Visual Impaired Accessiblity

Posted: 08 Mar 2005 12:11 PM PST

Hi Anauna,

There is an Accessibility applet in the Windows Control
Panel in addition to the settings for the Windows Desktop.
Decreasing the 'screen resolution' from, for example 1024
to 600x800 will make things 'appear' larger.

In Word, the reviewing baloon text size is controlled
by a style 'Balloon text' in addition to using the
View=>Zoom feature.

Many dialog boxes are controlled by the settings for
the Windows desktop properties, as far as font size.

Hi, klc330/spchtch04,

One computer = one license. You can install it on the same computer as many
times as you like.

You can remove it from one and install it on a different one, and that's one
license.

If you have trouble with the internet activation process because of the
perceived hardware changes, then choose the telephone method of activation
during the activation wizard, and explain the situation to the operator.
They can help you get it activated.

As long as it's only installed on three computers, it doesn't matter which,
or how many times.

I think I've figured this out. When adding the MSI to AD, you also add
the .mst in the Modifications tab.

I wonder how that affects upgrades to the msi's, would the MST propagate
through, or would the new msi override (and you'd have to add the MST to
the upgrade MSI definition as well).

Anyway, Susan - thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Hi J.T.,

Probably good in this case to continue to work
through the MS Product support case assignment.

Trying to mix and match Office elements,
('per user' installs aren't recommended unless GPO is being used) as
these generally end up with some sort of upgrade problem when the upgrade
installation is 'per machine'.

Rinstalling Access 2000 in a 'per machine' scenario
afterwards is likely going to be the one to go with
although that 'out of sequence' install may require
a repair reinstall/recache of Office 2003.

We have Access 2000 installed on a per user basis on
several hundred PCs, along with Office 2000 Standard
(which is installed on a per computer basis).

The problem: When we upgrade to Office 2003 Standard
(using group policy, on a per computer basis), it
uninstalls Access 2000.

We've had Microsoft working on this problem for a couple
of weeks, to no avail. They say the problem is based in
the "reference count" for shared DLLs related to Access
2000. Apparently Office 2003 does some clean up based on
these reference counts (e.g. if count = 0, delete the
file).

The question: Does anyone have a solution? We'd really
like our Office 2003 Standard upgrade to skip this clean
up. MS says the OPC files can't be configured to skip
this.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Oh yes, we aren't using
SMS or Zenworks.

Updated from 2002 to 2003 but now I have both!

Posted: 03 Mar 2005 12:35 AM PST

Hi, Chris,

What I mean is that it appears (without actually being able to look at your
system) that you have two versions of Office installed, because the Office
2003 upgrade didn't quite remove all of Office XP. If there is still Office
XP in your Add/Remove Programs, uninstall it from there.

Have you tried re-installing Office 2003 to see if it can repair itself?
That might be a good idea, also.

Deleting the Office10 folder isn't usually the best idea, since there's more
to an installation than just the files in Office10. There are registry
entries that are made and other files added to the windows directory. The
Add/Remove Programs uninstall is the best place to ensure that the most of
the application is removed.

I hope that makes more sense--and yes--uninstalling and re-installing are
good things to try, in general. Sometimes Office is able to fix itself.

Why can't I install Office 2000 Premium on Windows XP?

Posted: 02 Mar 2005 12:11 PM PST

Sorry about not giving the complete error messages, well when I try to
install Office 2000, it gives me an error msg containing MSIEXEC.EXE 7355
error. Now I am running windows XP Home and viewing the event viewer I get
this:
A provider, OffProv, has been registered in the WMI namespace, Root\MSAPPS,
but did not specify the HostingModel property. This provider will be run
using the LocalSystem account. This account is privileged and the provider
may cause a security violation if it does not correctly impersonate user
requests. Ensure that provider has been reviewed for security behavior and
update the HostingModel property of the provider registration to an account
with the least privileges possible for the required functionality.
I have narrowed it down to the fact that it's trying to install under a non
administrative account, with windows xp home, the steps to follow to bring up
the security tab are not there. Is there such a way to bring up the security
tab to change the priviledges on the c:\windows\installer directory? Thank
you very much for your time in helping with this matter.

Column Headings in the Index

Posted: 05 Sep 2013 12:27 PM PDT

I have gone through the laborious process of creating an index with the surname Main Entry, followed by the Sub-entry given name and page numbers. It looks really good however if the given names of a specific surname exceed the column length, the surname doesn't repeat on the next column or page. How do I correct this.

