Usage Monitoring

you'll probably find the IIS logs are turned on by default.
you can find the logs in this directory

C:\WINNT\system32\LogFiles\W3SVC1

Typically the web server creates a new log file each day.
In my case i had over a years worth of log files so how the heck to analyse
them?

Easy..I wrote a 30 line excel vba macro that opens up each logfile and then
reads each line and updates a spreadsheet. The end result is that I have a
list of users and the number of times they have access and also the date of
their last access.

Note the count of user accesses is telling me that they connected to crm for
count one, then opened an opportunity form then opened a lead form. In this
case this would equal 3 accesses.

Our MSCRM left and I cant get in

Posted: 25 Feb 2004 10:31 AM PST

Brad

there is an issue where the crmsecurityservice relies on SQL and needs to
wait for SQL to start before starting itself

to stop this happening open a command prompt on the crm server and go into
the directory

c:\program files\microsoft crm\server\bin
then run this command line

crmsecurityservice -r s

Posted: 25 Feb 2004 08:48 AM PST

Hi Karen,
Just thought I'd add my bit of experience here, as an end user who has
bought and installed MSCRM without any assistance from a 3rd party
consultant. We are in Zurich Switzerland and desperately needed to replace
ACT as our contact management application. We needed something scalable,
robust and that integrated with Outlook.
After a couple of months of research and testing of other solutions, both
cheap and very expensive, I decided to opt for Microsoft's offering. Being a
Microsoft house in terms of end user and recently having upgraded our
infrastructure to Server 2003, Exchange 2003 and Office 2003, it seemed the
obvious choice.
I was able to download CRM 1.2 through our license agreement with Microsoft
and set it up in a test environment.
Many of the dealers in Switzerland were unable to give me any useful
information so doing this myself was the only answer and it was definitely a
useful experience.
Providing you have all the prerequisites done (follow the deployment manual
and you can't go wrong) installing the server was fairly straight forward
and took just over an hour including SQL Server.
I had to do this very quickly indeed and we had our production server
installed and ACT data migrated in just one weekend. Ok, I only have 15
users, but these users are all Marketing people who have very specific (so
they tell me) needs and being able to customise CRM on the fly is of great
help. I don't need to shut everything down each time I change a form or
create a view. We also have users who are spread out globally (Geneva,
Stockholm and New York), who connect via VPN and we will be including some
of our Partners giving them access via the Internet. This requires something
very robust and secure MS CRM can meet these needs with ease.

Having said that however, there are 2 major shortcomings that our users have
found particularly annoying about MSCRM, this is from users used to the
openness and ease of use of ACT.
1. No facility to include an attachment in a Direct Mail message. Creating a
normal email activity means you cannot send an email with an attachment to a
list with more than 100 contacts, you have to do this 100 contacts at a
time.
2. You cannot customise any of the Activities views. I'm sure this is
possible through the SDK but no one has yet to tell me how.

Version 2.0 is slated to be coming towards the end of the year and as a
customer we are in a position to suggest what can be included in the new
version, but for now we are making do.

Being .NET and reasonably open MSCRM can easily be integrated into other
systems and we will be looking at how Web Services can be used to allow us
to copy contact data into our Oracle system, whilst using Oracle Web
Services to be able to view our product performance data from within CRM.

Another very positive note, is that when you purchase MS CRM, you get an
excellent support package directly from Microsoft and I have been making
full use of this. It includes access to an extensive and very useful
Knowledge base.

I hope this helps and enlightens you.

Paul

Hi Rich, either users can use the "Regarding" field to associate the email
with the case, or, instead of having your form redirect right away, do this:

1) Have your form create a new email, using the CRM SDK, and associated the
email with the Case ID that is passed to your form from the case form.
2) After your form has created the email, bave your form redirect to the CRM
email form, passing the ID of the new email.

The user will then be able to edit and send the newly created email.

Error login with user distinct to Administrator

Posted: 25 Feb 2004 07:34 AM PST

Hi Mike, thank you for your quick answer.

