Project can do it, but only in custom fields. Let's say you do 4 hours on
one task in a day and 6 on another. Which task should be charged the
overtime, one or both or none? There are way too many variables and other
scenarios where Project running on a computer with an IQ of zero could never
get the Overtime correct.

You could have a blanket VBA macro that went through every day for a
nominated resource and set to overtime all hours >8. That would of course
reduce durations and then you get another round of difficulties!!

Defining a Critical Path

Adding to Mike's comment - there is a specific technical definition of the
term "critical path" in the project management world and MS Project
calculates it based on that definition. The critical path is the sequence
of tasks that determines the overall project duration. You can trace many
other pathways through the project, basing them on any criteria that you
might choose, but only the sequence of tasks with slack times of zero or
less can legitimately be called the critical path. You can choose to call
oranges "mini-basketballs" if you want to but no one else will understand
what you're talking about if you do. <grin>

In the future, please post your Project Server questions in the
microsoft.pubic.project.server newsgroup, as this newsgroup is devoted to
the Microsoft Project desktop application only. To answer your question, no
one will be able to give you an absolute answer why a project gets "stuck"
in checked out state. We recommend that you click File - Close instead of
clicking the Close button (X button) in the upper right corner of the
window, as this seems to reduce the number of times that projects get stuck.
Also, if you are using Project Server 2003, please stop asking your Project
Server administrator to check in the stuck project for you. Do it yourself
on the Project Center page, where you will find the "Check in my projects"
link near the bottom of the sidepane. Hope this helps.

The fact that the creator of the file hid some columns is just what I
suspected. I thought I explained how to see for sure what fields are in
a view, (although not necessarily displayed), but I guess not so let me
try again.

1. Activate the view you are using for the compare (e.g. Gantt Chart
view).
2. Go to View/Table/More Tables
3. In the More Tables window, you will see the active view table
highlighted. Hit "Edit"
4. In the Table Definition window that pops up review all the fields
that are shown. If a field was hidden in the view by pulling over the
vertical column separator the column width will show a "0", however that
field is still "active" and will be tested when the compare utility runs.
5. Simply "Delete Row" of any fields you do NOT want as part of the view
6. Finally, hit "OK", then "Apply" and run the compare again.

Julie, thanks for getting back with me again. I've been able to open the
Project files on my home computer, running the same version of Project.
Others at work have been able to open the files I have not been able to open.

I've done the "detect and repair" action. I've uninstalled Project and
reinstalled it. So far, no joy. Still get the blank while screen, though
the header shows the file is open and Project asks me if I want to save
changes, so it appears to be opening the file, it just won't show any of the
data in the file on the laptop.

I don't know of any new software that has been installed since I last opened
a Project file successfully. I keep the system updated with Windows and
Office updates; those are all that I know that have gone on to the system
recently.

Hello,

Trying to help someone they were doing a  word document and went back to it. They have had this computer for quite a while and has Office 2007.

Upon opening the document, it started asking for the key. They have used this for quite a while and had bought it from Best Buy.  I was thinking though

it would be doubtful that it would be in the registry, and if searched maybe I could find it? The other thing I was thinking of was to restore it to an earlier

date though I am not sure that would help?

They are elderly and don't remember having a disc with it, and they took it to Best Buy which couldn't help them out

Any suggestions?

Page numbering when starting a new section break

Hi everyone:

I am working on a book where I have a one-page Introduction that starts at roman numeral, iii, and then the Foreword which I want to start at roman numeral iv. 

There is a blank page between these two sections, which I need in there, and it appears that I've sectioned this area properly. Section 1 (odd) is a blank page, Section 2 is the Introduction page (even), and Section 3 (odd) is the Foreword page. The roman numeral have to be this way; otherwise, the Index page numbers in the back of the book will be off.

Here's the problem. When I try and change to roman numeral iv on the Foreword page using "Format Page number, then "Start at", it puts in the right roman numeral, turns the roman numeral to iv on the Introduction page, and it adds another page, which throws my whole document off. Now it shows the Introduction as odd, then the Foreword as odd. My "link to previous" if off.

Why is it doing this, and there still seems to be a link, even though I've shut the link button off.

Any advice?

Compile Error Message

When I open MS Word I see an Error Message 'Compile Error in hidden module: AZ Wizard Module'.  This is my second attempt to remove it.  All of the

posted answers seem to be out of date.  In Word Startup>Options>Add-Ins I see 'AVWiz14s.dotm listed as a template, but I cannot remove it. I recently installed Avery's Program to get a template in Word and my problem began.  I have uninstalled Avery, but it did not help.  How can I remove that Compile Error Message from my computer?

How to detect what version of Word is running using VBA

Dear all

I am experiencing persistent crashes when I use the Selection.Range.Relocate wdRelocateDown (or wdRelocateUp) method in Word 2013.  I have read on another forum that this is an acknowledged problem and that whilst the wdRelocateDown (and Up) methods work beautifully in Word 2010 and 2003, the Application.Run "OutlineMoveDown" (or Up) method is needed in the 2013 version of Word.

