G'day Steve,
info is found under help / Character map

Character map can be sourced in XP from
start / all programs / accesories / system tools / character map

If you get a sheet of symbols you can use the num lock
and use for example 0169 for the copyright symbol

Adding Holidays to Works 8 Calendar

Posted: 21 Dec 2007 07:02 PM PST

The Works Calendar used to include the holidays, but more recent releases
have that feature removed.

However, because the calendar supports importing iCal files; you can do an
internet search for iCal holiday files and import that into your calendar.

Squished images

Posted: 21 Dec 2007 10:43 AM PST

Hi Robin,

I have Works Suite 2001 which includes Works Word Processor version 6.0 and
Microsoft Word version 2000.

Like you, using Works Word processor, If I just right click on the image
without highlighting it or anything and copy/paste, it comes out fine.
However, if I highlight any text along with the image, it come out squished.

It looks like your version of Works Word processor functions the same as
mine.

However, if I highlight text along with the image and paste it into
Microsoft Word it comes out okay.

I do not know why.

Ken

Adding photos to database

Posted: 19 Dec 2007 07:54 AM PST

Your consideration may include dispensing with this solution altogether,
it is hazard prone.
Make your Folder your database, eg "Home Inventory"
If you name your files with a date precursor eg "20071220 edwardian desk"
etc
they will all fall into date sequence when viewed by windows explorer,
or any image program you use.
If you save your MSWorks Home Inventory with an exclamation ! eg !Home
Inventory
the database will remain at the top of the tree, and your images below it.
You are not restrained to poor thumb images, nor by file extensions, you can
have
*.jpg sitting alongside HTML, alongside *.gif, alongside excel or anything.
Updating an image will be a breeze, and freedom will be comforting.

Works8.5 download keeps trying to install

Posted: 14 Dec 2007 02:40 AM PST

Hi Sandy,

The security update for Works 8 or Works Suite 2005
http://www.microsoft.com/products/works/international/Update_1001.mspx

has been out for some time, I do not recall others posting about problems
installing the update.

You could redownload the update or order a CD.

Either way, I would use the cleanup utilities (completely get existing Works
off the computer) , clean boot, then reinstall.

Example of how to do this can be found at...
http://support.gateway.com/s/SOFTWARE/MICROSOF/sHARED/7513181faq24.shtml

Then install the security update using clean boot procedure.

Good luck and let us know your results.

Thanks,
Ken

envelope printing in works 8

Posted: 13 Dec 2007 11:00 AM PST

I, too, am having trouble printing envelopes. I printed about a dozen, then
when I came back to print more at a later time, my envelopes shoot through
the printer with the message "Print Cancelled". I had to press OK to tell
the printer to accept the different size, but when I do that I'm now getting
the message. It worked before but not now.

I'm using a HP Officejet 6310.

Do you know if there's anything we can do to make these settings permanent?
The Integrated Windows Authentication checkbox gets checked off by default

Outlook Clients still point to old Exchange 5.5 server

Posted: 28 Feb 2006 09:05 AM PST

Here is the deal.

The old server became very unstable hardwarewise. It was decided to build a
new server and then move the mailboxes from the old one to the new one. The
old server also hosted the offline addressbook as well as a public folder,
all of which have also been moved the other server. The problem is, if we
leave the server plugged in everything works fine but as soon as we unplug it
from the network, some users are getting the 'requesting data from' the old
server. The common trend seems to be when the users are trying to access
someone else's calendar, that when they get the pop-up message.

Thanks

OK,
Its quite possible your ISP is blocking NetBIOS packets. If that's the case,
there isn't anything you can do about it.

What you are attempting to do is potential network suicide. It is totally
unsecured and will probably result in you being seriously hacked.

If you are using Exchange 2003, you should explore RPC over HTTPS

fine. Also, do I need to setup a Front end server. I will disable the ports
exposed to the internet. I just don't understand why the POP3 is working

Installing Exchange 2003 when Exchange 5.5 is Down...HELP!!!

