I have just made an attempt to do so.

I installed PuTTy and enabled X11 forwarding on it.

I made the SSH connection to the remote Debian OS.

Using PuTTy SSH I installed Synaptic using "apt-get install synaptic."

I installed Xming on my local Windows XP machine and it is running.

Using PuTTy SSH I executed the synaptic command on the remote Debian OS
and got the error:
(synaptic:11154): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display

I suspect this is due to my having not done something to connect
Synaptic to X11. I know X11 is installed because I can see its
directories and files when I execute "locate X11". I need help with
this. I do not know what to do next.

Update RHEL 5.1 to 5.4

My machine IS connected on line. I have updated one step at a time from
RHEL 5.0 all the way up to RHEL 5.4, kernel 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5PAE

Before that, I was running RHEL 3, keeping up with the versions of that.
When I make the big steps, I download all the .iso files and burn them
to CD-ROM, and install from them, but the rest of the stuff comes down
on-line, sometimes silently.

If you have another machine, you can download the latest files, burn
them to CD-ROM, and install from them. I would not do a re-install
except when going from one big release to another (e.g., RHEL 4 to RHEL 5).

Table of Contents is crossing right margin of the document. How to fix it?

Posted: 29 Mar 2015 01:30 PM PDT

Hi,

I created a Table of Contents (References tab), but it is crossing the right margin of my document.

I recorded my screen showing it exactly when I create the table of contents: http://goo.gl/KCf4bY

I would appreciate any tip on how to fix it in order the table of contents fits the document margins.

Thanks,

Carlos

Alternating footer image with continuous page number

Posted: 29 Mar 2015 10:08 AM PDT

Hi,

I would like to display a footer image - say every even page - and also have continuous page numbers throughout the document.

THE PROBLEM: When I insert a footer (blank three columns) and in the first column footer I insert the desired image. I then proceed to insert page numbers (current position) to the third column - leaving the second middle column blank. When I try to select DIFFERENT ODD & EVEN PAGES, both the image and page number appear on every other page.

THE QUESTION: How can I make the image appear every other page but leave the page number present throughout the document without having to manually format each page?

I hope someone can direct me with this issue,

Regards,

Peter

Arc symbol in equation editor

Posted: 29 Mar 2015 08:34 AM PDT

I am very familiar with Office and Equation Editor.  However, I can not locate a way to insert an Arc symbol over two letters in Equation editor.  It is not under the accent tab nor can is find a way to create it.  As a mathematics instructor, this is very important for the correct representation of the material.

iOS Word, Excel and PowerPoint all log me out when I close the app

Posted: 29 Mar 2015 08:15 AM PDT

Beeping While Scrolling

Posted: 29 Mar 2015 02:06 AM PDT

In Word 2013, I am getting a beeping tone as I scroll up and down. It is inconsistent, and incredibly annoying. Sometimes it is just one beep, and other times it is several. I have never had this problem with any other program, and cannot get it to stop. I have unchecked the box for "Provide Feedback with Sound," but to no avail.

I would love to know why this is happening and how to stop it. Alternatively, is there a way to completely silence Word? Thanks!

12-point font is now the size of what 11-point font used to be

Posted: 28 Mar 2015 09:40 PM PDT

Title is basically self-explanatory. I was writing a document in 12-point font, and my finger slipped on the keyboard and then the size of the font became the size of whatever font one point smaller than it formerly was. 12-point font is like 11-point, 10-point is like 9-point, 14-point is like 13-point, and so on. I hope someone can understand and help me reverse this problem.

Can't find Select Browse Object in Word 2013

Posted: 28 Mar 2015 04:52 PM PDT

In Word 2010, I frequently use the Select Browse Object button on the vertical scroll bar. In 2013 I can't find any way to search by table or field code. (I did find "Find Next" and "Find Previous" buttons that I added to my QAT.)

Gap in endnotes

Posted: 28 Mar 2015 04:39 PM PDT

Hello,

I have a large document with many endnotes.  I was editing this today in Word 2013, and now notice that some of my endnotes break off half way through and continue on the next page.  The separators don't seem to be the issue.  If I delete the endnote by the pilcrow, I instead delete the part of the endnote on the next page without it coming back on to a single page.  There are about 5 endnotes like this out of my 700+ endnotes.  Any ideas on what I did / what I can do?

I am attaching an image of the issue showing the markups surrounding the cutoff endnote (on the left which is spread to the right).  I have also tried deleting the endnote, but the next one sequentially just does the same thing in its place.

Thanks

We're sorry but Word has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly. Word will need to be closed as a result. Would you like us to repair now?

Posted: 28 Mar 2015 03:44 PM PDT

I had to reinstall the operating system (Windows 8 followed by upgrade to 8.1) on my PC.  Most functions in Office 2013 Home & Student edition (such as Excel) are now operating again but when I have tried clicking on various Word documents (for example, some of the type "Microsoft Word Document", and some of the type "Microsoft Word 97 - 2003 Document") an icon appears on the screen with the message: "We're sorry but Word has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly.  Word will need to be closed as a result.  Would you like us to repair now?" with buttons for three options: "Repair now", "Help" and "Close".

