No, because Office 2003 will not run on Windows ME. You need Windows
2000 SP3 or higher, Windows XP, or Windows 2003.

expends the resources to launch widows messenger as normal. Is there a way to

Office XP Small Business Edition is an OEM only version of Office and can
only be installed on the computer on which it was purchased. The Small
Business program he is referring to is the Office XP SBE CD.

Installation errors in Office

Posted: 18 Sep 2004 09:19 AM PDT

Unfortunately, the error messages are extremely unhelpful.

For example, here is what occurred when I replicated the problem by
attempting a Detect and Fix operation:

The process begins normally; the first major step is "Gathering required
information..."
The progress bar fills up slowly, gets about halfway, and then I receive a
modal dialog box saying:
"Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 Setup failed."

I click OK, and both dialogs close, and the Detect and Fix is canceled.

Every once in awhile, I get the opportunity to send an error report to
Microsoft, but even this does not always happen.

I wish I could give more information, but I don't have information to give.
There is no "Details...." button or anything of that nature to help explain
the source of the error.

All I know is that it happens every single time I try to do anything with
Office setup, running locally or from the original installation CD.

How to upgrade Office Pro onto new computer?

Posted: 14 Sep 2004 12:21 PM PDT

Hi T.,

The OEM editions of Office are licensed only to
the original computer. Those that require activation
use that as the enforcement method.

You can, however, use an OEM edition CD or install
as the qualifying product for a retail edition
(any package) of Office System 2003.
http://microsoft.com/office/howtobuy

If you purchase a retail MS Office 2003 edition then
the license/install is not limited to a particular
PC and you can move your copy of MS Office 2003.

===
<<"tcumming" <com> wrote in message news:google.com...
Do I understand correctly that my OEM 'old' Pro 2000 license permits
an upgrade to Pro 2003 on my 'new' computer?

There are bits of discussion in the newsgroup to the effect that OEM
licenses are bound to their original hardware and cannot be relocated
to new hardware. It's not clear to me that this restriction has
applied to *all* versions of Office.

...and while I'm at it..

If I install a retail upgrade on top of my 'trial' am I correct that I
end up with a perpetual (meaning transferable to a 'newer' machine)
license?

Thanks for the reply. >>

Yes, you could delete 2.2, but I think, that this should have already
happend during the installation of version 2.3.

Check before you delete something, you might need.

[discuss] OpenOffice Writer - Page Numbering issue

For discussion/action:

I think OpenOffice Writer needs a much better page numbering function. It
would be much better if there was an easier way to edit the page numbers and
global page numbers in the OpenOffice Writer. Presently, it's hard to set
page numbers up unless you want to go nuts editing page footers, etc. There
really ought to be a better user-friendly option in the OpenOffice Writer to
set, edit and remove page numbers easily for the entire document. Yes,
presently you can edit the footer on a specific page, but it doesn't work
for the entire document. I'm hoping that some gifted programmer out there
can fix this problem, I think it wouldn't be too difficult.

Thank you,Sam Eubanks

[discuss] OpenOffice and Sharepoint

Consider some other alternatives to sharepoint.

Lotus has team rooms and repositories that are acessible by both Windows
and Linux clients.

You can use CVS or Subversion, these are also commonly used repositories.
There are GUI interfaces such as Tortoise.
Microsoft is attempting to use Sharepointe to protect their monopoly. CVS
and Subversion provide the ability to save change-by-change
revisions, to merge revisions, and to manager the history efficiently.
Since these repositories can also be secured using LDAP, access control
can be very tightly constricted and controlled.

Try to determine the real goal. What are the top 5 features they want
from Sharepoint?

Then look at how OSS applications can meet those same goals.
Since OSS implementations can support both Windows AND Linux, make the
case for the OSS alternatives.

[discuss] OpenOffice and Sharepoint

Hello,

I work for a fairly large school district. We will be implementing
Microsoft SharePoint over the next several months. I personally love
Open Office but unfortunately it appears that there is no connector so
that Open Office will integrate with SharePoint the same way that Office
2003 and Office 2007 integrate with SharePoint. This is a bit
frightening because SharePoint is rapidly expanding in many enterprise
environments such as ours.

