Word VBA PasteAndFormat vs. PasteSpecial

Is there a functional difference between the following:

Via Home > Paste > Paste Special > Keep Text Only:

Selection.PasteAndFormat (wdFormatPlainText)

Via Home > Paste > Paste Special > Unformatted Text:

Selection.PasteSpecial Link:=False, DataType:=wdPasteText, Placement:= _

        wdInLine, DisplayAsIcon:=False

MS Word 2013: Cannot view More Symbols dialog

Posted: 03 Oct 2014 10:37 AM PDT

When I click on Insert, Symbols, More Symbols.  MS Flashes but nothing happens.  No dialog opens up with the symbols.  How do I get this symbol pallet to be shown so I can insert other symbols besides the 20 in the initial menu?

I tried adding it to the quick access toolbar in the hopes that that might help but it didn't either.

I am using MS Office 2013 student 365

I hope someone can help quickly as I am trying to use this as a study tool for an exam to be very soon!  Thanks in advance!!!

Word 2013 hangs on a document created in Word 2007

Posted: 03 Oct 2014 10:25 AM PDT

The document was originally a 5 page agreement created in Word 2007 and the original functioned correctly.  Another user who is testing Office 2013 opened it in Word 2013 and was unable to print it.  I also have Office 2013 and the document exhibits the same behavior for me.

In Word 2013, it will not print.    I have done the following:

1                    Tried multiple printers from different vendors

2                    Tried a different user and workstation with Word 2013

3                    Verified that the original document will print from Word 2007

4                    Removed all original text and added this log

5                    Ran Payne Metadata Assistant to remove all metadata.

6                    Converted to docx

7                    Verified that this version will still print in Word 2007

8                    Print to PDF fails

9                    Save as PFD works and the resulting PDF can be printed.

10                Disabled Metadata Assistant and cleaned using Document Inspector.

11                Turned off/on all Printing Options (in File - Options - Display)

12                Disabled all add-ins

13                Disabled Worldox

14                Selected Check for a Solution and got the WER and errors below

We are planning a migration to Office 2013.  While I have a work-around, I would like to know if there is a setting I can make either in the Customization Wizard or Group Policy to avoid this.

Pasting from Visual Studio into Word 365

Posted: 03 Oct 2014 09:35 AM PDT

Hi there

I am creating some notes in Word 365. These notes include snippets of code from Visual Studio which are in a table with a shading. When I paste the notes into Word, the background colour of the text is preserved, which is white. This is not what I want.

How do I remove the background colour of the text? I have read several questions and answers that do not help. I have tried selecting the text and choosing no colour in the shading. I have tried selecting the paragraph and doing the same.

I do not want to set keep destination format in options because the text is syntax highlighted and I want to preserve this.

Can someone please help?

Regards, Mark

At Wits End -- Combining Paragraphs and Merging Styles...

Posted: 03 Oct 2014 08:35 AM PDT

Someone sent me a document from outside my company.

I created a new numbered list, and set the heading levels, formatted, etc.

In the first relevant paragraph "A", I set it to Heading 1 and got the formatting where I wanted it.  In the Style box, I right-clicked and selected all instances of this Heading and updated them to the new format.  Great.

The next paragraph after the paragraph "A" is some random format.  I put the cursor at the end of Paragraph A and hit "delete".  My hope was that the next paragraph would be pulled up to join paragraph A and take on paragraph A's formatting.  No such luck.  I get one paragraph, but the formatting changes in the middle.

I then put the cursor to the left of the beginning of the next paragraph and hit the backspace key. Same hope.  This reformats my Paragraph A to the random format.

I've spend almost 30 minutes looking for options to set this so that when I combine two paragraphs, Word applies the "first" paragraph's formatting to the new combined paragraph.  I would think this is possible, because Word seems willing to use the "second" paragraph formatting for the combined paragraph.  Of course, to do it that way, I would have to write my document backwards.

In the name of all that's holy, can someone tell me how to do this?  I'm certain that there is an astonishingly simple solution.

Thank you.

Table of content levels using multiple TOC in the same document

Posted: 03 Oct 2014 08:33 AM PDT

I created multiple TOC in a document, using Bookmarks. My problem is that when I go in the table of content dialog box to change the showing level of one of the TOC, it deletes the link to the Bookmark, adding all titles for the entire document instead of only keeping the titles of the section it was linked to. I tried going back to re-link it to the appropriate section, but then the showing levels go back to default.