Now, the template that holds my macros could be opened in either Word 2013, 2010 or 2003.  Therefore I need the code snippet that will tell me what version of Word is opening the template.  Knowing the version I can then construct the macros to run the appropriate method as described above.  I'm sure the method of detecting what version of Word is running using VBA is awfully simple but I haven't been able to track it down, hence my appeal to the wisdom of the Community.  Thanks in anticipation of your assistance again.

How to Bold specific parts of text document automatically.

Hello,

I have a document that has time codes spread throughout the text. The only thing common between them is the format that is [hh:mm:ss]. The hh, mm and ss values are variable.

I need all these time codes to be bold formatted.

Replace function does a great job in formatting the same text throughout the sheet, but I can't find any function that allows me to do that for formats or masks. Like if I could somehow program it to embolden everywhere [ ] occurs and everything in between.

Was hoping if someone could help me out with it.

Font default issue - 21/3/15

When using "MS Word" document, in the menu bar above, the letter font and

 font size always shows "Calibri" and size "11" as default. I want the default to be"Times New Roman" and font size "12" as default. I changed it many times but it still reverts back to "Calibri" with "11" whenever I open up MS Word document. How to resolve this.********

word 2003 still works well for me. but suddenly I can't print out word documents. instead I get a small symbol of an open book at the bottom of the page with an X on the right hand page. the printer works fine. I can print all kinds of stuff off the internet. but suddenly not word documents. any ideas on how to fix this?

Currently, Word opens in Print view. I prefer to work in Draft view.

 I asked this question in another forum and was told to go to advanced options and check "Allow opening a document in draft view,"  and to then save the document.  

I did this. However, it did not work.   Documents still open in Print view.

Can I make it so that whenever I open a Word 2013 document, it opens in Draft view? 

Office 2013 caption for figures has same numbering

I am writing my thesis in microsoft word 2013. I have assigned "Heading 4" to the chapter number, "Heading 2" to the Section and "Heading 3" to the subsection.

I have three figures under the three separate subsections in a chapter. I have inserted a caption for each figure. I have enabled the "Include chapter number" tick box and pointed the chapter number to "Heading 4". All the figure captions are labelled "figure 1.1" instead of having the labels "figure 1.1", "figure 1.2" and "figure 1.3." What could be the possible reason for this?

I have noticed that if all the figures are under the same subsection and then I insert the captions I get the labels "figure 1.1", "figure 1.2" and "figure 1.3.". But when they are in different subsections, they have the same label i.e. "figure 1.1".

Adding Independent vertical & horizontal lines to a page (not connectors)

Oh my gosh, Is it really that difficult? All I am trying to do is add additional arrows to this flow chart. Every time I do that it moves the other arrows off the page. I don't think I want to use a connector I have no need to do that. All I want are independent arrows that I can place. I do not understand the layout options, positions functions. I have tried using every option there is, alignment, absolute, lock anchor.  Can someone please give me detailed instructions. I have looked for instructions and I am just not getting it. I also used the freeform shape for my lines, but there seems to be some connectivity to it. I just want independent rectangles, arrows that I can place where I want them. Please help and I am glad it is Friday!!!

Please understand that this is not only a simple workaround. An additional
entity makes sense because you almost ever need additional data.

This entity could have a name like "Registration" or "Participation" with
additional properties like registrationdate, studentprice or state.

Such integration should be possible because Small Business Accounting uses a
SQL Server (MSDE) instance named MICROSOFTSMLBIZ.

A good developer should create a simple integration between SBA and CRM in 3
days.

location and some common keys (like the database location). installing both
would end up with both pointing to the same database.

Yep it is intergrated. Sql server complains of (null) logon.

I have given up with this issue and will now be performing a
re-install.

I have looked through dozens of related posts, nothing seems to help.

One other quick question, I have set the services to auto start however when
the pc is re-started the services are not startin for msde, and they are set

However, I did a diff on the present web.config and the one in the last
backup and found out that someone had added an authorization element setting
<deny users="?">. Not sure why this was done, but once I removed it, things
worked fine.

I don't know why this modification would cause this behaviour, especially
from just my machine, as we're not allowing anonymous access anyhow.

Thanks, Dan. This got me pointed in the right direction. Turns out there's
a registry setting

that was preventing the connection. Adding the path allowed the connection.

Thanks everyone for all the great information but I tried several macros offered here in WORD 2010 and not one of them did anything at all.  I think it was 4 macros that I tried in total.

I also copied and used the macro Sub NukeStyleNotInDocument() but I got an error message:

"Compile error:  Syntax error.  OK Help"

Also in Word 2010 I can only see the Char or Corrupt Styles in the Find What, Find Styles window and nowhere else can I see them and I mean nowhere else?  In Word 2003 Char styles or Corrupt Styles used to appear in a different place and so it is like the corrupt styles are still there but now hidden under the Find What, Find Styles window but I do not know why it is like this either?

