For straight-up ripping of a CD/DVD-ROM, though, I prefer WinImage.
I'm sure (obviously) that it's functionally no different from the

though it
does show on the Win7 Network list.
I also created a NEW folder on the XP C: Root and it can not be accessed. I
checked the

C++

Posted: 16 Feb 2010 06:50 PM PST

"Earl Partridge"

It is most likely one of the redistribution runtime libraries.
Generally it is better to leave them as they are.

If you wand or need C++ (or C#) you can get a free version of Microsoft's
Visual Studio for example here:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/de-de/express/default.aspx?wt.srch=1

Some elements of VisualStudio (e.g. the CSC.EXE compiler for c#) are
included in the .net framework directory of any Windows Version from Vista
Home upwards.

Again - the c++ installations you see in add/remove programs, are most
likely some runtime elements that don't harm anyone and it is better to not
touch them ...

Can you try and telnet into port 25 on the virtual machine from another PC

when trying to send mail to their domain. If I open udp port 137 to them,
the mail goes through fine. It sounds to me like they are using NetBios

Creating a Filter in Works Database

Posted: 10 Jun 2004 05:35 AM PDT

Ray,
Each month I need to filter out the birthdays. My
database has three columns:
"Birthday" with 07-04 date format
"Year" with -1942 (don't want the age to be known in all
instances, hence a separate column for the year)
"Month" with 07.
To filter out all July birthdays, I filter out the "month
contains 07".
Perhaps your simplest solution would be to establish a
month column. I believe you could use the "July"
designation in the month column, if that is your
preference.
Hope this helps.

Wasting Time Undoing Bold and Underline

Thank you so much James. I'll try that on the very next document I do.

Would you happen to know of any "option" I might have chosen under "Tools-
Options" or "Format" which is causing this to happen? I also realize that
when moving down a line from a bold/italic/underlined line, if you do not
click-off the feature, it will be carried down with the cursor. So, I'll
just have to remember to undo the feature before moving on each time.

Thanks again,

Browse object buttons for Word in Office 365 or 2013?

Posted: 05 Nov 2012 02:42 AM PST

I thought I would take a quick peep at Office 2013 Preview, but after the download from the Microsoft site I'm not sure whether I ended up with a Preview of Office 2013 or Office 365.

However that may be, it seemed the shape of things to come, a lot of them good, but to my great dismay I noticed that there are no longer buttons at the bottom of the vertical scroll bar to select a browse object. That's a huge loss, as it's an invaluable way to quickly check tables, images etc. in a two or three hundred page document, or for checking instances of specific text. The new navigation pane (since 2010) has its merits, but it certainly doesn't substitute for the browse object buttons.

Must we steel ourselves to their disappearance when Office 2013 finally rolls out, or could there be a better place than this to give direct feedback?

Re-Installing XP Office

Re-reading your OP several times, you are not installing Office from a

The solution in the KB I posted appears to be relevant. One question:
did you RUN the Office cleanup tool? If you just installed it, nothing
will happen unless you select the tool from the Start menu and let it do
the cleanup process. Then, in order to prevent having a handful of

Without a qualifying project you will have to buy the full version to

As long as you use these printers from clients only, no trouble. Don't think
you want to access them from the server.

Taper or similar software will do the trick at no cost. Or just write a
script using cpio or tar to do the actual tape job, and cron it.

Samba does really well as a NT style PDC. You will want to save the "my
documents" folder or the whole profile on the server, which makes the
nightly backup a breeze. Samba can run logon scripts when configured as a
PDC.

At my former workplace I had a script which connected to the administrative
shares of windows pcs after they logged on (using a root preexec calling a
delay and shellscript) which pushed several things to the clients, in
particular virus scanner updates for their local scanners. One brand of
virus scanner was able to use its database from the server directly, after
doing a little registry tweaking.
For scanning on the server, you will want amavis (mailscanner) and
postfix/imapd/pop3d together with spamassassin. No direct outbound mail
access on your clients, everything has to pass the server and the virus
scanner.

openvpn. No, I have no experience with it yet.

You will also want a good firewall which iptables can do for you on linux,
with a NAT setup you need only one IP address from your ISP and the pcs
behind are basically protected as long as the gateway server is secure.
If you have sensitive data however, and considering you are a linux
beginner, I would put the server behind a hardware NAT router (assuming you
want have internet access from the workstations).
For further service, become a member of a local linux user group :).