Hello,

Have a directory mail merge that isn't populating the last page with all of the information

Posted: 03 Oct 2014 07:46 AM PDT

Trying to figure out why the below mail merge is not putting the bottom text on the last page aka record of the merge.  The data file that it is pulling from generates 22 pages, pages 1-21 have the full letter, page 22 only has the Dear Parent/Guardian: through the course listing.  It leaves off the "This letter is designated to .." section entirely.  I am trying to help our office staff produce a cleaner letter than our current SIS does.

Using TTS "Speak" in Office 2013 - Changing the Default Voice

Posted: 03 Oct 2014 07:28 AM PDT

I'm using office 2013 with Windows 8.1.

In the Control panel I changed the default TTS voice from David to Hazel. While the default Windows TTS voice changed, in microsoft Office when I use the Speak command it still is using Microsoft David.

Is it possible to change the default TTS Voice in Office 2013? After searching online most fixes are for older versions of office.

How do you write on top of lines for editing a paper?

Posted: 03 Oct 2014 06:48 AM PDT

Hi guys,

I am editig a paper for a friend, and I want to know if there is a way to write on top of a line, so the comments can be right where the writing is, instead of to the side like when you add a note. It would be really neat if that was a possibility to do, and I am wondering if any of you know if there is a way to do it, although I don't think there is.

I don't mind adding spaces in between lines to be able to write on top of lines, but for now I think I am going to have to insert a text box or work in OneNote because I don't think there is a way to do it in word.

Thank you,

Iulia

print multiple labels using merging mail

Posted: 03 Oct 2014 06:06 AM PDT

Hello people,

I have to put labels on boxes in my factory... I have an excel file including all information I need and it's like this:

item  price $ exp. Date manufacturer  nr. Boxes
chocolate 2 19-Mar factory1 15
milk  3 14-Dec factory2 5
canned beans  8 15-Mar factory3 10

I used the mail merging to create labels including item's name, price, exp.date and manufacturer. but the Word created just one label for every row in excel... but I need label to be created according to number of boxes... so for chocolate I want to create 15 labels with the same information because I have 15 boxes including chocolate with the same quantities and everything...

How I can tell Word to do this...

How to set page numbering of a large document to start at "1 of 6" after every 6 pages?

Posted: 03 Oct 2014 05:30 AM PDT

I have a large document (over 1300 pages). The page numbering shows 1 of 1300, 2 of 1300, and so on.

I need for the document to show 1 of 6, 2 of 6, 3 of 6, 4 of 6, 5 of 6, 6 of 6 -- and start over at 1 of 6 -- and repeat throughout the document.

How do I achieve this?

Normal.dotm template overwritten during an update?

Posted: 03 Oct 2014 05:02 AM PDT

On all three of my computers, my highly customized normal.dotm was overwritten on the same day with an essentially blank new template. I have a feeling this happened because of some Office update. I didn't delete the old template (which would have created a blank new one). The disappearance means I have lost all of my macros, styles, and keyboard shortcuts.

Has anyone else seen this happen?

Are there any secret hiding places for template backups?

Thanks,

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 04:57 PM PDT

Word 2013, Windows 8.1, Brand new Lenovo with 8GB RAM. Brand new dual HP Pavilion 23bw screens. The Word file is only 51MB, and it loads up just fine. It scrolls quickly for a while then starts bogging down, then reaches failure status where too many jpegs don't populate at all. Instead there is an empty space where they occur, and I can click on it to get a perimeter, but the jpeg doesn't appear. I have to play with the file, scrolling back and forth, resizing the vacant perimeter, or closing and reloading.....my working RAM is optimized, but if you'll walk me through possible solutions we can look at my settings again......or is it some other problem......thanks......

DELETING Movable Bloody Lines form Word 2010

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 04:54 PM PDT

Dear God, I am sick to death trying to log in to this pile of manure!!

Lines across the page in Word 2010 documents - they can be moved up and down with the mouse like they are some sort of section dividing line.

But the obnoxious swines cannot be selected and CANNOT BE DELETED.

I want to be rid of the swines forever. If I copy some text to another document, these **** things come with it. Even when they were not visible in the original.

How do I do it?

Document originally a downloaded web page which I have reformatted - BUT THE WEB PAGE DID NOT HAVE THESE MOVABLE BLOODY LINES ON IT!

I am going out of my mind.

