DSL Gateway: ping test problem

Maybe, is it necessary to launch a specific command in order to update
the system state after a network configuration (I say, after
ifconfig-ing and route-ing)?
Another stupid question (forgive me, please!): I noticed that rebooting
the system loses my network configuration: how can I avoid this volatile
behavior (I imagine there's some tweak to be made in /etc ...)?

I expressly disabled DHCP (see below).

Here it is:

Ethernet interface:
Description. . . . . . . . . . . . . . : NIC Fast Ethernet PCI
Realtek RTL8139 Family
Physical address . . . . . . . . . . . : 00-11-2F-CD-9B-14
DHCP enabled . . . . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP address . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2
Subnet mask. . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers. . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 193.70.152.15
193.70.152.25

Yes, I was.
Initially I tried to directly access a web page over the internet, but
when I had no server response I went to bash for my dotted-quad ping
tests (subject of this thread).

Sl-o-o-o-o-o-w Performance of Nautilus Graphical File Manager in FC2

Richard Vaughn wrote:

Yes. Disable nautilus: it's a notorious CPU pig and system resource waster.
Unfortunately, a bunch of other tools rely on its libraries, so it's safer
to move the binary aside to "nautilus.disabled" than simply to remove the
RPM.

Secondly, have you done all the system updates for FC2? And why in the name
of all goodness are you still running FC2, which is now deprecated? You can
still get updates from www.fedoralegacy.org for FC2 if you need them, but
I'd definitely update.

Thirdly, if you have a bunch of NFS/SMB/etc. network drives mounted, and any
of them is currently unavailable, lots of programs have problems accessing
such drives, especially when they're mounted as "/whatever" and certain
operations do a stat operation on the root of your file system, and have to
wait for the attempt to access that mountpoint to fail.

I'm not sure if any of these will help you, but they're a starting point.

HI,
have you checked the range of IP addresses defined in the
/etc/dhcpd.conf file..
if you are using linux machine at client side , use "dhclient" command
to reconfigure it.
Log messages will be created in the /var/log/messages.and
/var/lib/dhcp/dhcpd.leases at server side..and for client it will be
dhclient.leases.Also Check with the switch it may also blocking the
request from client..

perhaps not with the new fc4 kernel. The problem was intermittent, so
I will wait and see.

Other posters have asked about the output of "fdisk -l". Part of your
disk space may be unusable, not because of the 1024 cylinder limit, but
because you have four primary partitions, and the unused space is not
adjacent to the extended partition. As a quick fix you might back up
any important data, delete your extended partition, and make a new
extended partition of the unallocated space.

Sam? FC2 is deprecated now, for fairly good reasons.

If you hit "Ctrl-Alt-F1", do you get a working terminal session? And did you
get all the FC2 updates, say by using "yum update"?

Installing Linux from within Linux?

In comp.os.linux.setup Jules <this.yahoo.co.uk>:

Yep, done this numerous times, you could use a kernel + initrd
offering a minimal system and then blow an image over the LAN
onto the box. Alternatively, (no image), you could try putting the
install kernel + initrd onto the system boot from that and do a
network installation.

yeah, you have to do that for any new installation of MySQL (and I've
had to do that on every Linux distribution and Solaris distribution I've
installed MySQL on). RTFM (almost) always works. The keyword might be
"installed;" perhaps some distributions do you a "big favor" and execute
mysql_install_db for you, but neither Slackware or Solaris do so you
don't have to have it if you don't want it, maybe.

boxes for letters: finding a font

I was hoping that determining font dependencies would be as standard as
ldd for library dep.

Here's the os stuff:
Zipslack (current ver i think)
Linux version 2.4.31 according to /proc/version ,June 5 2005. (I dnld
this in Jan 2006, direct from the Slackware webpage)

http://www.slackware.com/zipslack/

$LANG=en_US
Opera 8.52

Weird thing is, I can go to the font section of preferences (ctrl-f12)
and select various fonts for dialogs and such, and select the same
fonts for the menu, and the menu font size and shape will change, but
stays boxes, while all else in opera has viewable fonts.
