I am trying to download transcript from a recorder to my computer.  I tried downloading it in Windows Media Player and I synced it as directed but when I remove the recorder

I thought I used to be able to do this, now the Research Window opens but returns "No results found. Please search again". I even type in simple words and use "All Research Sites"  and do a search, same thing.

Mail merge to 4-4x5 postcards

On a landscape 8.5"X11" sheet of paper, I created 4-4x5 postcards.  I now want to do a mail merge to address them more easily.  I am having issues getting the mail merge to print 4 different addresses on one sheet (4-4x5).  How can I make this happen???

I am trying to format page numbers in Word in Windows 7 Pro.  In previous versions of Word, we used to set up a 3-part footer, with the page number appearing in the lower right-hand corner.  We could just type in the page number in the format we use, 1-2-3, with "3" being the page number; and all was good with the world.  I've spent over 2 hours trying to figure out how to do this in Windows 7 without jumping through hoops, and am at a complete loss.  Please help!

I have a user who bought MS Office 2013 Home and Student edition.

When they opened Word a small screen would appear, this was called "Take a Tour" and showed how to accomplish tasks.

This screen stopped showing up and the user would like it back again, any help would be appreciated.

When any of the other applications are opened, such as MS Excel 2013 the "Take a Tour" screen opens up as well.

What is the Best Approach for the Insertion of High Quality Drawings into a Word Document?

I am writing a book in Word, and it has fifty (50) or more drawing images.  

I have purchased Adobe Acrobat XI Pro, for converting the hand-drawn images into pdf's (with text).

Upon insertion, I find two (2) issues present:

1.  The images are degraded.  (In Adobe Acrobat, I reduced the scanned images by 50% -- but they still look and print great from Adobe.)

2.  When I attempt to save the (Word) file after insertion of the pdf images from Adobe Acrobat, the ONLY way it can be saved is as a .pdf file -- so I'm confused.  

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Inserting a file without the inserted document losing its formatting

I tried to insert some documents into my Word 2007 report as appendices. However, the documents I was inserting didn't keep their original formatting. Is there any way around this, so that they stay just as they look when they stand independently?

Envelopes won't print.

 I have Microsoft 8.1 and an HP Office Jet Pro 8600 Plus.  I type letters with Word and Initially could print envelopes using the "mailings" feature.  After a few weeks, envelopes would only print intermittently.  Now envelopes won't print at all.

I've tried many suggestions from people on various sites.  I ran a piece of plain paper through to see if I had the envelope in the wrong place.  No print anyplace on the paper.  We re-installed the printer drivers, and that didn't help. 

This is not a problem of the printer not getting the message to print; it picks it up and runs it through, but out comes an envelope or a paper with no print, even though the preview pane shows that there will be an address and a return address.

On micro word, somehow I messed up the top arrow key and when no push it "table" appears at the top of the screen and messes up my document. I can't backspace or make corrections, and also when I email the doc, there is a "H" in front of one my sentences that I can't delete. How can I get my arrow key back to normal and delete that H? Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I use a browser blocker (Freedom.com) to prevent distractions while I'm writing.  Too often, while I'm working on an MS Word document, I'll inadvertently hit the mouse's right-click button.  MS Word or my MacBook right away thinks I'm trying to access Word Help online.  But, of course, with the blocker on, I can't go online.  Nonetheless, MS Word or my MacBook insists on trying: the little "Hold On!" disks spins and spins, seemingly forever; meanwhile, I can't work.  The only solution I've found so far is to Force Quit the blocker and Restart.  Is there another – quicker! – way to let MS Word and my MacBook know I'm not interested in seeing Word Help and to quit trying to access the Internet? 

Text in tables automatically left justifies when the document is closed and opened

I have a Word 2007 document with several tables in it.  Each time I save the document with centered text within the tables, close it, and reopen it, the text within the tables becomes left justified.  I then have to tediously fix every table.  This only happens in the one document.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In Word 2013, I am trying to embed links like "http://xyz.com/doc.pdf#page=2". I find that Ctrl-clicking on such links in Word sends me to "http://xyz.com/doc.pdf%20-%20page=2"which leads to 404 page not found messages. And if I publish the document as a blog post to WordPress, using Word's built-in facility for blog publication, the "#page=2" part is completely removed.

My default browser is Chrome, which properly handles the links when directly pasted into the address bar.

Is there an easy fix? It looks like a bug to me.

Zoom only the text and not the images?

In several Word 2010 documents I use the Calibri text-font with size = 10 as the default body font which fits my needs for printouts of these documents.

However, as I use a 2560 x 1600 screen resolution on a 30" monitor, this text is too small for comfortable reading on the screen, so I use a 120% - 140% zoom in these Word documents.

However, when using this zoom factor, images inside the text always appear somewhat blurred, as they are zoomed too.

