Getting XP docs to display on Windows 7

Posted: 01 Sep 2014 02:05 PM PDT

I have moved Word docs created on an XP machine to my Windows 7 laptop (using a flash drive). Once I copied the docs onto my Windows 7 laptop, the Word docs don't open. Their icon is red, and when I try to open them, it thinks I'm opening graphic files. How can I get my Word docs to open correctly on my laptop?

Mouse "Stop" when an Object is Inserted in MS Word 2013 and 2010

Posted: 01 Sep 2014 01:07 PM PDT

Hello guys,

Environment:

MS Word 2010 and 2013

MS Windows 7

I have a specif template (normal.dotm), where there is a simple VB function.

If it was necessary I can share it to solve this problem.

Problem:

When try to insert a Object, such a shortcut inside the document, by clicking: Insert tab >> Object >> Object >> tab Create from File --> Browse and chose --> tick "Link to File" and "Display as icon".

Normally it supposed to work normally, but doesn't in my case.

The problem is, when the icon is inserted I can't select with the mouse pointer, for example, double-click is used to select a single word, and after the icon insertion this behavior doesn't work anymore. The right-button do not work work as well.

It is very strange, because almost the same code is used on MS Excel and MS PowerPoint with the same objective and works perfect.

Thanks in advance,

Felipe

page numbering on Word 2013

Posted: 01 Sep 2014 12:09 PM PDT

Hello. Hopefully an easy thing to remedy- I have created a large Word document with several sections, some of which have their own numbering (i, ii and 1,2,3). The only difficulty is the first page which says '1' at the bottom and I don't want a page number of the first page. Every time I try to delete this one page number it seems to mess up the rest of the document which is numbered appropriately. Hopefully you can make sense of this and provide some guidance, thanks.

Updating Selected Formulas in WORD 2013

Posted: 01 Sep 2014 11:51 AM PDT

Hi

In the 2010 version of WORD I can use the F9 key to update the values of formulas in a table.  In WORD 2013 (Home and Student) this doesn't work. I have to update all fields in 2013 manually and that is a pain when you have a number of fields.  Does anyone have a way to do this?

Printing table within text box

Hi all,

I have a table with a text box which is also rotated by 90 degrees.

When i try to print this page directly to printer or print/save as .pdf it rotates the text box back 90 degrees and just prints the lines of tables.

Any suggests would be helpful.

Temp files in desktop are not deleted after closing the word file.

Posted: 01 Sep 2014 04:28 AM PDT

Whenever I open a Word 2010 document, I get a hidden icon on my desktop sometimes with a tilde dollar before the icon name. as of my understanding it should be deleted after closing the word file because it's a temporary buffer file for the word doc, But sometime this Icon not deleted after restarting the PC. I must have done something strange to cause them, but I know not what. What can I do to eliminate them completely.

Excel database not updating in Word

Posted: 31 Aug 2014 09:05 PM PDT

I have a (largish) database in Excel 2010 that I have updated. When I do a mail merge into Word 2010, the old data is still showing and the new data isn't. I tried saving the *.xlsx file with a new name to a different folder but the old data keeps coming up. I could edit the fields in Word, but that would be very time consuming. TIA

Autotext/Autocorrect

Posted: 31 Aug 2014 07:33 AM PDT

I use many autotext as a medical transcriptionist.  I now have Windows 7, Word 2013 and for the last four months my autotext just disappear.  After reentering them over and over I decided to try autocorrect and the same problems happens over and over.   It seems that my autocorrect that were entered four months ago when I upgraded remain, but it any new ones that I enter that disappear.  All old and new autotext disappear.  They stick around for 1, 2, 3, 4 weeks and then disappear.  I really need some help for a "Word Dummy".  I have looked possible issues of the normal.dot but not savvy enough to figure that out.  Thanks in advance anyone.

Transferring Office XP setting to Office 2003?

Hi Lee,

Not sure how this may be related to the original topic.
MS Office Home & Student 2007 edition does not include its own email app. You can use Outlook Express on Windows XP, or Windows
Mail on Windows Vista or a 3rd party email client such as Thunderbird or a web based email site if you prefer not to purchase or
install the separate Outlook 2007 trial..

Those are very difficult questions to answer. Much of it is based on opinion
and your own personal situation.

