Then don't use yast. I know you are fine with vi(m).

Yeah, the whole thing is a noob config tool, we know...Some
people will get behind it, others never.

resolv.conf overwrite

The brute force solution is to do (you gotta be root):

chattr +i /etc/resolv.conf

because then no one, even the superuser, can change it.

Part of chattr man page:

A file with the i attribute cannot be modified: it cannot be deleted
or renamed, no link can be created to this file and no data can be
written to the file. Only the superuser or a process p[o]ssessing the
CAP_LINUX_IMMUTABLE capability can set or clear this attribute.

But I do not like that because it is unclean.

For me, all I really had to do is get my

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-WhatsIsName correct by making sure
the line PEERDNS=no is in there. Here is part of my file for that.

#PEERDNS=yes
PEERDNS=no

Sample yum.conf for FC2?

My bad: I didn't upgrade with yum. I got CDs and did it with them. Now

failed every time on two -- and the error messages were over my head.

But I don't insist on yum. I like it better than up2date, when it works,
because then it's easier, and also works on things that RH has not yet
blessed. Otoh, it seems to take more maintenance than up2date, not less.

I've heard that synaptic is supposed to be good, for instance;
but all I know about it is how to spell it -- and googling it gets >64K

Later Red Hat can't install on earlier machines?

In comp.os.linux.setup Charles Packer <org>:
[..]

The .iso could be freely downloaded.

Why not install the i386 kernel and built a i586 one on your own,
or download the i586 package David showed?

Beside that RH 9 is EOL since nearly a year. Better get your
hands on something supported. There are various distro freely
download-able (www.distrowatch.com) or so.

I'd try Debian (Sarge), runs like a charm on older systems.
Doesn't cost you more then downloading the 100 MB .iso and a
fresh CD-R to put it on. It leaves you with a text based install,
you can install GUI/etc later from the internet with 'apt-get'.

Good luck

sound for Quake 3

I've tried the options discussed in that forum and I'm facing the same

when I start any map. I've even added this line in my modprobe.conf but
no use - it still freezes. Any idea that doesn't include recompile of
the kernel?

Here's what I added in my modprobe.conf
---------
*options snd-via82xx dxs_support=4*
alias snd-card-0 snd-via82xx
options snd-card-0 index=0

Thanks for the pointer. By the way, can anyone recommend an 11g card
for Linux. Preferably one that works with 2.4 kernels.
