Note that / is kind-of small. Mine is about 2G, with a lot of stuff (/usr,
/opt, ...) in their own partitions. Not shown are four 18G SCSI hard
drives that are not mounted; each has a 1G swap partition and the rest
used raw.

But, while / of the O.P. is over half full, with /usr elsewhere, it is not
all that likely to grow unless he installs a lot of new applications there.

Thanks for replying. After applying the 'patch', it works for me.

But one problem: now the Update notices me that my kernel needs to
update. Can I update without having the same problem?

Q. re. dual-boot of 2 Linux OS's - esp. re. LILO

Posted: 11 Nov 2004 02:38 AM PST

One LILO installation will boot either system.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
boot=/dev/hda # use mbr for boot sector
prompt
timeout=50 # 5 second timeout
read-only # applies to all images

image=/boot/vmlinuz # Debian kernel
root=/dev/hda2
label=Debian
# initrd= ... # add if needed

image=/kop/boot/vmlinuz # Koppix kernel
root=/dev/hda3
label=Koppix
# initrd= ... # add if needed

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This config file should give you two options for booting. When you install
this boot loader by running /sbin/lilo, the "/kop" filesystem will have to be
mounted in order to map the Koppix kernel.

You're probably not using rlogin, you're using SSH. And the default behavior
of SSH has changed, it no longer forwards X sessions by default.

Try using "ssh -X user@remote-machine" and see if it works.

Why are you using xhost? You should be using SSH or OpenSSH, with the -X
option to forward your X connection.

the SCSI initialisation / device discovery happens well
before swap space is added (here anyway - that's with a 29160 and a 2940UW

what happens if you force the interrupt for the slot which one of
the boards is in?

Also, IIRC some of the PCI slots on this motherboard are shared (which
made it interesting trying to get the card order right as I'm using all
the slots). Again, shifting slots around might help.

Because the second drive is to be used entirely for linux, you should be
able to get this working quickly and without extra complications due to
dual boot issues (partition table mismatches.)

Assuming you have an ide hard drive connected to a recent motherboard, go
into BIOS setup and specify LBA mode. The BIOS setup program on most PCs
allow for "autodetection" of the hard drives which are found and the
parmeters which are being used. You want autodect and LBA. If this is a
very old motherboard which has an "8G limit," then you might have more
problems.

Assuming the BIOS is set to autodetect and LBA, you can begin
your setup for linux. First, you might need to zero your partition
tables before beginning. BTW, your existing format under XP is no good
(one reason is that FAT32 is not a native linux partition type, and the
another is that your "drive geometry" is different.)

NOTICE: BE CAREFUL to SPECIFY the CORRECT DRIVE (this will destroy
your existing partition table on the specified drive)!

From a rescue CD (and substituting the correct letter for your
drive):
fdisk /dev/hdb
command (m for help): o
command (m for help): w

At this point, you should be able to begin your setup (from the setup CD.)

may want to check out mCatalog; it handles both DVDs and books, and
automatically looks up relevant info by hooking into Amazon (so all you
have to do is enter the ISBN number, and off you go).

Unfortunately, it has some pretty hefty requirements (it's a C# program,
so it relies on the Mono runtime environment; however, this *may* also
mean that it will function under Windows too ...).

Sadly, I can't comment on it beyond what the project page talks about,
as I can't get Mono to build on my 64-bit system yet (there's a 64-bit
capable version of Mono in CVS, but Mandrake hasn't gotten around to
packaging it yet! )-:). I've contemplated packaging it myself, but I'm
not that desperate for a media management solution. Yet ...

Yes, I know; I can just obtain a copy from CVS, compile and install it
myself. I happen to *like* using RPM to keep track of what's installed,
though. Gives me that warm, fuzzy feeling (yeaargh! Fuzzies!! Ye won't
be suckin' me dry!).

By "9.2" I assume you mean SuSE 9.2.

Most of the individual tools of Gnome are available from a KDE window
manager, and vice versa, unless you choose to only install one. Browsers,
video viewers and file managers and audio mixers, etc. are all distinct
tools built in both underlying environments.

This will, of course, completely screw up any active NFS mounts or X

Do this in single user mode, not on a network-live system!

Bootloader Issues

Posted: 08 Nov 2004 07:30 AM PST

I have now managed to rectify the problem by altering the grub.conf
and fstab configuration files and finally reinstalling GRUB.

The problem occurred with the image because the original installation
was

Device Type Size

Hard Drives
/dev/hda1 vfat 58275
/dev/hda2 Extended 59522
/dev/hda8 swap 2000
/dev/hda5 ext3 102
/dev/hda6 ext3 56400
/dev/hda7 swap 1020

where as the image was restored as

Device Type Size

Hard Drives
/dev/hda1 vfat 58275
/dev/hda2 Extended 59522
/dev/hda5 swap 2000
/dev/hda6 ext3 102
/dev/hda7 ext3 56400
/dev/hda8 swap 1020

Hence the grub.conf file was incorrectly setting the root as
(hd0,4)...
And the fstab was stating that the Swap partitions were at hda7 and
hda8!
I think I know why this occurred too.... But that's another story...

Lenard, thanks for pointing me to the fstab file...
