Using consistent mount points for USB & Firewire ieee1394 drives

Posted: 28 Aug 2004 08:31 AM PDT

begin com (hish) dedi ki:

You can mount your USB volumes based on volume-label instead of device
name. E.g:

As root issue:
# e2label /dev/sdc1 USBPART1

and then in /etc/fstab:
LABEL=USBPART1 /mnt/myusb1 ext3 defaults 1 2

so the first partition on the USB drive will always mount as /mnt/myusb1
regardless of which device it is on.

Alternatively you can get your USB device recognized consistently, as
explained in other posts.

You could use lilo.
Something has to load the operating system. The bios is too stupid and has
noidea where the operating systems are loaded on the disk. This is done by
a bootloader. Aso Something has to uncompress the linux kenrel, and jump to
the beginning of the kernel code . These things ae done by lilo or grub.
Linux can boot all sorts of operating systems. Including Windows.
HOwever if you would rather use the Windows bootloader to load the OS
youcan but then lilo or grub has to be installed in the partition that
contains /boot.

Find out which partition is "E" on, either with graphical admin utilities
provided with your distro, or from the command line (as root):
# cfdisk /dev/hda (touch nothing, and exit via "Q")

Assuming that,
hda1 -> C
hda2 -> E
hda5 -> Linux

either add that partition as a mount point via graphical admin
utilities provided with your distro, or edit /etc/fstab (as root) and add
the line below:
/dev/hda2 /mnt/e auto defaults 0 0

It is a good practice to save your original fstab via
cp -a /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.orj

and create the mount point via:
mkdir /mnt/e

P.S: It is a good practice to save your original fstab via
# cp -a /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.orj

P.P.S: I suggest you change E from NTFS to FAT32, so that E will be
accessed r/w by Linux (as opposed to r/o).

P.P.P.S: It is also a good practice to split Linux installation to 2
partitions, one for /home (as much as you can allocate) and the other for
the rest (4-6G). It is analogous to splitting a Windows installation to C
and D. When you reinstall Linux, only the system will be written over.
Your /home partition would be intact (depending on your choice while
installing), so you would be able to carry your personal data from one
install to another.

MSCRM Outlook Client + c360/ISV

Posted: 02 Apr 2004 02:11 AM PST

Mary,

All our tools (and all ISV solutions for that matter) work in the Outlook
client in ONLINE mode only. When users go offline, Microsoft CRM does not
hide the links which may lead users to believe that they can use these tools
but it fails when they click on the links because CRM is attempting to
connect to your web server.

To enable SearchPac in the Oulook client: take a look at section 7 on pages
8 and 9 of the installation guide. Also, the SearchPac ZIP file contains a
sample configuration file that you can simply save in the _resources folder
on your CRM server to enable this.

Dates in Workflow

Posted: 01 Apr 2004 04:21 PM PST

Hi Cindy,

Actually It's one problem from Ms.CRM that it can't handle date in workflow
if you use it as is. FYI, Your problem is almost the same with me but now, I
already can handle it. I want to send email to each contact who got birthday
today.
First, you have to add boolean field in contact
Second, create Workflow that use that field. If that field True create your
action (Use Manual Event), don't forget to update that field into false
after it
Third, create console app. that can execute that workflow by using CRM SDK
1.2
Forth, create a job in SQL, give True value in that field if today is their
birthday and run your console app.
And then schedule it to run everyday.

If the other reader have another solution, please tell me it.

Lots of potential, but maybe it is like Access 1.0.

Macro range.word.count high

Posted: 12 Jun 2013 09:26 PM PDT

I am trying to write a macro to Return the Word count for each questions. I can make a selection but range.words.count returns a higher number than the Status bar word count (7 c.f. 5 or 256 Cf.  219) The specific Code I am using is

    'Go to Top of Documnet
    Selection.HomeKey Unit:=wdStory
    ' Skip Cover Sheet
    Application.Browser.Target = wdBrowsePage
    Application.Browser.Next
    'Store Current position
    StartLocation = Selection.Range.Start
    'Move To Next Heading
    Application.Browser.Target = wdBrowseHeading
    Application.Browser.Next
    EndLocation = Selection.Range.Start
   ' Select fromstart to end
    ActiveDocument.Range(Start:=StartLocation, End:=EndLocation).Select
' Get and Return the word count
    wc = Selection.Range.Words.Count
MsgBox ("Words for this section are " & wc)

I can't see I have done something wrong inthe code; I can only see that the microsoft Selection object has the wrong value. Adding a watch to the selection also shows the High Value. Yet in the document at the same time the actual word count is the lower number ( and correct)

To test : On the second page of the document place three paragraphs, Tow of style Heading 1 and the Middle paragraph a known number of words.

