Microsoft Works 7 Works Word Files - Database Confusion/Corruption

Posted: 07 Jan 2006 08:25 AM PST

Thanks for the replies, Ken and Debra, sorry if I did not make it clear that
I was dealing with Works Word the whole time. I won't be able to let you know
whether your kind directions will solve the problem until late on Monday as I
will not be accessing the computer suite again till that time. But I will be
printing off your instructions to take with me.

My only reservation about this is how a student learner could inadvertently
(and with this particular learner there is a low probability of deliberate
tampering) have changed the folder options (in relation to file extensions)
as the problem had not occured previously. Which is why I was leaning towards
the "corruption" angle. Anyhow, I will get back to you with this one.

Thanks again for the speedy and informative replies.

Are you using Works Word Processor or Word if you have Works Suite?

How to download to works

Posted: 05 Jan 2006 11:03 PM PST

Hi Thom,

Files have extension, they are the last three characters of a file name such
as .doc, .jpg, .htm, .gif that lets a Windows based computer know what the
file type is (word document, excel document, graphic, etc.)

In your case the extension of the downloaded e-mail attachment is associated
with WordPad.

By default "Hide extensions for known file types" is checked. In case you
do not see the extension of your files, lets uncheck it. I unchecked mine
long ago.

Go to the Control panel and double click Folder Options, or open My
Documents, choose Tools on the menu bar, then choose Folder Options on it's
menu, either way opens the Folder Options dialog popup.

In the Folders Option dialog, choose the View tab, uncheck "Hide extensions
for known file types", click OK.

The following is one way to change the program that open a file.

First you need to save the downloaded e-mail attachment to a folder if you
have not done so already.

Locate the attachment, then right click it, choose Properties.

On the Properties dialog popup, select the General tab, under Opens with:
click Change. (takes some time for the next dialog popup to display).

In the Open with dialog popup, locate and select the Microsoft Word
Processor you want to use, click OK.

Note: This change affects all files that have the same file name extension
as the file you selected. For example, if you change the program that opens
a .doc file, all .doc files will open in the new program.

When opening the attachment it should now open in the Word program you
selected.

I am on a WindowsMe operating system, Windows XP should have the same popup
dialogs I described.

By the way, if you want to view all the extensions on your system, go to
Folder Options and select the File Types tab.

Hope this helps,
Ken

PLEASE HELP! Printing problem using Works 8.0 & Labels

Posted: 05 Jan 2006 11:02 AM PST

Hi,

Your first problem was only one label on a 30 label sheet prints out.

Now you say it is the same problem, except you write, "tried to import some
labels I previously printed out with no problems, but when it came time for
Works to import the fields, the box disappeared and went back to the
microsoft works 8.0 selections page (ie: documents, labels, envelopes,
etc.)"

Doesn't sound like the same problem to me.

My first thought was perhaps there might be a printer software problem.
Works uses the printer software for many functions.

As you did not have similar problem displaying print preview in other modes
except labels, assumed printer software is okay.

My next thought was perhaps the .cvs file might be corrupt. thus my
suggestion to try a different data source.

If you are sure the data sources are okay, then I do not know what the
problem is.

You could try following these instruction to use the cleanup utilities.
http://support.gateway.com/s/SOFTWARE/MICROSOF/sHARED/7513181faq24.shtml

Good luck,
Ken

Works 2003- "Word"

Posted: 04 Jan 2006 12:00 PM PST

Hi lees,

The cleanup utilities solve most problems.

I am not sure why, when inserting Suite 2003 disk, it does not run.

Suggest, after inserting disk choose Start on the desktop, on it's menu
choose My Computer

Locate and right click the drive with Suite 2003 disk, then choose Explore.

Can't get Works 7.0 calendar file to work with Works 8.0

Posted: 03 Jan 2006 10:44 PM PST

Hi ToBo,

My calendar (Works 6.0) goes back to early 2003 and it's mswkscal.wcd data
file size is 2.34 MB.

It probably would be larger except for the crash I had then and learned from
this news group to back up the mswkscal.wcd data file. Remember to backup
yours.

Reaction to things I click on in the calendar or even when opening is almost
instantaneous.

If you think there is a problem with Works causing response time you might
try doing another power-down, if that doesn't help, perhaps a clean install
using the cleanup utilities, instruction can be found here....
http://support.gateway.com/s/SOFTWARE/MICROSOF/sHARED/7513181faq24.shtml

Programs running in the background can cause slowness, more info about
background programs can be found here.
http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/

There are other calendars available, some in this news group like the Free
ClickTray calendar http://www.waseo.de/articles.php?lng=en&pg=34

PS: Thanks for the compliment, and no, I do not work for Microsoft.