So my question is: Is there a setting in Word 2010 which zoomes only the text and not the images? (When using the Weblayout display mode).

Can you start Word and create a new document?  If you save that and close it and then re-open it, can you edit it?

In the case of the documents that are locked, from where did you get them?  Were they attached to an email message or downloaded from a website?

A: I have  two versions of Office : both are installed

1)  2007 Office was bought way back in a CD 

2)   Home & Student 2013  was bought around 6 months ago & downloaded  from Microsoft.com

 I use Windows 8.1.

When a PDF document is converted to Word.   With macro enabled,  I still cannot gain  access to edit the document .

Should I uninstall 2007  ?

Equation editor not working all of a sudden

Dear Sir/Mdm,

My equation editor 3.0 was working perfectly fine until last week, when I tried to open the editor. An error message comes out which shows

" The program used to create this object is Equation. That program is either not installed on your computer or it is not responding. To edit this object, install Equation or ensure that any dialog boxes in Equation are closed."

I have tried closing all documents and reopening the documents, as well as restarting my computer. I had scanned my computer to ensure that there is no malware which is causing this issue. However this issue still persists.

I have an important document which needs this equation function that is to be completed over the weekend and I sincerely hope that anyone can help to reply to it. THank you.

Word 2013 navigation pane for Arabic headings

I am trying to view navigation pane for an Arabic document with headings,

the problem is:

- Arabic headings are right aligned

- Indents to show heading level in navigation panes are left aligned

- so all Arabic headings are shown right aligned with no indents.

This is very confusing as we cannot tell by looking what level is the heading

Back in Word 2010, headings in navigation pane were outlined with  box, making it easier to recognize levels.

Is there a way to right align the indents in the navigation pane for Arabic (best solution), or use outline boxes like Word 2010 style (at least)?

I have added a custom Ribbon to group my frequently used controls and macros, all good so far.

How can I add new icon images to the Rename window, so I can add the images (icons) I used to have in 2003 menu for my macros?

I have the images as 16x16 px BMP 8bit image files, which I believe is acceptable for the system, but I dont know how to add the new icon to the custom item in my group.

Another Word Stopped working problem

I've been upgrading a number of machines to Office 2013, both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.  On some machines with some documents, Word stops with Even ID 1000.  Faulting module wwlib.dll. After office is updated the event log reports the same event ID, faulting module: Unknown.  I've been through Doug Robbins list of ever growing problems; disabled all add-ins, removed printer drivers, fully updated, safe mode, clean boot, repair, re install etc.  

The common factor is that all the problem machines either have or have had Adobe Captivate 7 installed.  I can replicate the issue by installing the Captivate 7 trial version on a clean build machine. Uninstalling Captivate is not a cure unless the machine can be restored to an earlier time pre Captivate

I accidentally discovered that Word will open these documents if the ribbon bar is minimized, Word will crash only when the "HOME" tab is selected. Digging further, if the ribbon bar is customized by removing by removing the "Styles" group the document can be opened and the  Home Tab selected.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated 

Word and PowerPoint stopped working when trying to save as

Hi, since a couple of days I have the problem that both PowerPoint and Word crash as soon as I choose "Save as". Or across all Office programs when I select "Change Picture". I've tried a couple of solutions I found on the web (repaired Office, deactivated add-ins, changed hardware acceleration), but those didn't really state saving as or changing a picture as the problem, so nothing helped accordingly.

When I start the programs in save mode though everything works fine.

Any ideas? I have Office 2013 Professional on Windows 7.

Corrupted Office Data Recovery Errors

I had a few volumes of books i was writing and my hard drive decided to die, i managed to recover most of the files and when i opened them i got a error "microsoft word cannot open file because it is an unsupported file type" of some sort, i opened it in 2003, 2007 2010 and 2013, same error, cant do open and repair or open in wordpad, although i managed to open the document in openoffice with everything intact. i want to work with office so when i go to copy all the data along with the pictures, it only pasted text with messed up formatting. i have no intention to edit four volumes of 400 pages, is there any better way anyone can suggest, please help i have been trying for four days now. I can see the data fine in openoffice but not in word, 

Also it takes a very long time to open these broken files in opeoffice but it work, i dont want to switch programs. 

I had to do data recovery scans initially so i am not sure how to retrieve the .asd files, if there is a way to fix this via that route please let me know

Hi,I have a problem trying to reload my OFFICE 97 CD on my new Dell PC with Windows 8.

