What is wkwbl.dll and how can I find it?

Perhaps this helps:

That WKWBL.DLL file may be corrupt.

You can manually replace it with files from the installation CD
( or WorksBkup folder - C:\Program Files\WorksBkup\Works Shared

Copy the file wkwbll.dll from one of the above locations and save
it to

c:\program files\microsoft works

and also copy to

c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared

The file may have been corrupted by installation the Office beta.

I have been running UNIX since about 1971, and Linux since 1998, and do not
know what you mean by a file being locked. Files in /dev are mostly device
files, and files have read, write, and execute permissions (man ls). Most
files also have attributes (man lsattr and man chattr), but not, I believe,
those in /dev 
If there is a file such as LCK..ttyS4 (the lock file for my modem) in
/var/lock, you can remove it if you have permission. Normally, you should
not do this, but close the connection and then the software will
automatically release the lock for you.

You said this was a fresh install. If you uninstalled it and reinstalled it,

Yes, but my HP is very old.

It probably has nothing to do with your issue, but if you happen to be
running Norton AV, disable the office plug ins, and see if per chance that

In that 8.5 "update", besides the toolbar customizations being nixed,the
formatting dialogue is now more like the excell dialogue. The borders tab and
fonts tabs are almost identical to excell, except if you format as a number
with 2 digits it defaults to showing negative numbers as (40) instead of -40.
You have to uncheck that pesky box every time. Also the new version doesn't
reduce fractions just like excell. In excell it's bad enough to have to go to
each cell and change from 4th's to halves so it will show 1/2 instead of 4/8,
but in the new and improved works 8.5 the whole column is one or the other,
with no way to distinguish. I went back to 8.0, works fine, lasts long time!
The print preview also works more like excell, except you can't drag the
margins around like in excell. The only thing about the new print preview was
you couldn't zoom in like in 8.0.

Hi John,

In the case of Works Calendar going askew, the two prime suspects
I would suspect are MDAC and MSWksCal.wcd file damage/corruption.

Error message when you try to start the Works Calendar: "Works
cannot access one or more files it needs to run the Calendar."

It may help to delete the file CalMRU found in the folder, especially if
it is shown with size of 0 bytes :
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Works

Where all else has failed, a clean up can help.

These instructions were provided by Bharadwaj Subramaniam:

Step 1: Show hidden files, folders and extensions
=====
- Double click "My Computer" on the Desktop.
- On the Tools menu, click Folder Options...
- On the View tab, choose Show all files under Hidden Files, clear the
check in front of Hide extensions for known file types and then click OK
to close the window.

Result: Done

Step 2: Back up the original mswkscal.wcd file
=====
2.1 Search for the file:
- On the Windows Start menu, point to Search, and click "All files or
folders".
- In the "All or part of the file named" box, type "mswkscal.wcd"
(without the quotation marks).
- Click Find Now to search for the file.
The default location of the file is: <C>:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Works
2.2 Copy the found file to the Desktop for backup.

Result: Done

Step 3: Uninstall Works 8
=====
1. Uninstall Works 8.0 from the Start menu / Control Panel / Add or
Remove Programs
Note: If you have performed this step, please ignore this step and
continue with the next steps.

Result: Done

Step 4: Copy the Works Clean-up Utility and Windows Install Clean-up
Utility
=====
4.1 Insert the program installation disc for Works 8 (disc 1 of Works
Suite) into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT
key when you insert the disc to prevent the program from starting
automatically.
4.2 Browse to the "MSWorks\PSS" folder on the installation disc.
4.3 Open the "MSWorks\PSS" folder and copy the file "wks8xp.EXE" for
the Works 8.0 Clean Up Utility to the Desktop
(Right click on the file "wks8xp.EXE", and select "Copy". Return to the
Desktop, right click on the Desktop and select Paste)
4.4 Take out the installation disc from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive

Result: Done

Step 5: Run the Windows CleanUp Utility
=====
5.1. Download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, msicuu2.exe, Frm:

5.2. Save the file to the desktop.
5.3. Double click the downloaded file to install the Windows Installer
CleanUp Utility.
5.4. Go to Start-> All Programs and click on "Windows Install Clean
Up".
(If it is not listed then the msicuu2.exe program was probably not
installed properly. Try double-clicking on msicuu2.exe to run the
install again.)
You may find more than one Works item, please remove them all.

Result: Done

Step 6: Run the Works Clean-up Utility

Double click the "wks8xp.EXE" file on the Desktop to run it.

Result: Done

Step 7: Remove all the entries Manually
=====
- Delete folder all the folder related to works in C:\Program File\Microsoft
Woks
- Delete folder all the folder related to works in C:\Program File\Microsoft
Woks
Suite 2005
- Delete folder all the folder related to works in D:\Documents and
Settings\All
Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Works
- Delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Works
- Delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Works Suite
- Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Works
- Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Works Suite

Result: Done

Step 8: Clean Boot your computer and reinstall Works 8.0
=====
8.1 Clean Boot Windows XP:
- Click the Start menu and choose Run.
- Enter msconfig into the open box and click OK.
- On the Startup page, click Disable All.
- On the Services page, mark the checkbox before "Hide All Microsoft
Services" and then click Disable All.
- Click Apply and click OK.
- Restart the computer.
8.2 Reinstall Works 8.0.
8.3 Return to Normal Mode:
- Click the Start menu and choose Run.
- Enter msconfig into the open box and click OK.
- Under the General tab, choose Normal Startup and click OK to reboot
the computer.