I have Works 4.5a, and it was purchased in Australia, so I'm wondering
about this:

"Note The Wp2krtf.exe text converter is only available for the U.S.

from:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=246566

but I can only give it a try.

Okay. There aren't many WDB files, but heaps of WKS files. I'm
wondering if Works can be run from a DOS shell ? Of course, I may get
the 'can only be run in windows' message, but my thinking was, if I
can parse parameters to wrks, from a DOS .bat file, to emulate the WKS
conversion, then maybe it can all be done in batch mode ?

I do know to use a WKS in Excel,, you open the file in Works, save it
as XLS, and the conversion is good, no data lost.

Thanks,

Peter

Activation is anonymous, to add a username would sort of
defeat that :)

The MS Partner's Action Pack is a special edition,
supported through the MS Partner folks.
MS Action Pack for Office has 5 retail product licenses,
each supporting two activations.
Action pack copies are for internal use only

Yea but what if you have a retail copy or in my case a MS Action Pack version
and every time i reinstall it or move it from machine to machine for what
ever reason (still staying within the licensing of course) i have to call MS
for activation, sure it only takes 5 min (now that i figured out you can use
the key pad and not mess with the voice rec) but thats 5 min u have to spend
doing it. I like that idea, have a way to "un-activate", maybe have a
username and password or something to allow someone to do that... >>

Hi Bill,

Unfortunately the CD Edition and the

have to match. The update download works
with all of the editions but the CDs aren't
interchangeable.

If you don't have the matching CD you can uninstall
the one listed, restart the PC then install from the
edition you do have, but, as with any revision to the
PC environment set a restore point and backup your
files first.

Take out the disk do this in a different laptop or PC with
brackets for 2.5" drives.
Partition the drive into two partitions.

You can do a Knoppix compressed disk install.
This is just under 700Mb.
(You have to google the faqs on how to do that.
Come back if you get stuck.)
The compressed image will boot if you have 128Mb RAM
and autoconfigure for your laptop every time.

Now you can put disk back to the original
laptop, do boot up again, and then do the full
knoppix install to another partition while installed
in the Fujitsu laptop. This way you don't have to
worry about setting up all the configuration files
for knoppix. Also, if your knoppix install gets broken,
you can always boot with the compressed knoppix
and re-install again. I would also use it for backing
up the non-compressed partitions through the network.

bootloader on dual boot system doesn't show linux

Posted: 03 Jan 2005 12:13 AM PST

hi!
i am a new user of linux and had gone through the same agony coz i
couldnot say bye bye to windoz and had to keep both the os together.
Always keep in mind order of installing the operating systems is from
low to hi, by this i mean first install win 95, win 98 win 2000 and
then linux, you will never end up in these problems.
This is how it worked out for me in Red Hat 9.0
Use ur installation cds to login as root; you will have to use chroot.
Now if you want to load grub on mbr then in your case you will give the
following command in the shell
/sbin/grub-install /dev/hda (good for 2k and xp)
and in case you want to install at a non mbr location then use
following
/sbin/grub-install /dev/hda2
you may try both if one doesn't work other will.
Grub works great but you like to look at other third party boot loaders
like Boot Magic and boot commander etc

Dump it. Use vsftpd, it's lighter weight and has better configuration
options..

And if you're going to dump in FC3 versions of software, you often need to
recompile them for RedHat 9 due to changes in glibc, just as you are
encountering. Either make the jumpt to FC3, or be ready to recompile
packages like that.

Well, yes. Do not try to do such major changes of your software as a major
glibc revision without updating the whole software installation.

Don't. Making a major change in glibc, is like switching from gasoline to
diesel fuel, it's usually easier to get a new car.

the high paging rate (even with X and whatever desktop -- Enlightenment?

other 128Meg Ram stick came in, I installed it, but it made little
difference, less than 2 pages per second, sometimes much less.

I did not research that. I gave the machine away. I now am down to two
machines, and that is enough. When that box ran RHL 6, it worked fine with
64 Meg RAM. When running RHL 9, it was too slow even when the excess
paging was cured with 256 Meg RAM.

Fine if that is your hobby, or if someone is paying you. I have work to do
and did not want to waste the time.

Help with my NVidia GeForce 5700...

Posted: 02 Jan 2005 10:02 AM PST

"Michael Perry" <org> wrote in message
news:org...

See previous discussion about this.

1: What it is installing is a kernel hook to handle their binaries. This
kernel hook "taints" the kernel, and makes it no longer GPL, which is why
vendors don't ship it with Linux distributions.