Posted: 27 Feb 2006 07:13 AM PST

I would stop the Exchange 2003 roll out. I would get your 5.5 backup and
running. Assuming you have mailboxes on them, you currently have users
who cannot access their mailboxes. I would get the 5.5 server going and
then go back to 2003 roll out.

Just my opinion,

Yes, I am using RBLs. I didn't think about that because the sender doesn't

Probably you are right. The issue is that there is no any error.
May be our domain just blocked on senders mailserver?
What do you suggest to check? No one from our domain not complains.

Microsoft Word - Table of Contents vs Cross-Reference

Microsoft Word - Table of Contents vs Cross-Reference

Table of Contents vs Cross-Reference

Posted: 19 Feb 2014 02:59 PM PST

Hello.

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me determine which of these two would work best. I don't quite understand each one as I am not entirely familiar with either one. Let me provide some background though.

I am in the process of updating/redoing our Policies and Procedures and we are wanting to separate them based on the area (Education, Social Services, Disabilities, etc.). I did one using an Automatic Table and it seemed to work well, though it doesn't do entirely what we'd like. For each area there are multiple policies. Each policy has it's own letter assigned to it. However, my boss wants the capability for the policy # to update if we inserted one in between two letters.

For example:

Education policies are listed A-Z. We revise/add a new policy in between N and O. We now have N, --, and O. Is it possible at all to have it automatically change the policy #'s, for example N, --, and O to N, O, and P (and whatever else is after those)? Or is that not something that can be done? My boss just suggested I check into Cross-Referencing as an option instead of the Automatic Table, but I don't quite understand how it works. Any thoughts?

word doc problems with TOC/numbering and styles

Posted: 19 Feb 2014 08:33 AM PST

I have inherited a document, 100 plus pages, likely created with word 97 or 2000 and has been modified by at least 6-10 other users over the years.  The autonumbering is messed up (to put it mildly), in many sections its manually numbered, in other sections its automatic.

The TOC was generated manually, likely because the styles are also very messed up.

It appears (my guess) that previous authors tried to use styles to generate a TOC automatically, but also gave up. (Styles not implemented consistently within the document.  Before I tried to bring styles to some sort of semblance, complete paragraphs would be listed in the TOC.

I tried to modify the styles (manually modify  heading1, 2,3 etc) to be able to get auto document numbering   1.0, 1.1, 1.1.1, etc.

The numbering and styles appear to be very convoluted, despite my attempts the last three days to improve them, I've had very limited success in doing so.

I've read many tutorials, seen many pages, tried the various tips and bottom line is that they still do not play well with each other.

I even tried to start with a blank document template  and had limited success with that as well (margin formatting issues trying to cut/paste tables and diagrams from old version to new blank template)

When I apply styles, the numbering disappears at times, or numbering goes out of sequence, resorting with a restart to 1.0 or 1.1 . if I click on numbering, then the styles are eliminated and  consequently the TOC does not display that item. My choice is for some items either to display that single item in the TOC without numbering.

At times using the various tutorials and tips on various web pages such as ShaunaKellys website, I've had limited luck- it starts out fine, works for a couple of paragraphs  the a document goes from section 5.0 to 1.1 when I indent.

Can I reset styles to default or import a style format template to this document, to override the many things that were done by many different authors to this document?

Thanks

I cannot change size of footnote separator to change space on page because of influence on other pages.
I cannot insert page break because of hypenation and aligning (justify).
I tried to insert text block at the end of page to purge spare row. But unexpectedly paragraph (which is large more than 1 page) breaks page after first line
to make room for line which a push to next page by text block.
There is no "

Posted: 19 Feb 2014 01:09 AM PST

Hello,
its hard to describe. I got multiple agreement types. Every is different in only a few things, mostly are the same. I neeed to make it easy in one document, so I dont need to change one thing in eight documents, but only one.

What did I expect - I was trying to search for some checkbox usage. You have one basic template, if you select option 1 - it adds some text to some marker, if you select 2, it adds other text to some marker and so on. But this is how I was thinking about it, doesnt need to be this way.

