How do I get my screensaver to come on when I leave my computer

Posted: 13 Jul 2005 03:06 PM PDT

Hi Dottie,

Screen savers are often .SCR file types, which
you can search for using Start=>Search/Find.

Once you've found the screen saver you wish to use
you can create a shortcut to it and place
it on a toolbar or on your desktop. Right click the
shortcut and you can assign a keyboard shortcut that
you can use to activate it when you walk away from your
computer.

Transform not reflected in Add/Remove Off2003?

Posted: 11 Jul 2005 03:41 AM PDT

Hi Gerry,

Short version is that the 'intelligent setup', if
left on its own will generally believe that when you
update from a prior version of Office (MST files only
apply to a first install of a product) that if you/users
have set things up they probably want to continue to work
the same way, so their settings, rather than the Office
defaults, or the ones you've set as 'new user' defaults
are migrated (carried forward).

If you use the 'do not migrate' choice for an individual
element or a tree branch, or use the settings value of
NOFEATURESTATEMIGRATION =1
for the transform you're telling the installer to replace
the user's current choices, features, settings with what
you're selecting as part of standardization in the upgrade.

Another case where you may see Add/Remove programs not matching
is if your ini file mentions a different MST.

=======
<<"Gerry Hickman" <net> wrote in message news:%phx.gbl...
"Gerry Hickman" <net> wrote in message
news:phx.gbl...

OK, I've looked into it in some detail.

It turns out that Add/Remove programs was correctly finding my transform (I
can see from the log file), but for some reason the feature list in the UI
was showing Office defaults instead of those set in the transform.

I created a new transform, and this time ticked the box "Do not migrate
previous installation State" on screen 7 of 24. I then chose to apply it to
the whole tree.

Reinstalling office on the client machine, and going into "Add/Remove
Programs", now correctly shows the feature list chosen in the transform.

I don't really understand "Do not migrate previous installation State", does
it mean from a previous version of Office or a previous install of THIS
version of office? The help file seems unhelpful.

When I run the Office cleaner it tells me these files still exist....
So I complete the cleaner and run it again and they are still there, I have
tried manual deletion and the computer will not let me delete.

Hi SeaMain,

Can't tell you if Firefox has a setting to influence
this, or if it may be related to the sequence of

normally write themselves in as options for Internet

Check the value in this registry key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Default HTML Editor
It has subkeys including a shell extension.

Have you tried running a repair reinstall of Office

Automatic calculating

Posted: 07 Dec 2004 02:13 AM PST

Hi Steve

The column [Duration2] contains calculated fields [Work]-[Duration1]

Work = Actual work + Remaining work
Duration 1 = project budget (days)

We use a gantt chart view to change values in a Remaining work column and it
used to automatically refresh the values in Duration 2.

It's only since we upgraded to 2003 that this seems to have stopped?

Hope I've explained this properly?

I have to disagree with Joe's response. The correct answer is "yes".
Depending on how the files are structured and the differences between

method is to run a comparison between the two files to determine the
differences using the Compare Project Versions which is utility in
Project 2003 and an add-in for Project 2000. Once the differences are
known, the file that has the greater difference from the baseline (i.e.
before your updates or your manager's updates) can be updated manually
or updates can be automated with a VBA macro.

However a much better solution is to put the file on a shared server.
That way changes can only be made by one person at a time and no
conflicts occur.

Hope this helps.

Bad critical path

Posted: 04 Dec 2004 01:03 PM PST

There is something strange going on here. But of even more concern is you
have a notion of what the critical path "should" be. How did you arrive at
the conclusion that certain tasks were critical so that you consider it an
error if Project doesn't reflect the same? There is a very exact
mathematical definition that determines whether a task is critical or not
.... I wonder if you are using some other criterion?

