Cross-reference Words Disappear Posted: 04 May 2014 01:16 PM PDT Hi. I have Windows 7 and Word 2010. When I try to create a cross-reference I: 1. Highlight the word 2. Click Insert and Close Then . . .the highlighted word disappears. What am I doing wrong? |
Microsoft Word Paragraph Mark - Justification Breaks Words Between Lines Randomly Posted: 04 May 2014 12:48 PM PDT Working on a shared document that was returned to me. The other computer reformatted all the paragraphs and made the paragraph's sentences break at random points, mid-word between lines. I can't find a way to reformat and create a normal paragraph line break between words or at a hyphenation point. The only apparent fix is, with Display, Show All Formatting Marks on, to Cut and Paste another paragraph mark from another "clean" document over the top of the bad paragraph mark. The document is quite long so this isn't a great option. I've tried numerous things in Justification, Hyphenation, Compatibility, Layout and Paragraph without success. Attached is example of the problem with the text of the Gettysburg Address pasted into the "bad" document. |

Font and alignment changes appying to whole document, not just the highlighted part Posted: 04 May 2014 11:00 AM PDT I am trying to create an ad with a title in 18 pt text, centered, underlined, followed by a description in 14 pt, justified left, followed by my contact information. Then, I might like a pithy statement under all of it,centered in italics. I typed the whole thing first and then highlighted the lines I wanted to change. WHAT I AM GETTING: THE WHOLE DOCUMENT CHANGES SOME OF THE TIME.
Clearly, I have more control in this forum, than I do in a word document. How do I change only the part I highlight, without effecting the rest of it? |
Unwanted spacing between paragraphs Posted: 04 May 2014 10:15 AM PDT Hey I have the same problem for the last 10 years. Yes yes yes. I agree it is annoying. Please understand this. I am writing a paragraph of 10 lines. When i type the first sentence and let us say that it now goes to the next line, WORD automatically (!) creates 2 (!) spaces between that line and the next one. I want only one space betweeen lines. Very frustrating that I have no control. I want 1 space between lines, not 2 , not 3. Could you please explain in simple terms.. i have no idea what the terms you used to describe how to solve it. I turn on my computer and I type. Please be specific like, it is a blue thing at 9 o'clock etc... Thanks Lance |

macro to enter a character on a mouse click Posted: 04 May 2014 07:56 AM PDT Would it be hard to write a macro to enter a character into the document every time you clicked the mouse, and a double click would exit? I have no experience writing macros for Word, but it would be: EnterOnClick(Char) DO UNTIL double-click On single click: enter Char wherever the cursor now is, I have to annotate a file in which I have to insert hundreds of identical characters |
How do I show and hide grid lines in a table inserted in a word document? Posted: 04 May 2014 06:34 AM PDT I recently installed office 2013 replacing office 2003. I use templates with tables for home improvement contracts. Now, I can not adjust my bullets and numbers. I think it would be a good start if I could see my table grid lines. I have been to Tabs: Insert and View. |
Posted: 04 May 2014 05:30 AM PDT So I've spend long hours addressing student coursework, giving comments on their projects. They said the comments wouldn't work so I re-opened their documents and they appear to be correct. Where are all my comments gone? The actual comment boxes are still there but they are empty. This is incredibly annoying. Can I get them back or have they gone forever? Screen shot provided for reference. |

Bug in MS Word 2010 regarding Folder Naming and "Save As" command Posted: 04 May 2014 02:30 AM PDT I have discovered a bug in MS Word. It may apply to other programs as well. Here it is:
If a folder is named, "ABC; abc" (that's not the real name, but the form) the F12, "Save As" function does not work. If I open a file located in a folder in which there is a semi-colon, that messed up Word's ability to locate the folder. So when I press "F12" it will not open the folder in which the file is stored, but another folder. How it chooses this folder, I don't understand and so if one unknowingly simply saves it, it will be located in an unrelated folder. This is a bug because there is nothing that says that you can't use a semi-colon in folder name. I have added semi-colons dozens if not hundreds of times and now I see this has caused me a lot of problems. This bug should be addressed by Microsoft. |

Tried to open Word, uninstalled, reinstalled, now cannot find it ANYWHERE Posted: 04 May 2014 01:26 AM PDT Please help! I updated my laptop two days ago, I hate doing this as whenever I do something goes wrong...... I updated and hey presto.... I try to open Word, nothing. Keep getting a note saying 'cannot open file, try again later. It says to fix in settings or go online. cannot fix in settings so I go online. I see a similar problem and the solution is to uninstall and reinstall office, so I do. All this seems to go smoothly until I try to find my newly installed word, nothing, no word, office or powerpoint. I have no idea what to do, all I wanted was to type up some notes from work and ive spent an hour simply trying to open it. Thank you |

Project not viewable (macros in Word) Posted: 03 May 2014 11:36 PM PDT I get this message whenever I to to step into a macro I want to edit : "Project not viewable" Any help - very grateful. The maros themselves seem to operate ok |
Hyperlinks not working. Problem related to Default program Posted: 03 May 2014 11:34 PM PDT I get a Sorry, Page not Foundmessage every time I click on a hyperlink I have created in Word. These seems to be related to default programs as I get a momentary popup of OPenOffice. In fact I trace this problem back to the same time I temporarily changed the default opening program for wordprocessing files to OpenOffice. I've reset Word as the default program(Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs) but still get this behaviour. (only with hyperlinks it seems - not with opening regular documents). I have of course, tried restarting.

Posted: 03 May 2014 10:50 PM PDT Each time I start Word or open a Word document, a box pops up with the following: "The function you are attempting to run contains macros or content that requires macro language support. When this software was installed, you (or your administrator) chose not to install support for macros or controls. ............ This error usually occurs because of macro security settings. If you know that the macro comes from a source that you trust, you can change your macro security settings to allow you to enable the macro." It takes several taps to clear the message each time. Is there a way to get this message to stop popping up? Thanks. |
HP computers (only?) rejecting userforms Posted: 03 May 2014 09:27 PM PDT I write a lot of Word VBA add-ins and they use a lot of userforms. I think userforms are very cool and my clients pretty much all agree.
Over the years I've come across a few (very few) PCs that rejected userforms. Any add-in containing even the simplest userform would fail to load properly. Most often this threw the generic "compile error" but occasionally it was "object could not be loaded." Removing all the userforms made the add-in usable (but ever so dull). By process of elimination I confirmed it was any specific userform causing the issue. Even a blank one, with no others, would cause the error.
Today I found another such PC, and I've finally figured out the common thread. All of the PCs that rejected userform-containing add-ins were made by Hewlett-Packard.
Whaaa? Has anyone else ever seen this pattern? Is it possible, let alone kosher, for a manufacturer to omit such a basic capability from its OEM installation, thus removing the benefit of a core element of the VBA experience?
More to the point, do HP machines lack some magical DLL that could be identified and resupplied, enabling their Office installations to work as intended?
(I say 'Office,' having not yet verified whether this happens with Office programs other than Word. Seems like it'd be even more shocking if it didn't.) Thanks for any insights. Mark |
Posted: 03 May 2014 05:19 PM PDT I just made the (forced) jump, finally, from my beloved XP to 8.1 on a new laptop. I agree with a few others 8.1 is not intuitive! I am gradually figuring it out, but I write and have found that I cannot cut and paste from the books in my Kindle library (as I could easily with XP). With XP, the text transferred with all copyright data. I am using Microsoft Office 2010. From a website, no problems (yet though I see many people having that problem). No problem with text from Word file to Word file. I am not an IT person. I'm just an old guy who uses software. Could anyone tell me how to fix it in regular English? |