The dialog box will not let me enter more than 1 number of the CD KEY code.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get round this loading problem please?.

hi, i need a solution pronto, iust recently bought the Microsoft office 2013 student, it ceased to work the word was first and now excel,i have  tried to  repair , uninstalled it reinstalled it using the fixit tool, i ran the quick repair, evrytime i try to open it it says it must close as an error is preventing it, my pc is fully protected from  viruses and stuff. i need to solve this

boot into the rescue mode (you can achieve this by typing linux rescue
at the prompt that appears when you boot from the redhat install cd)

Skip any "Configure network interfaces" dialog that appears.


now type the following commands:

chroot /mnt/sysimage

grub-install /dev/hda (replace /dev/hda with your name of the hdd)

While I agree with you that it would be nice to do an incremental
component-by-component test battery for every server one puts on the
line, I've never heard of any IT department having the staff resources
to do that kind thing for small systems. I've heard of that kind of
detail being paid to clusters and high-availability systems, though.
We don't build many white-box servers anymore, but, occasionally, we
try to stretch our dollars using what's in inventory. Pulled
components may get an extra life or two this way. We'll let a unit run
a week or so and check the logs for trouble before putting it into
production, but that's about all we can realistically hope to do.

kernel /boot/<your kernel> root=/dev/hda2 [any parameters you wish to
pass]

once again, if you are using a scsi drive, change the hd to sd above.

Once you are sure that the parameters are correct, press 'b' to boot
your linux kernel.

If you receive any kernel panic errors, recompile the kernel. You will
most likely need a LiveCD to do this.

Once you are booted into your linux environment, you should review
/boot/grub/menu.lst and make the corrections for your linux kernel boot
instruction.

I use GRUB 0.97 on a Compaq Presario 2188CL laptop with a linux system
I built using LFS and BLFS from http://www.linuxfromscratch.org

If you really want to learn how a distribution is built, and know your
system from the inside to the STDOUT, read the LFS book. Then follow
the book (at least the section on GRUB if you want to continue using
UBUNTU).

If you don't have X, you definately want the framebuffer (and even if
you do have X, IMO). There are alot of things that can give you nice
graphics on it:

links One of its modes can use the fb for graphics; a browser
w3m Another browser, can use the fb for graphics
gtk There IS a fb target for gtk, but I've never built it.
I'm not sure it works 100%, or even at all, but it is
listed.
fonts Normal text just looks better, and you can have a very
readable display even when using small fonts.
fbxine Xine. On the fb. Watch a movie in full-screen. Does need
X, as it links to X shared libs, but doesn't need X

That being said, you don't absolutely have to have the fb if you don't

yes - perhaps I messed up the coordination with the kernel upgrade. I
ran both the kernel upgrade and the nvidia/livna driver install and
then restarted. Can't remember the precise problems I had but ... no
accelerated x-display I guess (ie just base Xorg nvidia drivers)...

Perhaps my problem was caused by the previous use of the nvidia
installer script - on my original install - which messed with the livna
packages.

(re combining livna rpms and nvidia scripts) 

If I just follow the instructions they work for me. The instructions
are looong but once you've got through them once...
 

I removed the relevant livna rpms and ran the nvidia installer scripts
again. From a console. I was sure I was in for more trouble but those
nvidia scripts worked it out. Thanks for the offer of helping with the
rpms though.

AFAIK you can use mkfs.vfat and doze will happily read it, it
just doesn't allow you to create vfat partitions larger then 32
or so GB. But should read larger created with Linux without
problems...

Well, you've got two problems. The one with lockups could be the kernel
version. The one with ndiswrapper could be that Linux limits the amount
of stack space the kernel uses, but Windows drivers assume they can get
as much as they want.

A better solution to ndiswrapper woes is to use hardware that's
supported by Linux. I swapped out the built-in Broadcom in my laptop
for a built-in Intel card.

Also, the development RPMs for FC5 *are* set up to be "yum"able, but you
have to configure yum to know about the repository. Or you can just FTP
the files and use rpm (which is what I do).

SUID script help!

Ouch. Ok, theres a lesson for me, always supply the full story.

Ok, the script/program is part of a larger project. This C
script/program isnt going to be actually used on any existing systems
so as I said earlier, security isnt a problem.
As part of this project, I cant use sudo because of the way the project
is being developed.

If you want the remaining duration to be in whole numbers then enter it in
whole numbers and let project calculate % complete.
To do this effectively insert the the "actual duration" column and the
"remaining duration" column. When you update, enter the new value for actual
duration and the amount remaining. Project will then calculate the percent
complete for you.

Alternatively you could write some VBA which would go through and round
remaining duration to the nearest integer after you have updated percent
complete.

I'm not sure I understand the need for integer values though. Why are they
necessary?

We agree that it should be after the status date and if you reschedule the
incomplete work to take place after the status date your early finish will
show as it should. What I'm trying to tell you is updating the project's
progress involves more than merely setting a percent complete. That's only
the first step in a 2 step procedure - and you're leaving out a crucial part
of the process. If I have a 2 day task that was scheduled for last week,
Mon and Tue, and mark it as 50% complete, it will show work took place on
Monday but has not taken place on Tuesday. But as of that moment, Project
doesn't know if it really didn't take place and needs to be moved up into
the future or if we just haven't gotten around to posting the data for last
Tuesday's work yet. If you now reschedule the remaining work, Project will
split the task and move the remaining portion forward, in the process also
changing the early finish date to the day after your status date as it
should. If you don't reschedule uncompleted work, Project doesn't know it's
supposed to recalculate those early finish dates. You have to do both
tasks - post actuals and reschedule remaining.

