Hi Danielle,

Also, some of the reports are also available in the "Save As... ->Excel"
feature. If the one you want is not available, use the "New Map" feature
and model something that is very similar to the report you want.

progress during non-working times

Posted: 05 May 2004 11:51 AM PDT

Gerard's answer gave one approach. Another that I favour is to show the
Saturday work as 10 hours of Actual Overtime Work on the date it was done,
entered using the Resource Usage view. I think the calendar should show the
scheduled work time of the resource only and work performed outside of those
times is posted as overtime work, regardless of whether the resource is
actually entitled to premium OT pay or not. In line with that, to get the
costs to come out right I recommend that people who do not get premium pay
have their overtime rate entered using the same value as their regular rate
so those Saturday hours don't show up as freebies in the budget (some users
and most courseware say to set the OT rate to zero for managers and
professionals who don't actually get extra overtime pay but I don't think
that approach gives an accurate estimate of the true costs.) He's gonna get
paid for 'em, whether directly or indirectly, by taking a little "mental
health comp time" off when his schedule allows.

Without the 1 it gives Mon thru Fri as 4 days, not 5.

Outlook tasks. However, if using the Outlook calendar is acceptable to your
client, then you can import tasks quite easily. From PWA, download the
Outlook add-in. It's a simple install. Then use the "Import New
Assignments" button on the PWA toolbar from Outlook. I suggest you change
the import timeframe from internet options, PWA tab. Don't use the PWA
range; use a more narrow range.

Licensing Issue

Posted: 04 May 2004 04:54 PM PDT

You have a couple of options. You do need a license for every copy of
Project installed and I may be wrong but I don't think there is a way to
install a single copy on a central shared server and open it from different
workstations (probably would violate the EULA in any case). Like Office,
you will need a license for each workstation. As you describe it, if you go
with Project Standard you'll need at least 25 copies of Project, 25
licenses, since there is no way to open and view project files without it.
Another route would be 5 licenses and send or post reports and views saved
as PDF file "electronic hard-copy" to the people who only need view access.
OR, you could go with 5 copies of Project Professional (Standard doesn't
talk to Server- that's the basic difference between the two versions) for
the PM's actually modifying the project plans, Project Server as the
distribution medium (remember it also requires Windows Server, IIS, SQL
Server, etc) and Project Web Access with enough CALs for the other 20 who
need to view the plans.

Hope this helps

hourly billed resources

Posted: 04 May 2004 04:26 PM PDT

Very good advice, and I thank you

I plan on using Project in the way you indicate - to prepare the initial budget, but in terms of tracking actual time, we have a separate application that individuals will enter their time in, and at the end of the project, we'll only bill what is agreed initially. (unless it goes out of scope of course)

----- Steve House wrote: ----

The resource assignment percentage is essentially the amount of time ove
the duration of the task that the resource actually works on it, expresse
as a percentage. If the task duration is 16 hours (2 days) and the resourc
devotes 4 man-hours of work to it over that time period, his assignmen
percentage is 4/16 or 25%. There are a variety of ways you can enter that
either mentally calculate the percentage and assign at that level or spli
the screen and specify duration and work and let Project calculate th
percentage

FYI - IMHO it is an extremely bad idea to use your billing fees as the rate
for the resources. MS Project tracks your internal costs - labour
materials, etc - to create the project deliverables, not the revenues i
might generate (if any), and the budget developed in MSP will reflect thos
internal costs to do the project's work. Consider the situation where wor
is done that is necessary to complete the project. work you have to pa
people to do, but for some reason is not billable to the client. You stil
need to account for those costs in the project budget and actuals an
Project can do this but it cannot distinguish those costs from billabl
costs. Add your overhead, profit requirements, etc, to that estimate t
come up with your bid to the client but track billable working time, bille
rates, and revenues in a separate, purpose-built, time-and-billin
accounting application. You can import and export data from Project to lin
the two but use each tool for the job it's best at

leveling?