Thank You

Word 2013 doubles file size when images grouped with captions

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 03:36 PM PDT

When I used Word 2003, I was able to bring in a figure, insert a caption, and then group the image and caption without any problems. In Word 2013, it turns out that once I group the image, suddenly the file size jumps way up. Looking at the images in the document XML, I see that Word has taken the original image file and then created an exact duplicate as a PNG file. It seems to do this with TIF files and even PNG files (creating another PNG file)..and JPG seems to lead to a duplicate JPG. Applying the option to delete the editing info from the images has no effect, but then again, I'm not changing the original image at all anyway.

Is there any way to have Word 2013 stop doing this so that I can only have *one* image for each inserted image instead of two? The file size problem ratchets up very quickly....

Thanks!

Hi, Richard,

I would try using the compatibility mode of Windows to run the installation
program with Windows 95 / 98 compatibility.

Also, keep in mind that OEM software--if it was pre-installed on an older
system--may not run legally or functionally on a new system.

If that doesn't help, can you post the exact error message?

Well you are right that the second configuration .msp that you deploy will
not remove office 2003, nor can you run a command from the configuration file
either.

You are also right that if you do a msiexec /x it will get all of Office
2003.

I don't know what version office 2003 you are running either. In my test
environment I am running Office 2003 Professional. My guid is
{90110409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}. If your Guid is the same you can use
step two just as I did. If your Guid is different you will have to change
that part.
You can find your guid here...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall

It will be similiar to mine.... on the right side in regedit confirm by
looking for DisplayName

Here is what I have done to repro what you are doing.

#1 Created an .MSP that upgrades Outlook and Infopath. (This works to remove
the previous versions as well)
#2 Running the following command that will remove 2003 Excel, Publisher,
PowerPoint, and Word for Office 2003 and it will leave Access.

MSIEXEC /I {90110409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}
REMOVE="EXCELFiles,PubPrimary,PPTFiles,DocumentIma gingUtils,XDOCSFiles,WORDFiles"

#3 Running a second .msp that installs the other Office 2007 features.

Did you read the EULA and are you within what it say's as far as installing on another computer.

Cut and paste text from Word to Publisher

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 01:04 PM PDT

I can cut text from Word to Publisher and it works perfectly but when I try to create Multilevel text when I cut and paste it into Publisher then I lose the formatting for the most part.  Pretty much the text comes out fine but things like tabs, dot leaders alignments, etc. don't seem to transfer.  I have been able to transfer file as a picture but it just looks fuzzy and unprofessional.  Publisher does not have any multilevel functions that I can find so I'm out of options.  Can anyone help?

Far from intuitive (Word 2013)

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 01:03 PM PDT

I'm not one to go to forums to voice my opinion. I find that most people who complain on forums are just looking for something to complain about.

But when i'm trying to use a word processor to do something as simple as type a document with irregular spacing and i get forced into some autospacing that is not easily fixed that is complete and utter *swear word*. I use technology all the time and this is a far from easy issue to fix. No simple resolution even came from searching your own help menu or searching google.

You think your taking one step forward with office when all I've noticed is two steps back with every new addition. It's one thing to make options more readily available but keep your friggin grubby paws of my paper, off of what i am typing, stop trying to make live easier by literally ruining all motivation i had to write because the formating of my document is now trashed half way through.

And yes, I've looked in the "autoformatting" menu of word, the problem is with forcing me to double space after every time i hit enter when i think i clearly can hand hitting enter twice for the situations that require it. And yes, spacing is set to single spaced.  This is a direct issue with the system trying to "learn" my behavior and assuming just because i double space after some things it think's i want to double space after everything.

Dealing with Styles in Someone Else's Document?

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 12:47 PM PDT

As happens often, I recently received a document generated by someone outside my company, and I need to edit it.

Everything was going fine, until I cut a paragraph and moved it.  When I pasted it, the paragraph was in a style that appears completely random.  Font, size and line-spacing that appears nowhere else in the document.

It seems that when I cut and pasted the paragraph, Word thought it helpful to import a random style set from my computer, rather than use the one in the document.  When I opened Styles and style inspector, I could not find the original style and could not figure out an easy way to re-format the paragraph to what it was.  I manually reformatted the paragraph.  But then, every time I moved something else, or added a heading, Word again chose seemingly random styles.

Is there a way to address this?  I assume there must be, since almost any business will have to constantly deal with documents being sent from one company to another.

