How old is this machine? There are 2 (at least) types of boot CD and somes
BIOSes do not understand or recognise the newer one. Anything made in, say, the
last 3 or 4 years should be fine with both. Hmm, yes, Google shows this as a
Pentium 166MMX so it's pretty old. Since you're posting to several linux groups
I presume this is a Linux CD you are trying to boot so maybe you could try a
different distribution which might use a different boot mechanism. I think the
safer one to look for is something called floppy disk emulation mode. Maybe a
BIOS upgrade might help too?

Unlikely to help in this case. A fucked MBR just means the data is
inaccessible. A mkfs means it has been overwritten.
If you multiboot, it is best to keep data separate form OS.

(1) How much memory do you have?
This is more important than the processor speed.

(2) Why not try installing in text mode?

How to copy the root partition?

Posted: 31 Mar 2007 03:21 PM PDT

Hi I now tried to copy root with "sudo rsync -ax / /mnt/hd" but I got
some errors:
sudo rsync -ax / /mnt/hd" but I got
file has vanished:
"/var/lib/apt/lists/de.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_feisty_main_i18 n_Translation-de"
file has vanished:
"/var/lib/apt/lists/de.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_feisty_multiver se_i18n_Translation-de"
file has vanished:

rsync warning: some files vanished before they could be transferred

most files have been copied just the above not. Do I need to care about
these errors or can I just proceed without them?

8:21 is referring to a SCSI device. Perhaps you need to change your
root from /dev/sdb1 to /dev/hdb1?

BTW: "Linux 5.1" doesn't make a lot of sense (Linux kernel
versions are currently in the 2.6 range). If you're
referring to the Ubuntu distribution then "Ubuntu 5.1" would
make more sense.

DVD copying

I've used the above tools to make my own DVD related scripts that
do exactly what I want. Obviously that is not what most casual
computer users want (they prefer a point and shoot UI), but I'm
certainly glad the linux tools expose that sort of flexibility.
It makes it easy for me to just drop a DVD into the media server
and have it auto-rip into the same directory that the capture card
dumps cable programs, adding it to the same PVR menus. It also
makes it easy for me to space shift shows off to DVD for later
viewing when the harddrive is getting full. I've also jiggered
things so it automatically converts disks between PAL and NTSC
formats as my girlfriend's father is from England and we sometimes
have to deal with various region codes and video formats.

All the low level stuff is obviously there on Linux, so only the
UI frosting needs a bit of work at this point, and of course the
whole patent and copyright issues need to be addressed. It seems
like Linspire is trying to assemble a properly licensed and legal
codec pack that can be used on any Linux distro, so this problem
might be addressed in the short term (though the long term solution
is still to fix the broken patent/copyright system).
