I am trying to get rid of the header and footer on my two pages that consist of the table of contents. The layout of my document is as follows: Cover page, Table of contents (spans over two pages) then the body of my document starts on page 3. Currently what is happening is when I update my table of contents, it automatically brings back the header that is applied throughout my document. I don't want the header and footer on the two pages that I am using for my table of contents. I want the header and footer to start on page #4. I have tried creating breaks and everything. Any help please. Thank you.

Word 2010 Heading/footer wanted only on first page

I am creating a newsletter with a header and footer on the first page.  I do not want the header and footer to be shown on following pages.  I just want it shown on the first page.  I clicked on the Odd and Even page but the header and footer appeared on the 3rd page.  How can I turn off headers and footers for all subsequent pages?

Hi Guys,

Need help on inserting paragraph marks before/after a table in MS Word.

When I click on the end of the table and pres enter, it just creates another cell rather than moving to a new paragraph. How can I stop that from happening?

How to add one pdf page to another pdf file?

I have two scanned documents, one I need to insert into the other to make them one document. Re-printing is not an option.... help! There must be a way to insert a page and not a blank one? I have tried opening both documents as word documents, but it still does not give me access to insert already created pages.

I would make transcribing songs I write to my notation easier.

I don't get the error when I have the web browser open.  Word 2010 seems to have a problem opening the web browser, Internet Explorer.  Is there a way to correct this problem?  thank you

Underlining In a Word Table

I will admit that I am not very good at Word. I am much better in Excel. If this is a basic question I apologize in advance.

I am inserting a table in a Word document. In some of the cells I would like to have underlining appear across the entire bottom of the cell regardless of how wide the column that contains that cell becomes. This underlining could be either a single or double underline. Can someone explain how to do that?

Word document protection

I know how to protect a document but I want to have some options for the person viewing it.

What I am creating is a form. It contains questions with select-able options for answers and comment boxes. I can currently lock the form so they can only fill out the form BUT I also want them to be able to highlight the questions and remarks and copy them to their clipboard to be reattached in their own document if desired. 

I just don't want the questions to be changed. only answered and copied to a clipboard WITHOUT the password to unlock the form.

Bug in TOC?

Good afternoon all!  I am hoping someone can assist me with a TOC formatting question.  I have special styles for the headings in a document that I am working in, and I only want those headings to show up in the document.  They are Noble Style 1, Noble Style 2, and Noble Style 3.  When I go to create the TOC, I click on options to change the styles to be these instead of the default Headings 1, 2, and 3.  I also modify the TOC 1, TOC 2, and TOC 3 so the formatting is the correct version.  But, when I click on okay to create the TOC, the formatting is not correct (specifically for TOC2) and when I go back into the "Options" area, Headings 1, 2, and 3 have been reverted back to TOC levels 1, 2, 3 respectively.  The Noble Styles 1, 2, 3 are also listed as TOC levels 1, 2, and 3, respectively.  How can I keep the Headings from defaulting back, and make sure the TOC formats correctly.  I have deleted the TOC and started over numerous times.

Word 2013 (on my Surface) is often incorrect in its assessment of my "it's" and "its" use. (Word puts a blue squiggly line under a correctly used form.) Yet, my word 2007, on another computer, is accurate in its "it's/its" assessment. Annoying. Can I remove "its/it's" from being checked on the Surface?

I am having a similar error.. 

In my office most all our reports are based off of one template, When I open the template blank I don't see this error, however after saving and re-opening it with new data I receive this error..

Most of the time I'm able to recover the file without any noticeable data loss, however I would like to kill this bug so it's no longer a problem.

I tried the solution Girish M. suggested Here but that seems to be the solution for a different problem..

Just downloaded Office 2013 (including WORD) and I have the usual complaint.  Is there somewhere you can turn off all the bells and whistles???  I just want to type using my own methods - space bar, tab, etc.  My biggest pet peeve is when doing an outline.  It keeps wanting to "help" and set it up for me.  Also, making spaces between words and paragraphs.  Is there somewhere where you can just shut everything down and use it like a typewriter, adding what you want, not adding what they THINK you want??