Anyway, I wanted to pass along the suggestion that the someone look into
a SharePoint connector much the same way that the Linux Evolution e-mail
client came up with an Exchange connector. That's a different situation
but the same concept is the same. Thanks again for your wonderful
product. At home it is the only office suite that I use but I'm afraid
that I'm getting wedged out from using it at work since there is an
almost seamless integration between Office and Sharepoint now.

Have a good day,

James Rawlyk

Database Report Printing Problem

Posted: 22 Jan 2005 08:01 AM PST

Reports, by their very nature are indiscriminate,
I cannot see how you could do this.
Of one base I have, 29,000 records, the report on
one particular field, would show occurrences from a singleton to
24 lines.
The addition of one more record could change the matrix instantly.

It's just a bug we have to put up with.

| The trick is to give each record in your report the same number of
| lines, regardless whether the fields are filled or empty. Count the
| number of lines on your page and make this number divisble by the number
| of lines in your record. The number of lines on your page can be
| customized by your upper and lower margins.

Matt, just a guess, but do you have Norton AV running? If so, try disabling
the office plugins and script blocking. These can cause a memory problem...

How do I change View to Details from Thumbnails in Word 2007?

Posted: 23 Jun 2013 01:14 PM PDT

When I look at all the folders on my computer I can change the VIEW to details, thumbnails, etc. of all files. No problems there at all.

However, when I open the file folder icon in Word 2007 I only see variations of the thumbnails view. How do I change the View of files in Word 2007 to show Details and not Thumbnails?

Thanks much.  Albert

smiley face autocorrect

Posted: 23 Jun 2013 10:15 AM PDT

I have been trying to add a smiley face autocorrection to office 2010 for 2 months and it doesn't work!
The char is alt + 074 in the "Wingdings" font, but when you type, it doesn't work because it doesn't match the real font.
Please help :)

Word 2003 - one picture will not print, others are fine

Posted: 22 Jun 2013 11:26 AM PDT

I am still using Word 2003 because it meets my limited needs.

I have produced a 36-page document with many jpg pictures embedded in the text, all of which display correctly in Print Preview and all of which print correctly - apart from one.  This is a copy of a Birth Certificate which is full-width (as are other pictures which do print correctly).  The Certificate shows up correctly in Print Preview, but when I try to print that page the result is an outline with a cross in a little box at the top left-hand corner.

How do I correct this?

Change save in location in Word 2007 - Update

Posted: 22 Jun 2013 07:45 AM PDT

In reference to my previous post "Change save in location in Word 2007" which I prematurely marked as answered, unfortunately I am still having a problem with this . If I navigate to the folder containing the folder that I wish to add to the Places Bar, select folder, click on tools the only options that I am offered are -

Map network drive

Disconnect network drive

Synchronize

Folder Options

For example I have a folder on my D drive named "Bidvest - My Documents" (nothing to do with the actual Windows My Documents) and if I select it, so it is highlighted only, not actually opened, the above options are all that I am offered. I then tried this on another folder that sits inside "Bidvest - My Documents" but the same options are offered but no Add to my places. What am I missing please. Is there some other setting that may have been changed that is not allowing me this option.

Thanks again for your time Pedro

Can I set the Track Changes default as 'on' for all opened documents?

Posted: 22 Jun 2013 12:35 AM PDT

I occasionally forget to activate track changes, and need to redo a page of editing after switching tracking on.

It would be nice if I could undo all changes, activate tracking, then redo my changes, but it doesn't seem to allow that.

Thus, I would like track changes to be on as the default setting for all documents that I open. Is this possible?
How about a reminder to pop up for me to switch tracking on?

Any guru's out there?

A look at kern.log says:

I'll turn off CONFIG_APM_REAL_MODE_POWER_OFF=y and see what happens.

Then use SMB. Or use NFS and make sure that the client doesn't remap
users. Or use NFS plus kerberos.

Is there any reason why I have to repeat this?

There is no such thing as "the user logging in on each machine"> So
your plan goes out the window right there. COme back when you can
rephrase without that concept. Each machine has dozens of people logged
on to it.

Yes, of course. I said so! Access is per-machine. Unless you use
kerberized NFS.

Of course.

Why not? If you can't, then don't use NFS, since NFS authentication is
per machine, not per user (modulo kerberos and v4.x).

Let your users log in to your machine if you prefer. Or let them use
SMB.