Are you in a corporate environment or are you a home user? If corporate,
Office 2007 could cause problems with non-2007 co-workers. Office 2007 uses,
by default, a new file format. Older versions of Office can read it but will
have to download/install a converter first. However, you have the option of
saving files in the older format. Even if you are a home user, the file
format issue still applies if you share documents with others.

The new ribbon interface is much different than you are used to. It will
take some time finding where MS relocated some functions. If you are patient
and willing to invest time to re-learn, you'll be OK. If not, you may find it
annoying.

So, the answer to your first question is "yes" and "no." Not very helpful
for you, but that's the way it is. "When will you suggest I move to Office
2007?"...that really can't be answered definitively. Perhaps you didn't word
your question the way you meant to. Regardless, you'll just have to try it
for yourself and draw your own conclusions. There is a free trial version you
can download from MS.

Can't re-install Word 2000. Wrong product key

I'm sorry if my meaning is not clear. Let me try again step by step.

This means that the new laptop had MS Works already installed.

This means that as soon as I received my new laptop, I uninstalled MS Works.

I had a legal copy of Office 97 and installed it.

This means that I wanted to upgrade to Word 2000 without buying Office 2000.
So I bought a legal Works 8 bundle, because the bundle contained Word 2000.
(This is a later, different version of Works than the preloaded version.)

So the answer is "Yes".

Can't set Word 2013 as default for .doc or .docx -- double-clicking a document opens Word 2010 instead

Posted: 31 Aug 2014 12:30 PM PDT

It should be clear from the title, but I have both Office 2010 and Office 2013 installed. I recently re-installed Office 2013 (the Office 365 installed software version; I'm not using the web apps version or on-demand version). Things were working fine before and after the re-installation, then I had to answer a question for someone about Word 2010. I opened a document in Word 2010, and had to wait for the "Installing" screen to complete, even though I had previously applied the NOREREG keys to the registry in the Office 14 as well as Office 15 folders of HKCU.

Other things I've done:

  • I've right-clicked on a file, and from the contextual menu chose Open With > Choose Default Program, clicked Browse, and navigated to Office 15/WINWORD.EXE. With the "Always use..." box ticked, I clicked OK. The document opens in Word 2010.
  • In the Set Default Programs dialog, Word 2013 is already set for all the documents Word can open except for .odt documents.
  • I have Word 2013 pinned to my Start Menu. When I hover over its icon and wait for the Recent Documents flyout to appear, I click on one of them, and it opens in Word 2010.
  • Likewise on the Taskbar.

You can see from the things I've already done that I'm no rookie at these scary machines they call "computers". In fact, I've had this problem once before in a previous life; I just don't know what it was that fixed it. There's got to be a registry setting somewhere that's gone awry. Just point me to it and I'll be on my happy way. (Just FYI, the other Office apps act the same way -- .pptx files open in PPT 2010, .xlsx files open in Excel 2010, etc.)

Thanks in advance for reading this far, and for your help.

Solving for t using the equation editor in Office 365

Posted: 31 Aug 2014 12:27 PM PDT

Operating System:  Windows 8.1 64 bit.

Office Version:  Office 365 Home Premium

I am taking a grad level psychology class for Statistics in the Behavioral Sciences.  Apparently, the equation editor in Word does not have a built in equation for computing Z-scores or T-values with three fraction levels.  If you try to enter an equation manually and solve the equation, you get a pop-up stating there is an error in the equation Microsoft math cannot solve the equation.  Even trying the built-in equations and entering the values does not work.  If you click on "tell me more" you get a message stating Microsoft has nothing to recommend.

If I remove the top part of the equation, and only use the bottom half for the square root, it will solve for t.  Apparently Microsoft does not recognize the top part, the mean of one sample minus the mean of the other sample, or the number of participants for one group plus the number of participants for the other group divided by the two groups multiplied together.

How do you get the equation editor to solve the entire equation?

Thanks.

Is there a way to nest sub-list inside a listed paragraph

Posted: 31 Aug 2014 10:47 AM PDT

Hi,

having moved up from 2010 to 2013 version, I can see that Multilevel listing remains a real pain.

One thing which seems to have become difficult is to include a list inside a listed paragraph style like:

1. Because of the following reasons

1.1. Change in menus

1.2. Unfamiliar Icons

I find it even more difficult to replicate this

2. I wish for an AI-software that would recognize this pattern and either show me how to do it or just asks me if this is what I want.