Several times now I have clicked on "Repair now" but nothing happens and the Word documents still cannot be opened.  I have also uninstalled Office 2013 then reinstalled it but the same problem remains.

Can anyone suggest a solution (with link if possible)?

Hi and thanks for the response.

I had already tried that as I stated in my original post. Tomorrow morning
I have an appointment with a Microsoft Office Deployment Engineer and he is
going to help figure out the problem with this. If we get the answer I willl
post it here.

Office 2007 Installation Point

Posted: 18 Feb 2009 06:29 AM PST

Hi Tony,

For Office 2007, the "Office Admin Installation Point" (oAIP) has been
replaced with the "Office Network Installation Point (oNIP)". To create an
oNIP you copy one or more Office 2007 Product CDs to the location of
choice. Unlike the prior editions you can combine products into a single
location and you no longer need to run Setup to create the point from the
CD.

The Office 2007 Resource Kit (http://microsoft.com/office/ork) includes
downloadable 'books' for different aspects of the customization process.
There was a significant amount of content that came out from Microsoft after
the initial product release that is on the Technet site that link takes you
to. I haven't checked the books available recently to see if they've
included the later data examples with exercises/tips.

Office 2007 also replaced the Custom Installation and Maintenance Wizard
utilities from prior versions with a built in Office Customization Tool
(OCT) and uses MS Installer patch files (MSP) in place of the previous
versions Transform (MST) and Maintenance (CMW) customization files.

Hi All,

Can anyone point me to a good book that covers how to create an
administrative installation point for deploying Office 2007? Just finished
one for Office 2003 using the Office 2003 Resource Kit from Microsoft, but
found out after purchasing the book that it's nothing more than a
regurgitation of what's on the Office Resource Kit web site. I'd like to
get my hands on something that addresses installation point
setup/configuration more explicitly, if possible.

Thanks >>

How to install HP-7400 document scanner in M/S Office 2003?

Posted: 14 Feb 2009 12:59 PM PST

Mary and DL,

This is my first post to this forum, and I may be doing this response the
wrong way, but:

Thank you both for your responses.

Both responses triggered a thought in my mind - ie that this printer is
installed on another computer on our network and it is installed on my
computer as a network printer and I can print to it, but I have not installed
the scanner printer driver for this printer on my computer!

I will try that and hopefully the driver will the show up in the Scaner
Driver selection box.

Thank you both for your help.

Best wishes,

Dave

ready for that much stupidity from you.

Why don't you take up the task of locating the OP and instructing him on how
to find his own posts? Not that I think you have the slightest idea how to
do that. I just want you to go away and save others from your worthless,
almost certainly harmful BS. Haven't seen a useful answer from you yet.

Actually no, that is not necessary. By default, the installation process
first removes the previous versions of the product but leaves the settings
intact.

Should you have to remove previous versions? I've never done that and have
had full version of 97, then upgrades for 2000 and 2003.

I am getting a new PC so am putting the upgrade project on hold for a while.

Not neccessarily drivers that are loading, but applications that auto start.
If you start msconfig, then disable all startup items, then reboot,
excepting the msconfig msg then retest Office
If ok its a question of re enabling a batch of auto start itmens & retesting
until you find the culprit.

You might first want to try uninstalling any anti virus application, reboot,
then testing, if OK reinstall the AV without any Outlook or Office
intergration

Office 2007 Std Group Policy Deployment Failing

Yes, you still need the Config.xml and with Office 2007 you are best advised
to deploy startup scripts - because of its more modular MSI architecture.
Please see the following:

Use Group Policy Software Installation to deploy the 2007 Office system
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc179214.aspx

Use Group Policy to assign computer startup scripts for 2007 Office deployment

Hope this helps!

That seems to have done it, followed by a reinstall, thanx.

I absolutely have no words to express the hatred I feel toward MS for Vista
and all the associated UAC and Privileges hassles. It's my own system in my
home used by nobody but me, and I resent the hell out of being told I don't
have permission to do something as simple as install or uninstall a program,
or sometimes even to delete a file.

I've used every version of Windows ever released, and DOS before that from
it's first release, and Vista has given me more headaches than all the past
OS's combined.

Thanx for the help and advice,

Make Office 2003 default open with 2007

Posted: 08 Feb 2009 08:27 PM PST

Try this;

You should specify the default version of each application by
registering it using 'Start | Run'. If you don't register the
application then the last version installed becomes the default.

(Enter the full file path and name of the program, note that
/regserver is outside the quote marks.)
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\Excel.exe" /regserver
The above will register Excel 2003 as the default on most systems -
change the file path / file name as appropriate.