Why should I digitally sign my macros?

Hi,

I have created a certificate, placed it in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities folder, and signed my macro project with it. Since the code will be distributed within my company, security by means of a digital certificate has been asked for.

I tested this on a virtual machine on my laptop. The macro security settings in Word are set to "Disable all macros except digitally signed macros". But when I load the template with the macros, the notification bar appears, stating that my macros have been disabled. This is not the case when I put the template in a trusted location.

I messed with the project's code, and a message box popped up that forced me to choose between not saving the template, or removing the digital signature. Yes! I chose the latter. After restarting Word, however, the macro runs smoothly with no warning whatsoever - this is of course due to the trusted location. It would be nice if in this case "Disable all macros except digitally signed macros" somehow had priority, but no.

Two questions (of which A is by far the most important):
A: What do I gain by having my code signed?

B: When I wanted to sign my code again, my certificate was not shown any longer. Why is that?

I read all the posts, and I must be an idiot. Can somebody write a numbered step-by-step process for what I would like in my business plan?

I have 25 pages:

  • Cover page (pg. 1, no page # needed)
  • Table of contents (pg 2-3, no # needed)
  • Mission statement (pg. 4, roman numeral I needed)
  • Executive summary (pg. 5-6, roman numerals II-III needed)
  • Business plan (pg. 7-21, page # 1-15 needed)
  • Appendixes (pg. 22-25, roman numerals I-IV needed)

Can somebody help me out? 

How to have numbers display as currency values in Word table?

Gentlefolk;

I have a Word table which is in a document that is driven by a series of macros, given to me by macropod.

This works wonderfully for what I need, but I would like to have the numbers entered into a Word table cell to be displayed as dollar values.

For example, "125" would be displayed as "$125". In this case there is no benefit to having trailing decimal and zeros ($125.00). The numbers I am dealing with are large enough that the cents would just get in the way.

Word tables don't have this format built in, so I need a simple VBA script, or an equivalent solution.

So far, my Googling has not helped at the level I need assistance.

Microsoft Office Suggestion

Hi,

I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but the thought just occurred to me, and yes this could be a random suggestion to most but why not incorporate a fail safe with Microsoft Office when it comes to saving files. 

I can't even remember how many times I spent a lot of time working on a project on for example Microsoft Word and then exiting accidentally when clicking "Don't save" instead of "Save". What I'm trying to get at is wouldn't it be better to just send that unsaved file to the Recycle Bin rather than just completely wiping it off your system, then if you really wanted to deleted you did the usual and just remove all items from the Bin?

Just a thought, and an idea that would hopefully be implemented into the future updates.

Omit TOC page number for certain Heading styles

Fellow sufferers!

I want certain heading styles to simply not show the page number in the TOC. This is because anyway they appear on the same page or two pages, because they are at a very low level. It will be easier to read the TOC if only 1., 1.1, and 1.1.1 levels have a ".................................34" page indication, but not e.g. 1.1.1.1.1.

Please help me, it will be great if you can!!

If ... then ... else statement inserting a Merge Field

I want to create a mail merge document that inserts data when the merge field is "Not Blank" and inserts a line of text when the merge field is blank.

Specifically, in the Rules setting's "If... then... else" option, I wish to set it up as:

If <<Email>> is not blank

Then, insert this text:  <<Email>>

Else, insert this text:  "Not known"

I do not know how to format the "Then" text to insert a data field rather than simple text.   Any advice?

Microsoft Word 2010 not spell checking

I have read about 20 posts now, and I cant seem to fix my problem.  My Word 2010 seemed to have stopped spell checking.  It is still grammar checking, but not spell checking.

This is a problem, as English is not my first language.

I have checked all the right boxes and set the proofing language, but nothing seems to be working.