This screen shot isn't very good but if you look closely you will notice "King" at the end of page 192 but the first names belonging to surname "King" are at the beginning of the next page. Also the Kings continue on the second column but "King" does not proceed the column.

NewCenturySchlbk font vs. New Century Schoolbook font

Posted: 05 Sep 2013 11:24 AM PDT

I typically use New Century Schoolbook as my font.  Word 2010 seems to have an embedded font that is similar, but not as readable, called NewCenturySchlbk.  It often spontaneously substitutes the latter for the former.  The really bizarre thing is that the NewCenturySchlbk does not even show up in the Windows/Fonts folder, and a search of the entire computer doesn't turn up anything.  Does anyone (Susan Barnhill leaps to mind since as far as I can tell she knows everything there is to know about Office) know where to find it and how I can get rid of that font permanently?

Things I have tried:
1.  Using font substitution to replace NewCenturySchlbk with New Century Schoolbook.
2.  Hacking the registry to change references from one to the other.
3.  Prayer
4.  Using foul language
5.  Blaming my colleagues

Many thanks.

Merge Word Documents, but keep Save Date

Posted: 05 Sep 2013 10:30 AM PDT

Hi again!!

Just wondering if there was any easy way to merge documents, BUT there is something important it must do.

I use my laptop for school work, and therefore I would like it so that when I print off my work, it prints off continuously on paper, therefore cutting the amount of paper that is used. However, on my template that I use, it has an automatic date feature that updates when I save the file, therefore showing the day I made the document. Is there any other way I could merge the word documents, but keep the individual dates?

Thanks

Bug when closing Office window?

Posted: 05 Sep 2013 07:48 AM PDT

I have 400 documents that I shall open, check and then close again. I open them one at a time in explorer, check what I should check then close them. With programs that works the window will close and I'll be back in the explorer. But with Word and other Office programs I won't come back to the Explorer. Apparently there is a bug that makes Windows consider all Word windows as one, so instead of just closing the window it also tabs me over to a completely unrelated Word window which happens to be open.
So in short, the bug causes Word to also switch over to another open Word window instead of just closing the one I was using.
Is there a way to get around this bug? It's really annoying when Microsoft tells me that I want to switch to another window 400 times in a work day when I don't want to switch windows at all.

This message can appear if:

If the macro security settings are not allowing the macro to run, you should confirm the origin of the macro to be sure that it can be trusted (contact the developer or the source for the macro). You can then temporarily enable all macros by using the following procedure.

NOTE: Be sure to change this option back to its original setting after you have run the macro.

If the macro is not accessible because the template is not loaded, click the File tab, click Options, and then click Add-Ins. At the bottom of the Add-Ins pane, select Templates from the Manage drop down list, and then click Go. In the Templates and Add-ins dialog box, click either Attach or Add. If the macro is not in the template, you may need to copy the macro from one template to another. table styles: default language

Posted: 05 Sep 2013 04:40 AM PDT

Hi,

So, I am having a problem with Word 2010.  Whenever I insert a table (from the insert tab) the default language for the table is set to English (U.S.) [Reveal Formatting] ~ however; my default language is English (U.K.) - and this is correctly set everywhere.  also, English (U.S.) is not even an additional language in any of the Word Options; Keyboard Options; Computer options anywhere on my machine.

The issue I am having is that when I try and modify the table style ~ there is no option to change or set the Language.  So; my assumption is that it is pulling the Language from "Table Normal" ~ which is not editable.

Sure,  I can select the whole document and set the proofing language to English (U.K.) However for tables; this is applied as "Direct Formatting" - it doesn't change the default language.

So, to this end; if anyone can tell me how I can change the default language for tables to be English (U.K.)  I would be grateful.

Many thanks,

Julian

Office 2003 deployment issues

Posted: 22 Feb 2005 12:24 PM PST

We don't require an uninstall in order to do the initial install. Where the
uninstall comes into play is when our support department needs to have
someone uninstall and then re-install. They frequently do this in order to
solve problems. One of our requirements for corporate deployment is the
install should not give them a UI. During this re-install right now the
only way I've found to re-install is through the full UI. Below is the
command we use for the initial install and also the re-install. I've tried
adding REINSTALL=ALL and the REINSTALLMODE properties with no success.