Multi boot 98 Linux XP - need help

partition,

I'd recommend this. It's conceivably possible to run Win9x (includeing
Win95, Win98, and WinME, all of which are really DOS with a graphical
interface) and WinNT (which includes NT 4.0, Windows 2000, and Windows XP,
all of which are really VMS source code with Microsoft wrapping their tools
around it) on the same partition, but siince WinNT supports an NTFS file
system and there are a bunch of benefits to that, it's usually worth
installing them separately.

Note also: Linux can safely read NTFS partitions with the most recent kernel
modules, but it doesn't safely *write* to NTFS, and perhaps never will
because Microsoft is once again planning to change it behind people's backs.
(Look at the newly announced XML-based filesystem meta-data craziness
they're planning!) If you need to be able to safely write *from* Linux to
the Windows file-systems, use FAT32. You can force NT installations to be
done on FAT32, although it takes some extra selections and isn't recommended
for security reasons.

But sheesh, if you're running Windows, don't expect that level of security
anyway. They automatically share the root file system as \\hostname\c$
without telling you, and Windows mis-handles network passwords so badly that
local file-system ownership is like nailing down the barn door while you
forgot to put up the back wall.....

??? I've done this quite successfully. FAT32 on Win9x on the first primary
partition, NTFS for Win2K on the second, and Linux on the rest. But I always
did it with the Win9x install *first*.

This happens when you install XP, it doesn't happen everytime you boot with
it, just to be clear.

Help compiling modules... Fedora

I'm running Fedora (albeit patched with numerous kernel
recompilations) and AFAIK the standard installed kernel package
(kernel-2.4.22-2115.ntpl.i586.rpm) contains the very modules you need.
I'll go check...

yep.. you've got /lib/modules/2.4.22-2115/kernel/fs/msdos/msdos.o and
..../fs/fat/fat.o, just modprobe these and said support should appear
(check /proc/filesystems).

NTFS.. hmm... dunno why they leave it out of the stock rpm, I did
compile the ntfs module in isolation when I needed it, it 'Worked For
Me' but YMMV. Anyhow, if you install the kernel-source rpm and load
the stock Fedora config (load alternative config file in make xconfig)
just add NTFS support as a module in Filesystems.. and go compile.
Sheesh!

But if you want to try and cheat.. install the kernel .rpm, go to
/usr/src/linux-2.4/fs/ntfs, sort out the Makefile and compile ntfs.o -
if that's beyond you, I suggest doing a proper kernel compile :^).
Also the kernel config scripty thingy says NTFS write support is
DANGEROUS - well, I never had any problems with it on a 4gb NTFS
volume.

Samba / Windows XP - Is there a plain password patch for XP

Posted: 13 Feb 2004 11:28 AM PST

deletethisbit.com (Mark Hobley) wrote in message news:<blueyonder.co.uk>...

doubt a plain password "patch" is needed. check the latest Samba
version.

ie., you want to pass plain text passwords on the wire?

Linux distro/version? Samba version? Which Win patch? Which
registry key?

Don't know of a "solution" off the top of my head, but doubt you need
a patch. Just correct configuration.

Google Groups search with:
Windows XP smb password linux
turns up > 1500 hits
while using:
Windows XP smb plain password linux
turns up 203 hits
while using:
Windows XP samba plain password linux
turns up 216 hits
and doing web search with:
Windows XP samba plain password linux
turns up 3,810 hits

Don't cross post so much in hopes of finding a quicker answer -- it
clogs up all the NGs with dropped threads when someone (like me)
prunes the cross posting. If you're unsure where to post, pick best
guess and ask advice where to post.

You'll get an answer/solution faster by posting _complete_and_
accurate_ infor re: your setup and the things you've already tried.
State your problem/desire -- not what you _think_ is a solution (or
you wouldn't be seeking help).

And remember, Google is your friend -- especially re: widely used
components like Samba.

Absolutely true. However, RedHat dumped it in RedHat 9 and it's no longer
well supported there. They're using "redhat-config-xfree86", which seems to
be a better tool and supports dual-headed configurations vastly better.

Good ideas, but didn't work.

Eventually I realized that it's easy to use a floppy disk and to
specify

kernel /bzImage

Everything went fine. Sometimes the low-tech solution works just
fine. It's not as if I reboot this machine very often. rj

Have discovered that the problem reported below was caused by the ISO
burning software I used, EasyISO 123 which apparently doesn't work
properly with my new LG4040B multi-format burner (but reports the ISO
as successfully burned).

Today I burned the ISO again, with the program EasyBurning 1.62 (which
also failed to burn the ISO on the LG4040B, but reported the failure
and turned out a pure coaster), but using an older Plextor Plexwriter
8/20 burner, and this time the disk booted ok and all but two of the
52 files passed the md5sum test.