2: It replaces your OpenGL libraries with binary-only libraries that support
Nvidia's undocumented, closed source features. This breaks any upgrade path
for your OpenGL libraries, and breaks a number of applications that were
compiled with the standard OpenGL libraries.

3: When you update your kernel or build a custom kernel, you will need to
re-install your NVidia drivers.

4: You have to integrate the NVidia support into your X configuration files
by hand.

If your time is worth more than $20/hour to you, trade the card for a recent
ATI card with a friend and use that instead. I'm exhausted with NVidia's
behavior about this, and trying to maintain it in the face of all the
different ways of managing kernels.

How do I prevent overallocation of a resource for tasks < 0.5day

Posted: 22 Nov 2004 08:45 AM PST

Hi Jonathan,

You must have Automatic leveling on with the day as granularity.
When you have the two tasks leveling will not see any overallocation on the
day because there is nout more tahn a day's work.
The 200% peak units only exist in the morning.
A third task will create an overallocation and leveling will push it into
the next day.

You can avoid this by taking a lower granularity in Leveling (hour or
minute)
My advice on top of that is that you read all about leveling especially when
you have automatic leveling in.

IIf([% Complete]<>"100",IIf([Finish]-[Baseline Finish]>7,"over

which compares (and returns text) based on the difference between finish &
baseline finish. You can use the text outputted by this formula (modified

Project 2000 Large Format Printing

Posted: 19 Nov 2004 03:01 PM PST

it sounds to me as if the gantt chart to be displayed is "naturally" about
11 pages wide, by 0.5 page high.

This is quite common - the width is dictated by the column widths + the
gantt timescale, while the height is dictated by the number of tasks & the
fonts used.

When you select "fit to 1 page tall by 1 wide", MSProject simply scales the
chart to fit on the page. In your case, this means that the chart will be
about 1/11th the original size (to fit the 11 pages wide onto a single
page). Project keeps the height+width in proportion, so the height will also
be scaled to 1/11th its original size - that's why it ends up about 1/22nd
page height.

The main thing you can do is to adjust the timescale of the gantt to be more
compact or show less time, that way the chart will have width-to-height
proportions more like your paper proportions, so any scaling will be more
likely to fill the entire page (even if its been scaled so much that text is
unreadable).

Hope this helps

Those who know can't tell.

However, looking at history you can see some pattern of release history for
Project and Office in general. At least since 2000 they have been released
on similar schedules.

You can also expect Project to follow the GUI changes which Office uses. As
for actual scheduling features, you will have to wait until they make some
sort of public announcement.

How to export a MS project 2000 into MS project 95?

Posted: 18 Nov 2004 06:13 PM PST

Urgotera,
Gerard already provided the answer but if you do not have Project 98 I
will translate the file for you. If you would like me to do that, zip
the Project 2000 file and send it to me via e-mail. If it is not corrupt
I will translate so that Project 4.x (i.e. Project 95/97) can open it.
Keep in mind however that some data may be lost since Project 2000 has
more fields and features than the older versions.

Opening Project Server projects

Posted: 18 Nov 2004 02:50 PM PST

Steve --

If your Project Server administrator has set permissions to allow you to
publish non-enterprise projects, then yes, the projects will be visible in
PWA and you can see the data in the MSP_WEB_PROJECTS table. However, you
cannot see the projects in the Open from Project Server dialog because you
never SAVED the projects in the Project Server database. You have started
down the wrong path with this tool, my friend. The correct process for
using Project Server is:

1. Open Microsoft Project and log into Project Server with Project Manager
permissions or higher
2. Create a project
3. Click File - Save and save the project in the Project Server database
4. Publish the project using Collaborate - Publish - All Information

If you follow the above steps, you can see the project in both Microsoft
Project and PWA. To correct your problem, I would recommend that you ask
your Project Server administrator to delete any non-enterprise projects from
the Project Server database, and also disallow the permission to publish
non-enterprise projects. Next, I would recommend that you follow these
steps:

1. Open Microsoft Project and log into Project Server with Project Manager
permissions or higher
2. Click Tools - Enterprise Options - Import Project to Enterprise
3. Using the Import Project wizard, locate the first .mpp project and
import it into the Project Server database
4. Pay special attention to the page on matching local resources with
enterprise resources
5. Repeat this process for every .mpp project

To answer your last question, you open the Enterprise Global and Enterprise
Resource Pool by doing the following:

1. Open Microsoft Project and log into Project Server with administrator
permissions
2. Click Tools - Enterprise Options
3. Select either Open Enterprise Global or Open Enterprise Resource Pool

Because of your foundational misunderstandings about Project Server, I would
recommend that you consider purchasing our company's books on Project Server
2003 by clicking the URL in my signature block. Hope this helps.
