How do you know when Equation Editor has crashed?

Word fatally crashes a lot when using its Math Equation Editor.  But it can hang for a long time, 15 or 20 minutes sometimes, and still recover itself.  How do I know if the patient is sick or dead?  Generally, I've looked to Task Manager to tell me if it's working or not responding.  Not responding seems to be a good indication of death.  But I've left Word working (according to Task Manager) for many hours with no sign of a resolution.

Outlines and Numbering

I apologize if this has been answered as I have not found it.

I thought older versions of Word (now on 2010) were set up that if I had a multilevel numbering scheme applied to a document and worked in Outline mode the Outline Level and List level were directly linked.  That is if I added text and set the Outline Level to 1, it automatically assigned List level one.  If I demoted the text to Outline level 2, it automatically changed the list level to 2 also.

201 does not appear to work this way.  Am I incorrect in the way it worked or did it get changed?

Is there a way to make it work like this or do I have to set the Outline and List level separately?

How can I copy headers onto a new document

I want to copy pages 62-68 from an existing document from a new one, and retain the original header (showing title and page numbers 62-68.) When I do copy/paste, I get the text but not the headers. I can recreate the headers but I'd rather not, as this is something I need to do frequently.

MS Update does not show Service Package updates for Word 2007 on Windows 8.1 with x64

I have Office Word 2007 version (12.0.4518.1014) MSO (12.0.4518.1014) running on an HP Envy laptop with a 64 bit processor with Windows 8.1.  When I run Windows Update no updates come back, but it seems that none of the Service Packs are loaded for Word 2007 as the "SP#" designation is missing from my Word 2007 version number... I have an issue with spaces being deleted with several files being worked on between someone who just updated to Office 2010 and my 2007 version with track changes turned on.  The fix from what I have read is to run MS Update, but that does not seem to be working or able to fix my deleted spacing issue.  Where do I go from here?

E-mail and Save Command Buttons

I am working in Word 2007. I have created a 4 page template. The first page is instructions on how to complete the 3 pages. Each of the 3 pages pertains to a different level of employee access that is monitored by different departments.

 

What I would like to do, if possible, is create an e-mail button on each page (excluding the first page) that will e-mail just that page (not all 4 pages) to a group of people.

 

As a side note is it possible to create another command button to save one page out of a 4 page document?  For instance, if I needed to complete page 3 of this template can I just save page 3, which is only page that has information on it that I need to save.

Office 365 Word 2013 Stopped Working

Hi.

I've installed the Microsoft Office pack through my school (EaDania) and out of nowhere Word has stopped working. I've had it open today, but after closing it, it won't open again. I've tried opening it by pressing the icon and by opening documents - nothing, I've tried reparing the entire office pack - both kinds of repairs, I've tried repairing Word alone, and I've actually removed and re-installed the intire thing, but nothing is working.

When I press the icon now at first it askes me to allow the program to make changes on the computer (this has never happened before) and then it looks like it's starting up but after a few seconds an error box appeares and I'm asked if I want to repair or close and of course I say repair but nothing happens after pressing the button.

As you can hear I'm very confused. I do used Word a lot, so I hope you can help me. I don't know if it matters but just to let you know I'm using Wondows 8.

Word command "send to mail recipient" does not appear in all commands list

I wish to send a Word document within an email, not as an attachment. By searching on the web, I learned that I could add the command "Send to Mail Recipient" to my ribbon, but when I look at the list of All Commands, that particular command does not appear.  I can see "Send to Back" and "Send to Microsoft PowerPoint" but not the command I desire.

I have Microsoft Office 2010, including Word 2010 and Outlook 2010 on a Lenovo PC.

I'm reviewing a document, using the comment function.  I'm trying to make a comment on something in the header, but the comment box becomes greyed-out when I open the header (or footer for that matter).  Is commenting disabled for the header and footer?  Is there a way to enable it?

paste without format, but retain field

I am getting mixed results when pasting fields from one document to the next. I want the fields I paste to take on the formatting of the target document. What I've been finding is in one session, Word sometimes pastes and takes on the target formatting just fine; other sessions, it leaves the source formatting.