Well, in the System event log appears (it is in spanish):
Error KDC
"Hay múltples cuentas con el nombre HTTP/portcticrm.portcrm.com de
tipo DS_SERVICE_PRINCIPAL_NAME"

In english it sounds like (I think so...)
KDC Error
"There are several acounts with the name HTTP/portcticrm.portcrm.com
of type DS_SERVICE_PRINCIPAL_NAME"

I'm thinking about a error related with DNS, but I'm not sure and I
don't know how I can test it.

Thanks.

How to delete (not disable, but DELETE) a user from the user list?

Posted: 25 Feb 2004 05:03 AM PST

That's because the system does not allow you to delete a user. It
would be nice to have this ability for a user that does not own any
data, but for now, you are forced to disable.

You could try to manually delete the appropriate record out of the
SystemUserBase table, but this could cause you problems down the road
that are unforseen (and is not supported). If you try this route,
first remove the license & roles from the user from with MSCRM.

Based on my experience, the only way to get around this is to create users in the AD of the domain where CRM is installed and force them to login using the DOMAIN\User method. This is how our people connect from afar or when they are on their home machines.

Sales for Outlook 1.2 Install

Posted: 24 Feb 2004 02:58 PM PST

Erik,

I just noticed a prior post that I didn't try.... when specifying the
crmIsapi.dll, copy that dll to your C:\ root, regsvr32 it, then map to
c:\crmIsapi.dll and it worked for me!!! Fixed a few problems too!! I wasn't
sure if I needed the SRF mapping in anything other than MSCRMServices, so I
set it for the Microsoft CRM 1.2 Site Properties, and it made the change in
MSCRMServices too....

Hope you get it resolved.

Loading MS CRM in FRAME / IFRAME

Posted: 24 Feb 2004 07:14 AM PST

Technically, yes I could probably do that, but it wouldn't do much for
solving my problem... I'm trying to get it running in a frame so that
CRM is just one component of a suite of components that can be loaded
into the main frame from my app. My app has a toolbar always on top,
loading original and 3rd party web-based apps into the main frame.
I've gone through all the accessible Javascript and modified it to run
the my frame... unfortunatly, some of the CRM buttons and such are
..NET controls that are already compiled, so I cant change the
Javascript for those. Its too bad, because I was so close to getting
this done. Anybody have the source code to MS CRM? :)

How disable text boxes that pop-up in the Style pane?

Posted: 22 Feb 2013 08:26 AM PST

Hello!
How can I disable the (large) text boxes that pop-up when hovering over each Style in the Style pane?
(Those relatively large boxes cover adjacent styles and make it very difficult to use the Style pane in an efficient manner.)
I've searched through the Word options but found nothing that appears to address this. Is there some hack to do, e.g. in the Windows Registry or elsewhere?
Thanks!

Task with NO end date

Posted: 22 May 2004 04:46 PM PDT

I think what you are trying to do is what Project does
pretty well.
Suggest the following steps:
- create a methodology for your writing tasks
eg Initiate, Plan , Execute, Close phase/summary- each
with a few tasks therein.. You are the world expert on
this. But keep it simple.
- for each job you will bring (paste) in this template
and populate under each phase as required. Just use one
file at this stage.
- all tasks within the template should be set As Soon As
Possible, except the job start task, which you can hard-
code
- Each job will be its own network with its internal
dependencies, and a completion milestone
- Set all tasks to Fixed Work which YOU will perform. Set
tasks for others to perfom as Fixed Duration, but I
suggest you don't resource these tasks. Perhaps indicate
who is responsible in the task name.
- In your Gantt chart Right Click and Select gridlines,
Current Date, and select a color to clearly show current
date on the Gantt
- Set up your barstyles to show % complete to the Summary
level for each job.
- Update progress on tasks regularly (weekly) and re-
schedule those that you haven't completed.
Golden Rule : is that there should be no incomplete tasks
to the left of the current data line. Don't be bashful, if
you haven't completed it, re-schedule it!! This is the key.
You then have an operational plan, and something current
to work with, and Project can help you set your priorities.
If you get these basics right, then you will be using
Project proactively, and then its many benefits will
become apparent as the schedule unfolds.
If you like email me at com and I will send
a .mpt file set up for you to get started.

