Creating charts with objects in excel Posted: 03 Aug 2008 06:48 PM PDT Yeah, the Help still leaves a lot to be desired, but they are improving it steadily :-) In the meanwhile you can access the AutoShapes either from the Drawing toolbar or from the Toolbox - Object Palette (I kinda prefer the latter) but you can also use the top edge of the Callouts in the Drawing toolbar to "tear off" the callouts to keep them handy. If you use the Object Palette select Callouts from the dropdown. Either way, simply click the one you want to use, then position your pointer where you want to start the callout line. Then drag away from that spot to where you want to type the content. Alternatively you can simply click rather than dragging, then adjust size & position from there. You'll find a little more if you look up "shapes" in the Help - there are additional links on the same page. Also, once you format the first one you can Control/Right-Click it & select Set As Default Shape. Each one you create from then on (in that file) will be formatted the same way but can also be edited if you wish. Installer quits during upgrade install Posted: 03 Aug 2008 02:03 PM PDT "com" wrote: This is a first for this error. 1) Download and run the Apple combo updater. Restart your computer and Repair Permissions. Mac OS X 10.5.4 Combo Update (For both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs ) <http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1054comboupdate.html> 2) Try this workaround for the installer: Launch the updater Open the update.dmg and copy it's contents (the update installer app) to your desktop. Eject the update.dmg virtual disk that was mounted when you opened the update.dmg and also make sure your Office DVD is ejected (if it was in). Run the update installer application that's on your desktop. -- Diane |
Compatability with iMac - Really Posted: 02 Aug 2008 01:51 PM PDT JDL51 wrote: Hi again, Thank you for clarifying. Office for Mac does all of the standard stuff well. In many cases I would argue that it does it better than the Windows version. An important, striking example of the difference is doing Mail Merge. I find the Mac's interface to be far superior (logical, easy to use and understand) to the Windows way (commands splayed all over the place). The List feature in Mac Excel is still more mature than it is in Windows Excel, and I've come to rely on Lists heavily. Mac PowerPoint's Save as Movie feature has become very popular with the advent of Web 2.0 collaborations, iPods and iPhones. Then there's the advanced Project Gallery and Projects that just isn't even in the Windows version of Office at all! You don't hear the Windows folks talking about that very much, do you? Windows users don't even know about it for the most part. I have seen occasional postings complaining about speed. These problems seem to affect only a few specific people. I've also noticed that Microsoft employees have responded to some of these people requesting further information from them, which leads me to believe that these few, isolated problems are being addressed. My advice is go for the Mac. On the whole, most people who make the switch seem very happy about it. -Jim -- Jim Gordon Mac MVP MVPs are independent experts who are not affiliated with Microsoft. http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Visit my blog http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-i7JMeio7cqvhotIUwCzaJWq9 |

Posted: 31 Jul 2008 10:27 AM PDT Thanks to all! I have turned off Suitcase Fusion and resorted to (the FREE) Linotype FontExplorerX... Life is considerably better now. Not sure why it was only affecting Office08, but now I don't really care that much either. Thanks again. |
Posted: 31 Jul 2008 09:16 AM PDT Hi Niles - I'm sure you realize that it can be a bit picky but you've probably fished around enough that you would have seen a glimpse of the bugger by now so it must be a bit more entailed. Make sure Office is up-to-date (12.1.1)... Likewise for OS X (10.5.4), and run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions just to be sure you're not chasing your tail. If that alone doesn't resolve it, try restarting your Mac then try again. Is this the case in *all* files or just one in particular? That will be a determining factor in how to proceed. Office 11.5 Update Require Administrator Privileges Posted: 30 Jul 2008 05:54 AM PDT "com" wrote: I would do an "Archive & Install" Just be sure to check Preserve Users and Network Settings when you select Archive & Install. This should fix your underlying problems. The last time I had to do this the only thing I had to re-install was the MSFT Keyboard software. Once the install has finished, your system will be at whatever level the disk you have is. So if your Install DVD/CD disk is 10.5.0, that's what version of OS will be on your Mac. You will need to download the appropriate Combo Updater (I stress combo updater and not the incremental updaters from Software Update) from Apple's site to restore the system to a higher version. After you run the combo, allow Software Update to download and install any additional updates. Run "Remove Office" again, then re-install from the CD. Even though you do not use all of the applications, it's best to let them all install as it could cause problems with future updates. The only exception would be MSN as it's not an Office application. When installing, make sure all running applications are quit. Restart after installing. Run Repair Permissions (this is debatable but it certainly doesn't hurt to run it) -- Diane |

How to set default formatting for pictures Posted: 28 Jul 2008 04:34 AM PDT Hi Rus - He's really a rather pleasant guy so I doubt he'll be prone to retaliate :-) Some comments below: On 7/29/08 4:28 AM, in article caR9absDaxw, "com" <com> wrote: I'm afraid that's just not true, although it is a very common misconception. Images are far more complex & varied than most have any reason to suspect - but it's as deceptive as watching Tiger Woods shoot a 64 round & assuming that golf must be a pretty easy game no matter how you approach it. There are literally dozens of image file formats, each one having its own characteristics which sharply distinguish it from each of the others as far as the computer is concerned. Perhaps they "should", but for the reason stated above they *can't* be. An image is essentially a foreign body being placed in a file created by a totally different type of program & having a completely different file structure. When you use the host program's Insert command its import filters are employed which enable it to better interpret what that foreign body is all about. Likewise, when an image is copied to the clipboard there's actually far more information included than just what the eye can clearly see. But when you paste, the receiving app *can* see it and can also "absorb" what it needs to better interpret it along with the actual image. When you use the drag 'n' drop method you bypass all of that interpretive capability... It's much the same as having a complex piece of equipment delivered by a professional who effectively trains you to use it as opposed to having it dumped on your doorstep along with a not that reads "figure it out for yourself". You'd best be careful - that *might* be closer to the truth than you think... But *which* - and *how many* governments??? And in what capacity??? .... And what might I be forced to do if you blow my cover???????:-) Regards |:>) Bob Jones [MVP] Office:Mac |
