Are you talking about the technical installation, or the licensing? I'm
wondering the same thing, with the licensing.. I haven't even installed my
standard yet.. but looks like you have to toss it!

Exchange 2003 8331 Error

Posted: 07 Apr 2004 11:59 PM PDT

As a work around you can reboot the box. This will allow the process to
begin again. It should stay up and running for a while and allow your users
to be stamped by the RUSS.

Definitely call into Microsoft Support to get the fix, however if it is
going to take a while before you can do that you can do the workaround.

Hope that helps.

Outlook 2003 Message-ID madness!

Posted: 07 Apr 2004 06:34 PM PDT

No, that's a fine answer. It pointed me in the right direction! Just seems
silly to remove something like that, even if it is technically optional..
how hard is a checkbox to enable/disable it? anyway, just ranting..

Since you posted that, I have been trying to make it work. I confirmed that
sending mail through myrealbox.com (my mail provider) with Outlook 2003
results in no message-id (already knew that!).

I setup the SMTP service on W2K. If I send the same message from outlook to
'localhost', it then relays it on, and in the process it DOES add the
message-id header. So, this could be a good temporary solution.

But, I would want the SMTP service to receive from my clients on port 25 as
usual, then forward the mail to my existing server which is on another port
on the LAN. It would continue to receive from the 'net on the WAN
interface. The 'smarthost' setting seems to work good for this and I can
set another port no problem. I just have to figure out how to make it send
on SSL.. this is because with my current server, I can set the port for SMTP
and SSL SMTP separately, and select which interface each is active on, but I
can't set different ports for one service on two interfaces. :(

Thanks for your help.

Need help to stop relaying on exchange 5.5

Matt,

thanks for replying. I looked at IMS and 'always send notifications when
NDRs are generated' was not selected. We have selected 'multiple matches for
an email address has occurred' . I did google search and it seems your
right. It just so happens I downloaded trial of surfcontrol for web and
email filtering. Problems with spam has kept me from setting up surfcontrol.
Hopefully I'll have surfcontrol setup tmrw.

Restore Public Folder

Posted: 07 Apr 2004 11:48 AM PDT

Hi willie:
I am having a simular problem like this. I have a tape back of the Public folder store, and I restored it to the originial place of the exchange server by the "Brightstore backup" from CA. For some reason, the exchange can not mount the public folder store any more. Is there anyway I can get the public folder back? Thanks a lot!

individual mailbox size

Interesting point about Outlook's performance.. a question in that regard..

when using Outlook with Exchange, aren't searches et al. processed on the
server, a-la client-server architecture? So, although it is 'relatively'
slower as the store grows, it should still be faster than an outlook client
with a PST file, right?

Thanks

Pivot Tables

I've created a pivot table for one of our clients with a DSN connection back to their ERP data in SQL 2008.  At a high level, the pivot tables are pretty amazing, but I've reached two hurdles that I can't figure out if there is a solution.

We are dealing with payroll check details.  For each check, there is a record for every type of pay an employee receives.  The power is that we can filter to user-specific types of pay for user-specific periods.  My challenges:

  1. Is there any way a user-specified column can be added to a pivot table without breaking the link to the source data?  For example, if we filter to 4 check dates and are displaying hours worked for each pay type as a column with a row total for all pay types, and want to get an average number of hours worked (row total / 4)
  2. Is there a way to filter the data based on a total value?  For example, in the above scenario, where we want to display only employees that worked an average of 30 hours or more per week.

I've noticed the PowerPivot add-on.  Curious if that adds a more dynamic user-friendly front to the pivot table functionality that would allow the above changes.

FINALLY, I got it to work! It looked like I had to add more keyboard
layout/IME options for "Add Input Language" screen. I guess the defaults
additions were not enough because I didn't see all those fancy features
in Language Bar for Chinese language. I don't remember having to add a
lot of options for Windows 2000 with Office 2000.

How come there is no writing option like English with its drawing pad
option? It is greyed out.

Upgrading Off2K to Off2K3 sometimes requires Off2K CD's

Posted: 02 Apr 2004 05:41 PM PST

We're using the Enterprise Pro version of Off2003, so, Publisher IS in
there, but, FrontPage isn't ,but, I am using a link to install it, as well
as OneNote at the same time as the main suite.

Maybe that's it, though, although ALL our machines have FrontPage, so, I'd
think it'd happen all the time...

Thanks!

Office XP vs Office 2003

Posted: 31 Mar 2004 04:33 PM PST

Windows 2000 is no longer shipped either. Once Microsoft comes out with a
new version of a product, they stop production on previous versions.
Windows XP is still shipping in the Home and Professional versions and
Windows 2003 server is also shipping.

Companies that purchase new equipment but have standardized on older
versions perform what is called a downgrade of the license to allow them to
run Windows 2000 and Office 2000/XP. Very few companies downgrade to Office
97 as it is now unsupported by Microsoft.