Locking the layout when creating a fillable form in Word 2010

I have created a fillable form using Word 2010s "developer" tab. 

Is there a way to lock the spacing of the forms text so that when I type into a field, it doesn't move the other information around it?

For example:

First Name:  click to add text      Last Name:  click to add text

When I click next to "Fist Name" and type in the name, I want the spacing between "First Name" and "Last Name" to remain the same.  Right now, when I start typing, "Last Name" moves left and then is pushed right as I type.  

To SAFELY edit a Word's embedding Excel component INDEPENDENTLY from Word

Hello,

I have a Microsoft Word 2013 (.docs) document with a couple of Embedded Excel components that are editable from within the Word.

The issue is that working with those Embedded Excel components is a heavy task for my PC and I see it gets slow. As a workaround, I changed the Word file extention (.docx) to Zip file (.zip); and then I could access those embedded Excel components as individual files from within the zip file at the folder "word\embeddings" without the need to open my Word document.

I am asking whether it is SAFE to unzip these Excel files and edit them directly through Excel and then to zip them back to their original folder.

Your opinions about the safety of this practice, any improvement, or any idea to work with those embedded Excel components independently from the Word file are very WELCOME and would be HELPFUL.

Can Word 2013 put footnotes underneath a column?

I am working on a trifold brochure and want to insert a footnote that stays with the column I'm working in. Instead of dropping the footnote to the far left of the page, I want it to be under the column the footnote is marked in. How can I accomplish this? This was automatic in the opensource app I was using, but seems nearly impossible to figure out in Word. Thanks to anyone who can help!

Word Web App Page Breaks

Word Web App does not display automatically generated page breaks. Thus, making editing a document almost impossible. Thus, making Word Web App completely useless to me or anyone else who desires to get any editing of a document accomplished.

Is there a way to display pagination in the editing view without having to save every single line and guess where the page break is and go back to reading view only to find out that you are two or three lines off?

Is it possible to copy the file where the preferences are stored and apply it to a different computer without having to enter the program and manually fill them in? And if so, what is the name of the file, and in which directory can I find it?

Microsoft Office 2013 - Tabstopp in Header line

Hi,

I am just preparing the layout of my bachelor thesis using Office 2013 and stumbled on the first step.

I wanted to create a header line on a new document, containing the chapter title and the page number on the right corner.

In Office 2010 i used to change the format of the header line and set one tabstopp to 16cm (right justified) for the chapters title - and another one  and 17,5cm for the page number.

Here's what it looks like in Word 2010:

When trying the exact same in Word 2013 it totally messes up the format:

The preview on Word 2010 and Word 2013 are exactly the same - but the result on the page differs. On Word 2013 it seems to wrap the line on the pages right corner.

Funny workaround: Saving an empty document in Word 2010 and open it in Word 2013 enables 2013 to format just like 2010.

Do you know if that's a bug or a feature?

I tried Word for a while. I could not find anything I liked in it. I have been using Corel WordPerfect for a very long time and will stick with that. I also worried that MS wants too much of my computer online. I hope others feel like I do.

SharePoint Metadata and Microsoft Word (Office 365)

We have a SharePoint document library.  In this library, there is a custom content type which is a Word file that has about 7 properties.  2 of the properties are drop down lists.  When you create a new document from the library with this content type, it opens the document panel at the top of Word and shows these 7 properties to fill out.  Nothing out of the ordinary there...

We have a single user (so far) who after being upgraded to Office 365 ProPlus can only choose one of the first 12 or so entries from 2 of the drop down in this property panel.  If she tries to click on any values lower down in the list, it does nothing...as if she hadn't even clicked an option.  We have updated her to the latest version of Office 365 (15.0.4569.1508) which made no difference.  We also had her try performing an 'Online Repair' of Microsoft Office 365.  Same result.

Anyone else ever seen this?  Suggestions?

We are running an A-P cluster and are running OWA ssl. I would like to use
forms based authentication but is grayed out and Microsoft says that they do
not support it. It then says that we need to use a FE server.