Best reply will be, if there is any chance how to do it really easy to change text inside the agreement, because some types have same text (different than other types) so I dont need to change that one on multiple places aswell.

Thanks for your info, how to do this.

About my header problem

Posted: 18 Feb 2014 07:41 PM PST

The incorrect carryover of a Part B header to Part C happened because I did not check "make first page different" or whatever it's called. I didn't try it because I never needed it in the past, but it sort of makes sense.

Unprotect macro in Word 2003

Posted: 18 Feb 2014 06:44 PM PST

I have a document where the user fills in fields on the front page.  These fields populate the header and footer.  There are about seventy "sections" in the document - both the footer and the left side of the header are identical throughout but the right side of the header changes.  I have written a macro to print preview the document (so the user can see that the header and footer have, indeed, been populated) then to hide the fields as these are no longer required.  For this to work, I have to protect the document.  The macro works like a charm until I attempt to unprotect the document (so it can be edited).  I have tried both of the following codes (but not in the same macro!), with the same result:

ActiveDocument.Unprotect

ActiveDocument.Unprotect Password:=""

After the macro has run, I am faced with Word telling me it's updating the table of contents and do I want to update the page numbers only or the entire table.  There was no mention of any table of contents in the macro.  Because Word was so insistent on updating the table of contents, I included that in the macro.  Again, it worked like a charm until I put in the code to unprotect the document.  I was again faced with Word telling me it's updating the table of contents, with the same questions, even though it had just done that.  Yes, the document is unprotected, but I need to not be asked about updating the table of contents.

My macro is currently:

    ActiveDocument.PrintPreview
    ActiveDocument.ClosePrintPreview
    Selection.HomeKey Unit:=wdStory
    Selection.MoveDown Unit:=wdLine, Count:=2
    Selection.MoveRight Unit:=wdCharacter, Count:=2, Extend:=wdExtend
    Selection.EndKey Unit:=wdLine, Extend:=wdExtend
    Selection.MoveDown Unit:=wdLine, Count:=13, Extend:=wdExtend
    Selection.MoveRight Unit:=wdCharacter, Count:=1, Extend:=wdExtend
    With Selection.Font
        .Name = ""
        .Italic = False
        .UnderlineColor = wdColorAutomatic
        .StrikeThrough = False
        .DoubleStrikeThrough = False
        .Outline = False
        .Emboss = False
        .Shadow = False
        .Hidden = True
        .SmallCaps = False
        .AllCaps = False
        .Engrave = False
        .Superscript = False
        .Subscript = False
        .Spacing = 0
        .Scaling = 100
        .Position = 0
        .Kerning = 0
        .Animation = wdAnimationNone
    End With
    Selection.MoveRight Unit:=wdCharacter, Count:=1
    Selection.Find.ClearFormatting
    With Selection.Find
        .Text = "table of contents"
        .Replacement.Text = ""
        .Forward = True
        .Wrap = wdFindContinue
        .Format = False
        .MatchCase = False
        .MatchWholeWord = False
        .MatchWildcards = False
        .MatchSoundsLike = False
        .MatchAllWordForms = False
    End With
    Selection.Find.Execute
    Selection.MoveRight Unit:=wdCharacter, Count:=2
    Selection.Extend
    Selection.Extend
    Selection.Fields.Update
    Selection.MoveRight Unit:=wdCharacter, Count:=1
    Selection.HomeKey Unit:=wdStory
    ActiveDocument.Unprotect Password:=""
End Sub

Problem using MS Word Wildcard, bug or sth?

Posted: 18 Feb 2014 06:34 PM PST

Description:
Tick the Wildcard box in MS Word Find and Replace or Find window
>>
Perform an operation like Find StringA and Replace with StringB using Wildcard
>>
Uncheck the Wildcard box and close the Find and Replace or Find window
>>
In the Navigation Pane, type in StringC in the searchbox to perform the Find operation, then nothing happens - it won't highlight all the occurrences of StringC in both the document and the Navigation Pane headings context.

