System Time advances 1 hour each bootup; /etc/localtime linked to non-mounted file?

I would trust Bill's insights/experience re: the localtime kludge and
chrony. I'm still trying to understand RH's compiled zone files
directory structure -- Bill?

Anyway, when I saw your post I looked up /usr/share/zoneinfo/Etc/GMT
and noticed that all the entries look awfully "generic" and not likely
compiled with DST or BST or any other local "time change" adjustments
(rules). Perhaps these are not meant to be used in conjunction with
local time in the RTC.

Couldn't you use one of the more specific zone files, eg.,
[/usr/share/zoneinfo/] Europe/London where time change rules are
compiled into the zone file?

Firestarter doesn't seem to write a file with the final rules, but I
commented out the one line with "-j LOG" I could find in the
/etc/firestarter/firestarter.sh script and that seems to have done the
job: no intruders are listed in /var/log/messages, ports are fully
stealthed (per http://grc.com "Shields Up"), and ntpd appears to be
keeping my clock updated. Many thanks Juha.

You're right. I need to find a copy of "Iptables for Dummies". :-)

Maybe. I first used GRUB in 2000 or 2001 because of a 1024 cylinder boundary

2.6 kernel install tutes

In comp.os.linux.setup, Mike H uttered these immortal words:

You'll need a more up to date modules-init-tools among others to get a 2.6
kernel working with Woody. I use Sid and don't know how to get a 2.6 kernel
working with Woody short of adding an unstable APT source and getting the
required updates from there. Doing this /could/ break your system. There
may be backports available too. Just Google and see.

The information here works for creating my own kernel 2.6 deb packages (even
though it talks about 2.4, it'll make a 2.4 deb with Woody though) but
won't help you at the moment I guess:

I can see that ntpdate is installed, though. Can anyone quote a
UK/European site I could try pointing it at, please?

Lenard,

Two additional things. First, I forgot to say thank you
for you help. Thanks! I really appreciate the help.

Second, I tried using the document you pointed me to
and I brought up the tool. In the tool, it looks to
me like the s/w thinks the ethernet interface is working.
I tried to ping my desktop on my LAN and got the following:

Sorry, typo it's of course "kiocluster". Unsure about the version
issue, it's kernel 2.6.5, but might be the reason, didn't checked
the 2.4.x sources until now.
