Which type of ISO download to get? Posted: 26 Apr 2006 11:45 AM PDT Dave wrote: Did not mean to sound condescending. Apologies. Generally you want the source files as last hope back up OR you have special patches for them you want to compile into them. The is mostly for installations with a large number of users and specialized applications. You can usually get a 5-10% execution speed increase by compiling it on the machine it runs on so a program has to use up a lot of time you are paying for to make that worthwhile, say a database program with a lot of users so the time saved will add up even if only one second per search. I am sure there are other reasons. If you knew about those reasons you wouldn't be asking the question. I have been through five releases of RH/FC and used one source file once -- which didn't help. I don't bother downloading them at all rather rely upon what is on sourceforge and such for the latest and the occasional legacy version. Don't know SUSE but for FC I went to the KDE configuration panel to look around and when I clicked on wireless I was told it was not configured, which is good because I have no wireless devices. But it offered to configure it for me. [Routing tables look OK.] A couple of thoughts: - temporarily turn all firewalling off (if you are feeling paranoid, disconnect from the outside world first). - make sure neither machine is filtering PINGs - run "tcpdump -n" or ethereal at both ends and look for ARP traffic - borrow a hub, connect both machines and the firewall to the hub, and see if the problem goes away. [I know this sounds weird, but I've seen hardware SNAFUs where this made a difference.] - use a crossover cable instead of a hub. (Regular cable if one or both NICs can autosense) |
configuring sendmail to accept verification for other server Posted: 24 Apr 2006 07:44 PM PDT Bill Davidsen wrote: Odd. I: [root@webserve mail]# hostname -s hostname: Unknown host When I made the hostname changes I just restarted the service: network. Thought that'd be enough. Guess not. I reboot the machine, and now all the logs refer to itself as "webserve" instead of "fileserve". So, guess that's fine now. =) Thanks for the advice! But I still get "hostname: Unknown host" when I hostname -s. Well, on the local machine I made sure to add the following to the MC: define(`SMART_HOST',`smtp.domainname.com')dnl MASQUERADE_AS(`domainname.com')dnl and rebuilt sendmail.cf On the remote server I have in: /etc/mail/access Y.domainname.com RELAY local-IP-address RELAY and /etc/mail/relay-domains Y.domainname.com local-IP-address All that sounds like it should be enough... in fact! on the local server in /var/log/maillog I don't get the errors anymore, I get: Apr 27 15:41:51 webserve sendmail[2427]: k3RKfpWa002427: from=liam, size=53, class=0, nrcpts=1, msgid=<domainname.com>, relay=liam@localhost Apr 27 15:41:51 webserve sendmail[2428]: k3RKfpRB002428: from=<domainname.com>, size=383, class=0, nrcpts=1, msgid=<domainname.com>, proto=ESMTP, daemon=MTA, relay=localhost [127.0.0.1] Apr 27 15:41:51 webserve sendmail[2427]: k3RKfpWa002427: to=com, ctladdr=liam (500/500), delay=00:00:00, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=relay, pri=30053, relay=[127.0.0.1] [127.0.0.1], dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent (k3RKfpRB002428 Message accepted for delivery) Apr 27 15:41:52 webserve sendmail[2430]: k3RKfpRB002428: to=<com>, ctladdr=<domainname.com> (500/500), delay=00:00:01, xdelay=00:00:01, mailer=relay, pri=120383, relay=smtp.domainname.com [72.3.xx.xx], dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent (k3RKfjXk013713 Message accepted for delivery) Which seems OK, until I get the email back saying: The original message was received at Thu, 27 Apr 2006 15:41:46 -0500 from webserve [64.19.xx.xx] ----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors ----- <com> (reason: 550-Verification failed for <domainname.com>) ----- Transcript of session follows ----- .... while talking to celticbear.com.: <<< 550-Verification failed for <domainname.com> <<< 550-unrouteable mail domain "webserve.domainname.com" <<< 550 Sender verify failed 550 5.1.1 <com>... He also had a restore CD, which could be used as the method of last resort, to reset the system with the initial ghost image. He was able to use Slax to get his files for school before sending it back for repair under warranty. Posted: 24 Apr 2006 01:55 PM PDT I ended up putting /boot and swap on the 9GB (sda) and everything else is / on the 36GB. The rest of the 9 is free so I can move stuff around later if needed but this way I can learn how much space /var, /usr, etc will be taking up without running the risk of partitioning something too small. |