The above was taken from an MS doc. - origonally pertaining to earlier
versions of Office, I'm assuming it is relevent to later versions

How can I view project files if i dont have project installed

Posted: 10 Mar 2006 01:27 AM PST

Hi andyjordan,

Yes, the MVP.ORG site is very useful. FAQ #16 on the site gives some
options for either using the copy picture button to create a picture that you
can paste into Word or PowerPoint. You may also as noted in the FAQ save a
project as a web page. The FAQ also gives a link to exporting data to Excel
as well as mentioning saving files as PDF.

Do any of those options work for you?

Thanks for the feedback and let us know how you get along.

If you create a new DSN for a new database, can Project 2003 create the

Steve House [Project MVP] wrote:

I agree with everything you say, Steve. Many years ago (more than 20),
when I started using scheduling software, I learned about productivity
and started factoring that in. But after a while, I reached the same
conclusions you described, and stopped doing it. I just included it in
the duration estimate. I do it for an entirely different reason now,
and I'm not sure I can explain it well.
It has for years mystified me that production systems are always
designed around the realities of downtime and the real world limits of
mechanical/electrical/hydraulic systems. When you build a copper
concentrator, if you want to process 100,000 T of ore a day, you build
a system with a peak capacity (everything available working) of say,
110,000 T. We know things break, even in the best designed systems.
There will be downtime. So just design for it. Strangely, in service
systems, there is rarely any attention payed to this same fact, that
people don't perform 100% all the time, and that, even if they did,
unpredictable factors occur that no one could foresee. To schedule the
overall system (of people, in this case) to be operating at 100% is
just as naive as to schedule the copper concentrator at 100%. So what
I'm applying in this situation is not the individual's inefficiency,
but the system's inefficiency. The two are different. One could argue
that they both should be accounted for in the original estimate of
time, just as the individual's is. But it doesn't work out the same,
and I'm not sure why. I'd be happy is someone else jumped in and
rescued me on this one. I do know that I get better results this way,
so it's an empirical thing. I'm not a university professor, like
Goldratt, who needs everything to have a theoretical explanation to
implement a technique. If I find it works for my clients, I go with it,
and try and figure out why it works later.
So now I'm trying to figure out why the system inefficiency needs to be
accounted for this way and the individual inefficiency is in the
duration estimate. Anyone have any ideas?

What are the names of the columns you want to stop changing dates for? You

Simultaneous access to a project in the Enterprise (SQL) version

Posted: 09 Mar 2006 09:31 AM PST

I think you would miss the multi resource reporting by single indiviual the most.
I only have a vague concept of a chemical plant "turnaround" but I can imagine
I'd want to capture the "at hand" daily best estimates of those who have routinely
been at the dance. Other packages offer the ability to multiproject/reschedule, but
many still need exclsive use of the data or Objects when doing the calculations.

There are two work arounds though,
1.) create the resource accounts under Project Server authentication (NOT windows domain) and have your reporting individual
login/logout multiple times.
(This is actually cheaper too because PWA CALS are per user (Volume licence agreement definition of a user) not per resource or
resource account.)
2.) use resource management projects that have NO logical task linking, only order (sequence tasks) along runs of singular unique
resources.

to expand on number 2.)
The idea is to build Control Plans with no resources only resource reporting directives (codes etc to use as filters to get the
tasks to the right people).
The resource managers then utilize their Projects as control panels only for the resources they are responsible for.

Control Plan A
-Task1
|--Task2
|---Task3
|
| Control Plan B
| -Task1
| --Task2
| ---Task3
|
|Resource Control Panel Project
|-Control Plan S Task100 resource JOE
|--Control Plan T Task5 resource JOE
|---Control Plan A Task2 resource JOE

Control Plan A/Task2
is constrained by an interproject link to
Resource Control Panel Project/Control Plan T Task2

"Control Plan A/Task2" can't start until JOE finishes "Resource Control Panel Project/Control Plan A Task 2"

The constraints on Control Plan A's tasks (external links) turn out to be the resources that are most loaded and causing the most
delay
Once you get a few control points in a few control plans it becomes pretty obvious where to spend your energies to make gains by
identifying
the present and future bottlenecks.

The Resource Control Panel Projects are also a way to collect data in non overwhelming batches from
large resource sets that report frequently.

Really it's just a smoke and mirrors trick to abstract the reporting sets to a size that has some value
when dealing with finite resources and impart simple discipline to the whole system.
It makes very frequent distributed status updates manageable.
It also keeps hero's in check because the impact of confiscating resources
even for brief time spans can be seen before a weeks worth of damage is done
even without a sophisticated optimization. (More like the farmer is out in the back forty. If you
want to tell him to go do something else then get on your hourse ride out there and tell him yourself.
That is a great dose of common sense and flow maintainer when it comes to multi-project contentions.)

A control point showing a dramatic delay in the critical path is an opportunity for gains,
if it had remained hidden, confusing, blurred or most commonly; lied about. It costs money.