I should mention that I use the clipboard collector to hold the different fields I need to paste. 

I've tried changing the Word Options>Advanced> Cut,Copy, and paste  under Pasting between documents to Merge Formatting and the tried Keep Text Only, but neither change makes any difference. Any ideas on how I can force my paste to always take on target format?

- Program resets the change i made, example : the number of pinned documents or recent documents that should display

   i set it to 0 and after relaunch , it resets to 25!

1.2 One Note 2013

- I set in Options to automatically use Font :Segoe UI Size : 16 but after relaunch it resets to Calibri and size 11!

*****This is very annoying!

Adding Page Numbers

I know that you can add page numbers to your word document excluding the first page, but are you able to add page numbers starting at 1 from the third page, for example, I have a cover and a contents page but I only want the page numbers starting the page after the contents page.

In previous editions of Word, the "find" function could find anything. Now it is limited to alphabetic characters. I'm editing a 400 page document. I need to be able to locate people with the same last name and different first names. For instance, Edward McCabe and Sarah McCabe.

Word 365 is so limited. Is there an upgrade or an add-on available? Some way around this? If not, I'll have to load this book on an old computer

Surface 2 updated and lost saved information

My surface 2 updated and told me to save what I had been working on, and I did. It restarted at about 7:30 and when it turned on again, my document was still there, but it didn't have any information since about 4:30 even though I saved multiple times since then, and right before it restarted. It is not saved on my onedrive either.

Cannot open either Word or Excel. Both applications previously worked and problems started about the same time.

When attempting to open Excel 2013:

Excel cannot complete this task with available resources.  Choose less data or close other applications.

I have tried to reboot and open Word/Excel immediately, before opening any other applications.  

I have installed all available system and Microsoft updates and rebooted.

I am on a 64-bit Windows 8 platform.

So, I hear your concerns and see your advisements. Thanks!
Now, since I'm unfamiliar with the inner workings of Exch SBS vs Exch
non-SBS and I have an SBS server, what path and process would you suggest?
Are the suggestions from John (MVP) correct and can you further clarify what
you'd suggest relative to SBS.
I need to establish the mail2.mydomain.com certificate but I only SEE the
mail.mydomain.com certificate when getting on via OWA. How do I get Outlook
to work here too? Is it ONLY establishing the certificate ON Exchange SBS?
Again, please provide the SBS path & process.
I was under the impression that the Exchange Server discussion group was for
all OS versions for Exchange Server 2003. After this post, I'll put my posts
relative to SBS on the SBS Discussion Group.

I will have to check that. I have message tracking enabled, so will give
that a shot. I am almost 100% positive that they came from the outside
though.

I checked the last setting you mentioned, on resolving anonymous
senders....I do not have that enabled, so I guess I am ok there.

For the other 2:

1)Do you have any links for SenderID filtering, i.e. proper setup, etc.??
2)Not sure what you mean by make sure display name resolution is not enabled.

Just don't use it! (... by removing the check mark in SMTP VS properties |
General | Advanced | Edit).

Since it's integrated with Exchange Server 2003 SP2, there's no way to
remove it individually - you would have to remove SP2.

The whole question is really coming from what 926031 DOES NOT say…

If I understand you correctly OWA in a clustered Exchange 2003 SP2 on W2k3
SP2 works fine… OWA in a clustered Exchange 2003 SP1 (and base code) does
not work on Windows Server 2003 SP2 (and prior).

926031 does not say that… Do you have any influence within Microsoft to
have them update 926031 so that it is more clear on this compatibility issue?

Based on my research, the IP 77.194.251.164 and 203.236.112.95 are not the
MX of yahoo.com. You Exchange try to send email to yahoo.com to a wrong
address.

