Disadvantages of assigning multiple resources to tasks in MSP?

Posted: 28 Sep 2005 06:31 AM PDT

Hi Emma,

There is no (major) problem with aving multiple resopurces on a task as long
as all users remember that Project nearly always handles those multiple
assignments (a resource on a task = an assignment) as if they were
independent tasks: for instance, one resouce has a day off, the other one
happily continues to work; Change the work of one assignment it will not
affect the other opne (and then indeed both assignments will have different
durations...

Everything quite logical, but sometimes so surprising that I keep on
recommending to use one assignment per task as long as utterly possible.

Hope this helps,

MS Project: Buffer time... How to?

Posted: 28 Sep 2005 03:43 AM PDT

Hi Woman in white,

Well, the only way to add buffer time (in the TOC sense of the word) is to
CHANGE THE END DATE of the project (f.i. by adding a Must Finish on
Milestone)
You can then see the buffer by task by inserting the Total Slack column.

Identifying linked-to Ghost tasks

Posted: 28 Sep 2005 02:33 AM PDT

Hi DonL,

Yes, I thought of that. However, I assumed Martin was looking for a method
of identifying tasks in the current project with external predecessors
and/or external successors, from his comment "linked-to"ghost" tasks". The
[External] field will show "yes" if a specific task is external but will not
flag if the predecessor or successor is external. Of course, it is possible
that my mind is just on a holiday :-)

Modeling task-based revenue instead of resource-based cost

Posted: 27 Sep 2005 12:39 PM PDT

Hello

I should have prefaced this with more about our business, but in a service
business revenue is definitely based on completing tasks. When we sign a new
client, we craft a project plan to match the scope and estimate the hours
necessary to achieve that scope. We can then bill and/or recognize revenue
based on hours completed and/or percent complete on a monthly basis. So our
revenue is directly and solely connected to a task's hours. Each client
could have a different rate, depending on the value of their contract and the
hours in the plan, so I can't say that Sally's rate is a flate $150 (like in
a lawyer example) because in one project it may be $150 but in another it
could be $300. And that rate is based on the project, regardless of who
completes an hour of work.

No worries on the overlay of cost info - we're not calculating cost in any
other manner or use, so it's fine. I realize it's a bit heretical but it
works!

Thanks for the help and insight.

Automatic split of a task

Posted: 27 Sep 2005 02:53 AM PDT

THX Jan, but... it's not working as I want to (I tried it before my first
post).

What I want to do in fact is the following, eg.:
- you have 1 task - T1 - for the entire day (meaning 8 hrs);
- another task - T2 (2hrs) - shows up as very urgent and now I have to add
this task in my .mpp;
- first I had my task for 8hrs during the day and now I have T1 for 4hrs,
then T2 for 2hrs, again T1 for 4hrs.

What I want to be shown automatically when I enter T2 in my plan is
something like that (sorry for my pathetic try of replacing graphics with
letters :) ):

T1 xxxx...xxxx
T2 xx

It's easy for me as a guy that plays a lot with project plans to do it, but
I don't want to put another task on my programmers to learn to work with MPP.

THX a lot

In two custom text fields, use the following formulas:

Go to www.dnsreport.com , and type your DNS domain name into the email test

Use that as the servername part of your URL , and put /Exchange on the end.

Blacklisted IP !! Spam !! Exchange Routing !!

Posted: 01 Aug 2007 12:01 AM PDT

I think, other than getting a proper static IP address from your ISP, your
best option is to arrange to relay your outgoing emails through you ISPs
SMTP servers. I imagine your ISP will let you do this if you're already
using their POP3 servers to receive email?

What you will need to do is change your send connector to forward all
outgoing email to a "Smart host" which will be the FQDN or IP address of
your ISP's SMTP servers.

In these days of companies seeing 80%-90% of all incoming email as spam most
companies use a lot of test to reject spam, one of these is often using a
dynamic IP address block list, as a lot of spam is sent via compromised end
user PCs that have dynamic IP addresses.

Compact Database

1. delete stuff.
2. Wait for deleted items retention to expire.
3. Wait for online maintenance to occur
4. wait for online defrag to complete.
5. verify the freespace in the event 1221.

