Break Outlook email link with Exchange

Posted: 08 Apr 2005 11:57 PM PDT

Hi Mark,

From Outlook select the file menu and "Work offline"

That efectively disconnects you from the Exchange server but still allows
access. This will only work if the connection to exchange is setup in cached
mode.

Getting 5.6.1 rejected by remote host errors when routing out via connector

Sure. If you use HELO instead of EHLO you don't see any of those ESMTP
keyword, right? If that's so, make sure YOUR server doesn't send EHLO.
If Exchange doesn't see the 8bitmime keyword it'll send the message in
7-bit MIME.

I see that you said something to the effect that you already tried
this, but it isn't clear that you created a SMTP connector in
Exchange, put the target domain into the connector's "Address Space"
tab, and then told the Connector to always send HELO.

You should also create another SMTP connector and give it an Address
Space of "*". I'd leave the EHLO alone on that connector.

Printout of all members of a List

Posted: 07 Apr 2005 11:01 AM PDT

Try one of these:

1) Use Hyena from www.SystemTools.com. Double-click on the group name to
display it's members in the right-hand pane. Then select all the members in
the right-hand pane by clicking Edit > Select All. Then click Edit > Copy.
A new dialog will ask you to either copy the contents to memory or to a text
file.

Note: Hyena offers free support for Hyena to their customers, and to those
evaluating it. Support is always for free. If you want to download new
versions you must have current maintenance, though.

3) Exporter from www.systemtools.com/free_frame.htm. (Free). Can be
configured to dump users, groups, group members, shares, services, drives,
and printers.

4) Use a tool from Ideal Administration. This tool generates MS Access
tables of NT 4.0/2000 objects. Use the option "Databases\Groups". For a
free 30 day version visit: http://www.pointdev.com - You can also export:
network cards, IP addresses, installed software on workstations, etc. This
can be also generated by using a command line and from scheduled tasks

5) You could use VBScript & WMI similar to this one:

Option Explicit
Dim intCount, strGroup, strDomain, oGroup, oMember
strGroup = InputBox("Group to query?")
strDomain = InputBox("Domain or machine that hosts the group?")
set oGroup = GetObject("WinNT://" & strDomain & "/" & strGroup & ",group")
For Each oMember in oGroup.Members
intCount = intCount + 1
Next
msgbox "Group: " & strGroup & " hosted by: " & strDomain & " has " &
intCount & " members"

Be careful if you're just pasting the above into a script, the last line
above needs to be all on one line.

Note: Groups in AD are denoted by the memberof attribute.

6) Courtesy of Paul Williams:

C:\>dsget group "CN=GroupName,DC=domain-name,DC=com" -members

If you need to specify a server and/ or credentials, append the following on
the end:

-s dc01 -u userName -p *

Exchange 2K3: To cluster or not to cluster?

Posted: 06 Apr 2005 01:07 PM PDT

I work for a large financial institution in the SE U.S. 23,000+ users and we
don't use clustering. YMMV, but I wouldn't cluster unless you really had to.
Too many people cluster just because they can.

Without getting into too much detail, you should estimate what you users are
like. You can use perfmon to gather some of the data to give you a ballpark
user type. Go to your hardware vendor of choice and look at their offerings.
It may be that you want to go with more smaller servers rather than big. I
know of other co's that do this to spread the risk in case of an outage.

If your stores for 1100 users average around 35 gb per 550 people I would
probably go with
1 SG with 4 DBs. Each DB with 275 users. There are several good references
how to size your storage for Exchange. Read them!!! Possibly the single most
important aspect of properly sizing your server is storage sizing. (think
spindles, not space)
Most likely a 2Proc server will handle your needs.

If that potential to grow to 30,000 starts to look more serious, it may be
worth your while to get a consultant on site for a week or so to help you
architect that. They can get you started down the right path and if you feel
comfortable, you can continue on your own. 30k+ users is a lot different
than 1100 and you'll want their input. Your hardware vendor (if you go with
a major vendor like HP, Dell or IBM) should be able to hook you up with
someone with experience in large systems design or you can go with Microsoft
Consulting or a local person.

Is there a way to increase the storage space for Rules?

Jeff wrote:

As Tom said, the 32k limit is fixed, although yours is a frequent request.
Have the user remove some rules or simplify them until it works. The limit
is not for the *number* of rules - it's for the total size they all take up.

I check the event log and all the services are showing blue, with no warning
or errors, so as far as exchange is concerned everything is fine, the mail
just doesn't go.
