Unable to open Word 97 files in Word 2000

Posted: 08 Mar 2014 12:39 PM PST

I use Word 2000 on my Vista

For some reason I can't open Word 97 comments from my wife in the other room to print out (she has tried using Word 97 as well as something closer to Word 2013)

Msft keeps saying in effect 'we can't open the file . What file format would you like to use ? etc---Adobe won't work.

This didn't use to happen--maybe a month ago I could open the word attachments she fwd to me to print

2 weeks ago I suddenly had trouble using google to print--so to print I now click on IE( and everything prints ok)

I'm wondering if my old Word 2000 version, which doesn't have a pdf capability, might be the problem but then it worked before but not now

When I went into Stapes, I was told that I couldn't buy a new Word  number to insert  on the Microsoft site beacuse I was still using Vista nd the new ones required 7 or no luck there.

Anybody got any ideas as to what I try now?

Spanish(?) Smart Quotes

Posted: 08 Mar 2014 10:08 AM PST

I was typing along when suddenly the quotation marks that I typed looked like this: „Thankyou" It appears that my smart quotes are suddenly in a Spanish format.

I'm thinking I hit a key combination that caused this, but I can't find any hot keys in Word help that seem to have this function. Has anyone else experience something similar or know how to undo whatever it is that I did?

Separate tables on adjacent pages merges

Posted: 08 Mar 2014 08:48 AM PST

Hello:

When I create a table on a page in a document, and then another table on the next page, and I then move the second-page table to the top of that page, it merges with the first-page table. Is there any way to avoid this merger?

I know I can leave the second-page table one line below the top of the page, but sometimes I need all the space I can get, and, more often, the second-page table moves up (and merges) because of something I did in the document.

Thanks for a tip or two.

Office 365 Spell checker stopped working part way through a document

Posted: 08 Mar 2014 06:30 AM PST

I was writing a paper for school and noticed the automatic spell checking stopped working on page 4/6

Looked in the settings and it was on. Even open the document on different PCs and it was the same. Even on a PC using Word 2010.

Uninstalled and re installed the Office 365 but still the problem persists.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Saving as PDF changes paperformat

Posted: 08 Mar 2014 06:13 AM PST

-Fixed-

Hi, I have made a report in Word, but I have to send it to a company that can print and bind it for me. As they only accept PDF files, I save the Word document as a PDF but when I do, if doesn't keep the A4 paperformat, but changes it in the Letter format. How can I keep the A4 format when saving as a PDF?

Multiple Word problems

Posted: 08 Mar 2014 05:31 AM PST

I am using MS Office Word 2007 on Windows 7 (64 bit). I was continually being confronted by the message "You have exceeded the maximum number of pages in Word) and Windows would close the document and offer me a recovery version. And off we'd go again with these incessant interruptions.

I sought solutions, most of which seemed complex and had been found not to solve the issue.

However, I was advised to save documents as docx. Since then I have received the message "There was a problem sending the command to the program" and all I get is a blank Word window. I cannot access this or any other document - and it is my livelihood.

Meanwhile Adobe PDF Maker has taken upon itself to convert every single document in my system into a PDF - and then says it cannot open them because there are corrupt.

The original files I have been working on are there - but not available to me. All help appreciate (and the simpler the better). Cheeers

When I label a title as heading 4 It doesn't reflect on my table of content

Posted: 07 Mar 2014 06:04 PM PST

I wrote my document like

1. heading 1

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

1.1 heading 2

bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb

1.1.1 heading3

ccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc

1.1.1.1 heading4

ddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd

But when I added my table of content (heading format) I got

1. heading1

   1.1 heading2

      1.1.1 heading3

But it doesn't show the titles that were labeled as heading4?!!!

Any Ideas about what is going on?

Can't access online help in Office 2010 Professional Plus

Posted: 07 Mar 2014 05:15 PM PST

While using both Word 2010 and Powerpoint 2010, I can no longer access the online Office help. The program treats it as though I am not connected the internet even though I am. When I first open help, its status bar says I am connected, but then quickly reverts to saying that I am offline. I tried restarting the pc, but it didn't correct the problem. Today was the first time this ever happened, and I can't find anything posted on any forums for this issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Seeking a bordered arrow with fixed width and arrow head size but variable length.

Posted: 07 Mar 2014 04:44 PM PST

I am looking for a way to make white arrows with a black outline/border and can easily be lengthened without re-proportioning the arrow head size or the thickness of the arrow body.

(1) When I navigate to Insert > Shapes > Lines > Arrow, I get a simple arrow that fits all of these characteristics, except does not have a black border/outline. I can easily make the length of the arrow longer by extending the end of it, and the thickness of the arrow and arrow head size does not change. However, it is a simple line and I can only set the Shape Outline color and not the Shape Fill color. Ideally, I'd like to be able to use this shape and set it to have a white shape fill and a black shape outline. I cannot find a way to do this.

Note: I added a black Glow in Shape Effects and this is close to my desired shape but not exactly what I want.

(2) When I navigate to Insert > Shapes > Block Arrows > Right Arrow, I get an arrow of which I can set height, width, and the size of the arrow head, as well as the colors of the arrow and the outline. However, when I try to lengthen the arrow by stretching out the end, the thickness and size of the arrow head changes. I have not been able to figure out how to lock the thickness (the height, in this case) so only the length (the width) can be changed.

Is there a solution to this?

Microsoft Equation 3.0 - caption and cross referencing do not work properly

Posted: 07 Mar 2014 04:19 PM PST

Hi

You see, everything else works perfect with the captions and cross referencing. You can caption tables and figures and then cross reference them within your text without being worried that if you added some tables of figures before them, all your cross references would be mixed up.