Just in case you meant "resource pool" in an HR way, and not in a MS Project
environment....

You would need to connect all of your project plans to a "resource pool" MS
Project plan. The way I have done this in the past is to create a project
plan solely for the use of this purpose (i.e., resource pool). All of the
resources that you have access to use are entered into the resource sheet for
this project plan. The only tasks that I have entered were for
vacation/sick/training days, but you don't need to actually add any tasks in
the plan at all.

All of the project plans that contain the "work" are then connected to the
resource pool by openning the "pool" and the "work" MS Project files (so that
they are both open at the same time) and in the "work" project file selecting
Tools | Resource Sharing | Share Resources..., then select the Use resources
(From:) radio button, and then select the resource pool project plan from the
drop-down. You will need to open and "link" (to) the resource "pool" project
plan from each of your "work" plans.

You can perform all of the "linkings" first. Then check the resource sheet
in the "pool" to see if all of your resources are present. If not, you can
add them via the Resource Sheet view.

If you have accomplished this feat, then the fun with "Leveling" starts, but
thats another subject....

Reviewing Mikes TechTrax will give you a more solid understanding of
how MS Project "thinks" with respect to Work, Duration and Units. This
will help you in the future. For your particular problem at hand, try:

1. Create the task (assumption is a Fixed Unit task Type)
2. Establish the 10 day Duration
3. Assign the 16 hours Work
4. As a last step, assign the Resource
Becuase you established the Duration and Work first, then assigned the
Resource, MS Project spreads the 16 hours of Work across the 10 day

How to get the end date to change when updating a task?

It's hard to understand just what you're expecting to happen here. I have a
task that is originally 10 days duration. We've worked on it 4 days. I
enter a remaining duration of 15 days. 4 days worked plus 15 to go means we
originally underestimated the required time to do the work and it should
have been 19 days. Ergo, the duration changes. Now if you need to preserve
the original 10 days estimate for tracking purposes, that's what a baseline
is all about. When you make updates as above, the scheduled duration
changes but the original saved baseline doesn't, giving you a static
reference point in order to compare actual performance with original
estimates.

Whether the early finish would change or not or how it would change really
depends on the scenario. I have a 40 hours task starting Mon 8am. It's
early finish is Friday 5pm. I show it starts on time and is 20% done -
actual duration 1 day, remaining duration 4 days. Early finish stays the
same. But if it started Tuesday instead, early finish becomes the following
Mon. OR if it starts on time, 1 day actual duration but 3 days remaining,
that makes the task 25% done and the early finish moves up to Thurs. So
when you enter a start date, an actual duration, and/or a remaining duration
the early finish may or may not change depending on the specific mix of
parameters you've input. For instance, 1 day shorter duration combined with
a 1 day later than scheduled start would result in an early finsh that
hasn't changed.

The following identities always hold true...

ScheduledDuration == ActualDuration + RemainingDuration.
% Complete == ActualDuration/ScheduledDuration.
For unstarted tasks, EarlyFinish ==ScheduledStart + ScheduledDuration.
For in-progress tasks, EarlyFinish==ActualStart + ScheduledDuration

As an aside, I can't imagine what advantage you get using manual calculation
mostly. Project is fundamentally a schedule calculator. If you don't let it
calculate, what's the point in using it?

If it still "fails" on a totally new file I'm not sure what else to

Thank you for your helpful reply. This did resolve the question for me
although I did find another problem as well: I also had a space after the ">
" in ownerid, the effect being to add a space before the curly bracket. This
generated an item id error (which is why it did not work when I tried
removing the \ previously). Removing the space has it working nicely.

keep in mind that in general and no matter how fast your hardware, reporting
is always...well lets just say sluggish :-)

while you can use parameters to reduce the data set even these have
limitations. Currently there is a bug that means you can only add 50 items
to a parameter drop down. For instance you might want to have a drop to
which lists all your users, you would then choose a user and report on them.
The issue today is you could only put 50 items in the parameter list.

settings within CRM. It appears that with Contacts, it will import ALL
the contacts that the user has security rights to see. That section
under Tools/Options is labeled Contacts, where the other two ar titled
MY Appointments and MY Tasks. The workaround that I have come up with
to address is to temporarily modify the user/group security settings,
check and sync, and uncheck prior to resetting security. Will follow up
after implementation on the success of this. Seems like it would work,
but certainly a pain. Anyone have other ideas on this, or reasons why
the workaround might fail?