So if I make my server a FE-BE server this would solve my issue and would
allow me to use the forms based instead of having a pop-up for login
purposes.

What my main goal is, is to get my users to use a login web page instead of
a pop up. It justs looks more professional.

How do you mean? I have set the Sender-ID service to reject messages that
fail validation, forcing the sending server to generate an NDR. I have
added my Exchange server to the list of servers that handle incoming mail
messages. My server my ISPs relay server are the only servers that handles
incoming SMTP messages for my organisation and I have added both to the list
on the Message Delivery General tab. What more do I need to do, apart from
enabling it on the SMTP virtual server which I had done but have had to
disable because of a problem I am having.

In fact, I was a bit quick. I didn't mean unistall/reinstall IIS, but simply
reset the default virtual directories that are required to provide Outlook
Web Access, Exchange ActiveSync, and Outlook Mobile Access services in
Exchange Server 2003 - which is not quite the same thing...
I am sorry for the misunderstanding - but thanks for the link on
reinstalling Exchange which could be quite useful...

Since I have already added all the user accounts to AD via the NT4 upgrade,
do I skip the account and group migration process and go straight to the ACL
migration and active directory connector to move the mailboxes? I would like
to use both 5.5 and 03 at the same time during the move day. Also, will I be
"moving" or "Copying" the mailboxes?

I write technical documents that have lots of cross-references, to Tables, Figures, Appendices, etc. Lately, many of my clients are asking to have them (the cross-references) be colored blue, I suppose because that makes one realize they are hyperlinks. I can't find a field switch for the REF field that would let me do that automatically as I create them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Office 2013- disable ability to editing of PDF files?

We recently installed Office 2013 in the office and some people would prefer to turn off or disable the ability of Word, Excel, etc. to be able to edit PDFs.  There is concern users can easily edit any pdf distributed to the business.  Can you turn off the that feature for all users in the enterprise?

onAction macros do not show up in Macros Window

Word 2013 on Windows 8.1

I added 4 custom buttons to the Quick Access Toolbar, which are linked to 4 VBA macros. While everything works fine, the 4 macros do not show up in the Ribbon - View - Macros window as soon as I add the parameter (control As IRibbonControl) to the Sub definition, although they are correctly displayed in the Visual Basic Editor as well as in Organizer's left window. If I remove (control As IRibbonControl), the macros reappear in the Macros Window - but they no longer work from the buttons!

Should I change any parameter or setting? Does it 'work as designed'? Or is it a SW error?

SharePoint Metadata and Microsoft Word (Office 365)

We have a SharePoint document library.  In this library, there is a custom content type which is a Word file that has about 7 properties.  2 of the properties are drop down lists.  When you create a new document from the library with this content type, it opens the document panel at the top of Word and shows these 7 properties to fill out.  Nothing out of the ordinary there...

We have a single user (so far) who after being upgraded to Office 365 ProPlus can only choose one of the first 12 or so entries from 2 of the drop down in this property panel.  If she tries to click on any values lower down in the list, it does nothing...as if she hadn't even clicked an option.  We have updated her to the latest version of Office 365 (15.0.4569.1508) which made no difference.  We also had her try performing an 'Online Repair' of Microsoft Office 365.  Same result.

Anyone else ever seen this?  Suggestions?

Whenever I try to open Microsoft Word or Powerpoint I get a message saying "Something went wrong. We couldn't start your program. Please try starting it again. If it won't start, try repairing Office from 'programs and features' in the control panel."

Suddenly I was not able to open Office, not a new document in word or the ones I already have. When I try to open word it says:

"something went wrong". And when I tried to fix it in the control panel nothing changed, and it said error code 30102-13.

It hasn't been any other changes to my computer and i bought both the comupter and Office in the fall of 2013.

Hello,

I'm using an ASUS PU500CA with Windows 8.1. I have posted a question about bluetooth problems a few days ago (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-hardware/windows-81-cannot-connect-to-bluetooth-and-usb/3d8f86a4-6f44-4f07-acfe-2ef0c11465ff). The computer worked well since then, but today, another error appears and it seems much more annoying.