There are 2 probably reasons caused this issue: the wrong DNS or the SMTP
connector.

Reason 1: Wrong DNS
Your SBS cannot resolve correct IP address from yahoo.com. If you SBS DNS
pointing to itself, please check the DNS server on your SBS:

1. Open DNS management console on SBS (run command "dnsmgmt.msc")
2. Right click the server name, select Clear Cache.

You can run nslookup command on SBS as following:

1. Open a command prompt.
2. Type the following:
nslookup
3. Type the following:
set q=mx
This sets a filter to only collect Internet Mail Exchanger (MX) records and
related information.
4. Type the following
domain_name .com

where domain_name is the domain that you want to obtain the DNS records
for, for example, microsoft.com or msn.com.

Please compare the result with the following page. Are they same?

and

Reason 2: You create SMTP connector for the yahoo.com domain. Please check
the SMTP connector on SBS. Ensure you do not send email to yaoo.com thru

Sorry for such a sloppy post.

You are correct in saying that we chose to not install the doent imaging
program. The action that i get is expected out of windows: it opens in the
picture/fax viewer. what i don't expect is the file types to disappear out
of the list, which is what our 3rd party app (eRoom) looks at. It doesn't
have to be the MS Doent imaging for eRoom to open it, it just needs an
association. So even though there is no listed association, Windows still
knows how to handle it, but eRoom does not.

Without office installed at all it would have TIF listed and it is
associated with the picture and fax viewer. Somehow it still knows to use it,
but there is no TIF file type listed. Dang, i'm getting confused even
writing this....hope that clarifies it some.


I don't expect them to open in the doent imaging program. They do somehow

WWell on advice from someone where I purchased the PC, I put in the recovery
disk, went through all of that, took all night. I then tried to reinstall
Office 2007. I got through the installation. It was successfull as was the
configuration. I then saw a screen that asked me to "validate" I believe it
said. I had the option to do it online or by phone. I selected online. I
think it was a mistake. The progress bar was going then I didn't see it move
but instead saw a message that said the validation was successful.
Evidently, it was not as I still don't have this program on this computer.
I'm getting a bit worked up. It's a $150 piece of junk for about a week now.
I think Microsoft needs to try a little harder with this Vista and Office
2007. Who do I call about a piece of $150 junk? Why does this on line
validation have to take place anyway? You bought it, you have the product
key, why not let it fly like the older versions? We are getting way, way too
many steps involved in some processes that should be simple. I just want to
run office like I did on XP and before that on Win 95. Life is just getting
far too complicated and Micorsoft is not helping much as I see it.

Every time I open a document by double clicking on it,  the computer opens it in "protected" and "compatibility mode" and changes the file name to "Wd00000012" or similar. I can edit but needs to resave every time.

The documents were all created with word Office 365/2013, the machine is running W7/Office 365/W2013. I have tried with just creating, saving and then trying to double click to open - same result.

I have discovered that right clicking the file and selecting "edit" opens the file correctly and allows it to be saved immediately back to the current location. I have also tried to resolve the compatibility issue by going into the trust centre settings and altering "protected view" options so that no internet documents etc open in protected mode. None of this has helped.

Also, by starting Word first and then browsing to the file makes it open correctly.

Any advice much appreciated,

Mysterious behavior of photos

I use Microsoft Office Picture Manager to edit digital photos for insertion in blog posts, on Facebook, as email attachments, etc. Although I invariably choose the "Document" size on the Compress Pictures tab, and they all end up the same dimensions (in pixels) and about the same size (in kb), they occasionally behave very strangely when inserted in Word.

The first screen shot below shows two picture files as listed in Windows Explorer. The second shows the result when these two pictures are inserted in Word. The Size tab of Format Picture shows both of them as being at 100% even though one is 8" x 10.67" while the other is 2.56" x 3.41".

Does anyone have any ideas?

Here's the problem. The text in the sidebar starts about a third of the way down the sidebar. I want to start at the top of the sidebar. How do I do this?

