Then, I try again, and I don't get error mesages. After rebooting I don't get any GUI (like KDE or Gnome), just terminal mode to login. What kind of linux is that? |

Use any text editor to do this. It might also be advisable to update the FS-type in the partition table. 'fdisk' can do this with the 't' command, but, Windows may have done this for you already. --John |

Posted: 28 Sep 2004 06:45 PM PDT Thanks for the responses, especially Peter's, which contained a bit more sass and sarcasm than I generally care for. But really, all the others were a great help. Thanks to Lew Pitcher for agreeing that it's good to not risk things you don't have to. Anyway, I have decided that once I wrap up some critical college applications and essays that I have going on, I will jump in again and boot Linux. It's just that I think it would be very bad to have to fix my computer while I have things on it that I spent a lot of time on. Of course, I could back them up (and do), but I like to work on them too. So, based on your combined suggestions and the sorry realization that Lilo is not able to do anything in Windows, I will probably redo my Linux install (shouldn't have to do it all over again), and see if it will do something nicer than last time. Thanks again, Aaron |

Using the rescue disk, try re-installing grub. After "chroot /mnt/sysimage" look at /etc/grub.conf and make sure it looks for the right partition. (You would get the "OS not found" error message if it was looking at the wrong partition.) Assuming grub.conf is correct, say "grub-install --recheck /dev/hda", and see if it works now. -- Timothy Murphy e-mail (<80k only): tim /at/ birdsnest.maths.tcd.ie tel: +353-86-2336090, +353-1-2842366 s-mail: School of Mathematics, Trinity College, Dublin 2, Ireland |
