Formatting in-footnote numbers in Word 2013 Posted: 22 Dec 2014 11:24 AM PST How do you format the footnote number in a footnote in Word 2013? To be clear: I am referring to the number that appears immediately before the footnote text at the bottom of the page, NOT the footnote reference number in the main text. I assume there's a style for it, but I can't find it. Searching this site and the MS knowledge base wasn't very helpful either - too many irrelevant entries to sift through. Thanks in advance! Edit: After poking around a bit more, I've noticed that BOTH sets of numbers seem to use the same style. :( However, in my document - based on someone else's template, I'm a translator and have no choice - if I go to edit that style the font size and several other things are blank. AFAIK that means there are several different ones in use? And visually the reference numbers in the footnotes seem to be smaller than the numbers in the main text (too small, that's why I want to change it). |
Word/Outlook Posted: 22 Dec 2014 10:30 AM PST I used word (365) to create a document. I password protected the documented from being edited/modified by receiving end user. I sent mentioned document as an attachment using outlook.com to my client and cc a copy to a personal email. Using my phone I was able to edit the mentioned document with ease. I was not prevented from editing, nor required to type in a password. I called micosoft support (866) 425-4816 & (800) 642-7676 but the customer reps gave me the run around. One said it was a office 365 problem. the other said it was a outlook web problem. |
Win 2010/Word 2010 fonts Posted: 22 Dec 2014 10:17 AM PST Hello: I have reinstalled Windows 7 Ultimate, and my Office 2010 Home and Student (the latter from an MS page). Now, I am missing a lot of fonts that I had before. I have no memory of downloading and installing non-standard fonts before, but if Idid, they wer free and probably provided by MS. I have seen this discussed a lot, without resolve, and when I chatted with an MS rep, this person had no idea how to resolve this. There must be an explanation. Where is, for instance Rockwell Extra Bold? Kindly, anyone, please. Hans L |
MS Word 2010 freezes up when resizing margins Posted: 22 Dec 2014 10:13 AM PST When I open MS Word 2010, I can type fine. However, if I try to resize the margins, the program freezes up. It doesn't matter how long you give it to unfreeze, it remains frozen. It doesn't matter if you type something into the document or not. As soon as you try to go to narrow margins, the program goes "Not Responding" and that's it. |

word 2013 margin error Posted: 22 Dec 2014 07:24 AM PST Hello I have a document that has customized margins that show properly when I view my document with the "two-page view", but not in the "one-page view". The pages of the document are cut off and I see on the left that the ruler isn't the entire length of the page (I'm using normal printer page length 8.5x11). I saved my document to a pdf and it saved fine, and again it shows fine in the "two-page view". I've tried rebooting my computer in case there was a bug, but the problem still exists. I've tried resetting margins, changing the margins, splitting the pages, everything. LEt me know what can be done! Thanks :) |
Mail Merge - Asking me to "Select Table" twice (second time blank) Posted: 22 Dec 2014 07:03 AM PST I have created a mail merge template in Word and am experiencing a strange problem that I can't figure out. Here is what I have done and what is happening: - I have copied another mail merge template and modified it slightly for the particular scenario I am currently using it for. - I click "Start Mail Merge" > "Letters" - I then go "Select Recipients" > "Use Existing List" - I select my Excel document that I am using as a data source (It is xlsm as there are some macros in use) - "Select Table" pops up. I choose the Worksheet that I want to use and click "OK" - "Select Table" reappears, this time pointing to a file that does not exist and the table list is blank. My only option is to click Cancel and I lose the recipient list from the first "Select Table" I've run a few tests and none of these have worked: - Moved the files (Word doc and Excel workbook) to a different computer and tested. It then points to another, seemingly random, non-existent file in the second "Select Table" box - Moved the files (Word doc and Excel workbook) to a different location on my computer - again points to yet another, seemingly random, non-existent file - Tried removing password protection on the Excel file - no effect - Tried connecting the Word document to a different Excel file - works fine. This other Excel file was created completely separately from the one I want to use, but does include the exact same macros. This leads me to believe that it is not the Word document, but the Excel file itself that is the problem, the only thing is, I don't know why. The Excel file is in a shared location on the network and others have used it, so I thought maybe these non-existent files are actually real files on someone else's computer, but the Excel file doesn't have any connections to other workbooks. Any ideas? Thanks. |
Sometimes deletes what I type, or moves the cursor around Posted: 22 Dec 2014 06:16 AM PST When I am typing, my computer will delete part (or sometimes all) of what I've typed. Also, the cursor will also move around, which also causes problems. I'll often get a pop-up out of nowhere as well. It does this with Word and with Outlook 2013 emails as well. I had originally thought I needed to disable the mouse pad on the laptop, as it was suggested that the heel of my hand was hitting it without my realizing it. While that is possible, I've watched for it when typing, and I do not think this is causing my problem. However, I would still like to disable it, as I use an external mouse. The reply I found here apparently is for Outlook 2010, and I have Outlook 2013 and Windows 8. How do I disable the mouse pad on the laptop in Windows 8? I think perhaps I am accidentally hitting a key or keys that are shortcut keys, and that is causing my problem. I type pretty fast, so I'm sure I may be hitting a key I do not intend to hit. I also am thinking that my putting pressure on the part of the laptop next to the mouse pad portion, and then hitting a key, may be causing a problem. But those are just guesses. FYI, this 'cursor jumping around' issue has occurred four times just in my trying to type this message. It's very frustrating. And even more frustrating when I'm close to the end of a long message and the thing deletes my entire message! Any suggestions? I'm not good with computers, so I'll only attempt pretty basic steps. For example, I'll try the menus. But I won't do a clean reboot or do anything with the command prompt. I'll end up screwing something up worse! Otherwise, I'll have to take it to a computer repair shop. |