Page numbering is a chapter number behind

Posted: 11 Jun 2013 01:24 PM PDT

I broke my document into sections and set page numbering in each section to include the chapter number. The pages in Section 1 are numbered correctly--I-1, I-2, I-3, etc. But when Section 2 begins, the chapter heading contains 2, but the page numbers are once again I-1, I-2, I-3, etc. When we get to Section 3 (whose heading contains the correct number 3), the page numbers are II-1, II-2, II-3; Section 4 is III-1, III-2, etc., and the remaining chapters include the previous chapter number in their pages as well. I'm using the same Heading 1 style for the beginning of each section. The Page Number Format settings for each section are Include chapter number, start with style Heading 1, Use hyphen separator, and Page numbering Start at 0. Section breaks are all continuous. What might I be doing wrong?

entries for wkss.exe in the Task Manager. Is this normal?

Sometimes. I get yet another message to the effect that the file doesn't

closing every occurrence of wkss.exe.

The KB article does quote the error message that I am getting,
viz.
Works cannot complete the task. Try restarting Windows, or reinstalling
Works.

I am running Windows XP Home SP2 and Works Suite 2002 and am logged in as an
Administrator (the only other account than Administrator).

The errors are annoying, but not fatal. Only occassionally have I found that
my edits on a spreadsheet were not saved.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

P.S. Sorry for the delay in replying but since I received an EMail re your

| Why do you copy and paste the entire KB article when just a link
| would do very nicely indeed. Are you trying to prove anything here?
| This is not a call centre you know. There is no need for the
| transcript of your call centre standard message which you are
| required to read out slavishly to Microsoft customers.
|
| Just give us the link to the kb article like this:
|
| http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;285909
|
| Now show us that you can understand and follow these instructions
| slavishly!
|
| Thank you.

RESOLUTION:
================
OFF2000: You Cannot Update Office to SP2 Without Installing the Outlook
Security Update
View products that this article applies to.
This article was previously published under Q299798
SUMMARY
When you apply the administrative version of the Microsoft Office 2000
Service Pack 2 (SP2) update to an administrative installation of Office
2000, the Outlook Security Update is automatically applied. There is no way
to apply SP2 without the Outlook Security Update.
MORE INFORMATION
The administrative update files for SP2 are Windows Installer patches (.msp
files) that you apply to your administrative share by using a command line
with specific parameters. The Out2kmst.msp, Pptmst.msp, and Excelmst.msp
files update the registry, and the Sp2admin.msp file updates the files on
the computer.

You cannot omit the installation of the Out2kmst.msp file (even if you do
not want the Microsoft Outlook E-mail Security Update) because the
necessary registry updates are contained in the file. Updated versions of
all .msp files must be applied to the computer for the upgrade to succeed.
If you do not apply all .msp files, you place the Office 2000 SP2
Administrative image in an unsupported state.

For additional information about deploying Office 2000 SP2, browse to the
following Microsoft Web site and refer to the Microsoft Office Resource
Kit:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2000/journ/OffSP2.htm

Any addins installed on one and not the other are either broken or will
result in errors. It's better to recreate the accounts or use a 3rd party
tool.

All your response did was enable a dysfunctional game for two to play.

Your response was humorous? Well, it went over like a lead balloon,
like deciding to pat an angrily barking dog on the head has a reasonable
chance of pacifying the dog rather than getting your hand bitten.

Your response baited him as could well be expected and now you
want to pretend to be the victim. And I am quite surprised that the
corporate Microsoft entity which is composed of human beings making
judgments failed to produce guidelines about ignoring John.Doe posts
instead of fueling the fire with your supposedly "humorous" gibe.

This is not the first time I've seen you choose to defend the faith against
troll attacks. It is considered codependent to engage in such behavior.
Your response was either a lie or you are far out of touch with reality.

It annoyed me to see you claim your subtle retaliation was justified
and "above" his tactics. You poked him to see him squeal. Since when
does a corporate entity not follow instructions made by human
authority which have moral/living consequences for an entire culture?

You attempted to represent MS as an "inanimate object" which is
not responsible for its decisions, and that John.Doe was directing
his animosity towards such an inanimate object, when in fact he wrote:
"I do not beieve in enriching rich jerks!" which is a personal perspective.