Posted: 04 May 2004 07:26 AM PDT

Just guessing because you haven't mentioned the durations of the various
tasks but if as I suspect each overallocation occurs for less than full day
time period, leveling day-by-day will ignore it. That's what that setting
is - the smallest time increment that you want Project's the leveling engine
to worry about. If your recurring task is a staff meeting every Friday from
9 til 10, for example, and your regular task is widget waxing, schedules for
8 hours 8-5 and it happens to fall on Friday as well, leveling day-by-day
will not resolve the overallocation because the "problem time" is only 1
hour in length, less than a full day. Leveling hour-by-hour will do it and
if the meeting is a higher priority it will sit pat and the widgets task
schedule will change. If leveling can split tasks is on, the resource will
be shown working on the widgets 8 to 9, going to the meeting from 9 til 10,
and then going back to the widgets task for the rest of the day plus one
hour on Monday (still have to do a total of 8 hours of work on the widgets,
regardless, and leveling will never change the assignment percentage or the
total hours required for the task, controlling only when those hours occur).
If tasks can split is off, leveling hour-by-hour will cause the widgets
task to shift forward intact *2* hours, leaving the resource idle from 8 til
9, at the meeting from 9 til 10, then working on the widgets the rest of the
day plus 2 hours on Monday.

Hope this helps.

Updating an inserted project

Posted: 04 May 2004 06:34 AM PDT

Hi Diane,

Font Colors are a part of a View
Views are saved in the file they are generated in (in this case the master)
If you want to apply this view to other (inserted) projects you have to open
both and copy the view though the organizer.

Sorry, but that's how it is.
Think of this: a project can be inserted in many masters, who each may have
their formatting..

Is it legal to use clip-art and modify it by changing color of clothes or background ect.. and pass it off as your own design and sell as logos for companies? Is this considered a copy-right infringement? Would the company unknowing that their logo, that they thought was designed personally by the graphic artist, and purchased from them,  be held liable for use of the clip-art in their advertising as in signs, phone-books, business cards, hats, t-shirts and company vehicles? If if is illegal where would on go to report the person that sold the logo?
What are some things they would have to do to ensure their logo is legal? Would they have to change everything with the logo they thought was drawn by the person advertising to have made it?

Debian jigdo question

I have two harddisks, and I am trying to install Linux on the second one.
The first one contains WinXP and W2K Server, and the boot sector is in first
harddisk.
When I create a new partition on my second harddisk (by using cfdisk), there
is an option bootable flag for this partition. It cannot be set to true.
(because the MBR is in the first disk, is there a workaround?)
And in the Install Kernel and Driver Modules, I receives "/instmnt mount

When I select the CD drive as data source for installing kernel and drivers,
the installation process seems cannot read from the CD drive, although it
can detect the CD drive exists.

Fedora and XP on 1 Disk

Posted: 07 Apr 2004 11:04 AM PDT

In article <com>,
imotgm <com> writes:

It happened because the CHS geometry of the disk changed, probably as a
result of running a Microsoft disk partitioning tool that detected the
geometry differently than Linux did, and the Microsoft tool decided to
impose its will on the partition table. The x86 partition table actually
stores partition boundaries using both absolute sector numbers
(essentially "LBA mode") and CHS triplets. Linux only uses the LBA
numbers, but some other OSs use the CHS triplets, and any tool that
modifies partition tables must use both. The OP's partition table is
probably not defining partitions that overlap, despite having that
appearance based on the overlapping start and end cylinder numbers,
because the changed CHS geometry has created partitions that begin and
end mid-cylinder.

Still, this situation is a potential problem waiting to happen. If an OS
or tool uses the CHS geometry and ignores the LBA geometry, it could end
up corrupting some of the data. Some tools will also refuse to work on a
disk with this sort of mismatched geometry. Overall, it's usually best to
correct this sort of situation, if possible. Unfortunately, it's not
always possible, at least not without doing a full backup and restore. The
OP, fortunately, has room on the disk to copy the data and wipe out the
original partitions, as I outlined in an earlier post.

I was able to locate the Windows installer folder and it is loaded with

that needs to be cleared as well? Am I looking at it the right way?

Thanks for all of your responses.

Property to indicate if document is a template?

Posted: 09 Jan 2013 07:28 AM PST

Hi all,

Is there a way to progammatically check if a document is a template (.dot or .dotm) or a document (.doc or .docx).

I have some code in the AutoOpen() method that I only want to fire if it is a .doc/.docx - i.e. skip the code if someone is editing a template.

Note: it actually needs to work in both Word 2003 and Word 2007/2010 as users can have either version.