1)  Can I keep the original formatting and edit the document without Word screwing it up for no reason?

2)  Can I easily apply my own preferred style set to the document?

3)  Is there an accepted way for dealing with this?

Thanks in advance.   You all are a great help.

Word-document size

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 11:32 AM PDT

On opening saved file-documents in Word, I find the pages automatically resize themselves to less than the zoom size I saved them as. Why does this occur?

Applying bullets to a single line bullets everything in the document.

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 11:25 AM PDT

Every time I try to add a single bullet to a line, Word 2010 ends up processing for a second and then applies a bullet to every paragraph (including header/footer and tables) in the document.  I can get my desired result by clicking undo once.

This is a large document that was behaving properly until recently.  I'm not sure what I did to cause this and can't figure out how to undo it.

I have 'Normal' style used for the text I'm trying to manipulate.

How to stop Styles from changing downloaded documents

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 08:37 AM PDT

HI - I work extensively with Styles in Word to format a series of big documents. So I have done a lot of tweaking to get the right style/format.

The problem is when I download a document and open it in Word it applies changes to my formatting. Now, I don't know specifically what style or template it is applying, so I want to return my Styles Library to default/empty. Does anyone know how to do that? I can rebuild my library of Styles, but can't correct what seems like arbitrary changes in my documents. If any one can help with this, I would be immensely grateful.

VENTING BELOW

As it stands right now, I would gladly abandon this ridiculous program and find something that behaves in some predictable fashion.

Setting up "a Form", "List", "Mail Merg" or other document type to deal with a need?

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 07:16 AM PDT

I am one member of a Jazz Band and at the request of the Leader, I have been trying to sort out a method where he could provide all the members of the Band with a "playlist" for each of the up and coming Gigs we are to perform at.

At present we have a repertoir of about 150 tunes and these are currently stored as a database with 6 headings :- "Id" , "Tune Name", "Key" "Misc", "Page" and "Arrangement". The "Id" field is a number and the rest are "text".

The Leader would like to be able would like to be able to individually select the Tunes from the Database list by using the "Id" number for each tune name to construct a new list, one tune at a time. That new list of about 10 tunes, making 10 rows each showing the complete data for each tune. I assume I would need to provide him with a Table of some form in which the first cell would call up the various Database "Id" numbers and the rest of the table row would be filled with the "Tune Name" etc.

I have tried several different methods but only managed to reproduce the whole Database List.

I would be most grateful for any help in this matter.

Cannot Open Word 2013 Program or Existing Documents in Windows 8.1

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 06:41 AM PDT

I have Office for Home & Student 2013 loaded on an HP Pavilion 27xi, running Windows 8.1.

Since the upgrade to 8.1, I am unable to open the Word program or my documents in other way but safe mode, which of course, limits program features.  Excel, Power Point, and One Note open as they should.

When I look at Properties for each program, the Target and Folder paths appear correct with each step the same until reaching the program name.  In addition, when I do click on the Word program icon or on an already existing document, I can hover over the program icon and see that either the program or document has opened...somewhere.  It appears in miniature.  I cannot click on the miniature program or existing document screen and bring it to full size for creating a new document or editing an old.

I have already tried an uninstall of Office 2013, using Microsoft Fixit, and have then completed a fresh install.  The problem persists.  Can anyone help?  Many thanks in advance!

Just to let everyone know. This sight wasn't really helpful. Comments were
made, but no solutions. When someone posts, it is because they need help
NOW. Sure, I should have formatted the hard disk, I should've...hindsight is
20-20. No real solution was offered. However, I did get it to work and if
anyone else has this problem this is what I did and it worked. Uninstalled
Office Basic 2003. Rebooted. Installed MY OWN PERSONAL version of Office
Basic 2003. Rebooted. Installed Office Professional 2007 Upgrade. Rebooted.
IT WORKS!!!! Yippee!!!

Can you tell us if it is a "retail" version or OEM version of Office?

Annoying situation

Posted: 11 Jul 2007 09:04 AM PDT

Thank you both, JoAnn and Garfield. I followed your advices (a little mix of
them) and the situation is solved. HP is gone from the Office programs. By
the way, upto this moment, those were the only places that appeared, but
Windows came preinstalled, so I will see.
Thank you again,

Neither you nor embraer seem to be able to follow simple instructions.
In the target box, the -f switch needs to be *outside* the quotation
marks, and the osa.exe command needs to be *inside* the quotation marks
(not apostrophes). So the command in the target box should look like:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 12\OSA.EXE" â€"f

Thanks for the answer.
Basically it is a full article that brings all the possible issues
concerning the subjet but it doesn't answer the question regarding Office97.
What will happen to it?