I might condemn the Alcohol Industry for promoting alcohol to teenagers
which led to Mothers Against Drunk Driving just because I may not know
the names of the individuals involved who decided to target their
advertising.
I may also want to condemn the Tobacco Industry for tempting people to
smoke when the directors knew that it would cause cancer. Because
corporations enclose those industries does not make the corporation
innocent because it does not have a personal identity since its polices are
determined by humans who have faces and names.

So there is nothing wrong with using a corporation name as a shortcut to
meaning the people who are responsible, though I may not know their names.
Your post twisted this legitimate choice.

John.Doe certainly appears to be a woman hater. I see nothing wrong with
your rejecting such a view. But his view and your response to it don't
belong on this forum. As an MVP, you are not above setting a standard
on this forum, but I believe should demonstrate a policy of non-response
to trolls. You do the same thing on other occasions. The degree that my
post is off-topic and cluttering up this newsgroup has been encouraged
by your example. I think as a representative of Microsoft you should act
with professionalism and keep your personal issues out of your responses.

Incidentally, I am not an MS basher. I think computer progress would
be at least eight years lagging in its appearance to the home user if
Microsoft hadn't propelled computer usability and hardware advancement.

I don't want to read your crap any more than John.Doe's crap,
and if you think my post is crap, it was toppled by your dominoe.

Store personal settings and personal templates in one location fo.

Posted: 29 Aug 2004 03:45 PM PDT

That is true for Word and some of the other applications but Outlook
Signature files and PowerPoint templates you need to hunt for. I would like
to see all items with the ablity to store in one central directory for easy
migration to a new system without all the hunting. It would make recovery and
migration simpler.

Installer Configuration Errors

Posted: 29 Aug 2004 07:48 AM PDT

Chris, Garfield, and all who find the same behaviour:

Methods 1&2 (registry changes etc) did not work as
discussed in:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=265194 "OFF2000:
Windows Installer Appears Every Time a Program Is Started".

The only method I have found that will work is:

Method 3a Modified (Kenn:

I discovered this when Access was fixed using the third
method, but Winword and Excel still displyed
the "Installer applet" every time they were started.

NOTE: If the original installation was from a network
drive, you MUST disable the network interface or Office
2000 repeats the same mistake again and again!

Instead I:

Reinstalled Microsoft Access, AND Word AND Excel
(one at a time with reboot between each correction to make
sure registry was updated)
(and/or any other misbehaving office 2000 program)

To resolve this problem, rename the Msaccess.exe and
System.mdw files, and then reinstall Microsoft Access. To
do this, follow the steps for your computer's operating
system.

NOTE: By default, the Msaccess.exe file is installed in
the "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10" folder,
and the System.mdw file is installed in the "C:\Program
Files\Common Files\SYSTEM" folder.

<<<< THIS WORKS

Method 3b: Reinstall Microsoft WinWord

To resolve this problem, rename the Winword.exe file to
OLD_Winword.exe, and then click on the Winword icon in the
START > PROGRAMS folder, this will kick off the install
procedure, you will be prompted to insert your original CD
and then it will correct the problem with Winword. To do
this, follow the steps for your computer's operating
system.

Method 3c: Reinstall Microsoft Excel

To resolve this problem, rename the Excel.exe file to
OLD_Excel.exe, and then click on the Excel icon in the
START > PROGRAMS folder, this will kick off the install
procedure, you will be prompted to insert your original CD
and then it will correct the problem with Excel.

================================================== ==
To do this, follow the steps for your computer's operating
system.

Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0:
Quit all instances of Word, including Microsoft Outlook if
Word is selected as your e-mail editor.
Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or
Folders.
In the Named box, type Msaccess.exe.
In the Look in box, select your local hard disk. (If you
are running Word from a network server, select an
alternate user template location.)
Click Find Now to search for the file.
For each occurrence of the Msaccess.exe file that appears
in the Find program, right-click the file. Click Rename on
the shortcut menu. Name the file a new name, such as
OldMsaccess.exe or Msaccess.exe-1.dot, and then press
ENTER.
Repeat steps 3 through 6 to rename the System.mdw file.
On the File menu, click Close to close the Find dialog
box.
Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Microsoft
Access. If you are prompted for the application CD-ROM,
insert the CD-ROM, and then click OK to continue the
application Setup.
After Setup finishes, start Microsoft Access.
On the File menu in Microsoft Access, click Exit to quit
Microsoft Access, and then start Microsoft Access again.