Why? What's the problem?

Of course it does! Do you think it happens by magic? Your client has to
be configured to use ldap authentication agaisnt a particular ldap
server.

Uh - who told it to use dhcp? Most people set the IP address THEY want
But if you want to get the address of the ldap server, why don't you do
it via some other more normal mechanism?

And what's the difference to what you'd do in linux or os x? In all
cases you simply configure the machien the way you want it. Except that
in windows you can't do it the way you want it unless it coincides with
BGs master plan. In linux, you can do anything you want.

What is your difficulty? When I set up ldap it was a question of
flipping to the howto, making the couple of lines changes in the config
files they said to make, and hey presto. I said above what was required
- just a few changes in the pam.d files for login, su, ssh and such,
plus a fallback generic change in the resolution order for pwgetent in
libc via nsswitch. Your libs shoudl already by ldap ready.

Oh - I don't recall where one had to configure the ldap client. It
should be obvious where to tell it what the server is. Presumably in
/etc/ldap. Check the howto!

two "at" in host-name?

In article <at>, OS.IS.LINUX wrote:

Not enough detail - what was the context? For that matter, what post,

HUH??? Well, hostnames are defined by RFC952, which starts out with

1. A "name" (Net, Host, Gateway, or Domain name) is a text string up
to 24 characters drawn from the alphabet (A-Z), digits (0-9), minus
sign (-), and period (.). Note that periods are only allowed when
they serve to delimit components of "domain style names". (See
RFC-921, "Domain Name System Implementation Schedule", for
background). No blank or space characters are permitted as part of a
name. No distinction is made between upper and lower case. The first
character must be an alpha character. The last character must not be
a minus sign or period.

Technically, this refers to the original hosts table that predated DNS,
but it's still applicable. RFC1034 and 1035 also address hostnames,
but really don't change the characters (although the length is increased).

Now, I _really_ think you must be referring to something else, but I'm
not sure what it might be. If that is a _mail_ address, the '@' symbol
was used to denote relaying points (see RFC0821 section 3.6), but it's
quite rare now.

Right. That follows logically from the thread, the one in which you simply

accurately.

dual boot setup trouble - laptop (very detailed, need help)

Posted: 10 Sep 2004 11:27 AM PDT

> First try:

Did windows still boot after the resize?
I would suspect that far more then having grub/lilo in the MBR.

What are you doing during the installation?

No, it doesn't. But like you said, you made partitions. (point 1)
This is easy enough to fix though.
http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2004-May/msg00908.html
would have worked in this case.

There is no reason for this.

This is impossible, unless hda1 is your ext'd partition, but then
where is XP?

That was not the problem. I have many dual boot system with lilo/grub
in the MBR.

I do not use the NT loader, so I cannot tell if this is enough.

You have chosen type 0x0F, which is win95 extended.
No problem there.

Yes. if grub/lilo was installed there. Check the bootsect.lnx file
with a hex editor. Does it look ok?

Yes, all of them (the tools are not the problem). You can also create the
partitions first, eg, with partition magic from windows.

Can't restore Red Hat Ent V3 from tape

Posted: 10 Sep 2004 09:38 AM PDT

Dave wrote:

I know BRU and use it myself. It will backup all the files you specify.
CRU is a free package (that requires BRU) that will enable a bare-metal
restore. Not only does it restore files, it uses information (at backup
time) from fdisk so that it can remake the partition tables, etc. I.e., if
your machine gets hit by lightning, all you need do is buy a new one with
a suitable tape drive, and disk drives at least as large as the old ones,
put in the two floppies and the tape and be back where you started. It
remakes the partitions, sets up /dev with all your permissions, etc.

Assuming your partition table was not messed up, and you really backed up
everything under / (root), I would expect this to have worked. Assuming
you have a separate /boot partition properly located, or a machine where
the 1024 cylinder limit is not a problem (newer machines do not have this
problem).

In other words, you installed several updates without making a new backup?
In that case, you better have vmlinuz-2.4.21-15.0.4.EL ohn the machine as
well as it may try to boot that. But from your original description, you
do not even get to the point where it asks which version you want. Perhaps
grub does not ask if you have only one. Since I never have less than two
(SMP and UP), I do not know what it does.

Do you have splash.xpm.gz in /boot/grub?