Now, considering this, did you put limits in place to prevent the store from
growing to that size again? If not, it's pointless to do an offline defrag,
the store will simply grow again and your performance will degrade in the
interim. Only if you are absolutely certain that the space will not be
reused should you consider an offline defrag. Even then, only if you have
no ability to create another store (a single server standard or SBS
organization) should you consider an offline defrag. If you have the
ability to create another store, on this server or another server in the
same org, the move mailbox and dismount/delete the old store instead.

Microsoft Office Word 2010 Program File Lost?

How do I set Word 2007 as the default for word (.docx, .doc) files instead of Word 2013?

Posted: 05 Oct 2014 10:18 AM PDT

I have Word 2007 and Word 2013 installed on my desktop computer. I would like Word 2007 to launch when I click on Word (.doc, .docx) documents in Windows Explorer, rather than Word 2013. I am running Windows 7 SP1 with the latest updates.

(I want Word 2007 as the default because in Word 2013 the fonts are not displayed with ClearType and are uncomfortable to read - I have tried all the offered workarounds but they do not work for me. The problem has been widely discussed in many forums - eg: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-performance/blurry-text-in-windows-8/ed053d17-b525-4e09-bdbc-de91114d975c? )

I have tried setting Word 2007 as the default without success.

I have tried two methods:

1 - right-clicking on a Word (2013) file icon in Windows Explorer and selecting Open With... and then Choose Default Program.  I am only offered the choice of Word 2013 and when I browse to the location of Word 2007, it ignores my choice (perhaps because they are both called winword.exe)

2 - in Control Panel I have gone to Default Programs. Word 2013 is shown but not Word 2007. When I click on Word 2013 it only allows me to select the file types it can open (eg .docx) - it does not let me deselect them.

I suspect I may have to change some setting in the registry.

Can anyone advise a fix?

Many thanks

Microsoft Word 2013 doesn't work offline

After confirming my Microsoft account with my email to use Microsoft word 2013,  every time I open it again, it asks for my account info again like it didn't get it the first time. Microsoft word 2013 will not work offline either, even if the file has been saved on my local drive and not online. It won't open at all and tells me I'm not connected to a server. Why should that matter if it's a local file? Does it surreptiously save the file on their cloud without the user's consent?

I tried to get tech support and they wanted to charge me either $99 or $149, dependent upon which package I chose to go with it. Of course I declined this amazing bargain for help on something that should be free.

Posted: 05 Oct 2014 07:57 AM PDT

help with Macro (save a file with same content but increment filename by 1 each time, up to say filename30, then stop). This is because an upload platform needs a unique filename of a master table (invoicing)

the macro i have (which fails) is:

Sub SaveIncrementedFilename()

Dim PathAndFileName As String, n As Long

PathAndFileName = "C:\Pool\job-transperfect-1 Oct-ex"
If Dir(PathAndFileName & ".doc") = "" Then
    ActiveDocument.SaveAs (Pool \ job - transperfect1ex)
Else
    n = 1
    Do While Dir(Pool \ job - transperfect1ex) <> "30"
        n = n + 1
    Loop
    ActiveDocument.SaveAs Pool \ job - transperfect1ex & n & ".doc"
End If

End Sub

"This modification is not allowed because this selection is locked" In Word 2010

When ever I try to use the checklist feature, all it says is "this modification is not allowed because this selection is locked" when I try to type anything in. It is a new document that I did not download form anywhere. Here is the screen shot:

Can't open Excel or Word e-mail attachments

Posted: 05 Oct 2014 06:04 AM PDT

Split from this thread.

I have this issue with not being able to open excel or word within Outlook. Even if I save the files to my desktop or documents, they will never open if originating in Outlook thru an email send. I've gone to Trust Center settings and all is checked. When trying to open, it says "opening in protected view" and never opens. This is a huge issue and of course, hp (my new computer vendor) won't help

How do I delete a question and answer that was accidentally repeated by mistake?

Posted: 04 Oct 2014 11:36 PM PDT

I posted a reply which momentarily disappeared from the screen. After I reentered the information, the original reappeared and now both are there and it looks really dumb. How do we delete the one and keep the other?

How to activate office student 2013?