Question:
To troubleshoot, I'll have to do it the hard way by restarting Word namely closing the Word doc and opening it again. This surely doesn't make sense. There must be some quick solution or it's simply a bug?? Pls help me out!!!

Rich Text Content Control being copied in protected mode

Posted: 18 Feb 2014 05:54 PM PST

Dear Experts,

In my scenario, I have created an input form with a number of Rich Text Content Controls and the form has been protected for form filling.

Why I found unexpected is, in protected mode, if I copy all text in one content control and paste it to the other, not only the selected text, but also the content control is being pasted inside the target control.

This is serious in my scenario since the form has already been spread to whole company employees for form filling, and the data are expected to be consolidated by a consoldiation prgram, reading all input fields automatically and generate one output file. I have tested this scenario, for the field "txtEEPassportNo1", the program will wronly read the data as "60004 Passport 2" instead of "60004 Passport 1".

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Steven

I have been using Word on my new computer for about 3 weeks, and it stopped working. It just said that microsoft will let me know if they find a solution to the problem. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, and used the repair feature in the program, and it still doesn't work. What do I do?

Problems wrapping text in Word

Posted: 18 Feb 2014 05:18 PM PST

Hello,

I'm a rank amateur in Word. I'm trying to place a picture in a text box, and have the text wrap around the picture, but am encountering problems, as below:

1. In some cases, I'm able to select the various wrapping options "Square", "Tight", "Through", "In Front of Text,"  etc., but no matter which option I select, there is not affect on the text (The wrapping remains unchanged).

2. In other cases, I'm not able to select the various wrapping options (In Layout, Text Wrapping).

Many thanks in advance if anyone has any ideas to point me in the right direction.

Unable to compress images in Word 2003

Posted: 18 Feb 2014 04:37 PM PST

Hello,

All of a sudden I find I'm unable to reduce the size of a Word 2003 document by double clicking an image, selecting "compress" then reducing the resolution. The "compress" button is simply no longer there - it literally was one minute than not the next.

Another change that happened at the same time was that I can no longer remove the white space at the top of each page in print view. I'm not so bothered about this, but thought it might be significant in diagnosing the problem.

Thanks for any suggestions

John,

Is this a brand new system with nothing previously installed? The
problem you describe sometimes occurs when upgrading from a trial
edition.

I would just keep trying to activate automatically. If that works,
then great.( It won't be so time consuming as repeated attempts at
telephone activation.) If not, then take the product back since it's
not working and get a replacement copy. Hoperfully, that should "just
work".

How Do I Activate?

Posted: 24 May 2006 08:58 PM PDT

Hi Cyk,

When you use the 'Get the Beta' link on http://microsoft.com/office/preview and select which products you want to download for
evaluation you should see on the next page or two forward the product keys to use to install.

For activation, there was an issue with the servers earlier today, but should now be working.

This is pretty stupid sounding, I know, but how do I activate Office 2007? It
keeps asking for a registration key, which, obviously, I don't have. Anyone
know where to get the key or activate it some other way? >>

Malcolm,

Almost certainly not!

I'm guessing here, but did you have office 2003 in C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office? I think the Office 2007 installer will attempt
to go there by default. It should detect a conflict though.

If I'm installing two versions of Office on the same machine I install
each into a directory such as C:\Program Files\Office 10 etc. It works
for me.

I guess what you do next depends on what problems you are having.

Hi George,

To help determine the 'same error' can you tell us what th exact error message you're getting is, including the message putting a
3rd party app 'at fault' along with the steps you're following in Outlook 2007 when this occurs?

Are you opening the mail in split screen or double clicking it to its own window or??

Do all the messages where this occur have something in common (i.e. html vs plain text format, or an attachment type, or...?

Office 2007 beta 2 Setup Error

Posted: 24 May 2006 11:19 AM PDT

I uninstalled Desktop Search, it has been crashing for me several times since
I installed an update for it (may have been a beta-version) and the
installation worked perfectly!

Although I chose to uninstall previous versions of Office (2003 in my case),
it seems that it has been left intact on my computer, but I can live with a
manual uninstall.

I hope this solution works for the rest of you with the same problem.