Question on resource leveling

Posted: 03 Dec 2004 01:28 PM PST

A couple of points:

When you have a task with an estimated duration of 10 days and you assign a
resource to it at 50%, Project assumes you had that 50% assignment in mind
when you came up with the 10-day number to begin with and so it doesn't
change it. If you assign at 100% Project says this requires 10 days @ 100%
or 80 man-hours. OTOH, if you assign at 50% Project says this task is worth
10 days at 50% or 40 man-hours. To get the duration to change and reflect
the 20 days you'd hoped for, you need to do it in two steps, assigning him
at 100% and then EDITING the assignment to reduce him to 50%. Otherwise set
it to 20 days right from the get-go, based on the knowledge that that is how
long it will take for a part-time resource to complete it.

Second, resource leveling doesn't do what you seem to think it does.
Leveling only has meaning when resources are OVERALLOCATED, that is, you
have the *same* guy is assigned to both of those tasks at 100% and so he is
expected to be in two places at once, working on two mutually exclusive
tasks at the same time. In that case, leveling would delay one of the tasks
so as to resolve the conflict. But that's all it does - shift the time
frame of the work back and forth. It never adjusts the percentage of
allocation nor does it change the duration the resource will work on the
task.

FYI - the duration of summary tasks is not necessarily the sum of the
durations of the indented subtasks. It will be from when the earliest
subtask begins until the latest subtask ends. If the subtasks star
together, are not linked and run in parallel for example, the summary task
duration will be simply the duration of the longest subtask, regardless of
how many subtasks there are.

[discuss] [Ubuntu] Remove OOo Draw from the default install?

Hi,

I find the original question unqualified as the author obviously didn't
take any effort to dig deeper into the topic or working with Draw before
going to the list. The replies at the thread say most things that have
to be said.

Personally I live in Beijing/China. OOo market share is pretty low here:
http://www.webmasterpro.de/portal/news/2010/02/05/international-openoffice-market-shares.html
I was talking to some of my Chinese friends, who frequently work with
OOo. They are also using Draw and find the features rich and appealing.
However there are some issues for them, primarily complaining that there
isn't spend too much development effort on Draw, both regarding bug
fixes and lack of new features. As many Chinese users are loving to
create graphical artwork, my friends are sure that improvements for Draw
would also help the general OOo adoption in China. One of my friends
called Zhang Weiwu tried to spark a discussion about on a mailing list
(sorry, cannot remember which one) some months ago with little response
unfortunately.

Best regards,
Peter

I suggest the OP recheck what he's doing, then simplify his spreadsheet
to give something easy to understand that exhibits the fault. If he's
lucky, he'll spot a problem while doing this; if not he could post the

Creating charts with objects in excel

Posted: 03 Aug 2008 06:48 PM PDT

Yeah, the Help still leaves a lot to be desired, but they are improving it
steadily :-) In the meanwhile you can access the AutoShapes either from the
Drawing toolbar or from the Toolbox - Object Palette (I kinda prefer the
latter) but you can also use the top edge of the Callouts in the Drawing
toolbar to "tear off" the callouts to keep them handy. If you use the Object
Palette select Callouts from the dropdown.

Either way, simply click the one you want to use, then position your pointer
where you want to start the callout line. Then drag away from that spot to
where you want to type the content. Alternatively you can simply click
rather than dragging, then adjust size & position from there.

You'll find a little more if you look up "shapes" in the Help - there are
additional links on the same page.

Also, once you format the first one you can Control/Right-Click it & select
Set As Default Shape. Each one you create from then on (in that file) will
be formatted the same way but can also be edited if you wish.

Eject the update.dmg virtual disk that was mounted when you opened the

Run the update installer application that's on your desktop.

Compatability with iMac - Really

Hi again,

Thank you for clarifying.

Office for Mac does all of the standard stuff well. In many cases I
would argue that it does it better than the Windows version. An
important, striking example of the difference is doing Mail Merge. I
find the Mac's interface to be far superior (logical, easy to use and
understand) to the Windows way (commands splayed all over the place).

The List feature in Mac Excel is still more mature than it is in Windows
Excel, and I've come to rely on Lists heavily.