+) Some programs become "not responding" after opened. For example, when I open Words 2013, I can still type in or read the documents, but if I tried to print it or change the Page Setup, it crashes immediately. I have no choice but stop it by Task Manager. The same with PowerPoint and Excel. It's even worse in Adobe Photoshop CC, everytimes I try to create a new file, it crashes.

I have searched in the Community and found out that many have rather similar problems of Office 2013 and I have tried some solutions. It's not because of the plug-in because I disabled them all but no use.

+) Another possible cause I have found is the default printer so I went to "devices and printers" to change the default printer but once again, I cannot even open it. The Control Panel crashes immediately when I click at "devices and printers". Well, it seems the systems tries to prevent me from fixing the error =.=!

+) Once again, the computer cannot recognize any USB or SD card I plugged in. Fortunately, I can still use the bluetooth mouse, not like the previous time. I have to restart the computer with these devices plugged in so that I can read the USB or the card.


Review Pane Opens Automatically When Document Is Opened - Word 2013

Word Always Recalculates Some Cross-References but Not Others with Track Changes On

I've experienced this on multiple documents but finally decided to ask.

Many of our documents have cross-references to Headings using Heading Text. With Track Changes On, when we recalculate the entire document (e.g. to refresh page numbers), some but not all of the referenced headings also indicate a change. Even though they did not change. It happens on specific headings every time and wastes a lot of time to review what changed or not.

Any suggestions on how to fix this so that it doesn't recur? Thanks.

It appears that the Spanish grammar checking tries to work, but fails on simple grammar mistakes.  For example, this is incorrect: nosotros es in la patio. grammar checker finds that la patio is incorrect and suggests: el patio.  Spell check determines that in is wrong and suggests en. However, es is wrong, should be estamos. This is basic Spanish grammar and if Word can't catch this--what good is it???

Wrong page number after the use of columns

I am currently writing a document containing quite a lot of text, a long with some formulas. In order to comment these formulas, I wanted to split some parts of different pages. A marked the text that I wanted to have split up and went to the "Page Setup" group, before i clicked"Columns" and choose the two columns option in the list. Then I suddenly saw how the page number started to count over again on the next page. I tried to select the footer, right click the wrong number, click "Format page number" and choose "Continue from previous section. This did scroll the document up one page, but did not fix the problem. What do I do?

I tried to search for it on Google and the forum, but did not find any solutions which were relevant or actually helped.

Changes happened to default picture object wrapping style "In line with text"?

Are there changes happened to default picture object wrapping style "In line with text"?  In Word 2010 we were able to insert pictures made by our own applications into a word document and we could edit (double click) the picture object (which contains embedded data, it can also be linked to our application) in WORD itself. The default picture object wrapping style was, and is still, 'In line with text', but it seems the internals of this option have changed in the sense that, we are not able to edit our picture object anymore in WORD itself. Trying to edit the picture opens our intermediate application which is the link between WORD and our main application. The strange thing is, when we choose for the default wrapping style something different than 'In line with text' we get back the old (word2010) behavior. What's more, in powerpoint 2013 everything seems to work fine with the 'in line with text' setting. We can not work around this problem with the default copy/paste wrapping style setting which is available in WORD, as the insert of our picture objects into WORD do not use the regular copy paste commands, so they have no effect here.

I hope there is an explanation to this problem.

Paint only heading text, not the index

Fellow sufferers!

I have some headings that look like this:

ii       Bangladesh

iii      Hungary

In this text, I want to highlight ALL country names with a colour (using the paint bucket icon) like if I had used a Faber-Castell text liner. It is a document about countries, so the highlighting makes it easier to read (at least I believe so :-))) )

My problem is, the "ii" and the "iii" get marked as well, all the way to the country name. The same happens in the TOC.

How can I limit the colouring to just the country name in the above examples?

