When installing RHEL 3, part way through, all you need to do is check the
box that says to install the compilation and development packages. It does
not take a superior human being like Peter; even I have done it, many times,
back since Red Hat Linux 5.0 days (1998?).

Can you say "HIGHLY UNLIKELY"? The libraries are incompatible, and the
five year difference in the distributions means few if any of the old
stuff is even close.

Is the box potent enough? Is the partitions large enough? RH6.0 was

If you have a x86-64, FC4 wants roughly double the RAM, and 600 Megs more
diskspace. Isn't software bloat wonderful?

The Fedora box, i would not have a clue how to disable it on the router is a
westell router if thats important. The fedora box has a 3com 9XXB card can
remmeber all the numbers of my head, the other cards on the windows boxs are
a broadcom gigabit and USB ethernet adapter

why /dev/shm is not used

I installed gkrellm2 which shows me my cpu usage - it jumps to 100%
each time I click a link in Firefox.....

Arts takes control over the sound device to allow simultaneous

I guess your mplayer was not build with arts support.

I have been running UNIX since about 1971, and Linux since 1998, and do not
know what you mean by a file being locked. Files in /dev are mostly device
files, and files have read, write, and execute permissions (man ls). Most
files also have attributes (man lsattr and man chattr), but not, I believe,
those in /dev 
If there is a file such as LCK..ttyS4 (the lock file for my modem) in
/var/lock, you can remove it if you have permission. Normally, you should
not do this, but close the connection and then the software will
automatically release the lock for you.