Mac PowerPoint's Save as Movie feature has become very popular with the
advent of Web 2.0 collaborations, iPods and iPhones.

Then there's the advanced Project Gallery and Projects that just isn't
even in the Windows version of Office at all! You don't hear the Windows
folks talking about that very much, do you? Windows users don't even
know about it for the most part.

I have seen occasional postings complaining about speed. These problems
seem to affect only a few specific people. I've also noticed that
Microsoft employees have responded to some of these people requesting
further information from them, which leads me to believe that these few,
isolated problems are being addressed.

My advice is go for the Mac. On the whole, most people who make the
switch seem very happy about it.

Hi Niles -

I'm sure you realize that it can be a bit picky but you've probably fished
around enough that you would have seen a glimpse of the bugger by now so it
must be a bit more entailed.

Make sure Office is up-to-date (12.1.1)... Likewise for OS X (10.5.4), and
run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions just to be sure you're not
chasing your tail. If that alone doesn't resolve it, try restarting your Mac
then try again.

Is this the case in *all* files or just one in particular? That will be a
determining factor in how to proceed.

Office 11.5 Update Require Administrator Privileges

I would do an "Archive & Install" Just be sure to check Preserve Users and

underlying problems. The last time I had to do this the only thing I had to
re-install was the MSFT Keyboard software.

Once the install has finished, your system will be at whatever level the
disk you have is. So if your Install DVD/CD disk is 10.5.0, that's what
version of OS will be on your Mac. You will need to download the appropriate
Combo Updater (I stress combo updater and not the incremental updaters from
Software Update) from Apple's site to restore the system to a higher
version. After you run the combo, allow Software Update to download and
install any additional updates.

Run "Remove Office" again, then re-install from the CD. Even though you do
not use all of the applications, it's best to let them all install as it
could cause problems with future updates. The only exception would be MSN as
it's not an Office application.

When installing, make sure all running applications are quit.
Restart after installing.
Run Repair Permissions (this is debatable but it certainly doesn't hurt to
run it)

From what you are describing I'm suspicious of your base OS files.

You might need to download the combo updater from Apple and run it again
rather than using Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially
problem-causing files. Several users have reported this fixed some odd
problems they were having with Office. Combo updaters will install on the
same version as they¹re applying‹no need to roll back or do a clean install.

Leopard:

Mac OS X 10.5.4 Combo Update

<http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1054comboupdate.html>

If it fails there, do an "Archive and Install" of the OS. "Archive and
Install" moves existing system files to a folder named Previous System and
then installs Mac OS X again. Just be sure to check Preserve Users and
Network Settings when you select Archive & Install.

The last time I had to do an "Archive & Install" the only thing I had to

How to set default formatting for pictures

Hi Rus -

I'm afraid that's just not true, although it is a very common misconception.
Images are far more complex & varied than most have any reason to suspect -
but it's as deceptive as watching Tiger Woods shoot a 64 round & assuming
that golf must be a pretty easy game no matter how you approach it. There
are literally dozens of image file formats, each one having its own
characteristics which sharply distinguish it from each of the others as far
as the computer is concerned.

Perhaps they "should", but for the reason stated above they *can't* be.

An image is essentially a foreign body being placed in a file created by a
totally different type of program & having a completely different file
structure. When you use the host program's Insert command its import filters
are employed which enable it to better interpret what that foreign body is
all about. Likewise, when an image is copied to the clipboard there's
actually far more information included than just what the eye can clearly
see. But when you paste, the receiving app *can* see it and can also
"absorb" what it needs to better interpret it along with the actual image.

When you use the drag 'n' drop method you bypass all of that interpretive
capability... It's much the same as having a complex piece of equipment
delivered by a professional who effectively trains you to use it as opposed
to having it dumped on your doorstep along with a not that reads "figure it
out for yourself".

You'd best be careful - that *might* be closer to the truth than you
think... But *which* - and *how many* governments??? And in what capacity???

.... And what might I be forced to do if you blow my cover???????:-)