Office 2000 Pro to Office 2003 anything???

Posted: 06 Jul 2007 10:20 AM PDT

(1) You should have uninstalled the Office 2003 free trial software
before you installed your copy of Office 2000.
(2) See answer to (1) above.
(3) Do you really want an answer to that?

Robert --

You need to republish the assignments in each project to "push" the new
method of tracking to each user's timesheet in PWA. Open each project and
click Collaborate - Publish - Republish Assignments, and then click OK.

In the future, please post your Project Server questions to the
microsoft.public.project.server newsgroup. Hope this helps.

Combining a "base" project with other projects

Posted: 23 Sep 2005 11:34 AM PDT

hi Dave,

Your unique_ID will be same across different project files if the same base
file is used to create those projects. You can then using VBA code manipulate
the tasks using uniqueIDs.

Use the fileOpen method to access the tasks in another project and match
compare them with unique IDs using the Task.UniqueID property.

Kind regards,

Hi Dale,

Thanks very much. I didn't think so but as my skills in server are *very*
light, I didn't want to volunteer what could have been incorrect info.

MS Proj-Remove summary task view when using the Using Resource fil

Posted: 23 Sep 2005 07:37 AM PDT

Hi Sunny,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

I would record a new macro to de-select the summaries and another to put
them back. hen I's create 2 new buttons to put on a toolbar from whence you
can achieve what you want by the click of the appropriate button. For
details on how to do this, please have a look at my series on Microsoft
Project in the TechTrax ezine, particularly #16 - Macros, at this site:
http://tinyurl.com/2xbhc or this:

(Perhaps you'd care to rate the article before leaving the site, :)
Thanks.)

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Problem with digital signature

Posted: 23 Sep 2005 03:07 AM PDT

I cross-posted there too.

I think it has something to do with the global macros. When I checked, the
ProojectGlobal macros had a digital certificate that was expired (other
people have this too). When I removed this global certificate, I was able to
digitally sign my macros. However, I found that if I had signed macros in
Project then the digital signature for Excel 2003 didn't work.

I may have give up on this.

Resource Pool offline

Posted: 22 Sep 2005 10:08 PM PDT

Hi,

Something bothers me.
I they replace their file on the exact salme spot why do you have to relink
it?
And can't the pool (in your scenario) reside on a server that is read only
for them but read write for you?

Greetings,

Bulk Upload of task work

Posted: 22 Sep 2005 02:18 AM PDT

Hi,

to get you started, to call Project from another application

Dim PjApp as MSproject.application
set Pjapp=createobject ("MSProject.application")

To open the .mpp file
pjapp.fileopen ... (see the help in the object browser)

To locate the task (I suppose you have the name)
Dim AJob as task
set ajob = activeproject.tasks("The task name")

If you have to locate the task based on an other field you can use the Find
method or loop through the tasks

For each ajob in activeproject.tasks
if not ajob is nothing then

......compare data to check whether it is this task
exit for

end if
nxt ajob

Finally, now comes the tricky part.
You will have to look up, and understand, the TimeScaleValues object and the
TimeScaledata method; you will see that it allows you to defien the monthly
values and you can then import them.

Hope this helps,

Does project has a word strikeout feature?

Posted: 21 Sep 2005 03:01 PM PDT

There is always the possibility of changing the color to Red for
deleted text. Or if it is a task name, you can always put a prefix on
the line like DELETED or OBSOLETE... I'm sure you can come up with a
bunch of options.

If you are trying to delete a task this way, you can always save using
the Baseline and then show both in the gantt chart. In this case the
deleted tasks will not have a "current" line. Deleting, of course will
also delete any history that may have already occurred on that task.

Good luck.

Bulk load of Resources with more than 1 availability

Posted: 21 Sep 2005 03:25 AM PDT

Thanks, I have no idea how to write VBA and need to get this sorted urgently.
I have tried apending the additional availability data directly into the
availability table in an access export but when I reimport into project the
changes have not been affected. Why is this happening and how do I get
ropund it? Appending the data into access seems the best approach but
something is preventing it from working.

Thanks in advance.