Word for iPad - Did Microsoft really remove word count? Posted: 21 Dec 2014 10:22 PM PST I can find help files that direct users to a word count feature under View in Word for iPad, however I cannot find this feature anywhere. My wife claims this feature was removed in the most recent update. Is this possible? It seems absurd that Microsoft would delete such a critical tool. iPad 2 iOS 8 I do have an Office 365 subscription Thanks, David in Seattle |
Is there any way to prevent a Word 2010 picture or drawing from printing temporarily? Posted: 21 Dec 2014 08:54 PM PST Many publishing programs allow the user to toggle the properties of individual objects in the document. We are looking for a way to temporarily toggle the SHOW/HIDE or PRINT/DON'T PRINT attributes of individual photos or drawings in a Word 2010 document. Is this possible? Just one example for this feature would be when creating a form letter or template that included a letterhead graphic. When printing to paper stock with a preprinted logo or letterhead, the user could simply turn OFF the printing attribute for the graphic. On the other hand, when printing to blank paper stock, the user could simply turn ON the print attribute so that the logo or letterhead graphic would print on the blank stock. Thank you for any help. |
Help in typing Mangal fonts Posted: 21 Dec 2014 08:17 PM PST Hello, Though I am well versed in Mangal typing but still has got a major problem…I want to write परमेश्वर like this, but when I converts Mangal fonts in Arial Unicode MS व goes in the legs of half श and becomes one word which is not accepted in Christian Hindi literature circle, like wise there are many other words with "Sh" Consonant like शाश्वत and then many other, I want all separate consonants to be typed in Arial Unicode MS. Could anyone please let me know the formula for doing that. I am using window 7 professional. If this does not work in Mangal then could anyone please help me in getting some another Hindi Unicode font that would help me to write the way I want without the combination of consonants. I am trying to bring this in the notice of Microsoft to get success hence have come to you… With regard Jeet |
Word 2013 Spell Check feature problem (no autocorrect line) Posted: 21 Dec 2014 05:14 PM PST Hello. I recently successfully installed Office 2013 (all the programs are functional) but I am having problems with the spell check feature in Word 2013. When I mistype a word like this 'appple', no red squiggly autocorrect line appears to offer possible suggestions to correct the word to 'apple'. I've checked the proofing settings, they are : English (US) and the 'do not check spelling box' is unchecked. I've also looked through the 'proofing' screen options and adjusted them but to no effect. No red line appeared. Are there other corrective options I could try? The interesting thing is that when I go to the 'custom dictionary' screen, the path location of the default dictionary leads to a temporary location rather than the location where the Office files were installed. Also, could there be a Office 2013 component (file, etc.), that is missing from the Office 2013 installation? |
Wordpad Posted: 21 Dec 2014 04:10 PM PST I'm real new to this so I'm not even sure I'm in the right spot, but here's my question. I have Windows 8.1. I found a Wordpad program that was free from Microsoft, so I downloaded it, since I couldn't afford Office. I'm quite familiar with how word pad works, but this one doesn't seem to let me change the line spacing. I guess I shouldn't say that...it does let me change it, but it's not making the space small enough. The smallest space it gives me is 1.0, which leaves a space big enough for another whole sentence line, like this. It doesn't let me go any smaller. It's very frustrating when I'm trying to type a letter to someone and it has a huge space like this. Can someone please help me? Thank you very much for your time. And I apologize if this question is not in the right place. Darla |
Create a collapse/expand connection between two paragraphs in Word. Posted: 21 Dec 2014 03:34 PM PST Hello, How do you create a collapse/expand connection between two paragraphs in Word (2013)? On occasion, I have seen Word documents which include the ability for collapsing or expanding certain paragraphs with a single click of the mouse. In these cases, a small triangle is present (just to the left of the "parent" paragraph) which when clicked, collapses or expands (hides or unhides) some number of "child" paragraphs below the paragraph with the triangle. In the uncollapsed state, the triangle is gray, points down and to the right, and is only visible when mousing over its corresponding paragraph. In the collapsed state however, the triangle is white (ie only its edges are visible), points directly to the right, and is always visible. How do you create a collapse/expand (parent/child) connection between two or more paragraphs? Is the connection in any way dependent of the styles assigned to parent & child? In other words, must both paragraphs be the same style or can there styles differ or does it not matter? How do you designate the number of "child" paragraphs to collapse below a given "parent" paragraph? Thanks |