Printing a blank a page with no number showing

Posted: 22 Feb 2013 10:57 AM PST

I am using Word 2010. I am printing a blank page with no number showing

First, I have the hidden formatted characters showing and I do not see two consecutive page breaks.

Here is the sequence:

- an automatic 3 page TOC with the last page printing only a few lines at the top.

After the last TOC I inserted a Section Break (New page) because I wanted on start a new number series on the next page.

In the footer I can see the correct page number ix.

What appears to be the next page is fine with the number 1.

So all looks good, BUT when I create a pdf file I get blank no number page between ix and 1.

When I do  Print command to see the Print preview, I see the print counter for the ix page as 11.  When and i scroll down in print preview, I see the blank page with the overall page number on the print counter shows as 13.   It shows no print counter for page 12.

Whew, I hope you understand this because I had a difficulty explaining why I keep getting a blank page betwee page ix and page 1.

Automated Method of Removing Read Only Recommended Option from Document Repository - Word 2007

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 05:56 PM PST

We are running Word 2007, Windows 7 Enterprise Sp1 2 Bit.  We have a document management system Opentext Hummingbird DM 5.2.  Years ago someone set the Read Only Recommended check box when we had Word 2002 on a subset of form documents. Up until recently, the users were able to work with the documents as they received a prompt when they opened the document which allowed them to ignore the Read Only option. Now with some of the recent versions of our DM users are no longer prompted with the option to say Yes or No to the read only option, instead the document opens Read Only.  They have to perform a Save as, cancel the document management profile screen, save the document locally, click the Tools, General Options and uncheck the Read Only Recommended option and import the document back into our document management system.  I am looking for a way to search through a document repository to find the Read Only Recommended option in the Word documents, uncheck the option and save the document back in an automated fashion?  Please note, this is not a Read Only option on the file.  This is the Read Only Recommended option you see when you go to save a document and click the Tools menu, General Options.

HI: In Microsoft Office University 2010, using WORD. Right about the BLUE "FILE" Box Tab, there is a few small icons. One of which when you hold your mouse over one of them, it  shows "SAVES", and saves the work you have just done. I know you can hit "FILE" and brings up the 'area's of which you want to do, such as, save. HOWEVER, when you 'hover' over the smaller icon and SAVE your work, how can you make sure that it is SAVED. Does microsoft have a 'sound' for this so that you can 'hear' it and be rest assured that it is SAVED.

opening Word causes Office configuration

Posted: 20 Feb 2013 01:34 PM PST

Whenever I open my MS Word program, I get a screen that says "Please wait while Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 is configured. Configuration Progress...configuring Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007."  Then MS Word is opened and operates normally.

I have already tried the following to no avail:

1) Opened Control Panel, Programs and Features, Selected Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007, Selected Change, Selected "Repair" for Change your installation of Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007.  Repaired MS Office Enterprise 2007.  Rebooted computer.

2) MS Word, Word Options, Resources: Ran Microsoft Office Diagnostics - Diagnostics run: 5, Diagnostices that identified problems: 0, and Diagnostices that took corrective actions: 0.

The problem is recent and occures upon each try to open MS Word.  I have run Office 2007 without incident for over two years.

MS Excel, MS Access and MS Outlook open without any issues.

Please help to change it back to inches

Thank you very much.

Problems with saving new files from another programme into Word 2010.

Posted: 19 Feb 2013 04:55 PM PST

Can someone assist with this problem please? I have reposted from Word banter.

Background to this post. ... I had a lot of help from this site with setting up macro but at the time it was beyond me. It was too advanced and I cannot take a concept and re-apply a different fix. I apologise and thank everyone for their help.  It is extremely difficult for me to work with the macro concept given that a lot of the information is old and I cant do it without screenshots. It is not my main task to become an expert in Word but just to do this one thing. Doug Robbins kindly wrote up a code for me  based on my docuument  to change my footnotes from superscript and I paid to have someone show me how to install it step by step using screenshots. I was lucky to find someone to do this. I  was using it for some time but forgot my programme that uses charts is saved into word. This has created a new problem for me. I was warned it would be a permanent fix and svaed my new macro in global template. end of background to this post.