But with the equations, this is not the case. You can caption an equation using standard or built up captions. But as soon as you try to cross reference them, the whole equation is also inserted together with its caption in your text!

You actually cannot cross reference your equation, in an easy and consistent way, such that you won't spend more time as required for it and you won't lose track on it. I have already read some responses to this query and I know that because the equation is in the same paragraph with the caption, Word takes the whole thing as caption, and not only the number.  I have been working with MS Word 2007 and Microsoft Equation 3.0 for five years, writing my doctoral thesis which contains about a thousand equations. It is very difficult for me to keep references to the equations. It is also too late to switch to the new equation editor, as my thesis is already 80% written in Word 2007 using Microsoft Equation 3.0.

I highly appreciate if someone in Microsoft can help me with this problem and teach me on how to caption and then cross reference the equations.

Best regards

I currently am using a Dell ultrabook XPS 12 with windows 8.1 and office 2013 installed.  I use this computer between my home and work networks as I am a teacher.  Unfortunately, using it at work is frustrating as when I go to use Word, I get a little box that opens with the following:

                                                     Windows Security

                                     Connecting to proxy server docs.live.net

                                     Enter your credentials

                                     ******Box for pass*******************

                                     Remember my credentials

                                     Use another account

                                                                         ok          Cancel

I have tried to put in my password for my live account... I have tried putting in my username and pass for my work network... it doesn't seem to matter.  This window just keeps coming up and interfering with my work.  Please help.

O2007 b2 installs OK but programs won't start

Posted: 03 Jun 2006 09:19 PM PDT

hi Greg,

For Office 2007 beta 2 on Vista you'll need Vista build 5384 or higher. Previous Vista builds have branded the desktop as 'beta 2',
but they weren't. (confusing it is).

==========
I'm running a fresh install of Vista b2, build 5308. I have installed Office
Pro Plus 2007/b2 and the install completes OK. This is on a Compaq v2565us,
Sempron w/1GB and ATI xpress 200m.

I try to start any of the programs, it sits for a minute or two then says
"Microsoft Office Word 2007 must be closed" then gives me a dialog with a box
to close the program.

No error message, no nothin'.

I checked the application log, there are Office Diagnostics messages stating
that MSOd does not see any repeated problems.

Any ideas?

Thx

I would rather prefer if the default directory was the last directory

So... is there any setting somewhere to change this behaviour?

Installing Office 2007 Beta 2

Posted: 02 Jun 2006 12:47 AM PDT

When I did the 2007 install, I got a message that said something like "You
can only have one version of Outlook" at which time, it installed Outlook
2007. I do not use Outlook and had not fully activated outlook 2003, which
may be why I had no trouble. If you have a lot of mail and calendar activity
in Outlook 2003, the installer might not like it much.

It is not necessary to remove 2003 before installing 2007 (with the possible
exception of the outlook issue, which I suspect is an artifact of how you are
using Outlook 2003), however, it does make some system-wide changes.

When I did the install, 2007 re-did all my icons so that every 2003 office
file I opened launched 2007, which was....interesting. I have 2007 and 2003
on separate drives, and it is possible to re-install 2003 without cleaning
out 2007 in that environment. This returns the 2003 icons and you can run
both 2003 and 2007 alternately.

Why would I want to run both 2003 and 2007? Well, I teach computer
science, and want to tell my students about the future, however, for the
moment, I still have to teach 2003.

In general, the 2007 interface appears excellent and I have found no
problems (yet).

Agreed. If the hardware is old and won't take a modern distribution, RedHat
7.3 is still available at www.fedoralegacy.org, along with occasional
security updates.

Definitely save those files in another location, along with the old
XF86Config.bak backup file. (I believe that's its name, generated by
Xconfiguratior.) RedHat 6.x also had another tool if you needed to get more
into the details of things, called "xf86config", which may be available for
you, and the mouse could be set with "mouseconfig" if I remember the tools
correctly.

Those have since been replaced with much better, more integrated tools like
"system-config-display" and "system-config-mouse" that do much better jobs
of supporting all the different hardware.

I've been poking at FC 4.90, the test release. It's very bleeding edge and
not ready for testing except for masochists who are happy to pay for their
RedHat releases by writing the workarounds and sending them in.

Well, yes. But having four year old SCSI drives is often just a burden, when
you can replace them at 2 or 3 years with much larger, less expensive drives
running on a new server that draws less power and cooling. Such things
matter in both home use and industrial scale. And since the most common
cause of file loss is user error, not disk failure (in my experience),
having spare local disk for nightly mirrors is really useful.

For the same size drive, not much less. But for the same money in SATA, you
can get a *MUCH* larger drive.I can get a decent 300 Gig SATA for $250 off
the shelf. I can get a decent 300 Gig SCSI for about $800 off the shelf.

You can remove a license from a user by deleting the approriate row from
SystemUserLicenses. You first need to get the proper systeemuserid value from
the SystemUserBase table.

Doing this is not supported though. Make sure you have a good backup of your

CRM / Active Directory error

Hi Mark,
When you make a role change/perform a security operation thru' CRM, the
CRM infrastructure handles a lot of things including updating the AD Groups,
CRM Tables in SQL Server that represent security information, logic for
handling child Business Units etc.

If you update AD groups directly, it will bypass all this and can cause
inconsistencies in the data needed by CRM.

I hope this was useful.

Is there any 3rd party processes available for importing activities to
existing accounts?

Error while trying to close Activities

Posted: 01 Nov 2004 01:28 PM PST

Hi Daniel.

We have reinstalled the SFO client and no success. Note - if we access CRM
via the web client we are able to close the Activities, most of the time....
I'm sure it is something related to the SFO client but I wish I knew where
to look.

Thx for the tip.