Posted: 04 Oct 2014 09:13 PM PDT

So I have office on my computer (new computer, just got office) and the Geek Squad at best buy installed it, but apparently its not activated. I've tried activating it and i'm signed in on the home page of whatever it is when you click office, but it still won't activate. Any help? Thank you!

PS I think I have Windows 8 but im not sure. And it won't let me type or change the font or size on word. Also I have office powerpoint and exel and still need to activate them.

Typing delay in Word - not about the animation

Posted: 04 Oct 2014 08:28 PM PDT

Hi,

Since I upgraded to Office 365 I've been experiencing a never-seen-before lag while typing on Word. I've used every version since Office 95.

I use AutoHotKey to speed up my typing but, still, there shouldn't be any noticeable delay.

I searched a bit and found that registry tweak to disable Word 2013's typing animation, but that's not all. It's like I'm running on Pentium II with 32MB of RAM. It's also not about the zoom level.

I also tried running Word on safe mode, but no luck. Typing in the notepad should not be THAT faster. And I'm talking about blank documents, not ongoing big ones.

What can I do to streamline my typing experience in Word?

My Setup:

Processor: Intel Core i5 3450 @3.1GHz

MoBo: Gigabyte Z77M-D3H

Memory: 8192MB DDR3 Corsair 1333MHz

VGA: Saphire ATI Radeon HD 7770 1024MB 128 bits @1920x1080

OS: Windows 8.1 Pro

You could replace the "Landing Page" in the CRM directory with a
RedirectorPage that requires a click to close, then it loads the CRM
loader .aspx page.

Then if you enable default content pages in the CRM website properities
and added this redirector page to the top of the list it should always
load first when you hit the web site.

Many sites are confiigured with redirectors for non SSL connectors.
This enforces a redirection of any general web connections to the SSL
Page.

Althought this might be an usupported configuration it is a prety safe
customization.

Reinstall problem

Posted: 11 May 2005 12:41 PM PDT

Hi Rob,

It turns out that I was using the wrong install package. There was a copy
of the CRM 1.0 disk on the system. It looks a lot like the 1.2 setup...
Except for that big 1.0 in the opening license agreement page. :-)

Using the CRM 1.2 install worked perfectly.

Moral of the story, when troubleshooting don't forget the simle stuff.

Thank you for responding.

Purge data in CRM

We regulary have this problem. We wrote a simple vb app using the MS CRM
APIs to query the accounts using the ExecuteQuery method in the CRMQuery
class, then for each account returned - delete it using the delete method.

We then did a simple tidyup for the contacts - although 98% had already been
deleted. Takes about 3-4 hrs to run for about 10000 records.

What is the Manage For?

Using the manager field means you can use the Logical User "Owner's Manager"
when designing workflow rules. Eg send an email to the Owners Manager when
certain conditions are met

Access CRM from Internet

Posted: 10 May 2005 05:14 PM PDT

We have a demo for the CRM using the Adventure Cycles which clients can
access from the internet.
We have a sub domain called www.crm.<company name>.com.au, and this then
fowards all traffic to our public IP address. We use a SonicWALL VPN,
firewall, router and switch etc etc (very good unit), and this unit then
routes incoming traffic on port 80 from this sub domain to our web server (as
our personal internal CRM runs on 8083). The web server recognizes the
incoming packets from the sub domain address, (which we added into the CRM
web site in the IIS on the web server) and then directs it to the CRM web
site and then provides a log-in box.
It's that easy haha, I hope my description isn't too confusing and gives you
some idea of how to do it without an ISA server.

Good Luck!

Sending Direct Emails

Posted: 09 May 2005 11:54 PM PDT

Thanks crmrunner but as I mentioned I have system admin rights in CRM
therefore I have organisation level on all objects. CRM admin is the user
account that installed MS CRM and is the only account that can send direct
emails the rest of the functionality works for other users and everyone can
send emails from within an account, contact record etc but when any user or
myself try and send a direct email I receive the error as shown in the first
post? It appears to be an AD problem as the security settings listed under
the security roles are exactly the same and i am using the same role (sys
admin) as the crm admin. We have installed CRM at 3 other clients 4
including us and we have never encountered this problem before.