Page numbering in Word 2010

I am creating a document that has both headers and footers.

The footer is identical throughout the document and contains page numbering (except for the first page).

The headers are a bit more complicated:

The document is divided into sections. Each section header includes the section title and the number of the page in this specific section.

Here's the problem:  starting an new section, I defined page numbering in the header  to start from 1 and it automatically did the same in the footer. I went to the footed and told it to continue from previous section, and it automatically changed the header to do the same.

IS THERE A WAY TO SEPARATE PAGE NUMBERING IN THE HEADER & FOOTER OF THE SAME DOCUMENT?!

Pictures not showing in Word 2007, but print OK

When I start the computer, I get a message saying something like "unable to find module ..../cnmss" and I now can't see pictures in Word 2007, though they print OK. I have looked at existing questions about not displaying  pictures, but couldn't find anything that helped.  Hope someone can!

Word 2010/2013: How to use Go To menu to go to (e.g.) Endnote 5 in Chapter 2

I have a document that contains two chapters, each in its own section. Endnote numbering is correctly set to restart at each section in the whole document.

The problem is this (I am giving a simplified example):

Chapter 1  has two endnotes, numbered 1 and 2.

Chapter 2 has ten endnotes, numbered 1 through 10.


If I use the Go To menu to go to an endnote, and enter "3", Word goes to endnote 1 in chapter 2, which is the third endnote in the document, even though it is numbered 1. If I use Go To to go to endnote 8, it takes me to endnote 6 in chapter 2.

I seem to remember that some Word dialogs have ways of specifying pages or other items within a section, but I can't find any syntax that seems to solve this problem. 

It would be very inconvenient to through-number all the notes temporarily, because I am marking changes from a printout in which the correct numbers apply. In my actual document, there are six chapters, each with almost a hundred endnotes, so the problem is not at all easy to deal with.

Help with runtime error 438 - caused by using Office 2010 macro in Office 2007?

Hi,

I am trying to run a visual basic macro in excel 2007 that was created in excel 2010.

When working, the macro creates a word document, populates it with data in the spreadsheet then converts to a pdf before emailing.

I'm getting a 438 error at the point where it creates the word document.  I believe this is down to the different version of word I am using (having made some changes to the references in excel (to version 12.0).

The debugger has highlighted the following code as the issue:

Spacing issue in Office Professional Plus 2010

Since of late when i type in Microsoft Word 2010 after i press the enter button there s a huge space and when i try changing the spacing it does not change. But when i do press the enter and swift button together then i would not get the huge space. I am using Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 and running Windows 8. I faced this problem since of late and previously i did not face any issues like this. Glad if anyone could give me a permanent solution so that i wouldn't need to press the enter and the swift button together all the time which is kind of cumbersome. Thanks 

Error opening word

How to keep source font color when merging styles ?

I am trying to insert syntax highlighted code snippet into my MS word document. I have created a style for code sections in my MS word document and I would like to use it for the copied code snippet. While copying, when I use "Merge styles" option, I am losing all the syntax highlighting and the whole code becomes black colored (because my base fornt color is black). I would like to keep the source font color formatting but merge it into my code section style (which basically just enables line numbering and background shading).

Cannot use Save As to get a picture into Word from a web page

While you should be able to copy/paste or drag an image into Word, another option is to right-click on the image and choose Save As. Save it to your My Pictures folder and then use Insert | Illustrations | Pictures to insert the picture you saved. When you save the picture, note that the default filename (the one used for the online image) may be something you would not recognize, so you may want to change the filename when you save it.



I don't get the Save As option described above, so I'm stuck. (Before I tried this I tried a simple Control + C and was told "Item not Collected; Format not supported by Office Clipboard" What next? 

Printing Problem

Unable to print from Office 2013 Home and School (using Windows 7) although the newly selected default printer says it is online and ready.  Pinter shoots out blank pages.  Will print from Internet sites.  Has printed successfully with no issues with another printer.
