That's why I don't like FNLT or MFO constraints. It's soooo easy to create
plans that *look* like everything is peachy when in fact it will prove
impossible to work as planned and meet the targets that have been set. It's
incredibly easy to create beautiful appearing plans that are really just
smoke and mirrors.

MSP VBA

John and Mike are right. This really is the best document on Project VBA.
After you have gone through it, I have some examples at
http://masamiki.com/project/macros.htm which show some typical operations.

The Microsoft.public.project.vba newsgroup has a number of examples too.

Is Project the right program for my needs?

Posted: 21 Jul 2004 01:32 PM PDT

I don't think you'd be very happy with MS Project in this app. Like
using a spreadsheet for a word processor. Try PunchList Manager
(www.punchlistmanager.com), it's the industry specific software you
really need here.

John,
Yes, did you read my whole response? Read the part about setting a
baseline again. That is exactly what a baseline is for. Take a look at
the Project help file and read all about baselines. If you then have
additional questions, please post again.

MS Project - Critical Path Dependant On Resources

Posted: 21 Jul 2004 04:21 AM PDT

Hi mtbtomo,

If I may step in here. You are correct in your first statement, provided
you have done nothing to upset the path. And this is one of my pet peeves
with Project! When you set up your project and assign resources without any
constraints, then the true critical path(s) will be shown from Start to
Finish. However, Project defines a task as being critical as when slack is
zero - you can get this from Tools/Options.../Calculation tab, at the bottom
where you can vary this definition. Now, when you level, Project delays
tasks with overallocated resources to remove the overallocation. It does
this by applying a value in the Levelling Delay field - try inserting this
column to see the delays (note in elapsed time eg 5edays) being applied.
Project now treats such tasks that were critical as not being so any more,
as there is a delay between the finish of its predecessor and the beginning
of the task, ie some slack, and thus is not coloured red any more. This
will continue, often up to the final task which has no delay and zero slack
running up to the Finish Date. This accounts for what you're seeing.

Because of this, if you are trying to reduce the length of the critical
path, you will have to clear levelling first, add resources to the
appropriate critical task(s) and then re-level to see the effect. If it is
not enough, you must clear levelling to see the critical path(s) again,
select other tasks, add more resources and re-level again - an iterative
procedure to meet your acceptable deadline.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: <http://www.mvps.org/project/>

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :-))

relate to the raising and distribution of an order - and nothing else can
proceed until this has happened. So these tasks are under a summary task
'Stock Order' and all further tasks relating to the completion of the order
are successors of this summary task. I would therefore expect, as it would
delay the project, that at least the longest sub task of 'Stock Order' would
be on the critical path.

everything is still reliant on 'stock Order' happening.

Physical % complete behavior?

Posted: 20 Jul 2004 04:10 PM PDT

No, that is % work complete (where work is counted in hours). Physical
percent complete is a measure of how much work is physically complete
(examples are bricks laid, miles of road paved, lines coded etc.) It should
be something measurable. Physical % complete is important for Earned Value,
but project lets you choose % complete if you wish. In either case, summary
values are not strictly necessary, but would be a nice addition.

Resource allocation within a subset

Posted: 20 Jul 2004 02:27 PM PDT

Hi Michelle,

I can see mlore clearly now, except for what exactly you mean by "I level by
work effort"
Is this Project's Resource Leveling or some routine of your own?
If it is Resource Leveling, it will do exactly as you want it to, it will
not move anything as long as there are no overallocations.

And I start wondering why your tasks do not happen the same day: they
should, if they don't YOU made them move either by constraints such as
setting a hard coded start date or by linking tasks to one another.

Try to find out how YOU moved the tasks (Project just obeys to the rules you
have set) and the problem is solved.

If you do not see what I mean, send me the file, I shall have a look.

the resources to the tasks, then level by work effort to determine the final
project end date.
Forinstance, at the beginning of the project, where there are multiple
independent tasks assigned to different resources within a high level task,
I would like the tasks to start are the same day. There is no over
allocation because the resources are different.

Local copies of server project files

Posted: 20 Jul 2004 02:27 PM PDT

Paulo --

When you are working with Project Server, then Project Web Access is the
recommended method for gathering actuals from team members. Is there no way
that you can set up Project Web Access for use by the remote team members?
Very simply, you are using the Project Server system contrary to how it is
intended to be used, which results in the problems you are seeing. Just a
thought.

Hi Mike

(Robert sorry to butt in but i also have this problem)

what i would prefer rather than the job starting at 4pm and going to
midnight (which 8eh would give me) is that the whole job is put off to the
next working day ... i manage this manually at the moment but was wondering
if i also was missing something that would allow me to make this more
automatic.

Cheers