I used to have this problem all fixed with two great macros in Word 2003 but they no longer work in Word 2010 and so I feel that this problem has not yet been resolved for me in Word 2010.

Has anyone else tried the macros in a corrupt styles Word 2010 document?  If so, which macro or steps worked for you in Word 2010?

Can't Keep Endnotes from Starting on Next Page

I have a 321 page document with 22 chapters.  Each chapter is set up to be its own section.  The chapters end with an Odd Page Section Break.  The Endnotes are set to "End of Section."  For many but not all of the chapters/sections, the Endnotes start on the next page, even though there is more than enough space to have the endnotes begin immediately after the text (as opposed to on the next page).

This is adding two, mostly blank pages to the end of the chapters this is happening in.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

First of all sorry for my English. In my word document I insert the list of items from Mail Merge code. For example i have 35 items which can be listed on a single page through Mail Merge code. When I reach 35th item, automatically page break applies and add a blank page. Although it should go to next page when the items list exceeded the page limit. How can I remove the hidden Break which I didnt insert and coming when the Mail Merge code insert the data. Any help will be appreciated.

Word 2013 Header Questions

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read my post.  I'm trying to figure out how to manipulate some data.  Hopefully these screenshots will highlight what I want to do.

In the screenshot above you will see what things look like:

1:  This is the header.  I just applied a shading color so you could see it stand out.

2:  This is the actual header.

3:  A textbox over the header.

I'm trying to do exactly what you see in the screenshot.  I have no idea how the background is colored and filled like that in #2.  When I create the header, I can use a shade to color it and stretch it to where I want it.  However, I can't drag the textbox over the header.  Word won't let me.  It will only let me place the textbox below the header.

I totally agree. It's ridiculous how terribly difficult Word is to use. I don't want to just rant about it; I've been using Word for as long as I can remember, but it's so much more trouble than it's worth. I sincerely wish that there was another program I could use that could do what I want it to and also be compatible in my line of work.

So I have a document that is upward from 300 pages. I'm having trouble with the page numbers. I've been scrolling through page after page online. Asked tech support. Even called Microsoft for assistance--they did the remote access and all of that... the guy I spoke to spewed a bunch of tech jargon and basically told me he couldn't fix the page numbers unless I paid whatever sum he asked for.

I've followed everyone's advice. I've done the paragraph thing to check for page breaks. There were none. No page breaks were inserted in the document. Spaces and paragraphs and tabs... I even ran the macros to check... None. I did the Alt, Shift, P... I did the Alt F9... There are no new sections, but I tried them anyway. When I did this I was really excited because I thought it was working. I got down to about an 8th of the document before the pages started messing up again. It was just one page off so I thought it'd be simple to correct. I followed the instructions just like I had before and instead of working, it sent me back to the top of the document and all of the numbers were off again! Imagine my frustration! I'm sure you can't. I actually tried this about seven times, trying different variations. Trying to do the same thing slightly different each time. Nothing.

I have a deadline. I really have to finish this document. I really can't fathom why it wouldn't work. Honestly. It is one document. No page breaks, no sections. Page one to page 300whatever and yet the page numbers do not work.

I really sincerely hope someone here can help me because I am going grey here. No one seems to understand why it is not working.

I have a company I work with that will send me quotes from time to time. EVERY time I receive their "Word" quote, it appears to be in e-mail editing mode. The "To", "cc", & subject lines are at the top just below the ribbon. It gets VERY irritating because it eats up so much window space. I cannot find how to get rid of this.

It will not let me right click, drag, or anything.

Word tables - Overlapping footer and strange compression

It is doing two strange things:

at the bottom of the page, it overlaps the footer

when editing and I add extra lines, instead of funding webpage break it is automatically, it compresses the table lines over each other. See below.

Hello! I'm fairly new to macros, and I've spent the better part of this morning trying to find a solution to my problem. I work with documents that range between 20 to 500+ pages in Word 2010. I've been trying to make a macro that will find all 2 or more alphanumeric text between parentheses, and then paste them into a new document. I've tried recording my steps, while using the Advanced Find feature, but when I run the macro, a window pops up and tells me "This method or property is not available because no text is selected." For some reason, manually doing the steps while recording allowed for the results that I needed, just not as a macro.

I'd like to add that I work on a very limited system, or at least limited capability even though I'm using Word 2010 on Windows 7. We are restricted from doing/viewing many things while here at work, so I had to type in my code manually below; I couldn't paste it in or use (or even see) any options to insert my code separately.

I have followed the discussions, but they address files that have been on OneDrive. Mine are simply random Word files. Arbitrarily, Word decides that a file has to be protected (I changed none of the settings) and I cannot edit and save the file.

Yes, I know I can give it a different name, but it is very annoying to be locked out of a file that you created on this computer...and now you cannot edit it.

Track changes, but not text highlights. Possible?

Auto capitalization in table in Word for iPad

does anyone know how to switch off auto caps in tables created in word for iPad? Even tables created in Word for PC with deactivated auto caps are ignored in word for iPad everting will apear with an inital capital letter. iOS settings fir capitalization are off too.
