Installing or updating? Posted: 14 Jun 2005 02:46 PM PDT In the Usenet newsgroup comp.os.linux.setup, in article <googlegroups.com>, macruzq wrote: redhat-6.0 27 Apr 99 hedwig (glibc2.1 - 2.2.5-15) fc3 08 Nov 04 2.6.9 (2.6.10 -> 2.6.11 updates) glibc-2.3.3-74 fc4 14 Jun 05 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4 Can you say "HIGHLY UNLIKELY"? The libraries are incompatible, and the five year difference in the distributions means few if any of the old stuff is even close. Is the box potent enough? Is the partitions large enough? RH6.0 was happy enough with a 386, 32 Megs of RAM and 500 to 1750 Megs of disk, The release notes for Fedora 3 (and 4 on a 32 bit x86) say: * Minimum: Pentium-class Fedora Core 3 is optimized for Pentium 4 CPUs, but also supports earlier CPUs (such as Pentium, Pentium Pro, Pentium II, Pentium III, and including AMD and VIA variants). This approach has been taken because Pentium-class optimizations actually result in reduced performance for non-Pentium-class processors, and Pentium 4 scheduling is sufficiently different (while making up the bulk of today's processors) to warrant this change. * Recommended for text-mode: 200 MHz Pentium-class or better * Recommended for graphical: 400 MHz Pentium II or better Note The disk space requirements listed below represent the disk space taken up by Fedora Core 3 after the installation is complete. However, additional disk space is required during the installation to support the installation environment. This additional disk space corresponds to the size of /Fedora/base/stage2.img (on CD-ROM 1) plus the size of the files in /var/lib/rpm on the installed system. In practical terms, this means that as little as an additional 90MB can be required for a minimal installation, while as much as an additional 175MB can be required for an "everything" installation. * Custom Installation (Minimal): 620MB * Server: 1.1GB * Personal Desktop: 2.3GB * Workstation: 3.0GB * Custom Installation (Everything): 6.9GB Memory Requirements This section lists the memory required to install Fedora Core 3. * Minimum for text-mode: 64MB * Minimum for graphical: 192MB * Recommended for graphical: 256MB If you have a x86-64, FC4 wants roughly double the RAM, and 600 Megs more diskspace. Then Google search for "grub on CD" to learn how to make a grub-bootable cd-rom. The typical grub.conf entry should be as follows: title USB boot root(cd) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.X-Y root=/dev/sdaZ initrd /ramdisk-2.6.X.Y.img I made all that in practice and it works. |

So I think I'll blow it away and try the Mandrake 8.0. That package has about 6 CDs, and claims to be a power pack edition. I picked it up at some sort of fire sale a while ago. Once I figure out how to run things I will consider a modern release. In general I find Linux much poorer at navigation with the keyboard than Windoze, which is surprising, because I don't consider Windoze very good at that anyhow. -- "If you want to post a followup via groups.google.com, don't use the broken "Reply" link at the bottom of the article. Installing TightVNC ? Network Recognition Strangeness - Newbie Setup Posted: 07 Jun 2005 04:51 PM PDT "Giovanni" <net.it> wrote in message news:net.it... No, that's how to run Samba out of inetd. This has several major flaws. 1: Most modern Linux and other OS distributions now use xinetd, which keeps its services in individual config files in /etc/xinetd.d/. 2: You have to run xinetd or inetd to use this sort of feature. 3: It doesn't let you turn on or off Samba without having to futz with the inetd or xinetd service. 4: No major OS distribution that I know of these days does Samba this way anymore, they use init scripts instead. There are some minor advantages to it, such as automatically restarting in case Samba gets slapped down, but the overhead of running all these daemons on a major Samba server is way too high to justify it. |
no sound on fedora core 3 Posted: 07 Jun 2005 12:15 PM PDT com wrote: Usually kmix should save the settings on exit. Settings are stored in ~/.kde/share/config/kmixctrlrc. Probably an access right problem. In any case run alsamixer (assuming you're using ALSA) from a terminal and set the card from here.Additionally make sure KDE is configured for the sound system you are using (Control Center->Sound & Multimedia->Sound System) Arts takes control over the sound device to allow simultaneous sound events. When arts locks the device no other application can use it. To use arts with non-kde apps they either need to have build-in arts support or you need to - turn off arts before runnung them - set arts to a low auto-suspend time (also in Sound System) - use artsdsp I guess your mplayer was not build with arts support. dual boot on 2 hard drives with lilo Posted: 07 Jun 2005 10:31 AM PDT Larry Gagnon wrote: Yes, "image=/boot/vmlinuz" is pointing at hda5 boot partition. I assume that you installed Lilo to the MBR of hda from Vector Linux? Then in Vector Linux, create a /mnt/,<somename> directory and in fstab create an entry that will auto mount hdb2 to /mnt/<somename>. Then change your lilo.conf section got VL5 to read "image=/mnt/<somename>/boot/vmlinuz" The rest is OK. Good luck, jimbo |
locked files Posted: 07 Jun 2005 05:56 AM PDT ilaboo wrote: Does kppp have permission to write in /var/lock/ I have been running UNIX since about 1971, and Linux since 1998, and do not know what you mean by a file being locked. Files in /dev are mostly device files, and files have read, write, and execute permissions (man ls). Most files also have attributes (man lsattr and man chattr), but not, I believe, those in /dev If there is a file such as LCK..ttyS4 (the lock file for my modem) in /var/lock, you can remove it if you have permission. Normally, you should not do this, but close the connection and then the software will automatically release the lock for you. -- .~.