3. Then I could either

       3.1. say yes or

       3.2. no or

3.3 even ask it to have another go

at recognizing the pattern which would it easier to turn and/or list into lists in the middle of a sentence.

Anyone?

Hi

I cannot "save as" when using word, excel and ppt Keep getting (word for example) word is not responding then app closes. I can edit exisiting docs and use "save" only happens when trying to save new docs.

I have ran diagnostics and there was no fault found. I was prompted to run this as it said i had a number of crashes recently using office 2007 home and students edition.

My laptop is using Windows Vista and is up to date latest updates.

I think the problem could be my printer, hp photosmart 5510 as I never had these problems when I had a different printer.

Has anyone else experienced similar problem? Pleaser note I have to use Microsoft Office Word as "Office Topic" but the issue is with ppt and excel too.

Typing slows to crawl in Word 2013 comment function/track changes

Posted: 31 Aug 2014 10:15 AM PDT

I'm using Word 2013 on a Windows 8.1 machine, but I had this same problem on a Windows 7 machine.

When I try to add a comment to a document using the track changes feature, typing in the revisions/comment pane becomes so slow as to be almost unusable.

Typing in the rest of the document is fine/normal. It's only when I'm trying to type (or edit) a comment that the typing slows way, way, way down.

I did a Google search and noticed that this was a big problem with Word 2007, and a lot of people suggested fixes. Not so with Word 2013, as far as I can tell. (That is, I can't find a lot of other people having this problem in Word 2013.)

Any advice would be welcome. Thanks!

Re-installed Office 2010 in a Windows 8 Gateway Computer will not open previously created Office Documents from that same program without doing so from inside of an Open Office session.

Posted: 30 Aug 2014 09:45 PM PDT

I have a problem with Office 2010: I Re-installed it on 8/29/14 after having to restore my Gateway Windows 8 computer after Cox.net caused it to crash 2 days ago and now it won't open .DOCX word documents- that I created before I reinstalled the program; ( this is how it now identifies all of the files I had previously created with Office 2010 before the crash)–It won't open them by simply clicking on the new type Icon that distinguishes them as .DOCX type files instead of the original extensions. A message pops up saying that I need to Install Office 2010 to open this type of file.

The same document that it won't open that way-opens just fine if I open Word first, (I have already reinstalled Office 2010, using the correct product code Key that came with the Office Suite-Office Professional that came with it.) and then while inside of the Word program I go to File/Open/ and drill down to where this file is saved- I click on the icon at this point a Plus 2010nd presto-it opens right up.

Is there a way to simply tweak Office 2010 that is now re-installed on my computer to see these word documents that are now identified as .DOCX XML documents, the first time I click on them or is the path previously described (have to be inside of an Office program) the only way to open them now.

Page Numbering Issue Word 2007

Posted: 30 Aug 2014 05:37 PM PDT

Hi,

I have a question regarding page numbering in Word 2007.

I have a 48-page document, in which I wish the page numbering to commence on page 3. When attempting to do this, having divided the document with a continuous section break to form two sections, Word is still counting the first two pages, i.e., on page 3, the page numbering displays 'Page 1 of 48'; I need it to count only from page 3, so that it would instead display 'Page 1 of 46', omitting the first two pages of the document from the page count.

I've phrased this query very clumsily, but any help would be most gratefully received.

Press Enter when taking notes without adding spacing

Posted: 30 Aug 2014 04:04 PM PDT

Split from this thread.

I most commonly use word to take notes, make lists or outlines. compose ideas and thoughts, etc. As default, I write a line that represents an idea or point, want to go to the next so hit 'Enter' and don't intend or want a new paragraph.

The solution would be to make changing line spacing simple with an obvious toolbar button or menu item. I'm no fan of the ribbon style toolbar which, in my opinion, makes word more difficult to use than it needs to be.

You'll have to read the docs for your mail server.

Perhaps if you state what ftp and mail servers you're using and

Aha, thank you. Indirectly it also told me what I must have done.

I downloaded switchdesk and ran it. That told me that gnome wasn't
installed, which I know it was, and told me what to do to install gnome. I
did that, and it actuslly only installed about half a dozen or so
packages, the rest having already been installed. At which point it all
ran perfectly.