If you can help me, it will be a great great help!

Present thoughts and negetive number in Word 2010

I have 2 questions in Microsoft Word.

1.How do I automatically present thoughts with comma? 
Ex. 1000 will automatically presented as 1,000

2. how do I automatically present negative numbers in brackets. 
Ex. -1,000 would be presented as (1,000).

I know there is a way throw formula but it's for one number and it's long. and since i need to delete the $ sign from the formula pattern. 
I'm looking for an automatic way to do this, if not maybe a keybord suortcut to change numbers like -2000 to (2,000).

The above are true type fonts. Sent to me via windows mail but unfortunately, these cannot be saved in the fonts folder. Error comes up saying that the file format is not compatible. This has worked on my wife's computer but fails to open on my one. Please advise how can I make the words folder recognise the ttf file formats?

hyperlinks in a word doc

I use word 2007 on win7.

I have a document saved on SharePoint.

I have created internal hyperlinks in my doc (to another part of the document).

Whenever I click them, word wants to open the doc again from SP and will not direct me to the actual place in my document.

I have tried restart, didn't work.

Word gives error on opening

I have been having some recent problems with Microsoft office 2013, Word in particular. None of the programs would open and i was encouraged to uninstall and re install, having done so all of my products now work again, with the exception of Word. 

Every time i try to open word i receive a message that says "were sorry, but word has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly. word will need to be closed as a result. Would you like us to repair it now" i then click repair now the box goes away but my word is not repaired

It does not give me an error code simply the text in italics above 

Can anyone help me with this problem

options under tabs in word

I recently installed Microsoft Office 2013.  I am trying to do a project in word.  When I click on the options, all of the different tabs appear.  However, when I click on an tab, all of the options are gray and I am unable to open them to start my project.  Specifically, I want to use the label option under mailings.

like having incorrect envoronment. (LANG, LC_ALL).
 

It is not clear if ls thinks the utf chars are non-printable, or if it
is the terminal program that does not know what to do with them.

I would like to spy a little, but "ls | od" is not good, because
ls behaves differently when the stdout is not a terminal. Use the
command "script":

"script" will capture your keypresses as seen by the shell.
 

There are stages:

1. You reboot, kernel starts "init". This program has no initial environment. It sets a few
variables like RUNLEVEL.
2. "init" starts "prefdm". This is a shell script, but it does not load and .bashrc.
It does, however, source /etc/profile.d/lang.sh
3. prefdm starts kdm. I don't know how many steps are involved here. I think is starts
X and a program to display a login screen. This program returns a username, and
kdm runs a session manager, makes it owned by the user, and gives it an initial
envoronment, including, I think, HOME. The session manager is responsible for
setting up the session programs, starting the window manager, the panel, and all
the other programs that are needed to run a desktop. I don't know what environment
e.g. the panel program gets.
4. The panel or the window manager starts Konsole. Konsole inherits an environment from
the program that starts it.
5. Konsole starts a shell, possibly as a "login" shell, certainly as an interactive shell.
This determines what files the shell sources. See man bash, section INVOCATION.
The files are /etc/profile, ~/.bash_profile, ~/.bash_login, ~/.profile, or ~/.bashrc.

The point is that when you run "env" you see the envoronment that the shell sets up after
reading these files. Konsole has a different environment. However, you can find out
what environment running programs are seeing, using

with the appropriate process id instead of "1234".

XLookupString gives 2 bytes: (c3 a6) "æ"

that is, XlookupString should return two bytes, not one. (I don't know how the
"ae" character displays in your news reader or browser, on my screen it is the
standard Danish/Norwegian ligature.)

Check what is in the environment of the xev program! It's this program
that runs the XlookupString function and gets a single character instead of two.
 

Been there, all forgotten. Repeatedly. Each time, started over afresh. Arghh.

When you find the origin of the problem, you have probably changed a few things
that were actually correct, and you may fail to realise that you have found it.
Double arghhh.