Thanks

Label mail merge, keeps skipping every 8th record. Removing <<Next Record>> from last field does not help

Posted: 07 Jan 2013 09:49 AM PST

MS Word 2010:
I am doing a mail merge with labels.
  • There are 8 labels on a page. I have set up the mail merge document and inserted all necessary mail merge fields in the first label in the upper left-hand corner.
  • Using "update all labels" I have filled out the rest of the page.
  • It does NOT say <Next Record> for the first label, only for the other 7 labels on the page that were automatically filled out using "update all labels", followed by my merge fields.
  • The preview seems fine. But when doing the actual merge, it skips records, 8, 16, 24 and so on; "A Field Calculation Error Occurred in record xx".
Many have said to remove <Next Record> from the last label on the page. However, when I do that it just skips record 7, 14, 21 and so on.

What am I doing wrong?

As often with mailings, I am sort of in a hurry... I hope someone can help. Please?

Macro to Find Delete

Posted: 03 Jan 2013 03:44 PM PST

When I try to create a macro to find "@@" and then delete "@@", I get a macro that does not work.

I choose record macro, select keyboard, key strokes are Ctl1,2, Go to Home, Find, Back space [to clear Find], type @@, Enter, close Find Box and either hit space bar then back space, or, back space only and then close record. What am I doing wrong? My goal is to enter text in various parts of a work document. I do this instead to mail merge.

Table Trouble

Posted: 03 Jan 2013 11:07 AM PST

I am completing a form at work and have placed a table at the top of my document as well as the end.  There are sections for the insertion of a name at the top as well as the bottom of the document.  What I would like to do is free up having to re-type the name at the bottom of the document so I would like the name that I placed in the first section to automatically insert itself into the last section.

Is there a simple way to do this?

Thanks in advance for any help that I can get concerning this!

Great, that is a good indication, hopefully the 4427 is the same base
hardware as the 4400, just a different variation.

I am waiting to hear back from HP also so I can ask them if the base
hardware is the same.

There are some going cheep for what they are so I thought it would make a

Many thanks for the reply.

It works using NTLDR. But now how to boot from CD?

Lenard <0.0.1> wrote in message news:<0.0.1>...

Thanks!

I tried the steps on my machine, it works! What I did after boot into
rescue mode was:

# mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
# cd /mnt/floppy
# dd if=/dev/hda2 bs=512 count=1 of=linux_bs.bin
# cd /
# umount /dev/fd0

Copied the file linux_bs.bin into C: and boot from NTLDR, it works the
same.

I'm going to install FC and apply the steps to my friend's notebook,
probably over the weekend. Shouldn't be any problem, although his
floppy is USB, but he's got FAT32 partition, so it should be mountable
from Linux to copy the file across.

Thanks again for all the help.

Ethan J.

ps: Why use NTLDR and not Grub? We're trying out Fedora, leaving the
MBR untouched makes it easier to revert the system back to XP-only
original state. Just delete all Linux partitions. Of course, in my
other machine, I'm using RH9 with Grub -- it's a better boot loader,
yes.

Yet once again, they are part of Debian's standard install. So they
obviously disagree with you.

I USE APT, friend. That works until something goes wrong. Which they do,
and with some regularity. That's why all those other manpages/utilities
are available. The folks at Debian.org know what they are doing.

Until something goes wrong.....

Why do you seem to think that these programs always work perfectly?

They don't.

And when they go wrong, it is a BITCH.

But if you compile from source, then it is relatively easy to track down
the problem, because you are dealing with an application directly, not
some package manager designed to be "user-friendly" that obscures all
of what's actually going on behind the scenes.

Like the GUI. I don't use them either. For the same reasons.

Larry, a lot of folks are only running a *local* FTP server, and consider

without doing conversions in their heads to be more important than
maintaining an international standard. I had users screaming at me when I

AFAIR it was no one else then mjt himself who pointed out that
it can be fixed with just putting "not-dash-escaped" in
~/.gnupg/options.

However, one can header-sign posts, which does even look better,
if your newsreader supports that, mine (tin) does through an
external perl script, but it doesn't still work for me...

Like I said, I think it's a link issue. In various configurations
and distros I've variously had to make links to get my mouse, modem,
floppy, cdrom, and/or sound card working. I always am running
extremely standard PC hardware, and I've tried all the big
distributions. No one ever seems to mention this essential detail of
making links! Drives me nuts. And, as far as I can tell, there is
no way to look at /dev and figure out which of those devices is
actually active, and which is just a stub sitting there in case its
needed. So you either need to know exactly what to do, or keep
trying stuff until it works. Very annoying.

Sorry, I guess that's my rant for the day. :) I agree with you, your
friend shouldn't have been forced to have trouble doing something so
basic. There appears to be some conflict between flexibility and
convenience, and so far Linux leans toward flexibility.