When I first installed, I had gone through and added all the extra bits I
wanted, and got rid of stuff I thought I didn't need, including a load of
bluetooth packages, and these were the only packages that were reinstalled.

Even though I don't have bluetooth hardware on my machine, gnome appears
to still need the packages installed to run. I guess you really do learn
something new every day.

Many thanks.

router not routing?

article <ekmr4q$q0h$org>, freightcar wrote:

Yes, and in general those systems are not meant to be accessible from the
world. One example - two of my ISPs use RFC1918 addresses for the internal
servers meant to be accessed by customers, and NOT be the world at large.
This sometimes shows up when doing a traceroute, where such an address is
assigned to intermediate routers. This usage is to save "real" IP
addresses for globally accessible systems. It may come as a shock to some,
but those routers don't offer services (other than routing packets), and
the provider really doesn't want you to be able to connect to them.

The other reason for handing out RFC1918 addresses and NATing them is for
situations where the ISP is allowing customers to be clients ONLY and
not allowing them to run servers. If the customer wants to run a server,
they can buy the more expensive 'business' service (though the official
reason for using RFC1918 addresses may be "to protect you" from being
turned into zombie servers).

That way if you overlook something, you are (over)protected.

Office 365 (Word Problems)

Posted: 30 Aug 2014 11:24 AM PDT

I just purchased Office 365 Personal two days ago.  I have loaded it on to my desk top computer (Windows 7- Home Premium.  All applications work very well except Word.  Every time I open Word and attempt to make any selection of the templates, I get the following message;  "Microsoft Word has stopped working.

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available". The entire program (365) closes.  Never got a solution.

Please help.

Office Word 2013 will not center text on custom size page

Posted: 30 Aug 2014 11:06 AM PDT

I bought Word 2013 in May 2014.  Now I want to center text words

on custom size paper.

It will center the text on 8.5x11 inch paper but not custom.

My printer (HP) company has check the printer and it is fine.

I am not very tech savy and centering text on custom sizes is the ONLY special

task I want to accomplish.  No two sided printing or other stuff.

Can you give me step by step instructions????
Yesterday I spent over 6 hours trying to get help by phone and got hung up on

5 times, went through at least 10 representatives and the last one said I must pay

$99 to get help for one month.

All I want is the Word to work for one "extra" function, it is only three months old.

Needless to say, I am extremely unhappy with Microsoft.

I think I have Windows 7 but it maybe 8.....I just got the new computer in May 2014.

Macro to create CSV in MS Word

Posted: 30 Aug 2014 10:20 AM PDT

I'd like to create a macro that will skip thru each control on a Word template (i.e., plain text, checkbox, combobox, etc.) in order on the page and write out the data in each control to a comma separated file.

I've used the record option to create macros before, but unclear on how to program this type of function.

Anyone have any ideas that could help me out.  Tips and/or sample code would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark

Editing the points of a line in Word 2013

Posted: 30 Aug 2014 10:01 AM PDT

In previous versions of Word, I was able to draw complex shapes by inserting a line, then adding points and editing them. In Word 2013, when I click on the line I've inserted (Insert > Shapes > choose straight line), the Edit Shape option is greyed out.

Choosing Curve or Freeform or Scribble doesn't help because Word "controls" these shapes.

Is there a way to draw irregular shapes of my own design in Word 2013? Thanks.

Microsoft Office Home and Student: Problem window when opening Word or Excel

Posted: 30 Aug 2014 07:53 AM PDT

I have a problem with my Office programs. When I try to open Word I get this message, "We're sorry, but Word has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly. Word will need to be closed as a result. Would you like us to repair now?" The thing is that when I press the "Repair Now" option, it doesn't do anything. I have also tried the task of opening it in safemode by pressing the start button with the R key, only to have that message appear again. I have also tried uninstalling the software and then entering the same code off the package to install it again, but sadly that has failed to do anything. The programs ran great a month ago, but over the past 2 weeks this has just happened out of nowhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Adding a row in a Word (2007) table does not follow format of previous row

Posted: 30 Aug 2014 06:37 AM PDT

For example, I put 6 points above on my text paragraph. Then I add a new row by pressing 'tab' at the last cell and a new row appears. But the new row does not have 6 points above the paragraph and I have to format every row I add. I remember that I never had to do that in version 2003 of word.

