange.clients? My answer was pretty much identical
to Mark's.

I have been using a header called Motion for all of my documents in Office Word 2007.  When I came back to the work I was doing this afternoon both the Odd and Even versions of that header have disappeared from the Building Block Organizer.  Does anyone know how I can get that header back?  It's the only one I actually use as it's a fairly basic one.  If I knew how to get a picture in here I could show you what the header should look like.

I have a HP Pavilion a6500f running Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit.

how to create C5 envelope

I use a C5 envelope, a size that is apparently unknown to Word but one that I have successfully defined to my Canon MG5350 printer. It may not be a standard US size, but it is definitely a European standard, designed to take an A5 sheet without folding.

In all versions of Word that I have ever used I have never found a way to define an envelope of the corresponding name,  size and orientation. Can anyone help?

Is it possible to set the MSO Word ruler to measure in centimeters instead of inches?

I'm working on a design for a label and the agency wants the artwork to a certain specification in centimeters. Word traditionally shows a ruler measuring in inches. Is there any way I can change that?

Label printing not aligned

When I try to print address labels in Microsoft Word, the lines do not line up at the left side.  The second line is indented below the first line and the third line is in front of the first two lines.In other words the lines are neither aligned to the left nor centered nor aligned to the right.

I had to restore my pc to an earlier time and now my word starter and excel starter won't open my files. It says to fix with control panel, but troubleshoot doesn't help.

Hi all,

I'm on Word 2013 Professional for Windows 8 64 bit. 

I was enjoying the Merriam-Webster app but it has suddenly caught a little bug. When I click Define to open up the M-W definition in the right side bar, I get a message that says "Navigation to the webpage was cancelled. What you can try: Refresh the page." 

After clicking "Refresh the page," I get an alert that says the following:

There is a problem with this website's security certificate.
 
The security certificate presented by this website has expired or is not yet valid.

Security certificate problems may indicate an attempt to fool you or intercept any data you send to the server.

    Sorry about the big text I just pasted that in. I think it might be a McAfee alert? (I'm on a Dell and McAfee came installed, but if so, why is it suddenly acting up? I don't believe I've changed any settings and it was working before). 


    Anyway, if I click ok to give permission and access the page, it then takes me there, but it's a little annoying to have to do this every time. Any ideas how to avoid this alert? If it's a McAfee problem maybe I can white list the page somehow? Or is this a Word issue?

    In Word 2013/Office 365, when I turn on track changes or perform a file compare, the highlight on the left side does appear, but the actual changes are not marked. There are no underlines or strikethroughs. I have tried changing the colors for these from "By Author" to specific colors, but this had no effect.

     

    Worked fine in Word 2010. I've not yet removed Word 2010 from this computer and it still works fine there.

     

    This seems like a bug, because I experienced this within a day of installing Office 365 and had not made any changes or customizations. On the other hand, I've searched and not found any other reports of this problem. Surely, other people are using Word's Track Changes or file compare features.

     

    Any suggestions? Anything I should try or test?

    When printing circle labels from an Avery Template, Word 2007 is printing blank pages.  In print preview I can see the words/pictures, but when it's printed it's blank.  I just printed regular shipping labels from another Avery Template and they printed fine.  But this template for some reason is printing blank pages.  When I print preview it, I can see the image/words.  When I create a PDF from Word's PDF creator, I can see it, yet it's all messed up.  BUT when I print to my other PDF creator on my computer, it creates a blank PDF.  Any suggestions?  I've tried a bunch of things already that I've read on here, but nothing's worked.

    I turned my computer on, it slowed down to a crawl almost so I did the Last Known good configuration, deleted my profile and created a new one, ran Checkdisk then Disk Defragmenter and it still installs very slowly. I might have to try another cd but I'll try it on another computer first.

    James, perhaps we can help each other.
    I believe in Office XP you can reinstall the office tools - I think they are in a seperate folder on the CD. Try reinstalling them - I think the folder name is add-ins or tools.