Resource Cost - two projects

Posted: 16 Apr 2004 07:28 AM PDT

Simon Clayton --

Here's a technique I have used successfully to quickly change the Cost Rate
Table used for an entire project:

1. Open a US project in which the Cost Rate Table B needs to be applied to
every assignment
2. Click View - Task Usage
3. Right-click on the Work column header than click Insert Column from the
shortcut menu
4. Select the Cost Rate Table field and click OK
5. Click Edit - Replace
6. Enter A in the "Find what" field and and enter B in the "Replace with"
field
7. Select the "Look in field" dropdown list and select the Cost Rate Table
field
8. Select the "Test" dropdown list and select Equals
9. Click the Replace All button

Using this technique, you can quickly change the Cost Rate Table setting for
all task assignments across the entire project. Believe me, it is a lot
easier doing this than changing every Cost Rate Table value for every
assignment. Hope this helps!

Harumph - 36" x 60" you say???? First PERT chart I saw was about 15 years
ago, the task chart for a major renovation project for a huge mine and
smelter operation in Utah. As I recall the Network Diagram/PERT chart
covered 3 entire walls, from ceiling to floor, of a standard length
double-wide trailer home (caravan) that served as the project office.

locking columns

Posted: 15 Apr 2004 08:23 AM PDT

If you want to get really fancy, you can write VB as an add in and using the
"On task change" event, trap and reject changes to certain fields.
Unfortunately, add-ins are un-installable so the clever user will get around
it... :-(

Analyze Timescale Data in Excel - available fields

Posted: 15 Apr 2004 08:21 AM PDT

Hi John,

I have created a custom field (text). My project needs to be summarised
along a different axis to that provided by the current data analysis tool.

By creating the additional column I wanted to summarise all the task with
say "server" or "migration" and export these only into excel. But I would
also need the custom field / column to export as well otherwise I'll have to
manually input the information and my project files is about to grow!

I have downloaded the file from the link you provided and fully intend to
read the documentation. I will post into the NG if I have any questions -
hopefully you can reply time permitting.

Again, thanks for posting the additional bolt-on - I never knew this
existed! There must be many Bolt-on, add-ins I have never even considered.

Cheers - Vers

Exporting MSP 98 .mpp to .mpx files.

Posted: 14 Apr 2004 10:21 PM PDT

MPX simply doesn't support these fields, and many other fields.

The MPX file format was introduced early in MSProject's life (v1?) and was
updated a couple of times - finally resulting in MPX4 which roughly
corresponds to the capabilities of MSProject4.1

New features in subsequent versions of MSProject were NOT incorporated into
a revised MPX specification. The ability to save MPX was omitted from
MSProject 2000 (or was it 2002?), and I think MSProject2003 can't even open
MPX.

hope this helps

Resource Shift Work & Multiple Projects

Posted: 14 Apr 2004 12:20 AM PDT

I tend to think of resources in general as "skill set packages."Since the
resources have different skill sets I would suggest listing them as
individuals - Bill, Mary, etc. Do NOT have an "aggregate resource" called
Help Desk with a max avail of 400% - you have to have one or the other as
project has no way of knowing that Bill is also on of the 4 Help Deskers.
An aggregate resource, like using "carpenters, 500%" to represent 5
carpenters, implies that the people are freely interchangeable and it
doesn't matter which member of the group is assigned to a task, which is not
the case in your circumstance. Their work shift then is described by their
individual resource calendar. You can use the Resource Group field as a
reminder that they are all Help Desk resources and to group their work and
costs for reporting. I can't think of a way to automate insuring that one
of them is always on duty on the help desk task, you'll just have to do that
manually - that why they pay the pm big bucks, to keep her eye on such
details <LOL>.

Setting up Titles or headings that are not to become task, Just titles

Posted: 13 Apr 2004 07:21 PM PDT

This is exactly what the summary task is for...but the "title" should be
something meaningful in the project process and progression like your phase
1, phase 2, etc, examples, and NOT some artificial construct such as using
summaries to group tasks by department responsible and the like.

separate each group of task by title. Let's say, Phase 1 is the title, Phase

COLUMNS

Posted: 12 Apr 2004 03:26 PM PDT

Hi
Theres probably a better way of handling this , but I
created a few simple Tables that list all the customised
fields; just in case I don't customise it first, or are
looking thru master files.
To obviate the need to go searching, when inserting the
new column, right click and select Customise.
If you email me I will send you a file with the tables I
use.

in them, just for ease of viewing the screen. Now, when I
want to "unhide" them (you know, like in excel) I can't
find the "unhide" button.