I don't know how to make a new row follow the format of the previous row.

Thank you.

Import RTF into Word with 'extras'

Posted: 30 Aug 2014 04:53 AM PDT

Hi there,

Sorry about the vague title but I was unsure of how to phrase the question.

I want to import an RTF file into Word but I wish to know if there is a way I can insert tags into the RTF file that will perform certain functions in Word during the import.

For example - could I insert a tag into the RTF document that word would translate as the start of a section or perhaps a tag that would add the marked text into the footer.

I think the answer will probably be 'no' but I thought I'd ask the Word experts.

Hope my question makes sense.

Lee

Virtual keyboard popping up when I touch document page

Posted: 30 Aug 2014 12:32 AM PDT

I am using Word 2013, windows 8.1, Lenovo thinkpad Yoga S1 in tablet mode.

Whenever I touch the page inside a document in word, the virtual keyboard pops up immediately.

I may not want to type anything, I may just want to scroll, and my finger took  long time, or I want to select, or just reading and thinking.

How can I disable auto keyboard for word? and keep it popping up manually.

How do I report Security Vulnerability in Microsoft Office 365

Posted: 29 Aug 2014 07:42 PM PDT

Hello I posted an earlier discussion post, but was never looked at, or responded to, so I'm rephrasing as a question.

How do I report a security vulnerability in Microsoft Office 365 Version 15.0.4641.1003 (current at time of post)?

When selecting "Manage Account" under Account settings, the default browser will try to open an URL in a new tab. The URL is not percent encoded and if the URL contains a space character (in particular the MachineKey field value in the query string) then the default browser (affects Firefox or Chrome) will attempt to open multiple URLs/tabs. For my particular MachineKey, a connection to a spam/malicious website website is established each time (occasionally blocked by my antivirus). It would be worse if any of these websites were phishing for Microsoft account details, as every user is expecting to enter their account/password on the correct tab.

For example a URL of the form:

  http://o15.officeredir.microsoft.com/r/rlidOfficeManagementPortal?ver=15&app=winword.exe&...&MachineKey=12345-678-900000 XXX

will attempt to connect to "XXX", despite "12345-678-900000 XXX" being the MachineKey

This was determined by examining the 'command line' column of processes in Task Manager and verified with run.

Internet explorer will however take multiple tokens on the command line and interpret as one URL, but really this URL should be surrounded in quotation marks or percent encoded, so that all browsers will open up a link properly.

I have tried reporting this to Microsoft Office telephone support, but have been disappoint that this issue has not been escalated, but rather having been told that this a problem with Firefox and Chrome.

Even if this was a problem with Firefox or Chrome, shouldn't MS still percent encode the URL so that their customers (many of which are using firefox/chrome) are not redirected to phishing/malicious websites?

Word goes dysfunctional when saving

Posted: 29 Aug 2014 05:26 PM PDT

Whenever I save in Word 365 the program freezes/grays out for a few minutes while a "Not Responding" shows up in the title bar. After those few minutes it goes back to normal. I don't mind Word needing time to save, but the freezing up/not responding thing is starting to get annoying and hinder my work. I also use Powerpoint and it doesn't happen there, so this is a Word thing. It occurs no matter where I save (hard drive or Skydrive). Is there a way to fix it (preferably where I wouldn't have to uninstall and reinstall for the like 10th time)?

Changing default font in Word 365

Posted: 29 Aug 2014 03:57 PM PDT

In earlier versions of Word, changing the font of Normal style in a document would change all of the styles based on Normal. In Office 365, nothing happens.

I am actually trying to change the default font for all new documents. I have opened Normal.dotm. All my 40 or so styles are ultimately based on Normal, but if I change Normal (in this case from TNR to Arial) again nothing happens. What has changed? I could go to each of the styles and change each one, but that seems to be a waste of time, and anyway defeats the point of having all styles based on Normal and won't work in existing documents.

Maybe my problem comes from having continued to upgrade the template from Word 2003, through 2007, 2010 and now 365. I imagine that the problem would not occur with a new Normal.dotm. Or has MS changed the system so that Normal no longer drives all styles. Help please.

Please don't tell me to go to Home, Font, Set as Default, as that does not work. Or to Manage Styles, Set Defaults which equally does not work (see pics). I have also disabled all Add-ins and restarted Word.
