However, I would select the Recent Documents folder from the Open tab. Perhaps that would restore your Office applications to the expected behaviour. Perhaps also there is some kind of preferences file that needs to be reset to default behavior. Trashing the preferences is the first thing one should do when Photoshop goes berserk, for example. At this point tho I have assumed tho that something got corrupted in my image build and I rebuilt from scratch... Windows xp & O2K3 & all updates and then networking and other software components, checking all along the way, but thankfully the problem did not reappear.