\\fs-ent\tstdapps\Office2003\StdSP1\setupstd.exe
TRANSFORMS=\\fs-ent\tstdapps\Office2003\StdSP1\ApsOffStd.MST /qb+ /L*V

Slipstream Office Service Packs

Posted: 21 Feb 2005 03:29 PM PST

It depends on which version of office you are updating. If OfficeXP then
you can't reburn it to CD unless someone knows how to fix the problem I'm
having. See my post "MSI admin update for OfficXP_pro SP3 results 860mb
directory"

I think you just mentioned what the problem is, you are trying to slipstream
a service pack to a cached CD copy and not an administrative install point.
I think the best you can do with a cached CD copy is chain the install of
the service pack.

Office 2003 icons

Go to control panel -- display -- settings -- advanced -- and check if dpi
settings is set to 96 dpi or not. As Office 2003 supports only upto 96 DPI

installation key dozens of times and never once has it been accepted as
valid.

Microsoft Office 2000 Professional Setup for Disk 2

No, I haven't tried copying the disc to my hard drive...wouldn't the

Speech trouble

Hi Mum,

The Office (Word) speech recognition feature supports
U.S. English rather than UK or AUS.

You shouldn't need to reinstall Word from MS Works Suite
but you may want to check your settings for the
Speech/Text input area to set that part up for
U.S. English.

I installed Microsoft 2004 Works suite using Australian language as the
preference. I then tried to setup the Speech Utility and it worked during
the initial setup with the training appearing to work but as soon as I went
into Word to use Speech it did not respond at all. Is this because I need to
uninstall and re-install the Microsoft 2004 Works Suite in US English
language rather than Australian?

How do I install my Office 2000 on my Windows XP?

Posted: 18 Feb 2005 08:01 AM PST

OK, My ME OS was on my old computer along with my MS Office 2000. When I got
my new computer I installed the XP upgrade using the ME Disk and Product Key
Code from it to install the upgrade. Someone mentioned something about OEM
of my old system and this wont install on my new one. So, they told me to
get into the Office Newsgroup for the answer. Does this give you anymore
info to try and help me solve this?

Object library not registerd

Posted: 17 Feb 2005 06:08 PM PST

Eureka, I found the problem!

Permit to pause whilst I let off some steam.

Hsssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss!

Ah, that felt good.

After spending severals hours today uninstalling, re-installing, using
eraser97 and manually removing things, I was finally able to re-install
Office and not have the error occur.

However, my glee was short lived!

When I restored my global templates to the Startup directory, the error
re-appeared!

I then added the templates to the Startup directory 1 at a time and found
the problem.

On 4 Oct 2004, I had modified one of the global templates and somehow the
reference to the VBA extensibility library 5.3 was "MISSING". Due to changes
I made back in Oct, I'm not even sure thgat the reference is any longer
necessary, which is likely why I neverr noticed a problem.

So, it would appear that I had not used Tools | References in Word 97 since
at least 4 October 2004.

All I had to do was correct the reference in a copy of the gloabal template
that was not in the Startup directory, then replace the critter in the
Startup directory.

I used Retrospect to restore the C drive to yesterday's files, then replaced
the template.

Solution was simple.
Path to finding it very difficult.

MSFT error message not very useful.

Why did it not just tell me that there was a specific midssing reference?

Taskbar question . . .

Posted: 17 Feb 2005 04:26 PM PST

Thank you, but this is for arranging worksheets. I want the taskbar button
in the taskbar to be stacked with all of my open worksheet on it, instead I
have either one taskbar button without the open worksheets, or each
worksheet has a different button.
Thanks

Deploying Office 2000 AND 2003 via GPO

Posted: 16 Feb 2005 03:02 PM PST

Thanks Neo. Looks like I'll have to find another solution; this excerpt
from your linked article sums it up:

"Using Group Policy software installation
"Group Policy software installation works directly with the MSI file and
bypasses Office 2003 Setup and the Setup.ini file when assigning or
publishing packages. For this reason, you cannot use Setup.exe to chain
Office 2003 installations when you assign or publish packages. Instead,
Microsoft Windows deploys Office 2003, the Office 2003 Multilingual User
Interface Pack, and other Office-related packages separately and in random
order. Because Office 2003 must be installed first, before a MUI Pack
installation can succeed, you cannot use chaining with Group Policy software
installation to combine these installations."

Thanks for the good resource.