NEW POST

I will have to do this post in stages because I know what is happening but need to sort out this problem first.

I made a new footnote macro and saved it in Word global template. It was working fine but then it didn't because of another programme that uses Word to open some charts is using the same template. I forgot about this programme when I set a global template and I have just started using it again. I made some mistakes and couldnt even close the files without saving it. I really didnt know what to do.

When I want to just file this programme it is fine and get saves as a Word Doc. However when I close it I get the message "this file is in use by another application or user C:\users\AppData…normal.dotm. I press Ok and it opens a window to save it to templates. The file name is normal. But this thropws up other messages.

What do I save it to, "Word Macro enabled template"? If I choose Word document I get a message that" it cannot be saved in a macro free document. dot VBA project." ( I know this refers to visual basic) I am then asked to save it to a macro enabled file type in the drop down menu or continue to save it as a macro free document. If I don't save it then word closes down or shows it is closing down but actually doesn't . After trying it again just now I just got a message that it is "a read only" document. If I save it to a macro template I stell get errors and I have a stack of normal templates in the "roaming files".

I will be using the charts a lot from now on. I knew how to change the normal template in earlier versions but hadnt used macros before.

What should I try and save it in please? I have written down a variety of messages I get and not all the same. What is the best process of handing these charts please?

Or does the answer lay in changing the global template. I believe this may be a permanent fix.If it is gloabal template should I repost my question.

Stefan I went to the link you gave me http://word.mvps.org but I really couldn't relate to much of it as the ribbon was different and I couldn't recreate the same ribbon. So without this I couldn't follow this.

I didnt want to jump ahead to far but the macro is still there and no longer working.  Can someone  you please explain this using "dummy language" and/or is it possible to send screenshots as an attachment

I was taken to tak for not litening to you before but I really tried to follow your advice but it was beyond my skill level.  and didnt hep because the information I was gien was old. Stephan acknowledged this and showed me additional code but by then I was thouroughly confused and stressed. I am now moths behind in my project so would apprecialte your assistance.

kind regards.

mailmerge pulling in blank rows from excel source file

Posted: 19 Feb 2013 09:33 AM PST

Hi guys, I'm hoping someone can help me out.

I've got a word mailmerge tied to an excel source file.  Everything has ran well for the past 6 months with everything until now.  I'm running into a problem where the mailmerge is creating extra records that are blank.  The source file (I've confirmed this is correct) has only 20 rows of data.  I've gone as far as highlighting the rows complete to the end of the book, right click, and deleting the rows complete and saving prior to retrying the process, (not just hitting the delete key to clear data).

But I'm still creating 1000 records that word wants to send emails for where only 20 exist.

How do I get the mailmerge to pull just the active rows and no more?

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Office 2013 apps won't load

Posted: 19 Feb 2013 07:27 AM PST

Loaded Office 365 and have Office 2013 icons on my start page, but they won't run. When I click on any of them, the wait cursor appears for a few seconds then stops. If I start run as administrator, I get the UAC message, then the wait cursor, then nothing. I watched in task manager and could see the UAC window load, but there was never a process for the Office 2013 app. This is true for all of them, Word, Excel, Access, Power Point.

I also tried putting a shortcut to Word 2013 on the desktop and dragging a Word document to it. Nothing. I was able to install Office 2010 and it seems to be working, but I paid for the use of 2013, and I would like to use it. I need Access.

Just another frustration with Microsoft's latest version of ME.

Changing administrator rights on for Word 2013

MS Word header styles are showing black boxes instead of numbers--how can I fix this?

Posted: 17 Feb 2013 12:18 PM PST

I modified the default headers for a large document. They looked fine when I set them up, but after I saved the document and came back to it, some of the outline numbering showed up as black boxes. The instructions for setting up list styles was very confusing. I had particular trouble selecting the multilevel outlining--it keeps going back to the default setting.
